Hello Cheapy and Wombat,

I've been enjoying the podcasts for a long time now and finally decided to join the CAG community.

What do each of you think about the drip feeding of screens and little vids that are released to create hype for titles, do you think it's a good thing or a bad thing?

It really annoys me when we're given screens and clips of pre-alpha build gameplay when the game is months away from being released. The most recent example of this is the clip of Fable 2 where a game that isn't going to be released THIS YEAR is shown off. The game is so early in development there's no telling if anything that was shown will be in the final game.

So, is it good or bad?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat.

In reference Wombat's advertising idea, there's an easier alternative that could be used in games that regular in game advertsising wouldn't fit ( ex Tony Hawk's Project 8 in comparison to Gears of War). They could just put the advertisements in places that aren't during the gameplay. If it's at the " press start " screen or the opening of the game, or even at some of the menus, then it wouldn't be too intrusive to the fantasy feel of the game.

For Example: You're in a multiplayer match on Gears Of War where the map is Old Bones. If you saw something that said " Sponsored by ( discovery channel logo) would it really even affect you? I think not. Plus advertisers get what they want, too. Although a person does spend more time in the gameplay that in the menus/ press start screen/ opening, at those points seeing it is inevitable.

Commercials in games would be too far through. A " Sponsored By ______" is enough in games where real world advertisements owuldn't see fit.

Cheapy,

Heard you on the Joystiq podcast...Good stuff. The podtoid appearance was better imo. Don't know what to think about the British sounding dude from the Motherland. He seems kind of lame.

Have you, or know anyone, that has used the PS3's remote function? Don't know what exactly it is called, but it is the function that let's you use your PSP to view content stored on your PS3 via wifi. 1up talked about it last week. Supposedly Tmobile is the only hotspots you can use. 1up mentioned that the first 6 months are free, then you pay an unknown amount after that.

Hello!
You guys mentioned the newly announced game, "Rock Band," last CAGcast and I was wondering why the game has gotten so much buzz. Emphasis on announced. There are almost no details about the game, except for how the game obviously works and record labels involved, and yet the hype wagon is all revved up and all ready to go:

Joystiq: USA Today Announcement (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/02/usa-today-harmonix-announces-rock-band-for-xbox-360-ps3/)

So my question to you guys is do you think some of these, "Game blogs," or dare I say, "Web-comics," are getting paid to virally report on certain games? And if so, your thoughts?

Hey guys! Where do you think gaming in the home is going? I know neither of you are really PC gamers, so do you think the PC will continue to lose mass support as a gaming platform? Will we just keep buying better versions of gaming consoles? Or will the Microsoft dream of an all-in-one PC/Console/Media Center come to fruition? Is the marketplace big enough for all three indefinitely? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Gentlemen, I am absolutely in love with the phrase, "Buyer's Wii-gret" when describing the Wii.

I bought it because my wife really wanted it, and it was fun, at first. (I even stopped playing Zelda 30 minutes in - goatherding isn't exactly my cup of tea.)

Now, it seems like people are desparately trying to defend the Wii, going so far as to get riled up with the word "fad" is used in association.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to play some good games on the Wii, but now I'm more interested in using it as a GameCube.

Which leads me to my question(s): If there were more Wiis in the retail channel, do you think that the general public's opinion would sway to that of "wii-gret?" Could this be why Nintendo "supposedly" has been holding back the flow of consoles to the consumer?

Hey guys great show, I always listen to it even if you guy DO talk about Oblivion to much.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was, do you guys find that the Wii is getting an unjust and unreasonable amount of praise because of it's 250 dollar price tag? I know that this IS Cheap Ass Gamer, so people obviously appreciate that, but honestly, I would say it's almost impossible to have the Wii as your only 'next-gen' system and yet many CAGs and gamers in general seem to do just that.

Just wondering what your thoughts were on the unfair praise being given to the Wii so far in it's life cycle, considering all it's really showed so far is Wii Sports. (Zelda and Super Paper Mario were/are GC games)

You guys were all excited about Guitar Hero II's DLC in the last podcast and now that the song packs are out at around $6 (500 pts.) for just 3 songs, what are your thoughts about the DLC now? Do these releases hurt the potential long life that you thought the game had when the DLC was first announced or is it a bump in the road for you guys? Will there be a Lumines-sized backlash against the GHII's DLC? Do you regret waiting five months to get Guitar Hero II on the 360 instead of getting it for the PS2?

Hi Cheapy and Wombat,

Both of you seem to be PC users and seem well versed in the PC world. My question is have either of you tried using an apple computer and how do you feel about the future of gaming on the platform. I know they have about 5% market share but a lot of reports are showing that it is on the upswing. Please no jokes about how the only games are photoshop.

Ok, I'll reword the question to avoid getting anyone upset. In response to Wombat's comments on the "Rock Band" coverage:

Do you guys think that certain gaming publications are getting paid to virally report on certain games? Take Penny-Arcade's "Rock Band" comic. We know nothing about the game and they've already told their fans to be pysched about it.

Hi Cheapy and Wombat,

I would like to here what Wombat and yours thoughts on developers pretty much pulling a "Madden" in the next gen, by slowly adding in options that we had in past gens game -
*Amped 3 has zero multilayer where Amped 2 did
*Tony Hawk Project 8 having less custom skater options then in TH2
*GoW, RB6:Vegas, GRAW having zero Clan support/less multilayer options where Ghost Recon on xbox and PS2 did. Then putting clan support in GRAW 2 as some major highlight
*Splinter Cell Double Agent had co-op pulled out (best part of a game that has had the exact same game play since Splinter Cell 1)
*Guitar Hero 2 ships with no multilayer while Rockband and Guitar Hero 3 will.

With the news that Guitar Hero 3 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6169126.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;0) will have a wireless guitar and online multiplayer this just futhers my complaint that companies are lazy and think they only way people will buy a new game in the seires is if they add one new skill/trick/move per game(The Tony Hawk series is a prefect example).

A question for Cheapy:

One of my recent obsessions has been the search for the perfect shave. Though I do not shave my head , it seems like head-shavers always have the best shaving tips because they have so much more surface area to cover. What's your preferred shaving ritual? Do you use different methods for your head and your face? Do you consider yourself a particularly well-shaven man?

I know these have nothing to do with cheap-ass gaming but we both know that 99.926% of all CAGcast listeners are men, so this is important, dammit.

CheapyD, Wombat, why not have a Digg the CAGcast contest? I feel bad because I only just got around to it myself, but if you gave me the possibility of winning sweet sweet loot my cheapass would have done it in an instant! You could verify the winner Dugg the CAGcast by requiring the winner to sign up for Digg using their CAG username. People who have Digg accounts already might have to sign up for a second one but I'm sure they wouldn't mind for the chance of winning say a Wii, or a healthy sum of playasia credit. Maybe run it for like a month.

One of my favorite game developers is Capcom. What did you guys think about all the latest announcements from Capcom this past week? Any hits or misses? Do you think Capcom has the right balance of new IP to go along the requisite cross-platform and re-releases they seem to love, or are they not doing enough original games to bring in new audiences?

Also, Cheapy, can you find out when the next Play Asia 20% off sale is? I wants an import PS2. :D

Dear Cheapy and Wombat

With the latest dashboard update on Xbox Live, do you think Microsoft is skipping over the gamers and doing more to entice younger people over to the 360? I know the teenagers love the text messaging.

Rather than focus on text, don't you think Microsoft would be better served to work on something most of the Xbox Live Gold members might care about such as improved voice chat? What do you think they should concentrate on?

correct me if i'm wrong but Microsoft is improving the voice chat along with this update...your supposed to be able to talk to multiple people at the same time...sorta like a "chat room"
also...Cheapy...seems like MS heard you complaining...a while back you wished that the 360 would have a auto power off feature after it finishes downloading...

do you feel like Nintendo is pretty much screwing people over with the lack of games for the wii?
going into what Wombat said about the DS being so successful and why Wii isnt just expanding on it...i think that people would want a brand new game rather than a port...

as far as PS3 goes...Cheapy...since you have the system...do you think its "WORTH" $600? is the system that powerful and great that paying $600 is ok? besides the lack of games...(cuz that'll change in due time) could this system justify spending that much money or could this system have been priced differently and be "worth" that new price...

Besides Wombat mentioning that he liked Grindhouse and Cheapy's non-sexual(?) obsession with Robo Cop, you guys have been pretty negative about any movies you've talked about on the show ("300" for example). Just wondering what some of your favorites are.

I write in defense of cut scenes in response to Wombat's statement that if a game uses cut scenes, the game isn't doing its job in telling the story.

I just finished God of War, yes the first one, over the weekend. I put it at the top of the list of games that have beautiful cut scenes (rendered in this case) and are truly integral to advancing the story. I can't imagine the story of Kratos being told any other way. Does anyone really think that story colud of have told any other way? The approach also added the cinematic feel the developers wanted to boot.

Sure that's one example and some game blow it in their implementation. In short, the in-game cinematics should be judged like graphics, gameplay, multi-player implementation, etc.; on how they add or detract from the enjoyment of the game. It is that simple.

Wombat should loosen up on this one.

I have a question for Cheapy.

I was sittin on MySpace reading some bulletins my friends made, and this one guy who I went to high school with lives in Japan now, had filled out one of them stupid surveys. Ya know "Favorite Gum?! "Favorite Teacher?!" (Yeah, THOSE stupid surveys..) But one of the question was "On average, what size tip do you leave at a restaurant?" and his answer was "0%! It's not allowed here!". Now I'm not sure if you talked about this before, but if you could maybe answer..WHY???

Kinda funny how in other cultures leaving a tip is wrong, and in America you get talked about if you leave a small tip/none at all!

This question is more for the "Your Man In Japan" segment than the regular videogame news and discussion.

Just the other day, I was watching Jaws on the Universal HD station and, for some reason, I thought Quint's "I'm talking about SHARKING!!" line to be hilarious. It's odd because I never thought it was funny before.

Fast forward to today, and out of curiosity, I google'd 'sharking' to get this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharking

Which lead me to something very odd indeed:

Sharking refers to a form of malicious prank that has supposedly become fairly popular in Japan. In the act of sharking, the perpetrator sneaks up on a victim in a public area in open view and forcefully exposes the victim's intimate parts to be seen by the public for a brief moment before running away. It is very similar to the common schoolyard prank of pantsing practiced by bullies, although sharking is done for the sexual stimulation of the perpetrator, whereas pantsing is done solely for the humiliation of the victim.

My questions are:

1. What the fuck is wrong with Japanese people?!

2. Cheapy, have you ever been the Sharker or the Sharkee?

Why is Wombat so negative about the Virtual Console? In the past few weeks you've both been complaining about the Wii having few good games, yet I've been busy playing retro classics such as. Splatterhouse, New Adventure Island, Sword of Vermillion, Gunstar Heroes, Starfox 64, Kirby's Adventure and more, all one small system. It's the ultimate nostalgia trip for true videogame fans.

One a side note, Wombat constantly complains these retro games are too expensive, yet he regularly gets raped by Gamestop on "trade in 2 games get 1 free" deals. It doesn't make a lick of sense to slowly bleed money into Gamestop. Thus, Wombat seems to be neither a collector of games or an appreciator of game history. So why's he on the show at all? He's broke, stupid, and annoying.

kind regards,

You know how some reviews say things like "its more of the same" or "you've played this game thousand times before" and the game gets a lower the score because of it. What I was thinking is that the new game should not get a lower score than the frist one just because it's just like the first one.

A few Dynasty Warriors games have actually gotten lower scores than the first game in the series because its more of the same. My thinking is if it is the same as the last game it would get the same score, but it doesn't beacuse the frist one was new and you never play anything like it.

Which brings me to my next point, people that have played bejeweled to death were not so happy with puzzle quest. I have never played bejeweled, I own puzzle quest and I think it is the best game for the psp bar none. So I guess I'm saying someone that is not exposed to an over use gameplay macanic will mostly like alot more just like someone who has never had a 360 but does have a ps3 will get much more enjoyment out of the ps3.

very sorry if didn't even ask a question through all that I just post somthing I thought up and though was interseting, I await people to tell me "well duh"

Cheapy,

As a rabid fan of Suda Goichi (Suda51) you can't imagine my frustration at being not able to attend the recent Zombie VS. Snake 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158755) even in Japan. Not only staring Suda, but Kojima, Mikami and Mizguchi.

All for a paltry 2500 yen.

My frustration could only be topped by my incredulity should you not take advantage of these Grasshopper Manufacture events in the future.

Odds are, these meetings are exponentially more interesting than most game conventions. The DigitalLife convention or.... a sit down with the creators of Killer7, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Lumines and Shadow of The Collosus.

Is there any doubt that these are worthwhile events to cover? Hell, they announced the sequal to Snatcher!

Cheapy, you gotta take advantage of your unique position. As much as I enjoy the giveaways and contests - covering one of these meetups would be ten times the gift for me.

What are the odds of you making the next one, whenever it is?

Cheapy and Wombat,

Great podcast! The CAGcast was one of the first podcasts that I downloaded, and its now become a staple on my ipod every week. I like the podcast so much that I played one of them for my girlfriend, which, actually, turned out to be a terrible idea.

Cheapy, you have ruined my life! My girlfriend will sit for hours reading about your exploits in Japan, refusing to go rollerskating with me, which is something we used to do constantly. Whenever I make the mistake of interupting the CAGcast when she is listening to it, she will shush me and get angry. And worst, at Wombat's recommendation, she bought Viva Pinata, and now I no longer have reliable access to my XBox360. I hope you're happy!

Dear CheapyD and Wombat,
I was wondering, why is the DS still selling to strong in the Japan and U.S. I have heard Cheapy saying how hard it is t find one in Japan, and I have had the same experiance in the U.S. There do not seem to be many games that are great and have that "Wow" factor but there are some. I know that puzzlequest recently came out and that might push a few more systems, but other then that and like, phoenix wright, trauma centre, and the final fantasy (which I happen to like) there do not seem to be that many great games. Thanks if you answer this and I love the show.

Hi guys,

What do each of you think about the incredibly popular pokemon series? With over 500,000 preorders in the US alone for the new Diamond and Pearl titles it seems like a LOT of people are interested in a pretty basic RPG adventure game.

http://cache.kotaku.com/assets/resources/2006/09/pokemonlineshinjuku.jpg

Have either of you played the previous titles in the series? If you're not interested is it because you think they're too childish?

I played the living sh*t out of Blue a loooooong time ago but I wasn't interested in any of the new games until now with them specifically designed for the DS.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
Do you think that songs for GH would be cheaper if people could download songs illegally if they wanted? Could this be one reason there is no GH for the PC? Because a PC version would be too hard to control and would quickly be hacked so that anyone could load any song they want into it? The easy availability of illegal downloads helped drive down the price for stores like iTunes, so maybe the lack of an easy way to do it for consoles keeps the price higher.

Cheapy and Wombat,
Oh, BTW, is there any way we could get a show under 1 hour again? I have lots of podcasts I like to listen to, and as great as the show is, the longer it gets the more likely I'll just skip around to stuff like reviews and news. I like most of the extra stuff besides strictly game news, but there is only so much time in the day and you're not the only game in town. In a way, you seem kind of like XBOX Live Arcade sellers, pushing the time(as opposed to price) as high as possible before you start losing listeners?

My sisters have gotten hardcore into 'Super Mario' (4hrs a day) but, they say that they don't like video games. Although it is obvious that they like them how can I get them to start playing other games (DS stuff maybe even some Xbox?)
Second...
I was talking to a friend of mine and we started talking about; a few different video games. And the subject of being disrespectful to the soldiers that are fighting or have fought and died for our (or other nations) freedom and, how some games almost insult that what are your opinions on that?
Thanks for your answers,

If you absolutely had to, or else your entire family and loved ones would be killed, would you rather:

1) Get fucked in the ass by a huge black man

or

2) Suck a guy off and swallow the load

Thanks!

Hey, got pretty bored today and was checking out your gamer card cheapy and see that you've been playing earth defense force. So, do you like it? Personally I think its a great game. Also a tip for long sessions, just listen to some music instead of all the in-game voices.

Hey guys, if both of you were a famous duo, either from gaming or comic books, which would you be? (i.e. Banjo & Kazooie, MJ and Scottie Pippen, or Bert & Ernie)

And who would be the sidekick/younger sibling/lackey, or the basically the one on bottom (like in Bert & Ernie's case)?;)

Here's a question for the infamous WOMBAT for his birthday episode.

WOMBAT, how do you get through each day of your miserable life without hanging yourself, slicing your wrists, or putting a bullet through your head? The nagging wife. The terrible jobs. Having more rats than money? What keeps you going... that some day you'll make something of your life?

CheapyD and Wombat,

A few months back I started listening to video game podcasts while bored out of my mind at work - it's basically the equivalent of reading a weekly gaming magazine but it still allows me to give the illusion of being productive. Anyway, I listen to quite a few over the course of the week, and the CAGcast is definitely one of the most enjoyable ones.

However, there is one thing about the podcast that bothers me - and that's your use of aliases. I guess that leads me to my question - I know you guys are friends outside of the CAG-world, so when you talk privately, do you still call each other by your CheapyD and Wombat aliases?

When you called your wives Mrs. CheapyD and Mrs. Wombat, I cringed a little at its absurdity. Surely you guys aren't so concerned with privacy that you avoid calling each other by your actual first names.

Aside from that, great show, it really makes my Wednesdays.

Cheapy, are you a member of the Japanese Club Nintendo rewards program, if not, why not?

Also, I forgot to ask Cheapy this a long while back, but are you able to get into the All Nippon Amusement Machine Operators Expo, or for that matter, the JAMMA show? Too late for for AOU this year, but JAMMA is in September, I think, and I think it would make an interesting feature to have for the YMIJ segments.

Guys,
One of the things that bugs me about the cagcast is that whenever I'm listening I keep wishing I could shout at you and tell you how wrong you are without my girlfriend staring at me, but with you hearing it. I think you should pick one good question from the cagbag each week, and then have that question asked by the person who wrote it, either over skype (just for the cagbag segment), or previously recorded.

This has the added benefit that you can't forget my name when I ask a question again :)

This is to both Cheapy and Wombat. How many people do you think can actually call themselves "Cheap Ass Gamers"? I mean, we have people who preordered the "Legendary" edition of halo 3 at 120 fucking dollars, but yet, are hesitant to spend 50-60 dollars, and sometimes even 25 on a great game. But really, if you are a real cheap ass, wouldn't you wait to see some gameplay footage (i know a video was released this week) before laying down 120 dollars for such a game and a helmet!

BTW, I was only using the Halo 3 thing as an example, I wasn't meaning to cut down the people who did preorder it in full.

Hey guys,

Recently, another wave of backwards compatible titles were announced by Microsoft. This question is a 2-parter:

First, how does Microsoft determine which games they will program (if that's the correct term) to be backwards compatible? Is the decision based on sales numbers/popularity of the game? Surely, that can't be it because there are some pretty crappy titles that they've made b.c.

Second, with the release of the Elite happening and the old Xbox being discontinued, do you guys think we will see an end to the backwards compatible titles? I'm still waiting for the rest of the Prince of Persia series to become b.c.!!!

good show, as always. Wombat cracks me up, "I sneezed."

Anyway, my Q...

Do you think we will ever see downloadable content go on sale? For example, the XBLA games that have been out for a year now, do you think MS will lower the price of them, or just keep 'em sitting there in case someone new comes along and wants the game (or you or Wombat get too drunk and spend some points in the wrong way). And will the big N ever lower the price Mario 64 on the VC?

And kind of related, do you think there will ever come a time when downloadable content gets taken off the marketplace? For example, I am interested in the new characters for Marvel:UA, but don't plan on getting the game for a good bit still...will I miss out on Venom and the Hulk by waiting?

Hey Cheapy D and Wombat

Long time listener, first time posting, love da show!

SO..

With older consoles like TG-16 and genesis doing somewhat well on virtual console, how do you think the new crop of VC "consoles" will fare( such as MSX, and more importantly NEO-GEO) on the wii this summer?

plus with Cheapy in Japan and getting them first, will you download them?

Thanks guys you rock!

Have you guys considered doing the CAGcast on a different day? Since games are released the same day you do your show, why don't you wait to do the show on a thursday or friday so you can give your thoughts on brand new games from that week that you have spent a few hours playing? Now I have to wait until next week to find out if the Heroes/Villains pack for Ultimate Alliance got Wombat to squeal with joy.

Once again, GREAT podcast. My favorite on the net, bar none.

I am NOT the biggest fan of Blu-Ray as I don't think the increase in quality is worth the format change, and I LOVED Wombat's comparison to Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest (TEH SUCK)'s sales on DVD.

BUT... (and speaking of "buts", how's the weight loss going Cheapy?)

How were DVD's selling versus VHS during DVD's early days?

I hate to try and paint any sort of hope into the picture for Blu-Ray, but it might be too early to say it's not doing well.

In regards to Cheapy's Forza experience: I have trouble when I play racing games with a wheel too. It's harder to play, but it feels cooler, if that makes any sense.

Also, some feedback:

Cheapy, PLEASE STOP RUSHING WOMBAT!!! I really like his input, and it seems that towards the end of anything he says, you try and hurry him up and move on to the next point. I REALLY wanted to hear Wombat's thought's on Justice League Heroes, since I love the game and was hoping he'd give it a chance, but you just kept cutting him off.

Wombat (didn't think YOU were getting off the hook, did you?) it's your opinion, and I can't say you're wrong, as that would be silly, but I personally disagree that Justice League Heroes had good PS1 graphics. I was pleasantly surprised with the visuals, and that's high praise considering I usually play Xbox games. However, I completely agree that it blows not being able to choose which characters you play all through the game.

Thanks for your time.

With retro gaming being back "in" (well it was always in, but now it's becoming more and more accessible due to VC, XBLA, Gametap, etc). In your opinion, what game has crushed your nostalgic memories the most? Any games you'd been dying to play again only to find out it really wasn't as good as you remembered?

This is to you because of something you said a few episodes ago. You said you saw an American Wii on Playasia for $400. You said you should have bought too seeing how much Playasia credit you have. I was wondering, how did you get so much credit that a $400 purchase seems like nothing?

are they playable on a DS from lets say the US or Canada, or do I need a Japanese DS to play it? Also do they ship to Canada? Thanks guys for the great show, really helps my study sessions go by quicker!

What's your view on the rehash of RE4 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma? I can understand the retro gaming craze that is going on with DL games, and I can even swallow the classic NES games released on GBA, but something seems not so right with the re-re-re-releases of these recent games (RE4 and NGS). It just seems like a waste to allocate resources and manpower to these 3+ year old games. I'd much rather see RE5 and NG2 or whatever they want to call them...bottom line is bring the next gen experience with NEW CONTENT, don't just cash in on a graphical update and some new swords/controls cause you know we will pay for the same game for a 3rd and 4th time. It will be interesting to see what the MSRP is for these games.

Just like experimenting with DLable games and what the consumer is willing to pay, this rehashing of titles in HD is an experiment IMO. What if another million copies are sold of RE4 or NGS? This will undoubtedly set a precedent (like the dl games) and get many board rooms buzzing with ideas of what last gen titles to re-release on your next gen system in "full HD glory" with some new items and/or controls. Pick your top 4 favorite or bestselling games from last gen on each of the consoles...Would you pay another $40-$60 for a graphically updated version (on a next gen system) with some new items or control scheme? I would bet some developers are asking the same questions.

Last question, what are some other games that have gone down this road?

Dear CheapyD and Wombat. love the show, I've been listening for about 2 months and just recently joined the forums. I've got a question that hopefully I could get answered on the show.

Question - What do you guys think about the new recent pokemon craze? Pokemon diamond and pearl had over 500,000 pre-orders here in america before it came out and sold extremely well. I understand that in japan the game sold 5 million copies by 1 month, and here in america it sold 1 million copies in just 5 days!! What are your reactions to this kind of success for such a long running franchise? does it show that the pokemon franchise is still going strong, or is it because of the name? personally, I grew up with red and blue and I love diamond and pearl and I reall couldn't be anymore pleased with the newest editions to the pokemon universe. thanks for you time and response and keep up the great work on the show.

Hi Guys

Im just interested to get your take on Nintendos purchase of Monolith Soft. Do you see this as a step in the right direction in order for nintendo to to ensure they have developers making games for the Wii or do you think they would be better off trying to provide more incentives for third party devlopers to make something for the Wii?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Anyways, I am taking it in school next semester here at Southern Illinois University (So Salukis!) and I was wondering if you have any pointers or really just some feedback so I know what to except. Wombat... you had me not at hello, but when you mentioned that you played Sword of Vermillion for Genesis during the Christmas season of 1990... but my question is... do you still have the game and the hint book that came with it?

And just a quick comment... My "hate" for Wombat trading in games to Gamestop is bred from this fact... I had over 140 Sega Genesis games with box and instructions... Sword of Vermillion, Valis III, Mutant League Football, Ghostbusters, Shove It, and tons more... but I traded them for credit to get money for the "new" Panasonic 3DO system back in '93. Worth it, wasn't it?!

What's your thoughts on special effects in comic book movies? For example, do you think the special effects in the Spider-man movies look "better" than the old school films, such as Superman: The Movie? To me, there's no way Spider-man swinging around in CGI looks better than Christopher Reeve chasing rockets over Hackensack, NJ...

Hey guys,

Once again, love the show and especially Wombat's on-air birthday surprise!

Quick question: Becuase both of you live in apartments, I'm curious to know how you store your video games and accompanying peripherals. I — fortunately — have a loft in the house where I store most of my junk, but I can imagine that in an apartment, space is at a premium. Do you keep the games in their cases or do you have them in a wallet? Are there specific shelves you would recommend?

I've been itching to get Oblivion for the 360 for a while, but I've been too damn cheap to pay the $60 for the game. Now, before I get chastised about how it is worth the full price, I still want to save money (That's why I joined this site). I know you guys aren't psychics, but I'm still wondering: Do you see a price drop for Oblivion (360) soon? Seeing as how the PC version is getting these great deals on the game itself and the expansions, the 360 shouldn't be too far behind.

P.S. My PC is far too underpowered to play Oblivion, so the PC version is out of the question.

What's your favorite place to window shop for video games in Tokyo?

Are there any "hidden gems" as far as stores that sell games that you could recommend for gaijin/travelers?

Do you visit the arcades much in Tokyo, and if so, what are some of your favorite or notable games that you've seen or played recently?

Do you travel outside of Tokyo much, and if not, where would you want to visit?

Aaaand finally, a CAG website question: would you consider writing editorials for the CAG site to supplement your comments in the CAG-cast?

Maybe you think that it's enough already with the Major Nelson insulting... But honestly the guy is such an egotist--he deserves it.

So I'm thinking this--You know how he doesn't have a co-host to banter with--just him talking into the mic with maybe an interview or two interspersed. How about his podcast be nicknamed "The Vagina Clown Monologues". Catchy, right?

Hey what's up , long time listener first time poster. With the new SNK card game for DS having a bug that prevents you from accessing all of the games content, and with past issues like the boss in Bubble Bobble Revolution not showing up do you think that a customer should be able to a return a game that has such a terrible glitch in it? I remember when I bought Bubble Bobble from a Gamestop they gave me a hard time returning a new game and only offered to switch it for another copy. After explaining the situation to the manager and demonstrating how the boss never appeared he kindly refunded my money. My main question is if a game is unplayable due to a glitch in the programming should a consumer have a right to return it even though most stores have a policy against the return of new games?(btw I love the show)

I was going to ask a different question but, damn this is a great one some I'm riding on his coat tails. It doesn't seem fair for the customers who bought the broken game but also what about Gamestop and the other big time distributors? It’s not their fault that they were given broken games to sell? Who is ultimately responsible for the customer’s satisfaction? The game maker or the game store who sold the broken game?

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
Although the Wii isnt the most powerful system, it had these little touches that makes it feel genuine. For example today I was playing Super Paper Mario, and when I went to save the game a dialogue came up saying that the batteries in my controller are low, and that I should replace them. I know its not a great feature or anyhting but I was very surprised and glad that it did that. Ok well maybe it isnt something to be joyous over but hey, I think its a nice touch. I still wish the system was more powerful but hey the games are fun....when games come out for it atleast they are fun.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat especially,
In one of your recent shows you read off that a lot of people have been saying that Wombat doesn't add anything to the show and that he should be ousted. I could not disagree more. Even if Wombat does seem a bit immature at times, the show needs that. If it weren't for Wombat the show wouldn't be that entertaining. No offense to Cheapy, you are one of the best podcast hosts I listen to, but Wombat just adds that element of fun. So Wombat, for the record, you are not annoying or too immature, although calling Major a Vagina-Clown was hilarious, you did repeat it too much. The show needs you Wombat, without you it would be too serious. I love listening to you guys cause I have a great time doing so and it always lifts up my spirits when i am feeling down.

And also, you are right in a sence about Major being a spokes person for Microsoft, but I have to admit that if you want the best source of 360 News his podcast is the thing to listen to. I mean come on I would never expect to hear the latest Wii news on a show entitled "XBox Live's Major Nelson" but maybe thats just me.

Hey guys - a couple of questions if you will...

- A couple of months ago, Cheapy mentioned a device that he had procured that allowed you to draw Japanese characters/Kanji on it, and it would translate them for you. I had a search of the forums but couldn't turn up much - could you put a link ot the manufacturer's site/Amazon for this wonderous piece of technology?

- I occasionally dabble with podcasting, and as someone who has tried a few different recording procedures, I was curious as to the CAGcast methodology. What programs/techniques/hardware do you guys use?

As an aside, I've been listening to the show for about a year, and I couldn't imagine the CAGcast without Wombat. Keep up the fantastic work, and I'll keep listening/digging/making my purchases through your associate links. :)

1. Still plan on getting back in shape for the pool cheapy? How much do you normally bench, and how fast do you normally run a mile?

2. Besides gaming, what other hobbies do yall get into? Fishing? guitar? skate boarding? Just curious.

3. After seeing wombat for the first time in real life on the unboxing video, how tall are you? Im saying 5'9", but certainly not over 6'. And wombats voice does not match what he looks like, I thought he would look more like Joe Pesci.

Now that MS is cracking down on users outside of the USA dloading USA content, movies and such. How has this affected you CheapyD? Have you been under the radar?Let me give you MS quote:

"...unfortunately we are legally required to ensure that all content on Xbox Live is only available for download in the country in which it is licensed. If we don't we may not be able to continue providing quality content. We're not trying to stop people getting the content they want - we're trying to ensure that we can continue to provide great content on Xbox Live, and bring that content to other countries in the future. I should also point out that licensing agreements like this are standard practice in the entertainment industry."

Hey guys,

I was wondering about your feelings for the future of the PSP. I've never felt the urge for one, but the combination of a redesign, God of War, and now potentially on original entry of Final Fantasy as opposed to a port has piqued my interest. Can the PSP get a "lite" makeover and some quality games and turn it around?

Do you think Nintendo artificially lowers supply of DS/Wii products to bring up demand/hype? Or is the low availability part of the profit minded thinking that Nintendo works by? No need to immediately create new factories or air ship units, increasing costs. I see no reason why there is still a shortage of DS in Japan, Wii shortages at this stage in the Life cycle are hardly realistic considering the technology the Wii contains

In response to criticism about Wombat on the CAGcast, I think I have found a very solid comparison. Probably the most popular video podcast ever (they're #1 on Digg big surprise) , Diggnation starring Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht is a podcast where they talk about some of the popular articles submitted to Digg. Just like the CAGcast one host is the owner of the site the show is based on (Rose/CheapyD) while the other is in the entertainment industry (Albrecht/Wombat). Both Albrecht/Wombat annoy their cohosts by asking for free stuff or making them do something (Albrecht forced Rose to leak some Apple stuff while Wombat always offers suggestions for the show that result in more work for Cheapy). Both Rose and CheapyD lost their street cred supposedly (Rose by not doing hardcore illegal shit anymore and Cheapy buying non cheap games). There are a shitload more similarities but the most important one is the off-topicness. Wombat will fill us in if his wife is naked and Albrecht said he'd take a sperm control pill up the ass. Without these two, the show lose alot of the personal touch (which is apparent when the CAGcast does interviews). I like to watch/listen to both of these podcasts BECAUSE of the homely feel. Sure I could get the same important info from other podcasts but I choose these podcasts because they feel more personal. Somehow when Diggnation does a live show or when Wombat talks about Nutrisystem the balance of news and entertainment is perfected and I'm content with it as it is right now on these great podcasts. Wombat keeps the CAGcast balanced and despite his sometimes moronic rants is an essential part of the CAGcast.

Is there anyway to implement a thorbahn3 button for the CAGbag thread? Just a little check box that will change a person's name to 'thorbahn3' in this thread so there's a chance you might read and answer that question?

Cheapy--in previous CAGcasts you mentioned that you were excited about Xbox Live's video service because you are starved for entertainment. Have you checked that you can't download certain marketplace content any more?

Have you found a way to circumvent this region protection? By the way, for a corporate-speak explanation as to why this was done, fast forward the latest Vagina Clown Monologue (#224) to 1:05:55. Can't you spoof your IP address somehow to beat this?

I would very much like to know how mods decide what posts and threads to delete, merge or move. I have found it very irritating lately that threads that I created that I found to be valid as well as posts I have made have been moved, merged or just plain deleted without a word said. For example yesterday I read the thread about Sony now making point cards to buy PSN stuff on their network. I made a remark that this was another copying of Microsoft strategy. This was not flamebait or anything of the sort. I have every console Sony has made but I will be the first to admit they make some pretty bonehead moves. This just seems to be another where they will force you to buy more points than you need just like Microsoft. I have no idea why this post was deleted but then I never have any idea. In addition I have made some deal posts I have felt to be good deals but have been deleted by mods. I think other people have missed out on some good deals from my posts because some mod felt the thread was not worthy or too related to something else and it was merged where it would not be seen by many people. It makes me not want to post on the site and I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way. Please answer my questions unless you decide to delete this post.

Cheapy, it's well known that you make a decent amount of money off CAG; from ad clicks, to purchases we make through CAG's affiliates.

My question is: Do you have any plans on taking this net income and putting it back into the site? What improvements, if any, do you have planned?

Perhaps add more servers, or upgrade them. Hire someone to redesign the site/forums. Those being just a few examples of improvements that would be most welcomed.

Wombat,

Getting the PS3 seems to have given you a new, positive attitude. The last episode was one of the better ones in a long time. You seem to be a "new man."

Can you go into more detail on your new system rituals? Do you just stare at the box for a few hours or days? Do you smell the box (that UPC hole in the Nintendo systems boxes is sweet)? Do you feel up the system, or spend time reading the instruction manuals? Do you prefer to play a game first or mess around with the dashboard/interface?

05-11-2007, 01:22 AM
Do you ever play an old game and wonder how they got away with certain things?
For example, in Streets of Rage 2 you can select a young black kid who beats the crap out of thugs while possibly wielding a knife. Something about a knife wielding child in a current generation video game would garner some backlash I'd think.

I was wondering what you guys thought would be the smarter buy first? An HDTV or a 360/PS3? I remember in an older CAGcast that you guys said you thought an HDTV is needed to make the 360 worth the purchase. Well, now it's a lot later, the 360 has more games, and I was wondering if you still felt that way.

And secondly...

With the new generation of consoles downloadable content is a very big aspect of games. Games are regularly coming out with the idea of cashing in on the marketplace very soon afterwards. Also you now have some games that you end up having to patch after you buy it because of bugs, and just a ton of downloadable games in general. For those of us on dial up, is this the generation where we just end up screwed out of a good deal of entertainment? Or is it still very possible to get your money's worth without downloadable content?

Thank you sirs, keep up the great work.

Wombat,

Last Wednesday I was excited for the spring update, like I'm sure most of us 360 owners were. Most people didn't show much enthusiasm for the msn feature that was added, but I was one of the few who were looking forward to it. Only to find out after I downloaded the update I couldn't use the msn feature because my windows live ID said it was a child ID! Naturally I called customer support to get this issue fixed and it appears because I signed up for Xbox Live using a Gmail address I am not allowed to use the msn feature. What do you think about this choice by Microsoft since we can not change our Live ID's?

Hi guys,

How much money do you think an hour of gameplay is worth on both home and handheld consoles? I know people, including yourselves have asked whether or not a game is worth $50-$60, and I think it is more important for people to look at how much an hourly cost of games instead of the overall picture.

An example I'll give is Pokemon Pearl for DS. It cost me $35. I've played around 35 hours, and that comes to $1 per hour of gameplay. That's where I think people should make a judgement on pricey games: How much money are they willing to invest per hour of gameplay.

Hey Brothers,
Not to long ago you guys were talking about castlevania S.O.N. and Wombat mentioned how much he would love to see a highly detailed 2D side scroller. Well my friends, your time has come. The game is called Odin Sphere and it is coming out soon on the Playstation 2. I know it is not next gen, but it sure as hell looks like it. Have either of you guys heard of this title? I would think the game would do well in Japan, but in the states, I fear it is doomed to go the way of Okami. I hate when great works of video game art don’t get any notice. Is there anything you think I can do to help promote the game (considering that I am a cheap and lazy gamer of course)?

Here's another one (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/mcv-new-riddick-coming-to-360-ps3/)

It looks like they are remaking Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay for PS3 and 360. I guess it's an inexpensive way to make games...just put shiny graphics on old content.

I have to disagree and say that any gamer with natural skill, particularly in the shooter genre can do well in halo 3. why don't you practice playing a different shooter with bots like pdz? i'm not saying they're exactly the same but learning from that will give you the skills you need for halo.

Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the Nintendo online friend code system? Or if you completely dislike the friend code system, do you have a better idea?

What do you think will happen with the next generation of gaming consoles after this one? Do you feel like all the systems will have motion controllers?

My opinion is that would not be good at all. With motion controlled controllers, you lose a lot of accuracy, menu systems become annoying without being able to use the d-pad or stick, and games seem like more of a gimmick than anything else. It would be cool if your character would do what you did with the remote, but it only recognizes simple movements. Guess we have to wait for the body suit controller....

It seems like more of a party type thing (you know, where you get drunk and make fun of people when you beat them or you throw a Wii-mote at them on "accident"). Not having a lot of fun with the Wii when I play alone...

I hope the next Xbox does not jump on this fad. I want to sit down in my big ass chair and rock out to the latest games. If I wanted to swing a controller like a golf club or tilt a controller so I made a turn, I would just do the real thing or buy a steering wheel attachment! So hopefully they will include an option for standard play and nerd play.

I guess I will have to switch all my focus to PC gaming if this happens.

I know all of that wasn't a question, but I needed to rant. I am concerned about what will happen next gen.

What are your views of the PSP modding comunity? I recently purchased a PSP for the sole fact that I could hack it for homebrew (and perhaps for a few other nefarious purposes) and find myself enjoying it quite a bit. Now, I don't think it'll ever be as great a system as the DS, but do you think if Sony encouraged instead of discouraged homebrew that it could perhaps gain a better foot hold in the hand held market?

Wombat and Cheapy,

How do you deal with marriage and being with the same woman every single day? I've been dating my girlfriend for about 8 months... she's 22 and a gamer. I'm 30 and also a gamer. She moved in around a month and a half ago. We have two Xbox 360's and when we play games we usually play separately, her in one room and me in the other. This may seem like an ideal situation but as time goes on I'm getting sick of her being around all the time. She's cute, a gamer, and fun, but I just need my space, like Sean Penn did in "Sweet and Lowdown." How do you deal with this on a long term basis?

For example, I've had my eye on the English Blue Dragon for a long time, and I'm pretty bummed that I either need to buy another strictly offline console or sacrifice XBoxLive just to import it. Sometimes you're in a situation where you're willing to pay a premium for an imported game, and the crackdown on modded consoles is criminalizing a very small group of very enthusiastic import gamers. Cheaters and hackers deserve to rot in hell, but what's so sinful about importing?

Holy Crap!

As a gamer who has made the migration to 360 from PC, I just about shit myself when I saw the awesome Fallout 3 teaser trailer in HD. Wombat, as a fan of Oblivion, and seeing as Fallout 3 is also from Bethesda, is this not the best candidate for the Hype Wagon in recent days? Did either of you play these games back in the day, and are you stoked for a full-on sequel of this long-dormant franchise?

I can't wait to play this one!

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,

I have a question and a suggestion:

Question:
Cheapy,
you said you got a new mac laptop. I remember you posting on the stickcam chat after the last live cagcast that you aren't interested in PC gaming, but you have also admitted to having purchased a PS3 and a few other things for the sake of the podcast and to be up to date with the gaming industry.

Dont you think you are missing out on an important part of the industry by not keeping up to date on PC gaming as well? PC gaming is gearing up for a big year it looks like, so I think you and the cags would only benefit from some PC love. Maybe once in a while you can have a segment where you bring in an person thats more into pc gaming?

Suggestion:

have you guys listened to the 1up yours show? every week they take time discuss briefly the most interesting topics on their message boards.
I think you guys should do that, not only would it be nice to catch up on topics one might have missed on during the week but it would also encourage cags to participate on boards other then the deals section more often.

thanks for a great podcast and keep up the good work guys!

Hi cheapy and wombat,

Ive been lisitening to your podcasts for around 4 months now and really enjoy it(specially the jokes :) ). Every week I hear you(cheapy) complaining that there are no Wii's or Dslites in japan whereas here in New Zealand they are just lying on the shelves. Used lites only cost around NZ$100 over here. Its really suprising hearing that they are out of stock in the US and japan.

On an another note, im an avid 360 and pc gamer. Though you cover a lot of the console games, it would be nice if you guys talked about big pc titles like LOTR MMORPG, crysis, unreal , etc...

Ahh my question, do you know if us NZers can access the XBL marketplace using an american credit card??We really want to watch the HD movies that you guys have there but due to microsofts restrictions we are unable to

Goodluck.

Hello CheapyD and Wombat,

First of, I would like to say that I enjoyed the podcast as usuall. Cheapy D, I completely agree with you on your stance on modchips, emulators, and piracy. If it weren't for modchips, console exploits, and emulators, I would have never had a chance to play the many Japan and Europe only releases that never see the light of day here in the more Capitalistic US.

Speaking of which, my question is what is the import scene like in Japan? Since I am so used to hearing about importing games from Japan, I always wanted to know if Japanese gamers import American games? It must have some business since there is a modchip for the Japanese Wii that enables it to play American games as you said in previous CAGcasts.

Hi Cheapy and Wombat,

I think I agree with your views on console modding Cheapy:

ie: modding for region free == good;
modding for cheating == bad;

But I can understand why some people were offended by your comments, it did sound a little like you were saying that modding 360 is bad but modding the wii is ok.

Anyway keep up the good work guys, I love the show.

As a kid I pirated tons of games. I am now trying to find legal copies of them to add to my collection. Modding for cheating and piracy is not good... As an adult with a job, I actually want to spend money on crap. It is the American way.

Anyway, modding for homebrew applications, programming, and imports is okay in my opinion. My original Xbox is a way better media center than the 360 because of XBMC. It can actually use codecs that are not made by MS. I also programmed a few crappy (very crappy) games for the DS lite and played them with that flash cartridge.

There is more to modding/flash carts than piracy and imports.

Hey guys,

With this recent run of "price mistakes" from places like Circuit City with the Matrix box set and, Deep Discount with well all the price mistakes as of late and a few others. Do you think online retailers get a free pass on not having to honor their mistakes like a B&M ? And should they have to do anything but just cancel?

Thanks

Hey CheapyD and Wombat!

I was wondering about your opinions on how Xbox 360 achievements are divided up between single player and multiplayer. In my opinion, 75% of the total score schould come from single player while 25% should be obtained during multiplayer. I feel this is the right ratio because it is difficult to play all the games which require these high amounts of kills, etc, and to still find time to play other games. I also worry that at some point the online community will die and then there will be no way to get those achievements whereas single player can be done on your own time.

This all came to mind when they brought to mind is the addition of future new achievements in Gears of War related to the new multiplayer maps and Annex mode. This would bring the total to 1250, and of those 600 would be multiplayer. Even though this is just about half of the total the amount of work that they require is excessive, and personally I think that it can ruin the online experience because people are trying to get specific achievements and not trying to be a team player. Perhaps future achievements would be more suited to playing how the game is supposed to be played.

this concerns the forums, as the recent deals with the memory stick pro duos, they are supposed to be posted in the other deals and requests section.. but as ive noticed lots of people miss it in there. example : i originally post the frys lexar 4GB MSPD for 39.99 deal in the other deals forum, then 3 days later someone posts the same thing in the video game deals, and much more people see it there before its moved.

is there any way to have the memory stick pro duo deals in the video game deals section, as most of us use it for our PSP, and it is an accessory.

After listening to your opinions on why people are so sensitive and quick to defend your system, why do you think people are the opposite way? What is your opinion on why when Sony is rumored to loose an exclusive people will say things like "SONY R DOOMED!" or "NO REASON TO OWN THE CONSOLE NOW!"? And so quick to criticize the console as if it killed their parents.

Cheapy,
Two questions about Japan for you:

1. Are comics and collectible card games (VS System, Magic, Yugioh, Pokemon, etc.) sold in the same stores as video games in Japan or are they sold in different stores as they usually are in America?

2. I just read a Kotaku article about a significant (for Japan) increase in crime in Akihabra (sp?) for the first few months of this year compared to all of last year in regards to pickpocketing and shoplifting. Have you noticed or know anyone affected by this?

Wombat,
One question for you also:

You are right near two of the biggest hobby stores in the US in King's Games and Neutral Ground (also these are two of the biggest area's to play VS in the US.) Have you been in either of these stores? If so what was your experience in them?

Thanks for your time. The CAGCast is one of the two video game podcasts I listen to (the other being Major Nelson) and I enjoy each and every episode. Keep up the good work and innovation.

Pokemon question for Cheapy and Wombat:

I too hadn't ever considered playing a Pokemon game before the recent pair, and positive comments from both of you have me seriously considering it, but the "collect them all" mentality has me worried. I'm always up for collection quests that actually give you new things to see and do in the game (e.g. Dawn Of Sorrow soul-hunting), but repetitive things like RPG level-pumping and waiting around for rare item drops can sometimes be game-ruiners for me. After a few weeks of play, how does the experience of drilling for new Pokemon stack up? Does it consistently bring fresh experiences to the game, or does it sink into completist tedium after a while?

Early reports from Europe would seem to indicate that the online multiplayer for Mario Strikers Charged is pretty fun and surprisingly well-implemented. Cheapy & Wombat,

Long time listener to the CAGcast and I love it, keep it up. It keeps my commute alive.

Just two questions:

1. Why was Wombat's speech all over the place in the last live Cagcast? Sometimes it was "oceanic", laggy, or perfect. Just wondering if it was due to the live CAGcast and then being transferred to a normal recording or if it was due to other technical difficulties.

2. Any chance that you could use more soundboards and soundclips? They really make the show funnier and are exciting to hear. Just a suggestion. Nothing like hearing Adam Sandler explain how wrong the price really is.

Keep up the good work guys!

Cheapy, I enjoyed hearing your brief take on emulation in the last podcast. However, all you touched on was emulation of more current gen systems, like with the R4 DS. What is your take on emulation of older systems? I find it hard to buy similar arguments for those - since you can only purchase the games used now, the developers aren't losing any potential profits. What do you guys think?

Also, I think you both need to keep checking in with Pokemon updates! Who's on your team, and what levels are they at? How many hours of your life has the game sucked away thus far?

Keep up the good work, you BOTH do a great job! :)

got a question either of you can answer...if there is an answer

Why is it that developers dont seem to like adding online co-op?
With the except of Crackdown, Gears, Tenchu and Vegas...i dont think there are any xbox live enabled coop games...

I grew up playing coop games like Streets of Rage, Secret of Mana, AvP, Halo and the Turtles...
i'm not talking about rehashes that appear on the live arcade... i'm talking about original titles...
just read on Joystiq about their close encounter with the upcoming Call of Duty 4...they mention NOTHING about co-op.

its hard to meet up with friends to play either offline co-op or system link...jobs and school get in the way not to mention distance to travel to nearest friend's house

is the programming that much harder for online co-op?

ATTENTION!: INCOMING QUESTION! Non FANBOYISH QUESTION!

What system do you guys think is the most valuable in terms of money?
In other words, which console is the better deal?

PS3 already has the next gen dvd player, rechargable controller, you can use your own camera and headset, it has the harddrive already built in and free online.

Thats all 600 dollars if you have the camera and headset already.
In 360's case, thats perhaps 100-150 dollars over 600.

I just wanted to make a couple of comments about criticism of the Live-Cast

First, Ive been listening to Cagcast for a long while now. and Ive enjoyed the evolution of the show. However, something that us cags cant possibly fathom is the hosts's thoughts about their own show. I mean we have seen you guys go from simple conversations, jokes, news rumors. Then interviews came about which are a great addition to your presentation, and speaks miles for professionalism in my opinion. Out of all people, you know your own progress, just making a point that it IS noticed, and its not bad to be reminded of that.

Eventually, though, the LIVECast came about, and I gotta say im not a technician or gadget wiz of any sort. I am pretty much astounded by the fact that you are able to do this and "still remain in your underwear". You are picking up calls, and Cagging in real life as I listen. Considering it is a maturing project, I understand that you guys are having some trouble with these technical difficulties.

More importantly however, I understand you guys do this because I imagine it can be terribly boring talking to the same Wombat and same CheapyD for 2 hours straight, recording, knowing that there is this void that will record all conversation. I mean, this has been going on for at least, what, 65 shows? I mean, you guys do talk throughout the week, dont you? I love some friends I have, but I too get tired of talking to ONLY them...So the possibility of having a dynamic show with listeners tuning in might inject a little excitement, at least for the hosts themselves...isnt that right, guys?

And yes, there are some technical problems, Im sure the internet had problems at the beginning. Fuck, even the wheel had some bumps during the Beta (if you read that on the Cagcast you will totally make my week, It was either that one or saying "Even Christianity had some issues during Beta"). Maybe the Caggers will feel a little less critical if you had some sort of way of letting them know how much your show is improving technically. Im sure its some sort of learning process for you, since you ARE learning audio and video (maybe) editing, webmastering AND Japanese on the side, arent you? well, considering all this entertainment and services are free (technically speaking, I spend too much on deals, overcagging if you will), I think we should cut you both a little slack. But some sort of update about technical improvements wouldn't hurt every now and then, telling us something like "Hey guys, so now Wombat's voice won't sound as if he was just making out with his microphone anymore....so quit yo' bitch'n" like you did on #79

By the way, I would give Wombat more credit...but i REALLY dont know if he is sweating over this show as much as CheapyD is. If he is however, all I gotta say is that that is the curse of "behind-the-scenes" work. Regardless, Thank you guys.

I just think that its your damn show, and you are to do whatever you damn want with it, and I am totally greatful for it, but i know there is room for improvement, yet constructive criticism is pretty much the only way to complain and not sound like bitching.

PS Truth be told, Ive only listened to the edited portions of the Livecast, not in the actual LIVELY fashion, so I dont know how terrible those shows actually come out to be. But in all honesty, if they were really so bad, wouldnt the hosts moved on from that novelty already? Considering it was so bad, and such a monumental failure, why bother with more...the point is they bother with more, because it probably has potential.

So keep up the efforts, guys.
Im the kinda guy that thinks effort goes a long ways further than results.

Hey Cheapy (and you too Wombat), love the show! Say, I'm a fellow Japanese language learner and I like practicing whenever I can. Unfortunatly, Japanese isn't the standard language in New York city so I am forced to try to either read or watch excruciating japanese shows on youtube. But recently I got a DS and was happy to learn that games are not region locked. My question is this: What are some of the good Japanese DS games that you've played? Hey Cheapy and Wombat.

I just wanted to say thanks for consistently putting together such an entertaining show each week. I work an overnight shift, and I download several different podcasts to help pass the time (and keep me awake) at work, but the CAGcast is far and away my favorite.

Here's my question- do either of you have any games that have become favorites of yours despite being from a genre that you're usually lukewarm about? For example, I normally don't care about fighters at all, but the original Soul Calibur is the one and only reason my Dreamcast still gets hooked up from time to time. Also, although I enjoy racing games, I generally find myself losing interest in them fairly quickly, but for whatever reason, Downhill Domination for the PS2 is one that I go back to again and again and never seem to get bored with. Any games work against expectations like that for you guys?

Thanks, and keep up the great work!

What's up, king of gaijin? I live in San Francisco and I we had these whales awhile ago that went the wrong way up the Bay and it was just on the news about how much it cost to get them turned around. It got me thinking about the diference in attitude about whales between the US and Japan.

I saw an article about how unhappy the government of Japan is with restricting whale hunting. I also saw an article about how the government media is promoting whale meat eating and I saw a picture where it looked delicious.

A few questions for Sir Wombat:

It sounds like you have a bit of experience (and cynicism) within the realm of game PR, so this question is directed to you:

What, do you feel is the likelihood that the recent AO rating (and subsequent banning in the UK) of Manhunt 2 is a fabrication by Take2/Rockstar? Everyone knows they’ve been on shaky terms financially, and they’ve been known to capitalize on negative PR in the past.

But some rumors persist. The recent purported meeting with Jack T is but one example.

So did Rockstar purposely show grossly hyper-violent demo to garner some attention, then will slickly release a “M’-rated game similar in content to the original Manhunt? Will gamers ever settle for a toothless, castrated version of this game?

Do you think they will try to release this game as/is across a smaller retail front? What are the odds of its success/changing the retail paradigm?

Now Question Two for the both of you

GTA San Andreas was a landmark game in size and scope, few games are larger. Now I’m a bit worried about the 50 million Microsoft put down for a few downloadable episodic pieces. Before Marketplace/VC/Sony Paystation (or whatever the name Sony uses) a game maker would try to fill the game disk with as much content as possible. Now, content is purposely excluded to later be sold (see Crackdown, most EA Games, etc), this is compounded by the ten dollar increase in many games. Do think this is a fair practice? Do you expect any gamer backlash, as we saw a bit of with the GH downloadable content? Or will gamer bitch for a few months, then adapt to the new status quo?

Love the show, keep up the good work. I've been reading recently that Nintendo's considering yet another redesign of the DS. While I would like to see a more responsive D-pad and internal memory, I'm not a fan of buying the same system twice. What do you guys think?

Hey Cheapy, I was wondering if you would do a guest spot on all games radio while your at e3 this year. Mr Rubin has been saying that his new gaming lounge will be up in a month or two. It would be great to hear you during allgames radio. Just a thought.

Wombat,

I haven't listened to #80 yet, but after hearing about your troubles with your 360 (episode 79), why have you not sent it in yet? How long have you been dealing with the tray issues, etc.? You are a patient man, my friend. I would have sent that shit back after the first few times I experienced any sort of problem with the system. Besides, you have a PS3 and a DS to keep you occupied while you wait for your 360 to be fixed.

Send it in and keep us updated on the progress.

Episode ?? - You said you needed new iTunes reviews, and you said to encourage more reviews, you'd read some of the new ones over the air next episode. That never happened.

Episode 79 - Lack of games for the Mac. Sadly, true. However, you have a Macbook Pro with a Core 2 Duo processor inside. Which means, you can install Boot Camp, and reboot into Windows to play all your games.

Predition - If CheapyD buys a gamer PC, his 'Xbox bias' will be torn, as a powerful gaming PC runs FPS games far better than the Xbox 360. It won't be immediate, as Cheapy is loyal to the Xbox currently. However, PC has quite a year coming, so look for 'the betrayal' in future episodes.

Would you like to endorse a candidate for President? (If you say Ron Paul and put in the Cagcast title, I guarantee you'll get a ton more downloads. He has a huge presence on sites like digg. And he'll never vote to regulate games, he doesn't want the government to regulate much of anything.)

Yeah, he has a huge presence on Digg as King of Spam.

I think it's safe to say we'd like to leave politics out of our gaming.

Hey Wombat and Cheapy,

I'm liking the live episodes and the every other week format. Even when the live episodes turn into a giant cluster-shaq-fu, they're still pretty entertaining in a "Raw Danger" sort of way. I also think the recorded shows help keep the series anchored and on track.

so anyway here's the actual CAGbag question:

You guys have talked about how 3rd party developers are now trying to catch the coat-tails of the Wii's success. Do you guys think the large install bases of graphically inferior consoles such as the PS2 and Wii will eventually prevent many developers from bothering with next gen graphics engines? Lately I've been seeing some complaints that many upcoming titles are essentially games polished up from current-gen graphics engines (Beautiful Katamari, All-Pro Football 2K8, Eternal Sonata). Do you think this is because of future consideration of porting the games over to the Wii and will this become a trend that hurts the more powerful consoles?

Hi guys, this question is in reference to an answer you gave to the caller from CAGCast #80 where he asked whether he should wait to buy a PS3 or buy it now. While it is true that there will probably be a price drop, what do you think Sony will do to make that drop happen? I'm referring to the exclusion of the emotion chip from the European PS3s. I believe that removing the chip from U.S. consoles will be the only way that Sony can cut the price. Personally, I'd rather pay more money now and be assured high backward compatibility. The issue of bc is more relevant for the PS3 than any other console since the PS2 has arguably some of the best games around. What do you guys think?

Thanks for answering my question on Cagcast #80 even though i wasn't really satisfied with your answer and especially Wombat's.

This is another question worth answering:

What series do you think have no place to evolve in terms of gameplay but just do more of the same kind of thing?

GTA and Halo are the ones i think have no place to evolve in terms of gameplay.

Since Manhunt 2 got a rating of AO, what's the likelihood that Grand Theft Auto IV might get the same AO treatment? Basically, politicians and media probably can rally the ESRB to give AO ratings to games that are deemed inappropriate.

Manhunt 2 couldn't have been that much more different than Manhunt, however now it gets a AO rating. Had Manhunt 2 come out sooner after the release of Manhunt it would have probably gotten the same Mature rating.

Is it possible that Take two, might try to appeal the ESRB's decision, Manhunt 2... no different than Saw 1, 2, 0r 3... in my opinion..

Suddenly in a strange twist of fate and what not, various people in power around the world, presidents and billionaires (called the BrainTrust) decide the year now ends at June 22nd.

So Cheapy and Wombat, with only 6 months of games, whats your game of the year, 2007 1/2?

Hey guys, first of all I loved your "Stump the Retailer Segment" as I work at my local Bleep-Stop where we buy and sell used Bleeps. Because of this I am also used to putting up with ESRB bullshit.
Your Man Hunt 2 discussion piqued my interest and it got me thinking. (I apologize for the following long ass post) Basically what is happening is that because the big companies like Nintendo and Sony won't allow Ao rated games on their respective consoles, coupled with the fact that the ESRB has so much power that they can essentially block a title from being sold anywhere if they give it an Ao rating, video game publishers are being censored and regulated on what they can or cannot create.
I know this is jumping to conclusions, but this type of regulation could lead to even worse things. What if some day because of this ESRB nonsense, a customer will walk into a store and every game on the shelves will be called "Maximum Amount of Violence Allowed to the Point of not Being Rated Adults Only"?
My point is that limiting the creative juices of game developers could cause generic or limited games, in terms of content. Now with all that out of the way I thought of a solution to this problem, and it is this:
Developers of extremely popular, yet violent game franchises (Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War, Resident Evil, etc.) must do the following: Release Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, Gears of War 2, and Resident Evil 5. Make them the greatest games that their respective series have ever seen. Except up the violence and gore to such a point that they would have to be rated Ao. Then the plan would unfold. Most stores would not carry these games, but any that do carry them would sell out like crazy. A large demand would grow for these games, but they would be very hard to find since 90% of retail stores vowed not to carry them. Public pressure would grow, people would walk into Gamestops wanting these hot titles, and when they are told that Gamestop refuses to carry these games, customers would be furious and would lose faith in these retailers. After all if they're not going to carry the games from these huge franchises, then what's the point of shopping there? Every industry is motivated by one thing. And that's the almighty dollar. When retail chains that don't carry these games see them start selling like hot cakes from other sources, they will realize what a huge piece of the proverbial pie they are missing out on. The general public as well as investors in those companies will pressure them to start selling the Ao rated games. Eventually they would crack, and start selling them, and from that point on, things would be different.
My point to all of this rambling is that publishers have to come together in some sort of way (maybe the way described above). They have to stand together and say, "We will not let some generic rating system dictate what type of games we can or cannot create. It's up to the consumer to decide."
If a consumer buys a certain type of game, obviously more of that game will be made, since there is demand for it. If the opposite is true, publishers would stop making that type of game, as no one will buy it. This is how it should work with Ao rated games. The consumer will naturally decide whether they should be sold or not. I guess that concludes my "State of the Industry Address" wanted to know what you guys think if this situation. Thank you for your time.

Cheapy, when are you going to let Wombat host the CAGcast? I think it'd be interesting if Wombat brought up all the topics and you played the sidekick for a change. It would also make the Wombat haters go bat-shit insane, which alone could be quite amusing.

Hey there Cheapy and Wombat,
Great job with the CAGcast, I’ve been listening since the beginning and it just keeps getting better!

For the sake of on-air reading I’ve spilt this up into a quick version and a wordy version =oP

A while ago, David Jaffe while speaking on his now canceled PSP game (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1511820/20051019/index.jhtml?headlines=true) “Heartland”, asked the question, “Can a video game address political views and still be fun and still be commercial and compelling?" Personally I feel that games should be severed from politics. Not only would games be demonized for mature content, but also for political content. I am not about to make an overarching statement about what games should do, but personally I have no interest in games or even art that is saturated in politics. What are your thoughts on political issues being discussed in games? Would you be interested in games that discussed politics, or do you believe games should be apolitical?”

The quick version is just that last question, “Would you be interested in games that discussed politics, or do you believe games should be apolitical?”

P.S. Wombat is a games journalist.

Granted, I am one show behind, so you may have covered this on the last live show, but it not...

You say "no" to pirated video games, etc, but you seem to have no problem downloading "free" TV shows or movies, etc. I am missing something here???

Hey Wombat and Cheapy,

Just listened to episode #80 and both of you seemed to believe that the reason Manhunt 2 was slammed with an AO rating was because of violence. While it's very possible that violence played a factor in the games rating I have an alternative theory as to what the ESRB found to be "objectionable content".

Let look back at GTA: San Andreas. It garnered an M rating as we all know but what was it that pushed that title (and politicians) over the edge? Was it the car jacking and running people over? No. The thug style violence that romanticized the gang member lifestyle? No. Obviously it must have been the fact that you could wipe out a ton of police officers with a machine gun, right? Nope. It was the SEX!

It wasn't until Hot Coffee came out that people really got all up in arms. O'no! Little Johny might see people having sex, we can't let that happen! O'sure he can play out his fantasy of killing hundreds of people needlessly at random but heaven forbid he should see sex in a game.

So my take on the AO rating for Manhunt 2 is that there is likely some level of sexual activity in the game, be it hetero or otherwise. For whatever reason people are more worried about sex in media than violence and I have a strong feeling that this is yet another case of that social anxiety.

What do ya'll think? Keep up the great work!

To be fair about the R4 being sold at that store, it 'can' be used for piracy. It can also be used to play homebrew.

Most people are going to use it for piracy, but if you're looking for an escape route on the entire "I backed a store that sells flashcarts" thing, that's a winner. The homebrew scene gets really ticked when people assume that everybody who buys a flash cart is a pirate.

Cheapy, I have a Japan related question.

You talk about going to the movie theater on the CAGcast and I wanted to know how the language difference works. Is the movie in English with Japanese subtitles? Or is the movie dubbed with English sibtitles? Or do you need special headphones to hear it in Englsh?

Also, can you drink alchohol in the movie theater?

Keep up the great work on the CAGcast Cheapy and Wombat, you make commuting fun...at least one day a week lol.

Cheapy (and Wombat),

I'm completely stumped as far as how VGCentral.com is the target of some wrath among the CAGs. I've been looking at the retro stuff (and there's quite a bit of that, too) and I'm asking you this: How does VGCentral HURT the CAGs? It may be a "modchip store", but what I'm seeing is a whole helluva lot of retro stuff. If you want a modchip store, just don't go to the obvious modchip stores. But VGCentral looks to have lots and lots of retro stuff. I'm in hog heaven with all the retro stuff!!

Definitive statement time:

Cheapy and Wombat -- What would each of you say is the one single gaming platform (console or portable, doesn't matter) that you have had the best overall experience with, over your entire lives as gamers? No categories, qualifiers or conditions; I'm talking about ONE system to rule them all. The best system ever...?

(No need to read this part "on the air" but... my pick is actually the DS. I've been a gamer since the NES so I've seen some good shit in my day, but with the DS game library getting deeper by the month, full backwards compatibility with GBA games, no region lock, online multiplayer, unmatched accessibility, a wealth of innovative oddball titles that usually don't make it out of Japan, and the ability to have this whole experience while sitting under a tree, I think it pretty much destroys everything else. Phantom Hourglass can only widen the gulf.) Does this make me a Nintendo fanboy? Probably.

First of all I want to say good job, I listen to each podcast on Itunes as they come out.

Now my quesiton:

Cheapy just purchased a Macbook a couple weeks ago. I also just purchased one at the begining of the week, and I am interested in doing some light gaming. So far I have downloaded 2 demos, Prey and Doom 3, and they ran like crap. I know this is because of both the lack of a Universal Binary for doom 3, and that both games don't like the Intel GMA 950 graphics chip inside the Macbook.

Do you see that the lack of consistant standards has doomed the pc and mac game market, due to the fact that you can't know if a game will run even if it meets the standards printed on the retail box?

(Most people I know from work just know their computer is an apple, dell, gateway etc, without knowing how much memory and type of graphics, if any, are installed.)

Oh, and and do you know of any good games that will run on a Macbook? FPS games are my prefered choice.

Thank you in advance for any insight or information you can offer.

More of a YMIJ question, but anyway..
I saw some odd Japanese desserts or "treats" mentioned on BoingBoing, and was wondering if you'd tried any of these in particular:

and also what other types of "odd" foods are out there? The Pepsi Cucumber Ice seemed fairly random, anything else?
