Cheapy, Wombat, and Shipwreck,
I was wondering if any of you had heard of the whole ECA membership fiasco? Apparently, there is no option to cancel your account, cancel the auto renew membership, or remove your credit card information from the site after the Amazon discounts were taken down. Tons of people (including me) are trying to cancel their accounts but have no way to do this. The response from ECA contacts on the ECA forums says to send them feedback through a form on their site but nobody has gotten a ever response from this. After shooting them an email about the matter, I read in their policy email/phone is not allowed either. The only other option according to the contact, is to cancel the membership by sending a request through snail mail in order to prevent "lazy and finicky" members from canceling. I think this is a shoddy way of getting members to auto renew without their intent or knowing of the matter. However, what adds insult to injury is the fact that they lied about the reason taking down the cancel membership page and that the ECA is an association against this type of shit. They are now also deleting mass amounts of forums posts and topics about this issue without responding to any of the questions. Thoughts?

Any chance you can talk about Sony's firmware 'issues'/pending lawsuit (3.00, 3.01)? I know not everyone has been affected, but some out there definitely seem to have been.
Sony's Terms of Service say their firmware updates are provided as-is with no warranty, and they are not responsible for any issues that may come up with your system after their latest update is installed.
If Sony requires you to update your firmware to play online, or to simply play a single-player game (such as God of War Collection did to me), how can it not be held accountable if its firmware is proven to 'brick' systems?
I understand firmwares 3.00 and 3.01 have never been proven to be the cause of this mass system-wide failure, but as it stands now, those people whose systems are not able to read any media (which is what I effectively define as 'bricked'), are being asked by Sony to send their systems in for repair for 'only' $150.
To me, that's unacceptable. Luckily, I'm not one of those affected, but it seems they have no recourse, aside from buying a new system.
Just wanted to know if you guys had any thoughts on the situation.

Im currently in my sophmore year of college and still undecided on my major. I havent decided on what I want to be, but I know I want it to have something to do with video games. How good are you guys at evaluating your opinions before purchase?

More game reviewers constantly harp on how they don't like to talk abut games before fully reviewing them because they don't want to seem impartial. You guys don't have that problem. So when you guys see a game (not more-of-the-same sequels like Mass Effect* and such) and you watch the preview videos and trailers and such how accurate are your impressions when you actually get the game. Are you guys generally good at knowing what you like or are you constantly surprised at how you misjudged a game.


*Mass Effect 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Final Fantasy ##, these are games that are fundamentally the game as the original.

Games like Red Steel 2, Resident Evil 4, or Red Faction: Guerrilla are more vast departures from their predecessors

My Elite that I bought a year and a half ago just gave me the 1 red ring E73 error, which is not covered by the 3 year warranty (is covered by the 1 year warranty but too late for that :( )

What should I do? Pay MS the $100 to fix it, or try to force it to 3 red ring with the toothpick or towel trick, or just go buy a new jasper arcade?

Since both of you have experienced multiple hardware issues with the Xbox 360 I was wondering if either of you have run into this problem: Occasionally when my controller battery goes dead I connect the USB plug-in-play charger and much to my dismay the Xbox powers down and shows the 3 red lights. This is the only time my xbox ever shows the red rings and it powers back up right afterwards as if nothing happened.

Not sure if anyone asked this before, but I was wondering if we could get an iPod Touch/iPhone App/game forum on CAG. I realize there are a lot of websites that provide a forum for talking about games, but the CAG community has a good eye for the value proposition of, say, a $10 Xbox 360 game. I would love to hear what CAGs think about games on a platform that run $1 to $7, and if they have any good recommendations for a platform where its hard to weed out the crap.

One thing that keeps a podcast from getting stale or annoying is keeping it real and not getting carried away with the shtick. A lot of podcast hosts tend to get wrapped up in it when they realize fans are reacting to it, because hey, who doesn't want the positive attention? You seem to be able to be able to maintain objectivity and step back from all that and explain your positions very well while still having fun. Also, you try to be very sincere and are always open to constructive criticism. I enjoy your podcast so much that I've created an account just to say thanks. I appreciate the hour long format as well and I don't mind when you guys go over, it helps during the boring parts of the day!

This is an article of the "Best of 2009" stuff on Metacritic. Is it just me or is Metacritic sucking Sonys wang? Just on the first page of the article I see several things that just don't make any sense and are cleary pushing the fact that the PS3 is the shizz nizz. The median metascore for the PC is 72.5 and the PS3 is 72, but it says that the PS3 is number 1...?
Then the best reviewed games just seem fishy with the way they rank them(games with the same scores on different consoles always have the PS3 games ranked higher..?)
So what do you thinks going on there? Do you think they got pizznaid to post that? Or were they just trying to seem edgy by saying the PS3s the best thing since sliced bread, even after all of its criticisms over the past few years..? I'm not sure.

Also have you ever heard of Lead and Gold Gangs of the Wild West? Me neither. But I think that this will be the surprise hit of 2010. Its like Team Fortress 2 in the Wild West, what's not to like?

With they very cramped first three months of the year coming up, do you think there's anything in it for publishers to continue to announce more and more games for release between January and March? At a certain point, it gets too crowded like the fall a lot of these games already avoided, but it seems like they've just put themselves into the same situation just without that Modern Warfare 2 thing to make it look like a smart move as these games fight for the scraps of a post-holiday season. I looked at the release schedule and there's pretty much at least one game a week that's notable, which is very unusual even with the big starts we've seen for 2008 (Burnout Paradise and DMC4) and 2009 (Resident Evil 5, SFIV, and Killzone 2). Capcom's already opted out of this mess by pushing Dark Void, Lost Planet 2, and a few others, so they're at least recognizing the potentially bad situation.

The game industry currently operates very similarly to the movie industry in the way that it tries to maximize certain times of the year for its big releases. Movies release blockbusters in the summer, family movies in the holiday season, and riskier films in between. Gaming is similar with how the holidays and Spring are important.

What I want to know is if you guys think gaming has evolved far enough as an entertainment medium that they can buck the trend of calendar-based releases. Don't people want year round entertainment? Shouldn't a good game sell regardless of launch window? Obviously the holidays will always be heavy in big hitters, but wouldn't a year round flow of games be easier for gamers to handle? After all, movies last 90 minutes and you're done, games take many hours and it would be nice not to have them all pile into 3-4 months out of the year.

After Shipwreck's comments regarding the extreme difficulty of Demon's Souls, I immediately transferred the title from my regular wishlist to my Target clearance wishlist. If a game is too hard even for the almighty Shipwreck, I can't imagine that I could possibly enjoy it, especially at full price! As an old school gamer, I do appreciate a good challenge, however, in this generation of unlimited saves and continues, I simply don't have the patience to play through a level 200 times. Much to my surprise, I was recently perusing Gamespot (something I haven't done much since Gertsmangate transpired) and realized that they awarded it game of the year for 2009! To be fair you were talking about different games. CheapyD was talking about the Rewind feature in Forza and Wombat was talking about Detective Mode in Batman:Arkham Asylum*

Do you guys maintain your stated stances in the other game? How about other games entirely. For instance Mega Man 2 has one of the most powerful weapons in all of video gaming (Metal Blade**). When you're faced with something like that are you going to not use it or do you wish the developer had just not put it in the first place?

Hey CheapyD it's Ryan the dude doing the 100 Push-Ups App, I just wanted to ask if you have started it back up again? It seems to be working for me.

Also thought i'd give you a heads up on how it's going. I did get 200 Sit-Ups as well and i'm not doing both Apps and for $4 in total I think it's a friggen steal. My initial amount was 14 consecutive push ups and i'm now on Week 4, and can do 30 consecutive push ups, I can actually see improvement in my arms too. Definitely going great.

Hey Cheapy, I was wondering if you could get any answers out of EA about their server issues with the new Army Of Two:TFD. The co-op and the multi-player are damn near unplayable due to lag and server stability issues. The first game ran smoth for the first few weeks and then about a month or so later a patch was applied for the multi-player and my friend and I had to finish our Pro run (hardest diff) seperatly because of the same server issues. I know realisticaly you may not be able to do much but I figured since you are the head of such a large community that you would have a better chance of getting an answer than I would. Love the show and I have been listening for a very long time now. In fact I have listened to all but about 20 shows! take care and God bless.

Speaking of good podcasts, you guys should do a bit more plugging for 2 Chimps on a Davenport. It's a fantastic podcast made by those guys at NextGenWalkthroughs, and it's how I found out about the CAGCast. I've been listening to the show for about a year now. I love it. You guys are great. But I hadn't felt compelled to register with CAG until Shipwreck publicly took issue with the tastes of one Jeff Gerstmann.

I know there isn't any real beef between you guys and Giant Bomb, but I thought it'd be fun to give Shipwreck a little dose of reality all the same, so here it is:

Jeff Gestmann and Shipwreck have both written reviews for nine different games. In seven of them they gave the game the exact same score. Shipwreck uses a five word scale and Giant Bomb uses a five star scale, so the scores are completely analogous.

The two games they disagreed on were G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (no big surprise) which Shipwreck scored as "Poor" or 2 stars in G.B. terms (Gerstmann gave it only one star) and BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger which Shipwreck scored as "Outstanding" (5 stars) Gestmann thought it only deserved 3 stars (Fair).

I contend that no man who gets excited about getting a boatload of G.I. Joe crap for Christmas is qualified to make value judgments on another man's taste.

I have a question that wombat can ask the producers of Mass effect. When is the PS3 version going to come out since they are 3rd party and MS is no longer the publisher. Is there any game that completely changed your mind about a certain gaming genre?

For instance, I wouldn't go anywhere near a FPS many years ago. I associated them with PC nerds hunched over their keyboards. I eventually tried Red Faction on PS2 and loved it. I was also never really into racing games until I played Burnout Revenge on 360. Now, not only do I love arcade racers like Burnout but I love sim racers like Forza and Gran Turismo as well.

I have been meaning to send you a question for the cagcast. I loved your "Shitbox" term from last week. I was crackin up at that one because I too am sick of the motion control hype. What is up with all this attention on motion controls and no mention of improving regular controllers. I have recently bought an off brand PS3 controller that looks like the xbox controller, and i love it. Now I play PS3 games with the comfort of the xbox controller design. However, I cant help but think of improvements that can still be made. I think it would be cool if they added a paddle for instance. games like space invaders extreme or a "new tempest type game" would play so much better using a paddle. Driving games or even scrolling menus would seem a natural fit. I was also thinking about a little track ball for more accurate pointing or to just play centipede. This is something I've been wanting to get you guys to weigh in on for a couple months. All three consoles had price drops during the fall, yet (as far as I recall) none of them did any sort of ad campaign focusing on budget games. Is it just me, or did they miss a very nice opportunity to throw down a couple more high profile games into their budget lines, and advertise them together? I'm pretty sure when someone waits 2-3 years to buy your console, they're more in a budget mindset.

And also, do you think we'll even see a Player's Choice line from Nintendo this gen? You'd think they'd want as many of their titles to stay on store shelves as possible. I know a few of their games continued to sell with ridiculous legs, but some of them aren't even stocked in most stores now, and I really doubt stores are going to start stocking titles like Twilight Princess again while they're still wanting $50 for it.

Hey, in regards to last weeks show you wanted to know some questions to ask BioWare developers, right? I have a few:
1) How about some sort of incentive to play the same game or other BioWare games on multiple platforms? My 360 went bust and I don't have the money to buy another one yet so I've been using my PS3. What if there's some sort of online account (sure, maybe the EA account) that'll keep track of achievements on the 360, PC, and PS3 and can carry over effects on other BioWare games regardless of what platform you play on. I'd sure as hell buy more of the same games on multiple platforms if I felt like my character, stats, items, etc. could carry over no matter what system I'm buying it for.
2) How about some cameos or secret characters if you've played other BioWare games? It'd be pretty badass to see HK47 as a secret character unlockable in Mass Effect 2 or 3 if you have a copy of Knights of the Old Republic registered on their site.

I'll answer that for you. No. Battlefield is a series I love, every version they've ever released of it. But MW2 is just too big for Bad Company 2 to take a huge chunk of the market from it. Even though MW2 is a broken mess of a MP game, the public appeal behind it is too large.

As a married gamer, I was interested to hear Shima's and Mrs. Wombat's responses to Mass Effect 2.

My wife was very busy deciding which of the characters it would be OK for me to "sex up" in the game. She decided that Miranda was OK, but that Jack was for sure a no-no. I'm married, have kids, am a lawyer for a large US lawfirm, etc. and a relative asked me the other day if there was a time that I could see myself not gaming.

Haven't posted a cagbag question in a while but I think this one merits some attention.

I primarily stay in the deals forum. As I'm sure you know, the Gamestop Trade in value/promotion thread is one of the most frequently viewed threads in that forum - I believe it has more views than the amazon promotion thread. It's run by jp0213 who does an amazing job slaving over that thread and constantly updating the trade in values in the thread AND the cag database. A few days ago, a brief discussion arose in the thread about jp0213 being a moderator, to which jp0213 humbly responded that he just wished he had mod powers over that thread once in a while (obviously one of the most frequented threads is going to have a ton of nonsense). Anyway, I really felt obligated to ask the silly question "What's this guy gotta do to become a mod?!" This is totally unsolicited, I just really feel that strongly about this and I think other CAGs would too. Thanks for considering this - even if it's not read on the show.

I was thinking about this earlier this evening and something came to me, others have also asked this question I am sure. Sony didn't really seem to do anything to fix this issue with their systems. They just waited until the system auto corrected itself, the error could still be on the older playstation 3 models and could pop up again at another date and time. So does Sony have a plan to fix this via firmware update or are those of us who supported the playstation 3 when it first came out left to wonder when this will pop up again.

What do you guys think about the whole situation, is this proof of a Sony kill switch? Did someone just fuck up really really bad when they where programing something for the system? Will Sony try and make amends to its user base in some capacity for this outage?

Do you feel Microsoft have done what they set out to do all those years ago, and take a large hold of the gaming market away from sony. With quite a hefty lead in console sales do you feel sony will ever close that gap with exclusives like GOD OF WAR 3 and Heavy Rain? I was curious if you've seen some of the bizarre things he describes (corporate people getting hammered and screaming in the streets, business employees paid to bark out incoherent nonsense on megaphones, etc.) and if you can elaborate on any of the "you wouldn't understand, it's a Japanese thing" mentality that he describes since you're married to a native.

Overall I found the article very interesting, but it painted the Japanese culture in a very strange light. How accurate is his portrayal of Tokyo and Japanese culture?

I was wondering why any third party developer would want to publish their game exclusively; to either Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. Isn't it pretty obvious that the developer would receive more money by selling near equal number of units on all platforms? For example, say MAG was multiplatform and sold 300,000 units on Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Isn't more revenue brought in by 300,000 times three, than 500,000 times one?
My question is: does Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo, when buying the contract to make a game exclusive, really pay more than the possible revenue of the game if it were not restricted to one console?

Regarding the BM Stick and Project Shitbox ; In general I have to agree with you guys that these devices are doomed to fail. Looking back at all the gaming addons I don't think any extra peripheral has ever succeeded.

Deep down though, part of me is a little excited about the possibilities these peripherals could give, "IF" they truly support this and game developers get on board. Perhaps a game like Heavy Rain, (only better dialouge), or a RTS game could benefit from an controller interface like these......I'm sure there are better ideas out there, but there must be some NON Wiicrap style game possibilities.

Of course....I'm not holding my breath, and will wait to see if any decent game comes out making the $100+ purchase worth it.

The CAGcast, much like most video game podcasts, uses Skype. On other podcasts (like Joystiq), there is a constant danger of dropped calls. This usually leads to 30 seconds or so of mad fumbling trying to get people back on. It makes "great" radio.

I have never heard this kind of unprofessional-ism from the CAGcast. Do you have these kinds of drops and edit them out? Or do you have some awesome trick in Skype to keep it from happening? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Hey guys i have another question for you this week.
While reading reviews and listening to podcasts i constantly find that reviewers and general players curse games for having a story that is nothing short of laughable. Does that need to change? Is that what we want from games? Oscar winning drama story's? Don't get me wrong i love a good story when it is done right (mass effect, heavy rain). But then i usualy find when a game puts so much effort into a story, it misses the mark on gameplay (heavy rain). I feel there needs to be a perfect mixture. When i watch a film i want to big sucked into the story and totally forget about everything for 2 hours. But when i play a game, i want to be blown away by amazing gameplay, not the story. Yes i look forward to see what happens to Kratos, and yes i wanted to find out if John Shepard lived. But those where all secondary feelings, i was more interested in ripping someones head of and upgrading my ship than i was in one mans iternal struggle with the gods.
What are your guys opinions on this.

I have a suggestion for the show. Your going to hate this but I like the idea so I thought I'd throw it out there. I assume you do the live shows because A) they're easier but also B) to get the CAG community involved. Although I love the show and would listen to any one you put out, the live shows are my least favorite. So here's my idea....instead of doing a live show, you should pick a community member and interview them for the show. To make it easy, you could limit it to 10 or 15 minutes. Every interview could be same 5 or 6 questions and maybe leave time at the end for the person to talk about whatever they want or ask you a question. You could just tack it onto the end of the show. I personally would love to hear from the CAG community. I'm curious who they are, where they work, what they do, where they get their deals. Sometimes I feel like the oldest guy following Cheap Ass Gamer but I'm probably just like everyone else listening. I'd probably be surprised.

I think you should try it. It's probably more work though so make Dinghy Accident I mean Shipwreck do it.

The jumping mechanic is incredibly broken. Jumping has been basically perfected as far back as Super Mario Bros, how can a current gen game be considered AAA if it completely fails at something so basic?

Additionally did you guys notice the wonkyness of the camera? I often found myself with the camera looking down a empty hallway while Kratos was fighting around the corner. Just wondering how you guys complete your games.

I typically focus on one game at a time. It goes in the system and doesn't come out until I've either beaten it or given up.

There are rare exceptions - online shooters and racing games come to mind. But overall OCD makes me play one game at a time.

DC is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, and Marvel wants to celebrate theirs in a couple of years. DC has been publishing comics consistently since 1935 (as National Allied Publications but changed their name to DC in 1937), but Marvel comics has only been around since 1961 starting with the Fantastic Four. I understand Timely Comics published a comic called "Marvel Comics" and "Captain America". Do you think Marvel deserves to celebrate a golden age of comics?

Given the news Gamsutra broke this afternoon that Ubisoft's Wii exclusive Lets Dance has sold over 2 million units, what does this mean?

Ubisoft had recently said they were moving away from the Nintendo platforms as titles failed to perform.

Can Nintendo legitimately claim that the Wii is a viable console for third party publishers?

Will other publishers see this as a lucky hit with a title that really isn't a game, further cementing the idea that the Wii is a child's toy and not a serious game machine?

Hey Wombat. It was exciting to here that you're a Sammy too. I was wondering if you could give a shout out to Drexel students to come check out Sigma Alpha Mu since we are doing our rush events right now. If even one additional person shows up because of the Cagcast, it would be a resounding success. and tell them to mention the cagcast when they go.

I am working through the back catalog of CAGCast, I am at #53 :) I like to hear podcasts while I work... And Cagcast is one of the 2 podcasts I love and hear all the time. I have a lot of hours of old material left... I enjoy hearing your prophecies and see whether the future turned our as you guessed, and most times, it did.

Also, while I respect and like Shipwreck, I personally prefer the 2 player version of the CAGCast. It's nothing against Shipwreck, really. Somehow, he brings seriousness to the podcast, and focus, and I can't say that I personally prefer the show that way. I like Cheapy's rants, and Wombat's weird voices, and their chemistry. If you jump from older episodes (like 30 in a row) to the new episodes, it's quite clear (to me that is). Again, I say this with all possible respect for Shipwreck.

I am listening to Cagcast #194. Glad to hear that adventures cross your desks a little more than usual. That's one of the most interesting differences concerning perspective. Where I live, in Germany, adventures exist, and do quite well, reaching the top charts position. I am happy to say that I work for a big adventure right now as composer and sfx designer. That studio got the best studio of 2009 developer award here in Germany, their last game was Top 5, so it's not dead at all here.

Secret files: Tunguska which Wombat mentioned is one of the best-selling adventures in the last years in Germany. It's a very good game I think. Realistic thriller-esque with some humor.

And, you said a Sherlock Holmes adventure would be nice: Did you know, there are half a dozen Sherlock Holmes games out for the PC, the latest one even for Xbox http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-GB/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802464507d3/ Those games are far from perfect but quite stylish, I recommend The Awakened, that's Sherlock Holmes vs. Cthulhu!

AND best of all, a few classic games are out for your Iphone: Beneath a Steel Sky, Monkey Island 1, Simon the Sorcerer, Broken Sword...

Also, just another quick note, people still play PC games here. And Germany's among the top 5 of global games markets. Yes, everyone is angry here about that PC - Assassins Creed disaster, still I had to frown when Wombat asked a few shows back why the hell they made a PC version at all.

So, I sometimes sigh when I hear international podcasts talk about PC games as unrelevant and adventures as dead. Glad that the last part seems to change a little at least, with Monkey Island on the Wii and all.

Sorry, not a question really, but maybe this qualifies as input of SOME sort. That's all I got. Cheers, keep up the good work.

I was board this weekend and was checking out the first few episodes from when you were still in New York. I thought it was pretty cool to hear all six minutes of the first episode. I figured it would be bad but it was actually pretty good. It was pretty cool to look back and see where we have come from in the gaming world. For example, you where a big fan of the Revolution (Wii) controller and where very meh on the 360 at least at launch. Have you every looked back at all the campaign promises and hype from the pre-launch days and seen which ones were delivered on and which we are still waiting on? What are you still waiting on if anything?
