Whats your take on this...? Lately this PS3 error thing has gotten some news...

http://kotaku.com/378576/sony-dont-know-what-error-code-80010514-is-either

Personally I never heard of this until a few weeks ago... It just seems like a response to RROD...

heres the link explaining it on kotaku

Also, on an older cagcast cheapyd mentioned that he liked listening to mashups... Well, every day on my drive home from college I listed to a mash up show on indie 103.1 in California.
Its on at Fri 5:30 pm here, 9:30 am Tokyo, but you can download all the shows from their site.
http://thesmashmix.com/
or listen to it live if you want in the morning from the indie 103.1 site

Hey Wombat and Cheapy:

What do you guys think of the game "Heavy Rain" that was showcased at E3 2006 as "The Casting" demo? The developers have been talking about their intention to use complete facial and body motion capture, as well as top actors, to give the game a very "interactive film" feeling. Do you think people will go for this? Does it sound interesting to you? And how important do you guys think story is to a video game?

On a completely unrelated note, if you could have a sequel to any game, what would it be, and why?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat

I'm assuming you guys love to play Rock Band and play it on a regular basis, so I have this questions:

1) Out of all instruments which one is your favorite and on which difficulty you play each.
2) Which non-DLC song(s) is your favorite.
3) Cheapy D vs. Wombat. Who is better?

BTW Congratz Wombat for the baby girl.

Cheapy,

I've been playing the simexchange, since you've talked about it on the show. It's great fun (surprisingly), but why the hell is the Mormon church advertising on their site? Don't you think that's weird? I mean WTF?

I'd say that CAGcast 115 marks the point where Cheapy's minstrel show humor stops being a self-aware gag and starts toeing the line of straight-up hatred.

Racism? Ironic humor? Genius ambiguity? Hard to say. In any case, I'm sure living in Japan, where there are no black people besides Bob Sapp, doesn't help much.

I cry inside... but laugh outside. Go figure.

I've been to tokyo there are a lot of black people there.

Hey Cheapy & Wombat,
A few podcast ago you bashed some new type of game control and thought there could be no improvement to the current generation of controllers for game play.
I was wondering what you guys thought of the new Tom Clancy title End War? It's suppose to incorporate voice command with the 360 game play.
Do you think this will change the way we play video games? Will there be more voice command games in the future? What are your thoughts?

The show is great,
Showa50

PS....R6V2 came with a teaser video disc of some Frag Dolls playing End War if you wanna get a better idea of what I talking about.

In Cagcast 115 you discussed different potential game rating systems. One that was mentioned was listing a game as buy, rent, or pass. I like this system because it's simple and easy to use. But I would suggest adding another option. You should have buy, wait for the price drop, rent, or pass.

Like MikeC, I like the polling system where people vote Buy, Wait for Price Drop, Rent, Skip. It's quick and clear. More nuanced reviews can be saved for optional commentary.

A question for the CAGbag: Cheapy, have you had any experience with the Oshiya at train stations? I just saw a video of them in action and found it hilarious and disturbing at the same time.

Wombat,
I know you have touched up Star Wars: The Complete Saga for the DS before and mentioned how much you've enjoyed it. How does it compare to the console versions though? It is better in some ways? Or does it more just come down to the fact of whether I want to play it at home or on the go? Thanks.

Blimey Cheapy!

You've clearly never been to England, mate. CAGcast Episode 115 featured some fackin' awful fake accent.

More to the point, England had a crazy huge number of different accents, far more, in fact, than the US. It's way off the mark to say that everyone sounds like they've stepped out of Mary Poppins.

Have you never heard a Brummie, a Georgie or a Scouser speak? It's like they're talking a whole different language.

FPS Cover Systems

Cheapy, with so much emphasis "cover systems" in 3rd person & 1st person games these days, why do we not see more FPS games using the system incorporated into Medal of Honor: Frontlines? It seems more realistic & fun than for example the 3rd person view the in Rainbow Six Vegas series.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
You guys were talking about the fact that you are stuck with downloaded games for eternity with no recourse to get value back ie trade-in. How do you feel about the fact that no one takes back PC games? I cant stand it. I have Bioshock and Supreme Commander sitting here collecting dust. I guess it is easier when you download a game from XBOXLive or Steam and theres no game box too remind you that it isnt beening played.

Hey Cheapy, I was wondering, with the new updated controls available for Lair on the PSN, should reviewers go back and re-review the game since most of the complaints about the game are now fixed (i.e. the controls)? Or should the reviews stand because Factor 5 had one chance with the game (when it was released) and they blew it so tough shit for them? Or does it even matter at this point since many people have already forgotten about Lair?

Cheapy, have you heard the news? It looks as though the great and expensive state of N.Y. is trying to push through legislation that will require Amazon to charge tax for the products they sell to New Yorkers. Law makers claim that because Amazon has affiliates on the web who are registered in N.Y., that it has cause to charge the tax. Many are saying that instead of being charged with enforcing N.Y. tax laws, that they will instead drop all affiliates based out of N.Y. Will this affect CAG in any way?

Cheapy and Wombat, after hearing the last cagcast and most directly the "shovelware" posting on youtube I have a cruex about the no hard drive issue Harmonix and others are useing as a point on dening full ports of Rockband, Guitar hero and others .....Is everyone forgeting The WII does come with a memory card slot up front ? with 8gb , 16 gb, and even 32 gb SD cards on the market there Must be a way A company like Nintendo can either through software or firmware etc. can find a way to utilize this interface ......let me break it down this way .......
1. insert ,say a 32gb card into WII
2.download firmware or software to card
3.Nintendo sells song packs for Rockband in either WII ware or a seperate WII module on the home screen.
4.its then "downloaded" to the memory card making it a defacto hard drive
there , problem fixed ,Cheapy please forward this to Reggie and have him send me my check to...........jk , but what do you guys think of my fix ?

Hey cheapy, with the recent trailer for a new Naruto Game for the ps3 I was just wondering what are your thoughts on it? For me the graphics look so awesome that I swear I'm watching the actual show instead of gameplay footage. This also leads into another question do you think it is worth keeping the ps3, with only MGS4 what else do we have to look forward too?

My third question is, which I'm probably going to catch a lot of shit for, is have you ever thought about bringing in a guest co-host? I'm not really a big wombat fan, his stories and humor are just horrible in my opinion, and I notice every once in a while that sometimes you also get kind of tired of his humor.

Cheapy and wombat, I was curious if you have been able to confirm the actual weight support capabilities of Wii fit. As one of the larger American gamers who wants to purchase this, I would like to know its capabilities before I crush it. I'm not far over the 300 mark but my height coupled with my fullness of life makes me mildly leary of purchasing it. Great show as always, look forward to many more episodes. - The Kope

CheapyD,

I wish I didn't have to ask this question but it is something that many of us here on the message board worry about. When you and Wombat die and the podcast is done with, where would you recommend we go? Do you have a contingency plan for the operations of this website or will it become a lost ship in the sea of the internet once your guys are no longer alive?

I am just a little scared, I don't to lose this community any time soon but I don't see any way of avoiding it unless you guys have a well thought out post-life plan.

Thanks for helping us get through this.

Hey Cheapy & Wombat, love the show, got a question for you on Wii Shovelware. If these games sell so well for being so bad mainly because they're cheap and people are desperate for wii games, when is a game company going to get a clue and start putting out good games for a low price? It seems to me that if something like Carnival Games can sell 1.1 million copies, then a great game at the same price would go through the roof. A great example is Boom Blox: it seems like it would be accessable enough for casual, non-gamers, but at the $50 price most of them will probably pass it and pickup 2 $20 shovel ware games instead. Do you think that real game companies will ever get a clue or do you think that as long as shovel ware sells, they won't even bother with good budget games for the wii?

PS-Cheapy, if you like minstrel shows so much you should do a youtube video in blackface.

Dearest CheapyD,

Given the recent increase in your references to Howard Stern and the way your laugh at times reminds me of Howard's baritone bellow, it got me wondering; if you're effectively "Howard" on the CAGcast, who is Wombat? Is he your "Robin"? Your "Artie"? Maybe "Bababooey" (a.k.a. "Fa-fa-flunky", "Ta-ta-toothy", etc.)?? A combination of those people? Someone else/some others? (Does his penchant for dress-up ring of George Takei?)

On a related note, would you care to divulge some CAGs that you consider to be 'charter members' in your own "Wack Pack"? And who makes less sense to you...Beetlejuice or me?

Hi Cheapy and Wombat,

On last week's show you were talking about Xbox LIVE issues relating to having to be logged in to access content on a different console. Ever since I read the article a while back on the Consumerist about requesting a license reset for Xbox LIVE Arcade titles I have been trying to get mine reset as well. After being hung up on by three different Xbox LIVE Customer Support reps, the final answer for me is a big fat "NO". Even though I have had to return three Xbox systems for RROD issues, I replaced my 4th replacement CORE console for a Halo 3 Special Edition (with HDMI). Their explaination was that I could have my licenses reset onto another CORE system, but not a different SKU. I pay these A-holes $50 a year and have spent several hundred dollars on Arcade content. My current living situation doesn't have access to Broadband anymore, so basically I'm SOL.

Thanks for the great show. I look forward to hearing you guys argue all week long.

P.S. Wombat, I'd appreciate it if you sent me a percentage of your UGO wages seeing that I visit now on a daily basis. I think 4 cents would do for starters.

Hello CheapyD and Wombat!

A few Cagcasts back, I remember Cheapy mentioning his old Xbox 360 and its rocket-like noise output. I am currently having the same problem. I live in a small basement and don't play games too loudly so when I insert a disc into my Xbox 360, my ears start ringing because of the jet fighter taking off beside my TV and it's really distracting my all-important cheap ass gaming. With GTA IV coming out in a couple of weeks, I'm starting to lean towards getting it on the PS3, but I am reluctant because of DLC, XBOX live, and whatnot. Should I intentionally try to RROD my fucking console in order to get it replaced, or bend down and take the ear raping like a man? Help me CheapyD and Wombat, you're my only hope.

Please insert whatever praise for the show and hosts you feel appropriate here.

OK, now onto the question. I am a 36 year old gamer. I have a decent career and am finally in a place in my life where I can spend a little extra money on myself. I have started collecting all the older consoles that I either owned as a child and some of the consoles that I always wanted but never had the money to buy growing up. So my question to you both and the rest of the CAG Community is this. For older consoles such as the Nintendo NES, Nintendo SNES, Nintendo 64, Playstation One, SEGA Dream Cast, SEGA Genesis, SEGA Saturn, and others what games would you recommend for these systems and maybe correlate them to games today. For example I really like the HALO series so I would recommend Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64, or while I have no recent comparison I would recommend Elevator Action for the Nintendo NES just because it is a corny but fun game to play.

Cheapy/Wombat,

Since the Howard Stern show is in hiatus right now, I've been listening to old CAGcasts. I've found that one of the most entertaining aspects of this is hearing the speculation or predictions which ended up coming true (the 360 will get a camera peripheral) or being way off (Super Smash Brothers Brawl would be a launch title for the Wii). Could you guys please take a few moments to make some more predictions so in 2010 I can go back and listen to them and be entertained by them all over again?

By the way, the show is better than ever .. ya know it's gotta be when it fills the void left by a lack of new Stern shows. Keep up the good work.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

With the recent reveal of a remake of Sony's PS2 horror game Siren for the PS3, I wanted to ask if there were any last-gen games you would love to see get a remake to either take advantage of the graphical upgrade or give them a second chance to fix key issues with the games?

I also wanted to ask you guys what your favorite minor feature for each of the three consoles that nobody talks about? How about the most annoying minor feature they have? And the minor feature you'd like to see them get in the future?

I'm clearly in the "late adopter" category. I usually wait for things to shape up before buying the next next-gen system. I'm so frustrated with this round of next-gen systems, though. Nearly a year and change after PS3's release, there's still no clear winner; especially after the whole HD DVD/Blu-Ray shake-up.

I was finally going to bite the bullet and get a 360 this week, but then I read this editorial about how PS3 is the rig of the future because games 2 to 3 years down the line will be too big for standard DVDs and will HAVE to be on Blu-Ray. As a result, 360 owners will likely have to buy a Blu-Ray drive for their 360 (for an exorbitant price) or Microsoft will release 360s with Blu-Ray. Microsoft claims games in the future will be downloadable, so not to worry about the Blu-Ray issue. This doesn't make any sense, though. I don't want to have all my games on a hard drive. What if the drive crashes? There could $1000 worth of IP on that drive.

Don't get me wrong. I like everything about the 360. I'm all about online-competition, so the 360 seems to be for me. However, PSN could improve, but you can't improve hardware without an additional and significant investment.

Should I keep waiting to buy a system? I don't want to get a 360 now after waiting so long only to learn a few months later that a 360 with Blu-Ray is coming out.

Help me! I've got next-gen blue balls and they hurt like hell.

With Grand Theft Auto 4 about to hit, I'm wondering where I should buy my 360 copy. Hey, I just purchased a 360, couldn't pass up on the cheap ass deal I got. Recently I have been playing a lot of Rock Band at my friend's dorm (since I commute to school) and have been having a lot of fun with it. I usually get designated to the drums since no one seems to want to play them and I actually really enjoy them. I used to play the drums in high school but never got too far with them. My friend offered me if I wanted to buy the drums off him so that we could all play online and such. I would just get the game used somewhere.

I know you both play Rock Band and since I just started playing I am not too sure of the staying power of the game. I feel that I might get bored of it after a few hours and since I don't own the game, playing at the dorms is more of a novelty.

I guess my question is, does the game actually have legs to it? I know there's a lot of DLC and stuff, but I never got into Guitar Hero and like I said before it feels more like a novelty for me at this point, but novelties can be really fun too.

Also...Wombat,

Are you interested at all in Darksiders? From what I've seen it looks interesting and I thought you might be interested since Joe Madureira who did Battle Chasers is designing it. I didn't really get into the comic series, but the few I did read I enjoyed.

edit: After my first day with xbl I must say that it is a gigantic leap from using the psn. The volume of things to download and buy if you please. The online gaming, just the games, ehh, not bad, that part is pretty equivalent to psn. People don't talk as much as I expected, and neither did I since my mic seems to be broken(the one that came w/ my 360). I must admit now that I did not think paying $50 for an online service wasn't fair, but I must retract my past judgments. It might not be worth the whole $50 if you are not using all of the services and just playing online, but it is a small price to pay for the service.

As a question, what do you think is stopping the other companies (nin/sony) to blatantly rip off xbox live? Noone (us cags) would care, in fact people would praise them for having the testicular fortitude to admit that secret codes and being free (lack of features) is competely the wrong way to go. If you got the games, which both sony and nintendo have, COD4(also huge on xbl) and SSBB respectively, than you can charge for an online service and consumers will just have to keep taking it up the a$$. Look at WOW, wtf. Who came up with that sh*t, "hey guys, lets make a game that is like other games, but, now here's the catch, we charge over $120 a year for people to play it"...Brilliant. The only faults with xbl/the 360 is lack of wifi (that sh*t is killin' me) and for some reason I download slower than psn.

Comic question for Wombat:

Do you have plans to add the comic section to the CagCast? I think there have been enough requests to get this goin.

Also, do you read TMNT comics? The series (volume 4) just returned from a 2 year hiatus with a new issue. I know these were more popular in the 80's, but I still enjoy reading the current series. TMNT is a nice change from the chaotic and sometimes hard to follow Marvel and DC universes.

Cheapy - I don't see how you can say it's about time for a new DS.

I don't understand what the rush is to replace game systems nowdays. This model of business (that they've co-opted from Apple) pretty much makes technology disposable, but at a premium price.

You seem to be advocating buying new systems over and over again - putting shame to your name of a Cheap Ass Gamer.

As a side note, with the announcement of the re-release of Siren for PS3, do you think game companies are relying too much on remakes to supplement their income? It seems like companies are relying too much on churning out remakes at random to capitalise on nostalgia or to make a quick buck.

Hey Cheapy! I have an idea for your show and a youtube video. We see all the time these Japanese knock-offs of popular gaming machines, mp3 players etc and wonder, "Who is buying this?" Well, why not you Cheapy?! Pick one up and give us a review, if nothing else but for interesting video and a laugh. The latest I found was something called "V-Sport" and looks like a Wii knockoff but with 11 games for about $80. Here is a link to the Wired story I found. What do you think?

Cheapy n' Wombat:
Now that we have two of the three major gaming companies with a motion sensored controller, don't you guys think that it is only fair for microsoft to also have motion controls?

I know that the sixasis was (sort of) Sony's idea, and the wiimote was Nintento's idea, but given that the gaming community always begs for new kinds of games, don't you guys think that the threemote is neccesary in some way for the 360 to keep being succesful? It could easily become a wii clone.. but with better graphics!

I know you sort of covered this in the latest episode, but if you think that this will a 100% ripoff of the wiimote if it ever comes out what new features would you suggest microsoft should add on the threemote to make it stand out?

Why oh why is the PS3 so half assed on everything? Its a year and a half in now, why do we have no in game XMB with in game invites yet? Why do we get half assed releases with no single player such as Warhawk and Socom confrontation? Why do we get to pay $40 for a demo of Gran Turismo 5 instead of the real thing (Forza came out complete a long time ago). Why did my half assed six axis controller take a year and a half and a new purchase to get rumble which existed 10 years ago? Why don't we still have an online experience worth playing? How much longer will they delay home? (remember when it was supposed to come out in November of 07?). How come when I do decide to play online noone has a headset because Sony was too half assed to include one in the box like Microsoft? Why did I waste money on Motorstorm when after about 2 races the game gets to hard to play in race mode, but guess what? -Thats the only damn mode there is in the whole game! HALF-ASSED! Another thing- no voice chat in Hot Shots Golf? I am beginning to see a trend here. One other thing where they actually got worse- they used to have complete backward compatibility on the 60GB PS3 and now only the 40GB is out there with no PS2 game backward compatibility. They have an 80GB sku with limited backward compatibility but guess what? -They are too half assed to make more of them until the middle of June. Sony has said the PS3 will have a 10 year life span. Well it might take them that long to get their shit together. Don't even get me started on how every time I want to play a PS3 game I have to sit through 20 minutes of downloads and installs because the game was half-assed in the first place. Hell, they were even too half assed to include an HDMI cable or component cable in the box of my $600 PS3 to watch movies or even play games in high definition. <end rant>

The first question is for Wombat and the second is for CheapyD. I was wondering will you be picking up your free comics for free comic book day on May 3rd ? I know Cheapy says you ask for free stuff a lot so I thought this would be perfect for you. Also is there a free comic book day in Japan and will you be getting any comics? I know I will. I have not read or bought a comic since free comic book about 3 years ago. Thanks I love the show!

You seem to be kissing Wombat's ass lately. I know there have been a lot of pro-Wonbot comments coming up lately, but it doesn't mean you have to give up your own opinion. It seems like you make an opinion and by the end of the conversation Wombat gets you to passively agree to his opinion. Its not that I like to see you guys fighting, but I'd rather see you keep your own opinions and move on to the next topic as opposed to you just folding to Wombat. Just because he's right a lot of the times, doesn't mean he's always right.

Hi guys,

I have heard talk about a Magic the Gathering game to XBLA. Have either of you played Magic? Also do you know anything more about this? I am excited at the prospect of playing online but hope it is not as pathetic as the PC game or the horrid Battlegrounds game. IMO they should give everyone the current sets with the cost of the game (let's say 1200 pts) and if people want to buy additional sets they can do so. That would be a better model than charging people 200 MSP for virtual boosters.

Thanks guys,

I tried to join the Live cagcast but it kept saying error. I could hear you but that was all.

Dear Cheapy and Wombat,

I wondered what your thoughts on how gamerscore and getting achievements can effect your fun in enjoying a game. I shamefully have borrowed games such as TMNT and Open Season just for nerd points. For example, I enjoyed Gears of War but part of the multiplayer experience was to try and get the 100 kill achievements and not to play against others. Have you noticed this in your gaming patterns on the 360? I know getting achievements is just another thing to continue the longetivity of a game, but do you think it can affect a gamers wanting to play the actual game and not for nerd points?

Cheapy (and Wombert),

Question - did you ever get any sort of acknowledgment or statement (official/unofficial) regarding your Xbox 360 failure poll? I ask because I sit here packing up my third broken Xbox 360.

I love the console and the games available for it, but never in my gaming life have I had to replace a single console once, let alone the same console multiple times. This is just ridiculously absurd.

I can't find a single person on my friends list these days who still has their original 360, so as far as I am concerned the failure rate is over 100%.

I am not experiencing the RROD this time - this time my 360 just decided to no longer output video. I restarted several times, tried both component and HDMI cables - and switched inputs as well as TV sets - no luck at all.

I would love to hear someone at Microsoft address the CAG poll and see what sort of spin they can put on it.

Hey guys, with all this 80's nostalgia running rampant (gi joe movie, transformers, ghostbusters game), what 80s franchise would you like to see resurrected in game form. I guess we can discount knight rider since that's just too obvious. My pick would be the inhumanoids from the cartoon realm and They Live from movies. That film just seemed ripe for a sequel and running around killing aliens as rowdy rod piper seems like a damned good time.

Hey guys:

Do you think that we will ever see legal action against a developer when their downloadable content is simply unlocking something that is already on the disk? It seems like if you pay for a game, you should be able to play anything that's on it. It's the equivalent of buying a car and the dealership locks the trunk and will only open it if you buy their service package.

Hey you guys,

I'd like to hear you revisit your Legend of Frank discussion briefly, but this time instead of the characters changing, the title of game changes. Games with better mechanics like Saint's Row get overlooked without the kind of brand recognition that a game like Grand Theft Auto exploits to sell millions of copies sight-unseen. After seeing the umpteenth Final Fantasy or Need for Speed game reaching the top 10 last year, it is becoming discouraging seeing good original titles being stomped out at retail by these giants of the industry. Since it is now all but proven that game sales and review scores don't correllate, is it only an issue of marketing budgets that push games to the top of the sales charts?

now that we know that the PS3 version is in 640p .... does this mean that Rockstar needs to issue us new 720, 1080 i/p enabled discs? Is this a mistake that can be considered in the same category of mistakes as a mono GHIII (wii) ? {although I can see this being made on purpose}

Do you think that Nintendo feels left out in regards to this GTA money now circulating and perhaps will they take this into account in their next console. (specifically... will their next console be more up to par with other consoles on the market so they don't miss out of multiplatform games. (i.e. Assassins Creed, Call of Duty 4, and now GTA IV).

Ok, I have a few questions, some more game-related than others....

- Do you guys feel the constant sequels is a detriment to the longevity to games? I remember back around the SNES times, games several years old would still be good sellers. Whipping out an old Nintendo Power, in December '96, 13 SNES games in the top 20 were there for over a year. Five were even there for over 2, and a couple even longer than that! Now it seems that after a a few months, even the best of games will fade into obsurity. And for any traders/resalers, the value of these games plummets after those months, especially after the expected sequel is announced for 10-14 months later.

- Have you guys ever thought about making Cheapy Reviews? Since both of you talk about the whatever games you are playing in the Cast, and the good and bad points, why not make written reviews about the games? Maybe even add more details to things you mention in the show. And maybe avoid giving number reviews so that way nobody doesn't not buy a game because you guys gave it a dreaded (but decent) 7. Or maybe instead of reviewing a new game just because it's new, review a game that is on sale/going on sale soon. If Speedy mentions Game X is going to be cheap next week, I'm sure you guys can convince some unsure buyers to get it... or stay away. Or maybe even pick random games and use your retail relations to get a special CAG sale on a site (GQD maybe) for recently reviewed games.

- To Cheapy: Even though this question may sound insincere, have you ever confused Tai for another baby when you leave him at daycare? There are a lot of non-Asians that tend to have a hard trouble telling Asians apart so I'm just wondering if it ever happened to you.

- To Wonbot: Do you eat healthy/organic food at all? I'm pretty sure there is a Whole Foods store in Manhasset, so do you ever go there?

I was thinking about your Super Smash Frank argument a few months ago. You guys were talking about how some franchises bring in good review scores and positive reception based on name recognition. But in the case of Sonic Chronicles, some people are dismissing it simply based on the name and characters. Hey Cheapy -

I've been having some problems with my games. I think microsoft should use a different kinda of packaging for their games. The cd holder is a bit clingy and it has been damaging my games. In total it's damaged 4 games most recently GTA4. I was disappointed to see that my brand new game not even a week old is already unreadable. It sucks that I have to fight with the clinginess of the cd holder just to release my game, doing this multiple times causes the game disc to form a small crack in the center part where the disc is being held in the drive/holder. I started a thread about this issue and found that I wasn't alone.

Question: Is there a way we can get a word out to microsoft about this problem? I've tried Customer Service but they are saying it's my fault. Plus I wouldn't call them unless it was a last resort anyways. Please Help!

PS: If this makes the show my screen name is pronounced pop - emo - goth Thanks!

I have a quick question for Wonbot. (I've noticed that if you call Wombat by a funny name you have a better chance of getting your question answered)

How do you pick your winners for all of the contests? Do you just click on a random page of the contest forum and then a random person? Do you have someone pick a random number and that post wins? Does a funny contest response have any better chance of winning than a boring one? And have you ever given the prize to the person that posts first or last?

I have yet to win ANYTHING and so I'm looking for some advice (c'mon... send something my way!)

Why oh why is the 360 so half assed on EVERYTHING? It's been a whole 2 years about now and why do we still have consoles getting red ringed? Why do we get half assed Xbox Live games that cost a fortune? Why do we have to buy games (Such as Beautiful Katamari) only to buy it again in DLC? Why does Xbox Live still have problems that causes it to be down for days without any compensation? Why are we nickel and dimed for everything (I have to pay for a Gamerpic?) Why is it every time I decide to play online all I get is a bunch of pubescent boys that think they are hot shit in my Mature games? How come games still don't require a harddrive?! Why is Xbox Live plastered with Ads even though I am paying 50 dollars a month and for all the content I access? Why is Microsoft STILL sucking balls in every other country? Why is my only choice of accessing HD Movies on my 360 is either buying a dead HDDVD drive or waiting a day or two to download? Why wont they let me hide achievements because I don't want be in a contest with every game I play (sometimes when I don't like a game, I don't want to play it. And having 25/1000 points on PDZ is just annoying) I see a trend here, and it makes it worse because I don't even have the option to be able to access all my Xbox1 games, because it isn't 100% compatible! Why am I forced to buy MICROSOFT Harddrive to play games(No other cheap options?) ? And I can't even use a USB harddrive to transfer saves... Why is cheapy such a 360 fanboy? Why do I type in one giant block of text? And why is wombat so awesome? </endrant>

Question 1

With the impending death of E3*. One thing I've heard video game reporters say is that it's actually better for their constituents (us the readers) because at E3 they're rushed and don't get the chance to make in depth coverage of the games. They say this contrast what they commonly hear from readers who like E3 because it's one time of the year when they get a ton of news at once. I've given it some thought and I agree with the readers.

I'm sure during E3 any single company will be rushed to get as much coverage as they can, but I think if we look at the universal coverage an event like E3 gets if IGN doesn't cover game A then Gamespot will. If X-Play barely looks at game B then Kotaku will. My point being that the overlap of many sources covers the deficiencies of any one source, in the end yielding a massive wealth of information to simple gamers like myself (which is why I'm sad to see the event die). Would you agree or disagree?

*after last year's lackluster performance and this year's lack of support I think we can agree on that.

well I'm not sure if you're trying to have CheapyD and Wombat answer or if you really don't know but you should be aware that in the eyes of the game companies there is no difference. They are keenly opposed to the used game market and are very much aware of how much potential money they lose. It was a big deal a while back. At times it was given primary blame for the rising costs of games. There were rumors before launch that the PS3 wouldn't allow you to play the games on more than one console effectively eliminating the used game market. It's very hard to find these articles because googling used games gets a lot of noise but I was able to find of the primary articles that claimed used games were bad for the industry.

Gamestop is a glorified pawn show (link (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/03/30/))
Used games market takes money from developers (link (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8632&Itemid=2&limit=1&limitstart=0))
PS3 won't play used games. (Link (http://www.gamerandy.com/archives/2005/11/playstation_3_t.shtml))
Developers don't like used games (Link (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/28694/Pressure-piles-on-pre-owned))

Of course I should point out that these people don't speak for everyone. Even in the industry there are those who are ambivalent or agnostic towards the used game market.

Do Developers buy used games? (Link (http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20061020/qotw_01.shtml))

Personally this isn't japan I don't trust people to turn in games decently to gamestop. I'll buy a used game from a person from time to time but I avoid gamestop like the plague. As much as I distaste digital distribution for full games I can easily see it as the 'solution' to the used game market and that's all fine and dandy in theory but in practice I see it turning out disastrous

Question 2

With regards to Mortal Kombat vs DC I'd like to propose a question primarily to Wombat. One of the major concerns 'fans' have is how can any of the characters from Mortal Kombat face Superman without some sort of krptonite weaponry. Am I the only one who isn't this focused on canon accuracy? This isn't like Yoda being too short to hit in Soul Calibur. Would there be any point to the game if you couldn't fight Superman? Do people understand that these are games and if you put too much 'realism' in games they fail? Technically Sub-Zero shouldn't be able to freeze the Flash but the game is pointless otherwise. I read an article about this company that was developing a 16th century MMO and went all out making it historically accurate and the game ended up being no fun. Noone wanted to hammer horseshoes in a game. Noone likes farming for gold. Noone enjoys attacking rats because they're too weak to go after some real beasties. It seems to me that gamers like to nit pick over games not being realistic and them complain about games being boringly so.

These include additional weapons in army of two, the red hulk in the upcoming hulk game. I think it is worse than paying to unlock content on a disc. At least with that can be obtained later on. This method prevents you from ever having it at a later date.

usually not. as far as I can tell I haven't seen an unlockable that was exclusive to bonus excepting maybe some WOW mounts. All these exclusive downloads you can get thru other means. Rainbow Six Vegas had some unlockable that was free at BestBuy but you could just earn it in the game for free.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat! Hope you have enjoyed your sorta vacations from the show.

Here is a question that has been a little bit of discussion in the weekly Gamestop / EB thread. Why are the vast majority of DS and to a lesser extent PSP games, cart or UMD only in their used selection? Most CAGs are looking for complete DS and PSP games. My theory is that most of these games are stolen and traded in for cash instead of store credit. I don't see how you could hang onto that little DS cart, but loose the case, cover, and manual. Its not unusual for me to see things that are cart only, and only be a few weeks old.

I think GS/EB should start only accepting complete trade ins, or at the very least make complete a requirement for trading in for cash, thus eliminating a legal fence for theives. I won't buy an incomplete title because I really think I would be supporting theft.

What are your thoughts?

The Wii is my only current-gen system. I've been holding off on getting a 360 for over a year now due to reliability issues, but there are so many games that I want to play now — Portal, Rock Band, Mass Effect, GTA4, BioShock, CoD4, and downloadable games like Ikaruga and Rez HD. I'm moving to a new apartment soon, and will of course be putting together a new living room entertainment setup, so it seems like a natural time to add a new box to my console family. But I'm still imagining how pissed I'd get if/when the system that just cost me hundreds of dollars died on me, and I had to send it to Mexico for 2 months and deal with all sorts of nonsense with lost accounts and whatever else that involves. Do you recommend that I continue holding off and hope that the rumored Jasper chipset's shrunken GPU solves these problems, or do you think the extra months of gameplay are worth the risk of just buying a Falcon console now?

Also, IF the falcon console is released later in the year like some people are predicting, do you think there's any likelihood of a price drop to go along with it?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

Do you think there are any games with online multiplayer that over-reach with what they're offering?

While playing Grand Theft Auto 4 in Free Mode with friends, a great time was had by all, but when playing against random people (even with friends) it was no fun at all. I feel they should've just left it at the Open City Free Mode and maybe put in a replay feature.

CheapyD and Wombat,

You guys need an intervention. You have this never-ending hate-fest against DLC that's made before the game's release, and you guys seriously need to get over it.

Sure, there may be cases where the developers are charging for something that might have been free in the pre-DLC days. But I would expect in most cases that the DLC is extra content that the developer invested extra money, beyond the core budget, to make.

If developers and publishers invest extra money to create extra content, I don't understand what's so wrong with providing that extra content at an extra (and optional) fee.

When it really comes down to it, the right thing to do is to look at a product and ask yourself: "Is this game a good deal for the money?"

I say this with love: Get over your sense of entitlement. Just because a company develops something doesn't mean you deserve it for free with a purchase. Do you deserve a full-fledged expansion for free after you buy its original game? Of course not.

What if you knew the expansion was made before the original game was released? Is that somehow different?

Each piece of DLC is basically a tiny expansion in and of itself. Some DLC is worth it. Some isn't. Same games are a good price for the value. Some aren't.

I'm thinking of starting a podcast of my own. I've got a few questions if you both would be so kind as to answer.

1) If I put music into the podcast, such as an intro, can I use a favorite song? I don't know copyright laws, but I'm not making any money off the podcast...so can I get in trouble for using music from a fovorite album?

2) How many different programs do you use to create CAGcast? What program do you use to talk together, what recording program do you use? Is there a specific program needed to edit or compile it afterwards, etc. ?

3) How do I get it on iTunes?

4) Are there any other tips or instructions you can give me? By tips, do you have a favorite style microphone, a hated program for recording, how much money I should expect to invest to get started, etc. ?

If there is a website you could guide me to to answer these questions instead that would be fine. I simply trust the people actually making the show rather than some possibly bogus website trying to get me to advertise with them or give them money.

THANKS Cheapy and Wombat. You guys have an amazing show.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
I just registered to ask you guys this so hopefully it gets answered. I was wondering if you guys knew that Xbox live stopped anyone under 18 from downloading "M" rated games, Videos, etc....They started this after the Fall Update. Now Shortly after doing this they said they want to basically follow the ESRB but with online stuff. Now really pissed I called customer support I talked to them about how I pay the same $50 a year everyone else does and get 1/3 of the content. Then they went through the ESRB thing and said how serious they take this blah blah blah, then he tells me to get around this make a silver account and possibly consider upgrading it to gold to get the demos and what not on time. So I made a silver account and about a month later got fed up having to wait a week later to get demos I called again and they insist the same thing: create a silver account and this got me thinking they ban 3/4 of there subscribers from downloading content and tell them to make a silver account they got 3/4 more subscribers, they say if you want clan support make a silver account hence more subscribers. What I'm asking is with there announcement that they have 12million subscribers now do you think they did all of this on purpose? If they get a lot of there subscribers to make 2 or 3 accounts just to get the full experience they get a lot moe subscribers making Xbox Live seem more popular more dominant than the others.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

What re-occuring types of new stories do you dread seeing post on 1up, Joystiq, Kotaku, Digg, etc. that you don't think really has any type of merit as a piece of news?

To kind of add to last week's discussion of downloadable games and previous weeks' discussions on DLC in general, what are your thoughts on DLC for downloadable games? Do you pay attention to DLC for games you loved, focus more on good DLC despite the game, or disregard it all? I'm very interested in get the two add-on packs for Super Stardust HD because of what they add (mew modes, music, etc) and how great the game is, though there aren't really many XBLA/PSN games that offer much content in any DLC they might create. As a final question on the topic, what do you guys think of the echochrome developers taking the best user-created levels each week and putting them into free download packs that you get to play with for the week or so until the next update? Do you think that's another example of how different Microsoft and Sony handle user-created content on their system when N+ had its sharing network for user-created levels stripped just before its launch?

After my 2nd RROD, I think MS is really getting all the sales from those that bought 2 or 3 consoles while waiting for their consoles to return. (also as a backup machine).

I'm thinking of getting a second console too, but the shop will mod it with an extra cooling system as well as a new chip which will allow me to play both original as well as the downloaded games. (all these with a little extra).

With the new cooling system, so far, no one has any problem with the RROD, I assume this was because it has prevented the chip from overheating. Aside from looking ugly with a fan attached to the external casing, I'm willing to pay the extra cost of installation.

My question is, should I do it?

PS: they have a button to disable the chip so I can log on to MS live. I will not be banned from Live. (and will be able to play Downloaded live games).

I was wondering if you would ever add a gameclub segment in the show, similar to what the Player One Podcast does.

It could be with an older game that is good, but that many may have missed out on. You could create a thread about it where people could disccuss playing the game, and any memories they might have about the game.

What do you chaps think about HAZE getting only a 4.5/10 from IGN?

The PS3 seems to suffer far more than the 360 from exclusives being hyped but then receiving mediocre reviews when they hit the shelves. Games like LAIR, Heavenly Sword, Eye of Judgement and now HAZE are all touted as the next great game but fall short.

Do you think this is damaging the PS3's image?

Hey Guys, i was just listening to the big bomb podcast based on Wombat's suggestion. I enjoyed the show until they got to their mail section and started talking about spoilers. They stated that 90 days after a game comes out that talking about the ending of the game isn't a spoiler. Their argument is that if it takes you longer than that to finish the game then you don't really care. What do you think?

Personally, i only have a couple free hours each night, and i have to split those with gaming and spending time with the Mrs. If you take something like GTA IV, it is unlikely that i will be able to finish that in 90 days. Especially if i occasionally play some multiplayer. And i can tell you right now that i most certainly do care.

Hey Cheapy,

More re: the Paid DLC,

I totally agree with you when you say that most of the DLC is planned by developers early in the project. But so are typical expansions. In both cases, this extra content is planned ahead of time as something that will take extra work, but will likely yield extra revenue (and presumably profit) to be worth the effort.

Beautiful Katamari for 360 is a great example of where you're right to complain -- that game, as shipped, had less content than any previous iteration in the series at a much higher price. Then they turn around and charge us quite a bit of money for levels that were on the disc, and whose inclusion would have made the game about the size it should have been. So I agree -- they obviously cut off pieces of what would have been a normal-sized game and then tried to sell us those pieces for even more money.

But in many cases, the DLC is planned and created at *extra* cost, outside the core project budget. They say, hey, while we have all these artists and QA and developers on staff and fresh on this project, let's have them stick around for an extra couple of weeks to create some extra content we'll sell as DLC. In those cases, that work only happens at an additional cost to the developer, and is only justified by the fact that they will be selling it seperately for extra revenue.

The problem is that as customers, we never really know when the developer created this content at extra cost to themselves vs. when they just lopped off part of what should be in the core game to sell seperately.

Which brings me back to my real point -- rather than getting bent out of shape that a piece of DLC is available near the time of a game's release, our focus should be on determining whether or not the game and its DLC is a good value for our money.

Take Oblivion for example. The core game was an exceptional value. Horse armor was a bad value. The later DLC was again a good value. Does any of that change if we were to find out that some of it was developed in whole or in part before the game shipped?

For what it's worth, I say all of this as a developer that works in the industry. You're right -- these kinds are made early in a project. But what you don't acknowledge is that the decision is often to employe extra resources to make that DLC, and that it wouldn't be made if they weren't able to sell it seperately.

Sorry for the length, and I know this is way too long for you to read on-air. It's more a manifesto to you guys to stop judging and hating on developers based on when DLC was created or released, and to instead start judging developers based on the value of what they offer.

Cheapy D,

I have never felt the need to write in on a topic until episode #119. I thought the show was going well until you got to the CAGbag portion of the show. A member writes you asking about racial issues in Japan.

You proceed to talk about your experiences in Japan personally, and how white people are accepted or deemed OK when interracial dating or in your case marriage is concerned. (Please use this moment to imagine a needle sliding across an LP)

You then go into how if the person is black, this is, I guess, frowned upon. WTF!! Your wife's grandmother tells her not to bring home any black ones. I thought I might have missed something and to replay that section several times. After you said that theres about 3 seconds of silence and you say "and she didn't". WTF!!!

I couldn't believe this. First of all I find you unqualified to answer the question beyond your own personal experience. The whole black thing and grandmother story, unless you're going to bring a japanese person or your wife or her grandmother to shed some light on what that's all about, you'd have been better off keeping your mouth shut. I listened to to this garbage coming out of your mouth and i can only assume that you just didn't have any idea how this sounded. The grandmother bit and the silence after before you said "and she didn't" as if to say this is the wisdom of the ages, never has a truer word been spoken, high five on that one grandma. I would have appreciated this more if you'd have given some background on what could have prompted a statement like that. At least I would have had some understanding.

A few shows past, you talked about some black persons response to some industry related issue. I believe it was about something to do with there not being a lot or rather next to no actual black main characters in video games. Then you started in with " Hello dere I be sick of playing the video games with the white-ums". All I could think about was Al Jolson in black face saying Mammy as I listened to this BS. I believe Wombat made a comment about your doing that. Frankly, I'm surprised he had nothing to say this time around.

Cheapy, I say all this to remind you that more than the white-ums listen to your show. It's this kind of crap that keeps ignorance and intolerance perpetuated. I would think that next to a black person, If not more so, a Jewish person would understand this most. It would have been better to just say what you've experienced personally and left it that.

I don't know I took a completely different interpretation of that than Nastirh. While I did fine your mother-in-law's statements to be offensive I didn't feel that you in anyway endorsed them, except to the point where you were please that your wife selected you.

As a white new yorker in Japan I would never expect you to have an in depth understanding of eastern culture much less exhaustive knowledge of Japanese-specific cultural stereotypes. That said you've lived there for a while and you're wife is Japanese it's perfectly understandable that you've picked up a thing or two. In the deep south (Ga) there are various stereotypes that just weren't in other places I've lived (Ca, Fl) sometimes it's so blatant even my sister's friends from France pick up on them and ask me about it. If you say the Japanese are wary of Black people I don't take it as an endorsement I take it as something that must be pretty blatant if a white outsider can pick up on it.

well, maybe cheapy wasn't being very sensitive about it but I think it's VERY CLEAR that he was being sarcastic!

the "and she didn't" comment didn't seem to me to be "approval" in any way shape or form. I think it's obvious (at least to me) that he thinks it was a pretty awful attitude.

Japan has a very strange relationship with "African American" culture to say the least. They are fascinated with it in a lot of ways and can wind up being very offensive (to us).

i'm getting a little vaklempt. here's a topic:

comic books make lousy video games and video games make lousier comics.

while i already have some counterpoints to my own point, i thought wombat might enjoy talking about this topic while cheapy could bring it the sort of everyman view needed to balance out wombat's nerdiness regarding the matter.

and another one:
do you think we're all going to get screwed at roughly the same time by sony's asinine decision to refuse us rechargeable batteries? will there be a sixaxis d-day of sorts as batteries around the world simply crap out? i have to wonder what the long-term charge-holding life expectancy is on these batteries, and i'm curious as to whether or not sony already has a contingency plan for the potential pr and customer service nightmare. i've heard talk that sony is prepared to exchange our controllers or something to that effect, but it seems an unlikely solution, one that would cost the company far too much. do you think sony will actually deliver on this? and if they do, do you think they will tack on a 5-dollar charge to make up the difference from sixaxis to dual shock 3?

Excellent podcast, I listen to every episode, even now when I'm working for Royal Caribbean and spend most of my time out at sea. I have my dad download the cagcast and put it on a CD for me and mail it to me. Anyway...

Why do you think that video games aren't typically on sale the week they're released like most major CD and DVD releases are? What is the difference that causes most games to be released at full price while music and movies are almost always cheaper the first week they're out?

Well, since we're on this thought train, and I had planned on posting this before crazy guy above...

Greetings, Cheapy. My grandmother offered similar advice to what your wife was told. In fact, my grandmother disowned a cousin who, at the time, was dating a black guy. Also, was your wife ever pressured to "keep" her "bloodline" "pure" by marrying another Japanese guy? Quotes for the words my grandmother used. My grandmother always stressed that importance and the superiority of the Japanese. My Japanese friends experienced similar, less extreme situations. Did your wife experience this as well? Apologies if the questions are too personal.

Thanks, sir.

Cheapy and Wombat,

What would be your "dream" DLC pricing system which would be fair for both developers and the consumers?
Also, do you think that developers should pay more attention to what consumers are saying when they release content? It seems like a lot of games' (especially Guitar Hero III) DLC is hit-and-miss.

If a Wii Hard drive was released, why would it have not been released with the release of WiiWare, I own a few WiiWare and VC games and have alot of savegames and find myself at times with only 10 or 15 blocks of free space. Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

With games like Prototype, Killzone 2, and Alan Wake being pushed to 2009. What game that's expected for a release in 2008 do you think is most likely to be pushed back to next year? Also, what will be out first: Killzone 2, Alan Wake, or CAG 2.0? ;)

If neither Rock Revolution, Guitar Hero World Tour, or Rock Band 2's instruments are compatible with all of the existing and upcoming instruments, what's the likelyhood that you'll even bother with these new games?

What topics do each of the big three companies need to cover at their E3 press conferences and what surprises do you think or hope will happen?

From time to time CheapyD and Wombat have questioned the wisdom of Sony in not emulating and improving upon the interface that Microsoft used. My question is to what extent to you think patent might have a role in this? Personally I doubt microsoft patented the ideas of their interface. I'm sure they can patent the technology driving the various aspects of Live but I doubt there's patents preventing Sony from building a similar/better interface inspired by MSoft.

Not to take 'credit' or anything lame like that. I wasn't trying to blatantly steal your 'ideas' I just didn't remember where I read it and I'm far too lazy to go back to every post on every site I had read at the time to see if it was on CAG or not. It was an interesting question so I just brought it over. If you were offended by this let me be the bigger person and officially apologize. I'm sorry.

Do you guys ever get annoyed at videos that show you nothing? The Shaun White video is sexy enough but nothing in the video is related to the game. No footage. nothing to hint at controls. "Cheapy and Wombat have questioned why the PS3 can't just emulate the 360 in its online system. I have a feeling it might have something to do with patents. Cheapy, in the latest episode, you suggested that Microsoft has been taught a lesson about making shoddy hardware by "the bottom line". You also state that Microsoft is losing "billions" of dollars in repairs (at least I think you said billions).

I have a theory that this is not the case and that the Red Ring of Death is actually making money for Microsoft.

1. People paid for many repairs before the warranty was extended.
2. Many people will not have their receipts or proper documentation to get free repairs when they need them.
3. Many people will not even know they are entitled to free repairs.
4. Non US residents are probably screwed, one way or another.
5. I have bought 2 360's, most of my friends have bought multiple systems at this point. How many have you bought? Microsoft is making a lot of money off of people buying multiple systems. I will make a bold guess that 20% of hardcore gamers have already bought at least 2 360's.

Isn't Microsoft finally posting profits in its game division? So when they designed a solid system, Xbox 1 they lost money. Designed a shoddy system, 360 and make money. I would be hesitant to buy a 720 in it's first year on the market.

i would have to agree with thadwhit, most people who buy an xbox 360 most of the time have to send it back to Microsoft for repairs, some people pay and people who have there warranty's don't even use them i wouldn't be surprised if most people who have warranty's don't use them because they either lose them or just flat out pay or buy another 360.
but i do agree with you cheapy, that Microsoft makes bad hardware and it is very annoying to have to send back a 360 that you baught only 2 to 3 years ago if not even earlier. hopefully the new 360 models will prove to be way better than its older models and hopefully it will last forever

Hey Cheapy & Wombat,

I figured by now everyone knows or should know Bioshock is coming out on the PS3. The question is you have both played the game on the 360 would either of you consider re-purchasing it for the PS3?

The rumor mill has it that the PS3 version will include bonus content, but not to the point where it is significant to the storyline and additional features involved with Home (most likely achievement based or something very similar).

As well it doesn't sound like 2K will be releasing another patch on the 360 that will include any extra features that the PS3 may get.

Last episode you discussed how if a game review doesn't have a score it couldn't get included in a metacritic/gameranking site. How would you guys feel about a game review aggregator site akin to rottentomatoes.com? As many Cags I loved the Earth Defense Force game. It was my first B rate game that I thoroughly enjoyed. My question is why aren't there more games like that? With Developers always harping about the excessive amounts of production costs it seems like a niche market that isn't being fully realized. I wondered what your guys' reaction to EGM not posting an official review of Metal Gear Solid 4 in the most recent issue. Instead, the editorial staff posted a round-table discussion of the game, and didn't include a score.

The move was apparently a response to Konami telling reviewers to not discuss the game's installation and length of cutscenes.

Based on EGM's recent review scale changes and suspect scores (Assassin's Creed received like a 4.5 if I remember right), how do you think this will affect the reviewer/publisher relationship?

Many publishers love seeing that 9.5 or A+, so is this just EGM flexing their muscles or is the move geared toward improving their credibility?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

What happened to the previous plan to do the CAGcast earlier in the week and then a live show on Thursdays? Laziness or bad work schedules lately?

What do you guys think of reviewers trying to one-up each other when praising games like GTA IV and MGS4 by calling them pinacles of the industry, the best game of the decade, or even something that won't be surpassed for years?

If I remember correctly, Cheapy, you've said before that you didn't think there was any chance of an Asian version of Rock Band, but Harmonix announced today that Q Entertainment would be localizing the game for Japan. Are there any chances that the game will sell well, whether it keeps some of the songlist or goes for a J-rock songlist, or will it have similar troubles as most American games do in Japan?

What do you guys think has been the most controversial game of this generation so far, in either or both content and the hype around the game? Are there any contenders in the future?

I remember you making reference to some sort of "tagging" features in the upcoming CAG 2.0. I think it would be cool if a user could add a tag to a deal thread just to indicate that he or she "got in" on the deal. That way you could get a quick view of all the deals you've scored through CAG with a few simple mouse clicks. I figure you could also check any given deal thread and see a convenient list of all the CAGs who have had success with the deal so far. Maybe this could even be used to create a "YMMV Meter" of sorts. Any chance we will see this kind of functionality?

P.S. the term "CAG-Tags" would be pretty catchy.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
as per usual, great show.

Cheapy, on CAGcast #119 you mentioned that Japanese folks don't sit next to you on the trains because you're a foreigner. I just thought I'd mention a reason, because it might surprise you.

Studying English in Japanese schools is compulsory. Everyone is required almost six years worth of English language study. But, the same way a lot of folks in the states don't necessarily latch onto their foreign language studies, not everyone ends up six years worth of ability or vocabulary. So in public situations involving someone who looks as though they might speak English, Japanese folk will avoid them to avoid embarassment. It's not that they're afraid of you, it's that they're afraid your going to ask or say something in English.

Wombat, are you familiar with Magic: The Gathering? I'm not sure how interested you are in collecting wombat stuff but they made a card called "Rabid Wombat (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?id=159312)"?

Hahaha, that's an awesome idea. He'd be at least a 5/5!

Anyways, for my CagBag question;

If the remaining three installments of the Penny Arcade game is 1600 points that would make the overall game the same price as a full retail game. Do you think that they should have waited and relased the overall game on a disk rather than episodes on XBLA?

Thanks,

ObiBen

Guys,

Today, I noticed a thread about Lego Indiana Jones, a multi-platform game in the 360 forum. In the General Gaming forum descriptors, it states:

"Want to discuss multiplatform games, industry news, or video games in general? This is the place for you."

what's up with the inconsistency? When asked on that thread a CAG mentioned other multiplatform games that were also classified in this manner - GTAIV, RockBand, and COD4.

Also, where do you see console input technology going in the future? Our graphical output has improved considerably with the move to high-definition, but most of us are still using controllers based on the old dualshock controller (with the exception of the Wii) to input data.

--------

EDIT: Two CAGs left messages via Xbox Live; they claim that one of the moderators that creates threads is biased. While I don't believe this to be the case, I thought I'd pass this info on. I told them to speak directly to you.

Since I'm not sure if you guys saw this in the main CAGcast thread, I'm going to go ahead an copy paste it here:
Great show yet again guys. Never fails to amuse and inform.
Anyways, thanks for the Penny Arcade prize but I must sadly say that I had the horrible luck of buying the game literally two hours before the show went live. So if you guys could, re-raffle it or something along those lines so another CAG could enjoy it seeing as I already have it. Fortunately enough, I got three $20 Xbox live cards for $5 thanks to the site so it's all pretty gravy. Thanks!

Hey Cheapy and Wombat, I recently watched the new trailer for Resident Evil 5 and I was stunned at how good this game looks. I'm not a real fan of the previous games but this one has really caught my eye. I was wondering what you guys thought of the trailer. If you haven't seen it, it's available to download at the Playstation store.

In light of the Wii Fit. Do you think that the likes of Microsoft (especially as they make many accessories) will start to make more games that encourage thinks like fitness and studying etc.?

Hey CHEAPYD and WOMBAT. I'm a Canadian visiting New York for the first time EVER next month (starting July 2). I'm just wondering what are some essential things videogame and/or non-videogame related activities I must experience for my first visit to the big apple. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Your thankful Northen/Western bound listener,

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
Is the lifespan of the 360 going to be an issue? I don't mean the RRoD issue, but rather the current hardware cycle of the xbox brand. Around launch, I remember hearing that the 360 would last until 2010. Lately, I've been hearing talk of a seven year lifespan. Does this mean that the nextbox will be delayed or that microsoft is planning better support for a legacy device than we got with the original xbox? Basically, do you guys think the xbox 360 only has two more years to enjoy life?

Cheapy, Wombat; how exactly is in game messaging and in game invites, an issues with the PSN infrastructure. in game invites and messages, are an issue that the PS3 has... because there wasnt enough memory to run in the xmb along with games. That to me is not an infrastructure issue. Its part of the pS3's OS that runs on top of the game. other than the in game messages and invites which I'm purporting to be a system issue, is there any other issues that you've personally experienced in regards to getting online and playing games online via PSN ?

Some PS3 games do allow in game invites already - well just one.. Tekken DR Online. But looking at the situation, just like Namco decided to include this feature, in game invites is a feature that needs to be standardized with Sony, as it is on 360 games. With Sony, everything is up to the developer... the custom sound tracks, in game invites (resistance had it) all up to the developer to implement. When you guys talk about the infrastructure it gives the illusion that there's something wrong with the basic playing online portion of PSN. The problem with PSN is that its basic, and it doesn't have the advance feature that the 360 itself adds to life, custom soundtracks, in game messages and in game invites.

once sony has in game xmb... will PSN and XBL be on par with one another? [in terms of getting on line and playing games]

In light of the "He's not black" thread in which someone thought CheapyD, one of the Whitest people in the world, was a black man, has there ever been someone you surprising found out was an entirely different race other than what you pictured in your head after talking to them over Xbox Live or elsewhere? If so, who?

Hey Guys,

Can I ask you to go Pachter for a minute and do some money/analyst type thinking? I heard a while back that Microsoft had slashed the royalties that they're paying to devs who are publishing Live Arcade games. A little while later we see the Penny Arcade game coming out at a before unheard of price. Is there a relationship here?

Cheapy and Wombat I have a few points

1. I know you Cheapy love singstar but did you know that there's a new one out here in europe already. Knowing this would you think about getting a european corospondent?

2. How the hell can you Cheapy not watch the 2 greatest sitcoms to ever grace our unworthy eyes, scrubs and two and a half men. I am outraged.

3. Are you disapointed by the lack of funny games out there? Do you think funny movies should be made into games and what company should make them?

Hi CheapyD and Royal Wombat,
This question goes to Wombat. Wombat I go to my comic book shop, but I see too many kinds of x-men, spiderman and batman stories? I don't know which comic book is good to get.

hey cheapy and wombat,

do you think Microsoft's red ring of death problem with the 360 can help countries suffering from high unemployment rates? in that way, people get more jobs and 360s will be returned faster... right? or what?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

I was wondering if you two share a problem I myself have been experiencing for that last year or so: I often buy and get into games with the best intentions but never end up finishing them. I can see that this can be seen as a simple lack of interest in the game, but this seems to be chronic for me. I can even get a game that I find great like Okami, Resident Evil 4, Eternal Sonata, and every single Zelda game I've ever played -to name very few-; and I end up never finishing them.

So I find myself often looking into the length of single player games keeping in mind that anything over 20 hours may never get finished. My limit seems to be around 15 to 20 hours with any game before calling it quits. But it's strange that in some other games I can spend many hours in without a second thought (ex: 25+ hours in GTA4 so far, and 40+ hours in Skate.), is it just my personal preference? What are some games that you wished you had the will power to finish, to see how it feels to see the credit roll at the end?

Thank you Cheapy and Wombat. I'm not as active of a member in the CAG community as I would like, but I often find myself spending over 6 hours a week listening to new and old CAG casts. Love the show and wish the very best for you and all the CAGs out there.

(((Same Question, but paraphrased for weary eyes--- and eyes that don't want to read a 10 sentence question I spent over 20 minutes composing)))

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

No matter how good the game is, I almost never finish any single player games. While games like Zelda, Okami, Resident Evil 4, and Halo 3 may be great and all, but I never get to finish them because I often get drug into other games before getting to the end. This isn't a simple loss of attention, but a chronic problem for me, and I was wondering if this is a problem for you for some games. Do you avoid games that last too long, knowing that you'll probably never finish it? And are there any games you wish you could just jump to the ending and enjoy the credit roll, feeling a sense of accomplishment?

Thank you Cheapy and Wombat. I'm not as active of a member in the CAG community as I would like, but I often find myself spending over 6 hours a week listening to new and old CAG casts. Love the show and wish the very best for you and all the CAGs out there.

So what is the general attitude about Akihabara. I mean are people scared or is just the same shit different day type of attitude. The only really a story like this would get airtime here is because people would be surprised he wasn't using a gun.

Hey Cheapy & Wombat,

You guys seem to buy a fair amount of games on a weekly basis, but how many games do you find yourself finishing (as in seeing the ending) as compared to games that you are just finished with (as in sent to gather dust on a shelf or be traded in)?

I buy a ton of games and find myself struggling to finish many of them and maintain all other aspects of my life - job, wife, etc.

Hey Cheapy,

We know you are a big Howard Stern fan and it actually comes through on your own podcast delivery style. The way you will start a thought then stop suddenly and say "Look.....blah blah blah". Anyway, you mentioned recently that you wanted to take along your macbook and ipod on your US trip so that you could update your iPod with new episodes of Stern. How are you doing this? He is not on iTunes. I too would love to listen to new Howard Stern shows on my iPod!

Thanks!

Upon opening the latest EGM I thumbed through the pages to see the beginning of an article beginning with this: "So Japan's finally done it. They made a DS game for flamboyantly gay people." The game is titled Duel Love I believe, is there really a large demand for games like this in modern area's of Japan? A game like this wouldn't be looked fondly upon in America. [-(

Cheapy, and Wombat -

From the trailer I just saw from Saint's Row 2, it seems that they are aggressively trying to compete against Grand Theft Auto IV. By now, everyone is used to GTA IV, and their true complaints about the game are starting to come out - in terms of driving, shooting, etc. Also, people have seen all, and done all that GTA has to offer - except for the DLC that's coming for the 360.

Question - Is it better to purchase GTA IV's DLC content [which I believe may cost 40 dollars], or take that money and put it towards Saint's Row 2?

I was just wondering, now that you have a date (July 11) for the 3G iPhone in Japan, will you get it? Going to wait in line or is that just an American thing.

Hey cheapy, hey wombat. Cheapy thanks again for the long island meet up, please consider an e3 cag meetup this year if you are not to busy smoking out or getting business done. wombat im the dork who had you sign the ugo t-shirt :) It was very nice meeting you, ship and the other cags.

Anyway I got 2 questions.

1. Have either of you ever gotten so focused in a portable game that you forgot something you needed to do? If so what did you forget? For example I've missed my subway stop a few times on my way home from work from intense games of planet puzzle league or fifa soccer. Wombat commutes a lot and cheapy might do some as well. Just curious if something like this happens to you guys.

2. To the father and soon to be father of the show, would you ever let your children listen to the cagcast? If so how old would you like your kids to be before they got to listen to the cagcast? Im just curious with all the interesting stories you guys share about yourselves if you would want your children to know.
