Question 1: Non gaming and maybe not appropriate for cag-bag

As a CAG member now for a while I have seen a growing trend here on cag and perhaps it is also a statement on society or 'internet society' if you will. Recently, partcilarly relating to the original post about the $100 GC w/ purchase of PS3 at wal-mart, innocent members posting up things they know of, but without scans as proof, has incited alot of ridicule from other CAGs who focus on it and state that they are sure the poster is lying. Nowdays also proof is required for everything moreso than maybe 100 years ago with the increased contact between yourself and more individuals than in the past (due to easier transportation methods, growing metropolises, and of course IT such as the internet and cell phone). I am not here judging, because I also find myself very skeptical whenever I hear anything from someone I don't know that well.

I was wondering what your comment on this was and particularly for you Cheapy in Japan do you find that this is also a trend there? Additionally, do you think that, while this does protect us from the 'bad' people out there, that there are any negative side effects that could later show up in society?

With the new iPhone and its capabilities to play games, as shown by the near-gamecube graphics of super monkey ball, do you think that this will become a viable mobile platform more-so than previous cell phones?

Hey, Cheapy and Wombat! What is your take on the buzz surronding Spore? Is it deserving? Are either of you interested in it? Has Will Wright ever even made a game that any of us actually play? Its been like 2 years since the industry started babbling about it, and its still going strong.
Yes, I realize the sims is apparently hugely successful(seriously though, who is buying those games?) I'm not convinced that the people playing the Sims are the type of people following industry news, and reading gaming blogs, yet, it seems that Im always reading or hearing something new about it. I'm not sure if either of you bother checking out the editors' blogs at 1up, but Andrew Pfister (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8765045&publicUserId=4549029)mentioned earlier this week that EGM Live is being reworked and that former CAG Foreplay writer RockSolidAudio, aka Nick Suttner, is now co-host of the show. Do you plan to crush his new show with a relentless wave of attacks or offer the olive branch of peace, then plot his ultimate doom at some other point in time?

With the trophy system of achievements supposedly on the way soon for the PS3, do either of you plan to replay PS3 games or are you going to take a wait-and-see approach to see how Sony's approach works?

Also on the achievements topic, what are your thoughts on achievements that require multiple playthroughs of a game? Does it depend on the game or the requirement itself and is there a threshold for how many times you'd be willing to play through a game just for those last bits of points?

After watching Wombat's UGO video at the Rock Band event, I noticed that the guy from Harmonix mentioned something of a surprise that may be in store for E3, so what do you guys think it could be? The long-awaited Nirvana album? Something that's yet to be announced?

With the God of War track for Guitar Hero III now out, do you guys see theme songs being another possible avenue for DLC? Not just from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, but maybe even third party developers with upcoming games as a promotional tool or even bands like The Minibosses?

This is a question for Wombat, I'm really enjoying you Games Blog on UGO (I check it out every day) and I was just wondering how UGO feels about you putting new CAGCasts as a post and does that count toward the number of posts you need a day? Also, it seems like Rusty gets more hands on previews than you do, is there any specific reason to this?

I love the show and just listened to the newest installment today. I rarely find myself disagreeing with you guys, but when Wombat was dismissive about Guitar Hero 3 DLC not working with Guitar Hero Aerosmith, I had to post a big double you tee eff. It's true that GH2 songs won't play in GH3 and vice versa, but that precedent doesn't mean it's an okay thing. We're in an age of cross media interfaces and downloadable content for our games. It should be extremely easy for songs released and downloaded for one installment of Guitar Hero to play in the next incarnation, especially one with as little game structure changed as the Aerosmith release. Not allowing the previous DLC to be played is a conscious decision on the part of the developers, not a tech issue that couldn't be resolved. The future Penny Arcade episodes are making use of your save file from the first episode, for crying out loud. It's the same concept of accessing content on your hard drive, and Activision is just dropping the ball--or throwing it away, really.

The way I see it, there's no real excuse for the GH3 DLC not to be playable in Aerosmith. It's sitting there on your hard drive and is in the same format the Aerosmith game uses, so why can't it be read? This is not at all like Wombat's analogy with Mass Effect not being able to access Rock Band content. It's more like getting a new iPod and suddenly finding out that none of your MP3 library that you've been listening to on the previous model will play on this new one. If there's no significant change in gameplay or technology (like the addition or a new instrument or somesuch), the previous content that's sitting *right there* should be playable.

That said, I do agree with Cheapy that this is just another example of Activision not caring about their downloadable content.

With Alone in the dark coming out for all of the major consoles (except for the PS3 version which has been delayed) which version are you guys planning on buying? (if you even want to buy it)

The wii version has definately some graphical limitations compared to the xbox version, but seems more "in depth" with the wii controls being put to optimal use. The xbox version has better graphics. The PS3 version although being delayed will have "exclusive episodic content" so is that worth waiting for?

What do you guys think?

Couple of questions:

(1) with games like Bioshock last year, GTA IV, Mario Kart Wii, and MGS4 this year, is safe to say we are living in a world w/o the dredded summer drought? Have developers realized releasing AAA games outside the month of November can actually make sense?

(2) Wombat, please tell me you saw the talk about Vigilante 8: Arcade on IGN, esp. this part:
"The core game (which will cost 800 MS points) ships with eight vehicles. Four Vigilante cars: Mammoth truck (Convoy), Jefferson (John T), Piranha (Chassey Blue), GrooVan (Dave); and four Coyote cars: Manta (Sid Burn), Leprechaun (Boogie), Incarcerator bus (Molo), Stag camper pickup (Beezwax). All cars are newly redone, but the Piranha is an entirely new design, paying homage to V8's predecessor Interstate '76. We also just finalized our DLC pack (320 points), which will come with two brand new arenas and three additional cars: Strider buggy (Sheila), Towmaster tow truck (Houston), and never-before-seen Groundhog (Loki) – a post WWII, six-wheeled armored car!"

I am not sure how I feel about this, but my gut reaction was anger. But maybe not, b/c perhaps doing it this way, they are keeping the "core" game at a lower price point, and since that is all I likely care about, maybe that is a good thing??

Maybe its not such a big story over there, but apparently some guy paid $6000 for a 17 lb. black Densuke watermelon in Japan. Now that Metal Gear Solid 4 is out, do you think we are going to start to see differences in what can be done on the PS3 that might not be able to be done on the Xbox 360? So far it has been "360 can do X, but PS3 can't." Do you think that will start to reverse? I have played about 10 hours of the single player and I have to say the game is pretty amazing. IMO it certainly lives up to the hype and I think it's the best game I've played on any of the big 3 consoles so far. Sure there has been games like Uncharted, Ratchet, Warhawk and other exclusives, but I don't think they were enough for people to go "Holy shit! I need a PS3!" With MGS4 being the first huge PS3 exclusive that everyone is going crazy for , how do you think the landscape of the "war" between the two consoles will change?

I was thinking about the false promises made by the Big 3 and I rememebered a big one made by MS and I wanted your input. If you remember a few years ago Microsoft was promising support for iptv and a dvr on your 360. There were even some 360s who came back from repair with the iptv on their dash. We haven't heard anything on this in a long time. Do you think it is still in the works and is it something you're holding out for?

Second question/comment is in regards to your tipping discussion. I was thinking that in the US at least restaurant employees rely almost primarily on their tips. Most make minimum wage and use their tips as the primary source. Is this the same in Japan or are they less reliant on the tips? Can Japanese employees rely on a minimum wage if there even is one?

I was listening to some old Cagcasts (I was trying to get a feel for your past feelings about the MGS series and compare them to your feelings now) and I heard you guys laughing at the first 50 cent game and reporting that it sold a million copies [which is why we have 50 cent in the desert coming out]. Anyway, my question - obviously it was a celebrity that sold that game. What other celebrities would you like to see in a game and what celebrities do you think can take a sub par game and get it to sell a million copies? Or perhaps more rappers should be in 3rd persion action shooter games, they all gangsters so they should fit in a GTA rise from the bottom to the top type action/adventure game story.


In Cagcast 31 you guys referenced Peter Moore and Microsofts demoing the motion controller for the 360. At the time, they felt that such a controller wasn't very popular. But knowing that the 360 has had a motion controller for so long is it possible that perhaps the 360's motion controller may end up being superior to the Wii's motion controller? (and PS3 motion controller) If it is superior will the Wii perhaps loose some of their audience?

Regarding ads on the show, I highly suggest that you both take a listen to an episode of TWiT. Their handling of ads is masterful – they do the ads themselves instead of playing a recording, and instead of following a script, they wing it and turn it into almost its own mini-segment of the show. Sometimes I even look forward to the ad. It doesn't feel like an annoying interruption, and of course it's much more effective at pimping the sponsoring company's services than a more traditional ad would be, so companies tend to stick with them for extended periods of time and give them big time dollaz.

Now the question.

Considering both of your ages, I'm sort of surprised at how often you completely gloss over a bit of retro-style gaming news that I, as a child of the 8-bit era, find exciting. When it comes to downloadables, you both seem to devote much more time to the borderline casual games and multiplayer flavors-of-the-month that come out on Xbox Live Arcade than you do to classic rereleases and updates (Bionic Commando Rearmed, or the occasional Wii VC game that is actually well worth it, etc.) or newer games that are more classically styled, like Lost Winds (a new 2D platformer for a console in 2008!) or Ikaruga (classicist shmup, and a nice deal considering how much money it was commanding for GameCube). Have you both lost interest in the simpler gaming styles of the 8- and 16-bit eras? Do either of you ever break out an old and dusty console for a taste of some classic game that hasn't resurfaced on a download service or a game compilation?

Hey guys if full games came out on the xbox live market place and ps3 store would you buy more games? If MGS4 could be downloaded off the ps3 store would you have rather gotten it through there? I'm not sure it's a good idea for the show to have Game Stop as a sponsor on the show. This seems like more of a bias problem than if you were sponsored by Microsoft or something, since the big idea behind CAG is getting the best games deals.

In the ad you guys talked about Game Stop like it was a great place to trade in games, but the "deals" they give out are terrible. There are MUCH better ways to buy and sell used games, without having Game Stop as a middle man taking most of the difference.

I'm not against having you guys talk about sponsors in the middle of the show, but Game Spot is a really bad choice.

1-3.

I think that if you did you would like 4 a lot more. I hated MGS 2 and 3 because of all the cutscenes, but when I actually got my hands on 1 and played through the games in order of release, I liked the the series much more. Before you give up on 4's story you should try to find the first three games ( I think Konami released a pack of the first 3 for 30 dollars called Metal Gear Solid: essential collection) and play them.

Cheapy, I like your new take on paid DLC. You seem to be willing to judge it on its own merits, but also bring up the valid point that publishers are shooting themselves in the foot by flaunting DLC before launch. I'm with you -- it's usually just going to piss people off by announcing DLC before launch, but doesn't add any measurable good.

To Wombat's point: Does he really believe that *all* DLC is trimmed from what the core game would have been? Seriously? If so, Wombat's considerably more out of touch with development than I'd realized.

The best time to make this extra content is when the they already have the team assembled making the game. So yeah, it's generally planned and made at the same time as the game itself, because that's by far the cheapest and best time to make it. But it weren't for the fact they could charge extra for it, in most cases, that extra content wouldn't have been produced.

And here's a little known fact: Microsoft requires that you have at least some of your DLC ready to go before the product's launch, even if you don't put it up for sale for a while. They do this so they can do QA (i.e. testing) on how it integrates into your game. This is a requirement for by Microsoft for certification of the base game.

Again... Wombat, stop getting upset about when you think the content was made or making blind claims that DLC is always cut out of what would be the core game's content. Start judging the games themselves and the DLC based on whether they're a good deal for the dollar or not. I don't see how you can think that's not the best way to judge these things.

Has the CAGcast affected your site traffic? Podcasts seem to really effect the sites I go to. Before I listened to the 1up, Joystiq, and CAGcast podcasts, I would never go to 1up, visit Kotaku much more then Joystiq, and only go to Cheapassgamer.com during holidays. Ever since I started listening to the podcasts I visit Joystiq much more then Kotaku, go to 1up for the articles, not just podcasts, and frequent CAG weekly. I'm guessing because actually "knowing" the site contributers/owners makes visiting the site better.

Cheapy you've said a few times now that you are OK with companies reworking the concepts of their competitors to make them better. That's all well and good in hardware but have you ever seen this done in software? Nintendo released Wii Sports and in spite of the MANY clones none are better. Scurge:Hive was a clone of Metroid in many ways but it wasn't significantly better. Have you ever seen a game copy a Nintendo concept and actually improve on it?

I am a huge fan of Rock Band and the way they distribute their DLC, but I think it could be even cooler. I wish that when you bought a track by a band, you would get some sort of t-shirt or something with the band's logo on it packed in with the song, or at least have the option to buy band shirts with the money you have earned in the game. Since I know that Wombat is a huge fan of extra clothing and accessories for games and that he attended a Rock Band event and might have a connection, I was wondering if he could make this happen. Most of the time you guys just talk about shitting, but when Wombat said that someone who worked at McDonalds for $10 an hour in Japan *could* afford a $20 melon... they just had to work 2 hours... Two questions. First off, I was playing through Rumble Roses XX (for the gameplay of course), and I came to the realization the game has some of the most ridiculous achievements I have ever come across in a 360 game. A couple of weeks into the game, and I have 70 achievement points. And the achievements include buying all the outfits for each of the girls, which is just insane. What games do you consider to have hard to impossible achievements?

Secondly, for Wombat, what the hell is up with The Red Hulk? I have long been a reader of Hulk and She-Hulk through most of their iterations, yet I have no clue as to what this Red Hulk is all about. In regards to the "post your collection" feature: I am really hoping that an "export to excel" feature is added so I can download my list to my pda and see it as an excel file. As a gamer, when Sony releases their 2.40FW update... are you compelled or tempted to perhaps do more gaming online via PS3? [for free]. What do you think about the retail prices points of Xbox360 and PS3 games. From my understanding Xbox360 are still using DVDs and PS3 are using Blu-ray discs as their format. If that is the case why is it that Xbox360 games are the same price of PS3 games if the media is different? Shouldn't they be cheaper than PS3 games since blank Blu-ray discs are so bloody expensive when compared to blank DVDs?

Technically I would say yes, The Hulk is invincible while Juggernaut is not. Hulk once beat Superman to pulp.

What makes Hulk special? You forgot to add these bits Wombat. He's got the intelligence of Bruce Banner whereas "Juggs" is just dumb. Hulk once held up an entire planet (Marvel Secret Wars). And he's green.

Hey, great shows the last few weeks...getting funnier every week.

I recently bought myself a wii, well not just for me. But I am really disappointed with demos not being available for the Wii. With all of these "casual" games on the market I am sort of overwhelmed. I look on amazon and there are 15+ games very cheap, but I've heard nothing of them. And as far as I know or googled, there are no demo discs available. I download pretty much every demo for the ps3 and 360, except arcade titles, I'm downloading some demos on 360 that are on clearance right now, to see if I want to try and find them.

Is Nintendo doing anything about this? I know the storage is very limited, but how much memory could one minigame from Carnival Games take up. I have found myself not buying any games since I got it, except for Harry Potter for the gf, but I've never touched that since the day I bought it, and Wii sports' charm has run off after a few days.

As you most likely know Soulcaliber IV is coming out soon, I was just wondering on what your thought was on the console exclusive characters, Yoda on 360 and Darth on PS3. On the pending release of CAG 2.0, I did find it somewhat amusing that CAGs can limit access to their blogs in a number of ways but in the end this may hurt those blogs that are looking to be compensated based on traffic. My personal theory is that you stumbled across this mostly on dumb luck but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. 1) I know you don't like him, but the most recent Marvel character with strength to match the Hulk would be Sentry. He was the go-to guy during World War Hulk when the rest of the heroes were getting their asses kicked. Still, he's usually pretty useless because he's fairly insane. Here's a crossover question for you... Hulk vs The Authority: who would win and how?

2) A few weeks back you shrugged off Guitar Hero: Aerosmith's lack of reverse compatibility with Guitar Hero 3 DLC. Now that it's been announced that both Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2 will work with previously downloaded content, how do you feel? Personally, I think this is a big win for gamers as well as for the developers. Any future (and past) Rock Band downloadable songs won't be tied to any particular incarnation of Rock Band, meaning that Harmonix can still make money off DLC, even from people who don't pick up RB2, and the players will have an increasingly massive selection of songs without having to swap discs or buying a new retail product.

Just wrapped up #124. Great 'cast. I did have some feedback on Wombat's perceptions that PS3 players generally are uninterested in chatting online with other players during gameplay.

I can't speak for everyone of course, but I feel that the lack or reliable, quality chat is one of the biggest disappointments with my new PS3. Of course PS3ers don't want to use chat, the quality is almost always *crap*! I just got my PS3 with the release of MGS4 and immediately tried my BT headset with it and GTA IV. In both cases, the audio quality was horrible. On top of that set up was hard to do and game application was spotty. As bad as it was on Live with my oroiginal Xbox.

I'd maintain that if the audio quality was on par with what I've experienced on Apple iChat or Skype and the application of that chat in the game was well done (i.e. easy to chat with teammates) then in game chat would be widley used.

Cheapy and Wombat: On the last 'cast you talked about whether or not it is ethical for a small time review website to review games received off the net via Bittorrent or other ways. Cheapy thought it wasn't so bad and Wombat considered it stealing.

Well how about this analogy: Radio stations in the United States play music from cd's before the cd is even out from getting mp3 files off of file-sharing websites. The DJs will get these tracks early and even admit that they "did not get get them from the music industry" and will claim that they are doing it so that the fans can get a taste of the new album early and decide if they like it or not. This makes it seem that they are doing it for the fans when in reality they are really doing it to get an edge over other radio stations (similar to what happened to the small German video game website breaking the review of Alone in the Dark early off of pirated code). This seems to be perfectly fine with everyone and I can only recall one song getting pulled because the record label asked the radio station to stop playing the song with a cease and desist letter (which they obliged). I am with Cheapy I say let them review the game in whatever form they can get it in. If it is in most cases fine with the record industry then it should be fine for games. It is basically just free promotion for the game or cd. Like Cheapy always says "I don't care whether you talk good or bad about me as long as you talk about me".

With the recent release/news of new guitar hero/rockband games I got to thinking about how much a ripoff it all is. Why should I have to pay for music/songs I already own?

With games like audiosurf you can upload any song you own and use it with the game. Why doesn't rockband/guitar hero let you do this. (Obviously they want to make money selling you songs.) But shouldn't some game developer just make a clone of these games which allows you upload any song you want and the game extrapolates the parts. Granted this might be hard and expensive to program, but if it worked no one would buy these other games anymore. (No need for Aerosmith guitar hero when you can just stick in an aerosmith CD.)

On the flipside when you download songs for these games you can't acutally do anything with them besides use them to play the game. These games should at least let me rip the music I just paid for to a CD or to my MP3 player. After all, I paid for it.

I'm a huge fan of the show and I can't state this too many times, but Wombat kinda got to me in episode 125.

Wombat states that he is completely against obtaining illegal copies of games for early review purposes, even though the game would or could be purchased for in the future. In my mind it's logical to be against this, but Wombat constantly asks CheapyD what shows or movies he is currently watching and if he's found "Ways" of being able to watch them i.e. Heroes, Battlestar, etc. The Television shows and movies are purely for entertainment and Wombat doesn't seem to have a problem with this. I would like to get some insight as to why Wombat seems to be fine with obtaining TV shows and movies, but not video games?

Over a few shows you guys have discussed the delay for the PSN Store to make movies available for download. I wanted to give you my 2 cents and see what you guys think.

Among the three console companies Sony is presented with a unique problem with regards to making this content available on their platform.

Sony Computer Entertainment is part of the larger Sony machine, along with their media unit, Sony Pictures. Sony Pictures produces both television shows and films. This presents the two Sony business units with a conflict of interest. If Sony was working in a vaccum they would just make media from Sony Pictures available on the PS3, this would give their picture business unit a unique distribution platform without competition and make films and shows available on the PS3.

On the other hand, there is only so much content consumers want to buy from Sony Pictures, and so it is in the computer entertainment business unit's best interest to make as many shows available as possible. As you can see this presents Sony with a problem, especially when negotiating with other media companies for content who might correctly or incorrectly feel that Sony might be less inclined to promote their content over Sony Pictures.

It was for this exact same reason that I was surprised when Sony added Divx capabilities to the PS3 because, divx formats and their popularity with file shares encroaches directly upon Sony Pictures. You can be sure that if Microsoft did not move forward with divx implementation, it never would have seen the light of day on Sony. This show of flexibility on Sony's part makes me think that we may yet see movie downloads on the PS3 sooner rather than later.

As a note, I know that Sony offers some video content for the PSP for download, but as far as I know only in Japan (I have a Japanese PSP and do not get North American features and updates). I can't say if this content is solely from Sony Pictures or not because of my limited understanding of Japanese so you may be able to fill in the gaps Cheapy.

So as you can see this goes well beyond bluray, and this is why video distribution wasn't a problem for microsoft even before the end of the format war, even though they were heavily invested in to the HDDVD format.

With the selling points for consoles include library of games, graphics, and most importantly first-party exclusives, do you guys see companies like Microsoft and Sony securing these exclusives? As games get more expensive to produce, developers have to bring their product to the largest audience (i.e multi-platform). Will Microsoft and Sony push to secure more exclusives, get more of the "better" version of multi-platform games (Xbox GTA DLC), or do you see these companies losing their exclusives for monetary or interest issues (later Bungie)?

Just a quick question concerning the Rockband/Guitar Hero phenomenon...

With the hardware getting more tweaks (better drum kits and guitars), do you think there will come a point when these franchises say, "screw it, let's just make you use a real guitar."?

Obivously, it seems that people are looking for a more "real" experience when playing these games, so do you think they will develop some kind of setup where you play real instruments along with the gameplay? Will we see a generation of people learning to play musical instruments through mimicing master tracks through consoles?

I have a couple of quick questions for you guys. I just got a Wii and checked out their 'arcade' section (Wiiware is it?) I guess you could call it (the downloadable games ala XBOX Live arcade) and saw a bunch of old school games I am very familiar with. I'd like to know what you recommend on getting with my 2000 points card.

I know how they play on their original systems but hows the emulation for the old school games on the Wii?

I have a lengthy Nintendo-only question for the CAGBag, which I hope to hear on this week's show.

What is taking Nintendo so long to re-vamp their Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service? I see friend codes working on the DS, and they work to a certain extent. However, on the Wii, they just do not work the same way! Aren't there parental controls that could conceivably be put into place so that pedophiles couldn't friend gamers under a certain age, like with what Xbox Live attempted to do (emphasis on attempted)?

I see "child accounts" much like they do on Xbox Live, except for better migration when they hit the age milestone. Either way, all features would be accessible to everyone, much like what Xbox Live is doing in this day and age with the Silver and Gold accounts. Also, I see DLC and downloadable demos in Wii's immediate future, and this is something Nintendo clearly needs to address, but are they really going to? Can I have the opinions of both of you on this matter, especially with E3 next week?

I can understand your opinion on how Dyack is reacting to his public, and I agree with you. But it isnt like we haven't seen this before. Even though I (and probably me only) enjoyed Lair, didn't the President of Factor 5 lash out to critics who complained of the motion controls and told them "you just aren't playing the game the right way." I guess what my question is here, is that isn't predictable that higher ups at game studios are expected to act like idiots at times? What should we expect Dyack to do, go out there and say "Too Human sucks, don't buy it?"

I was just wondering how most people listen to the CAGcast? (for example: at the gym, on the way to work)

I've tried many things and my favorite so far is to listen to it while playing MLB 2K8.

You really don't need the announcers so turning the volume down doesn't change the game for me at all. In fact, it's inspired my team. The last two games I've played while listening to the CAGcast, I've won and it's put my team over .500.

Since we're all in the whole E3 excitement it got me wondering. Why do these companies need to be so "hush hush" about what they're doing? Take for example the 360 price cuts. Everyone's talking about it but it is still taken as a rumor till Microsoft gives their "official" word on it.

Do they feel if the public finds out about their secret plans everything will be screwed? In my personal experience I know I would have bought Rock Band for the Wii if Activision waited too long to announce Guitar Hero World Tour.

Last CAGCast, you mentioned the Xbox motion controller, and how it won't make the 360 the hot selling console that the Wii is. Cheapy mentioned the entire Wii marketing scheme, and how they're already know as 'the family console'.

My opinion - When Microsoft originally created the Xbox, there was a target audience for the system. the console was black and mountain dew green, it mainly had action / fps games, and heck, the consoles name was 'Xbox'. It was targeted with that gamer in mind. The hyper Halo-playing type of gamer who has an ADHD attention span, and doesn't really care about the dialog as long as he gets to kill a bunch of things. With this effort, Microsoft has achieved a great success.

However, now Microsoft sees what Nintendo has managed to market itself as, and it sees the insane profits that being the 'family console' can achieve. If you're looking for a '360' on who Microsoft would like to attract to their system, look no further. Sadly, I see the same green-eyed envy in Microsoft's eyes that they have towards Google.

If I was to make a prediction, it's that Microsoft *has* to be #1 at everything, and they'll blindly toss away their gains in an attempt to try to de-throne Nintendo. I know it sounds far fetched now, but I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft's next console didn't have the traditional 360 gamer in mind as the audience it wants to win over. Sure, there will be some work done on their behalf, but they won't be the primary target. If it works, then Microsoft gets what it wanted. If it doesn't work, then Microsoft has put its core audience in jeopardy because it couldn't accept being #2. Does anything here really think Microsoft will ever accept being #2 in any market?

First off, I'd like to congratulate you on the launch of CheapAssGamer v2.0. Nice work! The site looks really great and I'm excited to use the new site to its' fullest potential.

Second(ly?), I would like to ask your honest opinion about living in Tokyo. I recently took a week vacation there alone (21 year old Amerika-jin exploring the city) and had a blast. I spoke close to no Japanese before I got there, but after hanging around a few days, I picked up most of the important phrases. Now, I've lived and visited a lot of places in my young life. I've lived in Arizona most of my life, while spending 3 years off and on in Georgia for college. I've been to NYC a few times, SF and LA a whole bunch, London, France, etc. But I'm getting off track.

What I'm really trying to get at is, Tokyo has by far been my favorite destination in all of my travels. Now I realize my perspective is probably skewed, seeing as I was on vacation, and not really working in the city, as well as knowing very little of the language. However, from what I gathered, Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world, without the big city attitude that comes with NYC, London, etc. The Japanese are so polite (some might say overly so) that it makes being in the environment extremely rewarding, as I felt like I was part of a system, without actually being part of it. It's very difficult to put into words, but I'm sure you have some idea what I'm talking about.

I realize I probably sound like a Japanophile, but truth be told, I am not the type of kid who would travel to Japan to visit Akihabara and blow all his bank on anime, hentai, and video games. I'm just a somewhat average guy who really enjoyed Japan for what it was. Am I being delusional?

I regret not getting in contact with you sooner, so perhaps we could have met up and chilled a little bit.

So, finally, I'd like to ask you how you like living in Japan? I hear (from gaijinpot.com) that many people are disillusioned with Japan, but once they move there, they are unhappy. Is there much truth to this? Did you know much of the language before moving there with your wife? How is the language barrier now? Any tips on picking up the Japanese language faster? Finally, what part of Tokyo are you in? I was staying in Higashi-Koganei with family friends, and I was just curious what the cost of living is like as well.

I know it'll probably be years before I can remember even half of the Kanji that appears in the newspaper. But I'd like to give an honest attempt at exploring living in Japan. I intend on finishing my last year of my Graphic Design degree and studying Japanese privately with a tutor/program of some sort. Then, perhaps I will make an attempt at setting foot on Japanese soil for good.

I'm a bit mixed about this. One of my biggest complaints about the Wii is the lack of really good detection of the Wiimote. This solves the problem in a way, but would really only be useful if they started making a 2nd generation Wiimote and started shipping all Wiis with this new WiiMote. Otherwise, I just don't see developers taking advantage of the new hardware.
