Here's my question:
Would you like to sign up for our 12 month gamestop membership? It saves you money when you buy used games. 10% off of used games. So do you want to sign up? Are you sure I mean it would save you a lot of money. You must not like saving money *snickers*. Did you want to reserve anything today? Are you sure you don't want to reserve anything today? How about the new madden 07, I mean you MUST like madden. YOU DON'T LIKE MADDEN?? Ok...well do you want to reserve kingdom hearts 2? It's only 5 dollars down. You can change it to a different game if you decide you don't want kingdom hearts. You're really sure you don't want to reserve anything?? I did tell you it's ONLY 5 dollars to reserve a game didn't I? Alright well did you decide whether or not you wanted to subscribe to Game Informer? Normally it would cost you 15 dollars but with the money you save today it would only be....14.88. So did you want that subscription? No??? Well...Ok....So you do want to reserve Zelda right? Everyone likes Zelda....Did you just tell me to go fuck myself??

Overall 360 had a better launch then any recent system. I have played Perfect Dark, Kameo, Condemed, and DOA 4 at a friends house/ at a store and there better then anything on any other system at launch. Even Halo. I mean for a pc FPS fan Halo was fun don't get me wrong, but not the be all and all some make it out to be.

What is the cost of living in Japan like vs. the cost of living in the U.S.?
Do you have any insider friends in the game development industry who would be willing to make a game about a large, bald white guy who runs a website and moves to Japan only to end up in all sorts of misadventures?

Regarding the future of the PSP-
I get the feeling that it needs strong games, now. You could argue that with the rise of video-playback capable mp3 devices (video Ipod, Zen vision:m, etc), the PSP's video/music functionality will no longer draw in potential buyers; why pay $250 for a system plus around $70-$100 for one gig of memory when a 30 gig Ipod video costs $300?
With this in mind, is 2006 the year for the PSP to rise to its potential as the most technologically impressive handheld GAMING system currently out, or do you guys feel that it will fade into obscurity behind the DS's (thus far) stronger software lineup?

How about the comments from Japan store owners and a few sites around saying that the DS lite looks like an Ipod and at least as cool as the PSP?
Overall all I know is all I do is load Tivo shows on the PSP and watch them on the go. And on the ds I play puzzle, Mario Kart, and Castlevania all the time. And as soon as I beat AW 2 with all S rank i'll pop open Duel strike and play that all the time.
If some of the PSP rpg ports have new content or retail for a reasonable price 20-30 dollars then those will be picked up. Those games are so much nicer on the go.
CHEAPYD and WOMBAT That new $50 battery extender for psp that adds 6 or so more hours of battery life on psp mean that a PSP re-release is coming some time this year. Or at least a new battery that you can buy seperatly that doesn't suck.

Why wombat? why not guinea pig? Do you look like a wombat? (chubby and short, and... lazy?)
To extend this questions - have you ever seen a wombat in person? They don't seem to be either "wombs" (huh?) or "bats." Sorta like pigs but more boxy. And furry. So maybe not like pigs at all. Nevermind.

For gamers arriving late to the scene, which current-gen system (Cube, PS2, or XBox) would you most recommend and why?
Nice question! That would be a very good topic to discuss considering how cheap most of the games are for all three of those systems.
Once you start playing 360, PS3, Revolution, you won't want to go back to Xbox, PS2, & GC games. I say enjoy the current games now at bargain prices until that "monster, buy the system NOW" game comes along. I'll be playing mine for at least another year. I've kept up a list of games to still play over the past few years and I'm still almost 80 deep to go in this gen.

With the Nintendo's next system looking to change the way we game, in your expert opinions: over the years of home gaming, what controller change (or revolution if you will - har, har) has had the biggest impact on gaming?
In my un-expert opinion, I would say Nintendo using the original D-pad, pretty much every system since has had one, even the Revolution controller is going to keep the thing...

Made out of Solid Gold. It's own HDTV. Or more realistically the ability to play movies on hdtv's with only the component cables that HDDVD and Blueray have just cut according to news reports. Both have just cut the already small HD market into smaller increments through that decison.

What effect, if any, will the rumored (EDIT:now official) delay of the PS3 have on the next-gen gaming market? Specifically, do you believe it will give Nintendo an upper hand? Though Iwata-san is currently hot to have the Revolution on store shelves this November, would such a delay give Nintendo enough wiggle-room to be more leisurely with the console’s launch?

It's been nearly 4 months since the XBox 360 launch. Now that the initial hype has died down somewhat, and XBox 360 systems are becoming easier to find, what are your impressions of the launch? Success, failure, or somewhere in between? Also, do you think Microsoft has any significant advantages of being first to market?

Being a CAGer myself, I didn't purchase my xbox until Jan '05(waited for the right price/bundle). We had some thunderstorms roll thru and I believe this has caused me to now have the infamous "error 21".
Microsoft will fix it for $79.90. This goes against every CAGing bone in my body to pay over half of the original purchase price to fix something I bought only 14 months ago(my EB extended warranty expired 6 weeks ago).
With that being said, the question is, should I suck it up an pay M$ the $80.00 because there wont be much more support for the black box ? OR should I just get rid of the darn thing and put the proceeds to whichever next gen console I decide to go with (being a Dad, we will most likely be getting a Revo in our house @ launch)?

Cheapy AND Wombat:
With the Revolution poised to shake things up in this next generation and potentially reinstate Nintendo as a dominant player, how do you feel the gaming community will respond to Nintendo's "classic" game puchasing service?
Do you believe that the "right price" will determine whether people download these games or not? Do you think Nintendo's efforts will be crippled by emulation? And what about control.. what are your thoughts about how "shells" will perform with these classic games?

Wombat - you have said on several CAGcasts that you think that gaming needs a reviewer that the people can trust/take something away from their review just b/c of the person writing the review - we need a game review star so to speak, like a Roger Ebert of video games.
So my question then is this: have you considered being that person? Seriously, you seem to have the knowledge base, sense of humor and passion for video games that would allow you to take on such a role, but other than your short reviews on CAGcast we get little else from you review wise.
I mean, we may not all agree w/your reviews, but I would say that your general positions are pretty well known (i.e. you are not a huge RPG guy) and therefore I think people could look to you or even Cheapy as that voice, seeing as how you both kinda already have a built in fan base so to speak.

Another Q about reviews generally...
Why do mags/sites, etc have each console or what not as a seperate section? for example IGN has the GC site, the PS2 site, etc and the same people only review games for those sections. The only time we get a good cross reference among systems as to games is come game of the year time.
With many (if not all) of us being multi-console owners why not compare games across consoles more often? For example I am in the market for a new hand held game and am considering SF: Dark Mirror or MP:Hunters, based on just their # score it would seem like SF: Dark Mirror is better...but that is not necessarily the truth b/c the psp site guy only reviews psp games, for all I know he thinks MP:Hunters is the better game.
There has to be a better way! Any suggestions?
Sorry this is kinda a long question, if I am lucky enough to get an answer feel free to shorten as needed.
Thanks.

What happened to some of CAGcast's older features, such as the CAG Wishlist? You should resurrect it and have a CAG Wishlist devoted to your hopes for E3.
Wombat, you mentioned in the last CAGcast that you'd love to become the Roger Ebert of videogames. However, how would you go about reviewing a game that you normally wouldn't play (Metal Gear Solid 3, for example) that most of the industry declares a hit? Also, wouldn't you ever get tired of playing and reviewing the crappy five-dollar bargain bin games? (Not that I wouldn't love to hear them...I'm sure we'd all get a kick out of your review for something like Drake of the 99 Dragons.)

2) How about starting a line of CAGCrap to sell on the site? We need some CheapyD mousepads, Wombat coffee mugs, and some "I sold stolen merchandise on CAG and all I got was this orange jumpsuit" TMACDaddy T-shirts!
3) Will CAG be at E3 this year?

Cheapy and Defender tried that several years ago with CAG T-Shirts but I don't think sales were as brisk as they had hoped. I don't think they even recoop'd their expenses. I bought two but they are starting to look a little ragged not to mention feel a little snug around the midsection. :)

I don't know if you've been asked this before (I've slept since then), but what are your thoughts on the whole "retro gaming" craze that teenagers who probably know nothing about older games are eating up?

I'm not sure if this was asked, but everyone else chimed in with their opinions.
How much do you think the Nintendo Revolution will cost? The PS3?
Also, this next question is a bit dated. Before the DS blew up and sold 1,000,000,000 units, I was beginning to wonder if Nintendo was going to go the way of Sega. Perhaps it is still possible if the Revolution flops, but I don't see that happening.
Do you think Nintendo would be better off making games for Sony and Microsoft systems and the PC, as opposed to staying in the console race? From a gamer's view, instead of having to buy a Gamecube, all of us could have played Mario, Zelda, etc., on our PS2's, Xbox's, PCs, etc.

My fiance' is not a gamer. She'll play a small amount of Harvest Moon, Mario, and other "cutesy" games, but only for a short amount of time. She also gets huffy when I spend too much time on a game such as Kingdom Hearts 2 or Prince of Persia. What can I do to get her more interested in gaming? Is there any hope that I can continue playing games after I'm married?
(On a side note...since those Japanese XBox 360s are so cheap over there, how about sending me one as a wedding gift? ;) I'm tying the knot on the 22nd. Besides, it's not like I didn't invent the CAGbag or anything. ;) )

With all the blame video games are getting from politicians and the media, when do you think people might actually realize its the parents' responsibility to understand the rating system and be responsible for their childrend? Also how many people do you think actually live out video game experiences in the real world? Hey guys, I look forward to listening to your show every week. Blue Ray DVD and HD-DVD are about to take part in a media war. I feel cd/dvd technology is starting to be yesterdays news. I know the two new formats offer more memory for better movies and games, but I feel portable memory units like MP3/video players and flash drives are the way of the future. Just look at the popularity of the iPod and the convenience of OnDemand in the cable market, no cd required. Plus, how do you play a BD that is so compressed that a small scratch on the disc will make it useless? The price of the new BDs is another factor. Why would people want to rebuy their whole movie collection all over again on BD? What are your thoughts?
Keep up the good work.

All right gentlemen, a few quick questions while "Mrs. Bazooka" is out...
#1. Mr. Cheapy: Maybe I missed the discussion on this (if there was one) but from your perception over there...why would you say that the Japanese culture isn't really diggin' the XBOX360 too much? Do they hate American companies "invading their market?" Too much hometown love for Sony & Nintendo? Not enough cute, big-eyed, crazy-haired RPGS on the console? ENLIGHTEN US :)
#2. Mr. Wombatty: If you don't mind me asking...what IS your "dayjob?" It has come up in the last few 'casts, & now I'm just curious.
#3. Both Of You: I was having a discussion the other day about USED GAMES...& basically, they accounted for a decent sized chunk (low billion I believe) of video game sales. A lot of the publishers have been pondering on how to either curb this loss in potential revenue, or get a piece of this which both are going to be tough to do...any ideas? I personally can't justify buying used games unless it is something that I'll have a tough time finding new. Why buy a game for like $5-$10 less that looks like it has been "Zelda's Chewtoy" when I can buy it brand-spanking new? Case in Point...the EBGAMES/GAMESTOP news you read last time about how they "may not come with a case or manual." Granted you are just PLAYING the game...but at least I would like it complete. Maybe I'm just being anal about the condition of my games here...
(Semi-Rant Ended)
THANX for the time guys...ADIOS!

When Do you think we will start seeing AO rated games in the market place?
Im in no way wanting to play pr0n games on my ps3/360 but looking for real games created for M/AO audiences.
And What is the real difference between "M" And "AO" ?
My opinion is they should be rated like movies are rated and do away with the E,T,M,AO categories. and put in G,PG,PG13,R etc etc.
I think this would help everyone including clueless parents on wether or not to buy a game for little Jimmy or not.
This would also hopefuly put an end to groups who find violence/sex/etc in "videogames" go away and think of videogames just like movies. Made for all audiences and not just little teenage kids.
P.s Having a WAR game like medal of honor have no blood in it is stupid. but its rated T for TEEN.and teens cant be allowed to see blood in a WAR game. although we will let them shoot and kill guys.

Kind of a "what-if" scenario here... if online digital delivery were to replace physical storefronts in the future, do you think a lot of titles could end up lost in limbo, with no way to ever purchase them again? Nah, I can't accept that he chose wombat because he is hairy as there are many other animals that are equally hairy or even more so. I was leaning towards the answer being that the wombat's naturally range is pretty limited, hence his problems with the wide open spaces of oblivion. :)

I actually have two questions.
Are xbox360 games being delayed on purpose? An example could be Dead Rising and Gears of War. First they were announced for around this time April-May now they are being pushed to June. Now supposedly Dead Rising is being pushed towards the end of the year same with Gears of War. Dead Rising looks almost exactly the same it did when screenshots were released and the gameplay doesn't seem to have changed much. Gears of War just keeps bouncing around with its release date and so far we only have a couple of screenshots.
With the PS3 supposedly coming out later this year do you think the Blu-Ray discs are going to cost more then the price of an xbox360 game?

Not on any moral grounds of course - I think it's just fine and most reasonable people shouldn't have a problem with "ass" in the name (don't they use it on network TV nowadays?) Please choose which one you would like to answer, if any :)
1) What is your take on games like Psychonauts or Beyond Good and Evil which receive critical acclaim but suffer from lackluster retail sales? What's to blame - marketing? retail shelf space? release timing?
2) We all know that game ratings and reviews help guide our purchases, but do we place too much emphasis on the opinions of others? Does reading a review before trying a title actually affect your opinion of the game?
3) Many have stated that if EA should go out of business they could take the entire industry down with them, inferring that if companies such as EA fail to turn a profit that gaming is no longer a profit center. How much credibility do you attach to these statements?
4) Microsoft has claimed many times that they strive for a game industry with only one hardware platform. Their belief is that our divided market actually hurts developers by splitting their profits and further confuses gamers when making purchasing decisions, and that having only one platform would stir more direct competition and produce better games as a result. Can our market survive with only one gaming system (a la the days of the original NES)? Has Microsoft's monopoly with Windows actually helped or harmed PC game development?
(pronounced sigh-you-foxx-two) :)

Wombat lamented in the last cagcast about the number of reviewers that EGM now has and that there can be no 'Ebert Effect" (I think that was his theory of knowing a reviewer to be able to tell if you care about that person's opinion). HOw credible do you find the reviews when one takes into account the "ebert factor" along with the 3 ultra-mini-tiny-uberbrief reviews of a game?
I think the 'ebert factor' kills an already suspect review system--thoughts?

Don't you think the PS3 rumors are starting to get out of hand?
For example, about the tightly controlled PS3 at E3. Wasn't that pretty much the same deal with the Xbox 360 at the E3 before its launch? Why the doublestandard?
Secondly, it seems that people keep jumping on what the PS3s price will be. I'm kind of sick of all the talk, and don't want to hear anything until its official.
Lastly, maybe this console war won't be much of a war after all. It seems many of the Xbox 360 titles will be making it to the PS3, and vice versa. Sure, there will be titles that don't make the cut, such as certain American games for Xbox 360 and certain Japanese games for PS3, however, it seems that ports might pick up with this cycle of console. Thus, might the console war not really matter in the end, or at least, between two consoles that will be getting many of each others games?
Do you guys think there is any point in buying budget games? For a majority of the $20 games, they are low quality, so why not just wait a year to get a game that will be $20 and will be much more enjoyable? The only $20 games I've enjoyed are Phantom Dust (which is a real gem) and the ESPN 2K5 games. Have you guys bought a $20 game recently?

(I'm sure you will cover this regardless)
•Also, what do you think about Computer Gaming World's decision to drop numberd review scores? They claim that readers simply look at number scores and this new change will force people to actually read what they think of a game.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat. I have a two questions.
1) As I write this the Revolution's name has been changed to the Wii. It seems to have garnered a pretty negative or at very least confused reaction from the gaming public. What do you think the impact of a game systems name has on the success of the system?
2) This question is for Wombat. What is your connection to CAG? Are you a co-creator of the site? Or are you just a buddy of Cheapy that is just enjoying the success of his friends site?
Anyway guys, great site and thanks for being not only game minded but still act as normal people. No big corporate nonsense, just two guys having fun with this and hopefully making a good profit and impact when it's all said and done.

Hi Guys,
I've got some questions regarding whether or not to buy a PSP
1) Is there any truth to the rumors that have been permeating many message boards, including the CAG boards, that Sony is going to release an 'improved' PSP in the near future?
2) Considering the current PSP library, do you think it is worth shelling out the 200$ (or 160 if you use the coupons in the forum) to get one?
Thanks guys, love the show

Just a quick remark. I unfortunately just watched 5 back to back episodes of the 1up show because I had nothing better to do at work on a Saturday night(I monitor people for sleep apnea). That show is garbage and tries to be too cool for its own good. You and Wombat have more integrity than any of those ego maniac dorks on that show. I laugh everytime I listen to you guys with your quick pro quo, and almost fell asleep watching their poor excuse for a podcast that has little relevance to video gaming. Looking forward to next week' s show.

I have another question...well more like comment/information. Wombat, please update your humor from Kobe pages to D.Wade pages. Unless you are talking about the hatred between each other from both "super stars". Did either, well I guess CheapyD might not be able to see it, not an international film release knower of everything. So probably Wombat again, did you see Silent Hill? Good? Did you pee in your pants, even just a little, during the movie? Also, do you guys think I should get into the aviation feild? I ask because in a few weeks I am proabably going to be signing up for classes to do this sort of thing. I am not really interested in flying a plane, but fix one. I was thinking of air traffic conteroller, but I hear there are more ATCs than jobs right now. Pretty random, huh? Another thing, could you both please do a voodoo dance to make Chris Pronger turn inside out and not be able to play hockey any more? Thank you.

Wombat brought up a good point in last week's CagCast. Aside from rabid gamerism, is there really a reason to buy a next gen system if you don't own a High Def TV? I suspect Wombat's friend would probably play his 360 more often if he had a decent TV to play it on.

This would be more of a post-E3 question, but let's try this:
After knowing the full specs and capabilities of the Wii and PS3, what would be the "break the bank" games for each system...meaning, if you could make a game that would take advantage of everything the systems had to offer (wand controller, 1080p, blu-ray), and would cater to the majority of gamers today, what would they be?

Hey guys,
I grew up playing Nintendo systems through N64, but since have been playing mostly PC and a little bit of original XBox. And I've got to say, Wii has me excited for a console for the first time in a long time.
Do you think the Wii is going to pull in a lot of gamers who have since left console gaming because of the complexity of games/controllers?
And secondly, this may be a longshot, but do you think the Wii could possibly move into 2nd or even 1st in marketshare... as it seems like everyone I know who plays games is dying to get one, or will the hype die down when PS3 is released?

The Xbox360 and PS3 are both partially being marketed as a player for their new media formats (Xbox360 for HD-DVD's and PS3 for Blu-Rays). This aspect of the marketing campaign has revolved around the fact that the consoles are going to be cheaper than the first generation players. Sony is even using this as grounds for keeping their PS3 at 600$ as it is cheaper than the 1000$ Blu-Ray Player.
But, $600 is still a great deal of money and this may deter consumers from buying a PS3. If people won't spend the 600$ for the PS3, they certainly wont spend 1000$ for the Blu-Ray player.
So, does this mean that HD-DVD's may have already won the format wars, or at least gained a huge advantage?
Love you show and your coverage of E3

In your opinion, what will it take to make the PS3 worth the cost? Looking back at previous genereations, was there any console that gave you $600 worth of enjoyment over it's lifespan?

I just had a backflash to a system Sony marketed only in Japan and that it failed miserably. I dont recall the name of this system but like the PS3, it touted itself as a total entertainment system and as an afterthought also played PS2 games. The price was so high that not even japanese gamers bought it and it fizzled out quite quickly. Now I am hearing that PS3 is being touted in the same way with a huge price tag (even higher in England at around $800!) And although I have purchased just about all consoles over the years I dont think I will be buying the PS3. I think Sony is trying to be everything in the entertainment industry and has lost focus on delivering a gaming console for the masses this time around. What do you think? I mean Wii concentrates on only gaming. Microsoft concentrates mostley on Live gaming with some musical/video features added. Dont have to buy the add on HD DVD player. But Sony is concentrating on non existent 1080P, Server functionality?!,cramming everyone else ideas into it(wiimote& dual SKU's), and above all telling us we need their propreitery BluRay to live in Sonys world. and to top it all off, it will be the most expensive thing out there that no one will buy for their kids for Christmas.

What do you guys think of the recent rumors regarding potential games for the Wii, specifically DMC and Nights. Assuming these rumors are true, do you think these types of games will have a big affect on Wii sales and, more importantly, longevity, or is this Resident Evil on the GC part 2?
Also, to further the Nights speculation, what is your opinion on Sega porting old Saturn titles as downloadable content for the Wii? (Which, BTW, sounds like a MUCH more profitable venture than a sequel would.)

Mr. D, Mr. t,
Recent previews of the Superman Returns game have revealed it to be of the open-ended persuasion, like Ultimate Spiderman, Spiderman 2, and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Now my question to you two is: Has the open-ended "sandbox" aspect become an integral part of any comic book lone superhero game? I mean, look at the recent games for Batman Begins and The Punisher, they were widely criticized as being too plain. Would a sandbox aspect have helped these games?

I agree the reason they released the price because gamers under 22 years will have to save for a long time to have the $800 cash to buy the system. The funny thing is that in 95 when Sega released the Saturn, Sony stole their thunder by saying the price of their system is $299. $100 less than Sega. I think Nintendo should have played the price card and annonced their price right after Sony with the price of $199. I can't see how the PS3 is worth an Xbox 360 AND a Nintendo Wii.
360 + Wii > PS3
I see Sony having some problems selling this beyond 5 Million units at this price.

OT question for CAGCast 32. I just saw a news story about canned oxygen being sold in Japan for roughly $5 US. Supposedly it allows around 30 "puffs" of oxygen for an "energy boost."
Since you spent your (arguably) hard-earned money on the Final Fantasy potion, are you going to give us a review of this cool new product?
EDIT: I also have an on-topic question. Famitsu did a post E3 survey on what console/games the Japanese games are looking forward to. The Wii was by far the most anticipated with 68% of the vote. Is this surprising to you given that the Japanese gamers are so Sony-centric?

Why do you guys completely ignore PC games on the CAGCast? Even if you don't play them, you could at least mention them in the new releases. Heroes of Might and Magic V was the biggest game this week, for example.
Also, you said that the controls of Zelda weren't intuitive at E3. But isn't it possible that that may just be because they threw you in the middle of the game with a lot of stuff? When you actually play through it, they'll probably introduce the aspects of the controller to you one by one, because Zelda games always hold your hand.

What will Sony do with the PS3 if Blu-Ray fails to become the standard and HD-DVD wins?
I'm sure there won't be a clear-cut winner for at least a year after the PS3 launches, but if it does indeed fail, will the PS3 become just an extremely expensive piece of hardware that happens to play video games? And would you think Sony would drastically cut the price and market it as a video game console only?

?
love the podcasts and those commercials! so i was thinking, back in the 80's, we would hear jingles suchs as "genesis does! you can't do this on nintendo" or those atari 2600 commercials proclaming it's under 50 bucks. today, we don't get to see much hype anymore. yea, there's some xbox, ps2 and gamecube stuff but not as much as before? what do you think happened? where's the public console bashing? is it all console love? why not, "wii can do what anything they can do but better."
the line was "Genesis does what Nintendon't" and no one can ever top that, so no one tries ;-)

What was Cheapy's job before he became a house husband and full time CAG?
I'm pretty sure he worked for a non-profit organization.

First Time CAGbager long time listener. Cheapy D...thanks for the recent deals. Just purchased Half Life 2, Path of Neo, and Metroid Prime 2 for 31 bucks at Circuit City. Thanks for the great deal. The clerk questioned the Half Life 2 price, but price came up 9.99. Do you get more enjoyment out of the purchase of a great game at a great price or actually playing the game?
