Hello CheapyD and Wombat, I’ve been listening to this show for a while and just now decided to sign up. I have 2 questions for you. The first one is for Wombat. This may have been asked before but I know that you are a big comic book fan and I was just wondering if you would be attending this year’s Comic Con. My other question is for both of you. In light of all this Manhunt 2 controversy what do you think is the most controversial game of all time?

Hey guys,
What is your take on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision lifting the ban on price floors? It could have a profound effect on the deals and general pricing practices many of us have come to take for granted. I think this would be a perfect topic for discussion on the show. It would be especially neat if you could recruit a legal expert and an economist to break the issue down and give us some perspective.
See this thread for CAG discussion on the subject to this point:

hey guys, i was just wondering, do you ever feel like you have too many games you want to play in one day? For me, having a 360, PS3, Wii and DS, Ill usually feel like playing so many different games, I just have to choose what I want to play the most or play a lil bit of each. Just curious if this happens to you guys, especially when alot of games come out at once.

Hi Cheapy and Wombat
After listening to Wombat's woes on the latest CAGcast, I thougth I'd tell my most recent 360 fiasco.
I got the 3 red rings the first week of May. Since my 360 was 2 months out of warranty, I paid the $140 for the extra year of repair. After about 3 weeks I recieved my console back, just before Memorial Day weekend. I didn't play at all over the holiday, but within 2 weeks I had the red rings again. Because of a family emergency I wasn't able to call until June 6 for a new coffin. As of writing this, my 360 still has not been shipped out 1 month later. If all goes well I'll have it back just under 5 weeks. I have spent at least 4 hours on the phone dealing with support. One day alone was over an hour. Since the beginning of May I have had a working console less than 2 weeks.
My question is for Wombat. Since you seem to have a good grasp of corporate America, how do you think M$ is going to eventually address this problem. What do the two of you think they should do?
Thanks

Can you wheedle ONE answer for me from Microsoft at E3? I know I'm not alone in wanting an answer...
Here's the deal: like a good consumer I bought 2 years of extended warranty through MS when I bought my console back in October of '06. Now that all 360's will have 3 years of warranty, I don't really see myself needing the additional 2 years bringing me up to a 5-year warranty. Will MS give me the $50 back that I originally paid for my additional 2 years of warranty?
If not, how about a newly published free first-party released game instead? Don't want to give away a game I'm sure to buy which will drop to a $30 retail price point in 18 months? How about you just give me 4000 MS points? That's $50, right?
Remember when I bought my 360, I was extending the warranty from 90 days to 2 years and 90 days. Now I've got more than double that warranty--it's more than a CAG needs.
Peter Moore studiously ducked this issue over at 1up:
1UP: The people who already purchased an extended warranty, what does this mean for them?
I don't know about that. A lot of the extended warranties are retailer-oriented, so our point of view is that if you bought a box, you have a three year warranty effective today. We need to be able to take care of people who have paid us for repairs that have been out of warranty against this problem, so we're going to busily start sending checks out to those people again.

Hey Wombat,
As a former comic book reader who also lives in New York, I found myself not knowing what to do with all my comics as space is precious, but throwing them out felt like a waste too. I was wondering how you handle it. I've just ended up walking into Forbidden Planet about once a month and flipping through some issues.

OBLIGATORY QUESTION WARNING:
CheapyD and Wombat, do you guys think that the Playstation 3's "rumored" price drop will make a difference in the console wars at this point with Sony's ever-decreasing exclusives? And can you read this question as Barry White Cheapy?
Cursor
07-08-2007, 06:13 AM
Hey guys--another question came to mind:
In light of Sony recently snubbing Cheapy by not inviting him to the 'exclusive' Killzone party, isn't there some kind of karmic justice at work in the world when cheapassgamer.com is the conduit through which Sony's $100 price drop bombshell was spoiled?
I think Sony had better start treating you two and the CAG community right, or there will be hell to pay with the forces that rule the universe.
Your thoughts?
Cheapy--when you're on Bloomberg again, that US$1,050,000,000 to 1,150,000,000 charge that MS took amounts to $90-$100 per xbox sold to date assuming 11,600,000 sold. That is a huge loss. Can Sony compete with Microsoft's deep pockets in the long run? 3-4 years from now when the next Xbox is being launched and the PS3 is finally hitting its stride, won't the PS3 be a generation behind? You can bet that MS won't ship shitty hardware for the 360's successor.

Dear Cheapy and Wombat,
So Sony's PS3 price cut is real, and with this news hitting at the same time that Microsoft is admiting to technical problems with every Xbox 360 released until recently, do you think that the tide is turning? I myself still have no reason to buy a PS3, but I'm starting to think about it, and here is why -
* Bluray seems to slowly but surely be pulling ahead of HD-DVD. Again, I'm not buying yet, but if Bluray wins, that almost guarantees that I'll be picking up a PS3. Multiple PS3s - one for me, and one for my family.
* The build quality of the PS3 seems far better than previous Sony products. The PS1 and PS2, first generation, were built to die. I can't say I feel the same way about the release model PS3. Overall, the hardware is done right, and no obvious defects grab my attention.
* Hardware-wise, the PS3 is superior to the Xbox 360. The Cell is really amazing, and blows away the performance of the PowerPC chips the 360 is using. While there is the issue of 'coding for the processor', when it comes down to raw power, the PS3 is the clear winner.
* Free online play. If Sony gets their act together, this is a big reason to buy the PS3.
* PS2 compatibility and upscaling. I love my PS2 and many games on my PS2. It's tempting to have a console that will play my old PS2 games and upscale them, while at the same time, play current-generation games.
* Showing my geeky side here, but I love that Sony allows me to run Linux on my PS3 without modifications.
I guess the only thing missing from the equation are the games. This E3 will let us know if Sony has used some black magic on that front. Remember that Xbox 360 has failed in Japan, and given the limited hardware on the Wii, many if not all traditional gaming titles will end up on the PS3.
One final note, I don't think this will affect Nintendo at all. They've made the right choice going for their own market.

This is more for Wombat, but I'd like Cheapy's opinion as well:
I know we've seen with Activison that they've met with much success re-releasing Gold Editions and 2K has done the same with the Elder Scrolls, but what do you think of the recently announced GOTY edition of Oblivion, do you find this fair to purchasers of the Shivering Isles expansion such as yourself Wombat? I know I was planning to purchase it come August to hold me over until Halo 3, but now, I'm selling off my Collector's Edition copy because frankly, it will be cheaper for me to do so, and then buy the GOTY when it comes out. With Shivering Isles at $30, and this game at $50 at release it seems (CAG's are sur eto fin d it cheaper), what is the incentive to purchase it online? Having to have it load up each time? Taking up hard-drive space? It just seems like a huge f-you to their fans, especially those who purchased the PS3 version and don't even have the option to download the Isles.
Feel free to cut this down for the cast, I just wanted to give you some background to work with.

In your latest CAGcast, Cheapy reported that Wii outsells PS3 6 to 1 in Japan. Wombat's response was that it's only 2.5 to 1 because of the cost difference of the systems.
Doesn't that silly mammal know it's all about hardware penetration to sell software? That means Wii has 6x's as many people to sell games to! In short: That's a MASSIVE advantage. Who gives a wombat's furry duff if it costs less to buy the hardware?

And people have more money to buy other things, $250.00 more which can go towards games, accesories, etc. all of which makes Nintendo's pockets happy.

Hello Cheapy and Wombat, love the show and digg it every week. I am conflicted and need guidance on a gaming purchase. Recently the PS3 price lowered down to 499.99, and I thought “wow that is pretty cheap for a blue ray player.” But then what really tugged at my cheap heart was a deal that is very hard to pass up. Gamestop and Gamecrazy have lowered the price of their used 20gb model, and I do mean used because sony is no longer producing them. The 20gb model is selling at Gamecrazy for 340.00 and at Gamestop for 370.00. Do you guys feel this is a good deal, should I go for this and buy the 20gb model at this low price or should I wait a little while and buy the 60gb, or should I hold off all together and not buy one at all this year? I have my router in my entertainment center so I have no need for the Wifi capabilities and the card reader is of no interest to me, but I do miss out on the 5 blueray titles for free from sony, or if I purchase the PS3 will it end up like my Wii, collecting dust and not being played because of lack of solid titles. Please help.

Hey Wombat and Cheapy,
I enjoyed the Wii version of RE4 but so much of what seems to be on the Wii are party and mini game collections, which don't appeal to me. Not to mention only one or two first party titles look appealing right now. As someone who prefers the duel joystick control scheme, can either of you give me some reasons why I should be excited for the future of the Wii, and more importantly why should I not sell my Wii?

Let's get some E3 specific questions for our e3 Wrap up show!
Compared to previous year's shows, do you think E3 was better this year now that its trimmed down signifcantly and targeted specifically to industry insiders as opposed to years past when it was becoming a media and marketing spectacle open to many? What improvements compared to previous years did you see this year in how the show is handled and what set backs or negatives did you see?
Also, we often hear of the games and consoles at E3 but was there any peripheral devices, accessories, or perhaps unusual items such as toys, that suprised you or caught your attention?

Let's get some E3 specific questions for our e3 Wrap up show! Other than Mass Effect, I was most excited about Brothers in Arms - Hell's Highway. The destruction of surroundings coupled with the beautiful graphics will slot nicely into the already-established squad gameplay mechanic/story-telling/musical score that we already know and love to make what I feel could be one of the most accomplished WWII shooters ever.
That said, do you guys feel that the abundance of WWII games makes journalists almost ignore any WWII titles at shows such as E3? They must be so sick of them so it's understandable I suppose, but is it really fair?
I just think no matter how good these games are, they could be neglected by jaded journalists, not receive any special coverage and slip under the radar.
I guess my real question is - do journalists have too much of a say in what is consumed by the gaming audience? Not everyone scours the net for every scrap of info like we do and the fact that games don't make it on to magazine-fronts and game site front pages could really affect their sales. It could be the fatal flaw in having full-time gaming journalists, as opposed to journalists who occasionally write about games - they can in some ways be bored of the industry and as such are always looking the next new, fresh thing. Which is all well and good except that perfectly good "traditional" games could get left out in the cold.

Also, if you didn't have a Wii, PS3 or 360, and you could only get one of the 3, which one would you get based on what you saw at this year's E3?
What was the press reaction to all the back and forth surrounding the PS3 price drop?
What kind of schwag did you get?
What do you think of the future of E3 and is there a place for a large consumer video game expo a la Comicon?

I heard from someone on the IGN boards who went to E3 that the ESA was acting like Nazi's about everything related to the show in terms of what could/couldn't be shown. This E3 question is for both CheapyD and Wombat (who I realize was absent.)
After discussing the show between yourselves, do you think CheapyD learned more from going to the shows, or Wombat from just reading all the websites and watching the trailers online? Obviously the experience of being there is more comforting than a website, but with time as a small commodity it's obvious you couldn't visit everything you wanted to.
And yes, I realize you could easily read the websites too, Cheapy, but my real question is, is going to the show for information as big a part of it as just the experience?

Hey Cheapy,
I have some bones to pick with you guys.
Those Youtube E3 wrap ups seem kinda selfish.
You get to demo all these games, meet with developers and meet all the guys from the other sites and all we get is a bald head white guy doing a jet-lagged, marijuana-induced wrap up.
You could have video taped your e3 experience or you could have set up a temporary E3 blog full of pictures and video.
Also, How can you say "Doing the same thing is OK, if you do it right." then say Ratchet & Clank for the PS3 looks like the same thing with better graphics?
And Wombat, Why didn't you watch the Big 3 press conferences? You're on a video game podcast and you have no input on a huge media event. Shame on you.

As a kind of change of pace, I wanted to ask CheapyD a quick question about Japan. I understand that Manga is basically as popular in Japan as Magazines or newspapers here, but is there a market in Japan for American comic books? Cheapy, I just read your "Me Too" article on the front page and im baffled at how you can say that Nintendo won best in show. Sure they are making great progress for the gaming industry as a whole, but for a company to boast so much about its success and then turn around and give us little more than the Balance Board is slightly ironic. We all know Nintendo's track record on gimicky peripherals and I don't see how 6 months after its release the Balance Board will be any different. What is your reasoning behind giving Nintendo best in show when they release things like this?
I was really hoping that this year's E3 would give me a good reason to want to stand in lines to buy a wii but WiiFit makes me want to WiiSit on my couch and play more 360. Im waiting for Nintendo to just cut the bullshit and finally come out with the WiiBong, a peripheral that is guaranteed to be a hit. (I'll resist the urge to say what goes in the WiiBong.)
P.S.: Wombat, I'm going to New York City for a few days in mid August and was wondering if there are any game related places that would be worth checking out other than the Nintendo World Store?
CheapYD!!! Please try to get into the METAL GEAR SOLID ONLINE beta!
It's only in Japan and only 3,000 people get to do it. I'm not sure if its like...3,000 users online at once, or only 3,000 people can sign up.
The beta test will run from August 20 through September 3.
Try to get into it, PLZ!!!
I would love to hear your impressions about it.

This year's E3 sucked when it came to news. My theory is that the industry now releases bits of news throughout the year now instead of blowing their collective wad at E3 like years past. Agree or disagree?

Cheapy and Wombat, with the Microsoft’s game division posting big losses, Sony's difficulties with moving consoles and the Wii's lack of games and poor software sales, despite good hardware sales, do you feel this has been a bad year for gaming? Are we heading for another market crash, like the one that happened in 1983? What is your opinion on the state of gaming thus far? If you think we're all headed for certain DOOM, then what can the industry do to align itself with the path of victory! (?)

It seems like almost all of the games at E3 for XBOX 360 and PS3 have great graphics, especially the FPS. Do you think this is the case and is it all about the gameplay in this generation?
Also, do you think there are too many FPS and what can one game do from another to differentiate itself?
Hey Cheapy, congrats on the future addition! Just curious if you and Mrs. Cheapy have come up with any name ideas for the new boy. Can we expect the baby to be named CheapyD Jr.? Has the line between third person and first person disappeared?
The XBOX platform is often criticized because of the abundance of first person shooters. But if you look at games for the PS3 and 360 most of the really big titles are now a hybrid of first and third person. Titles like Mass Effect, UT3, R6:VEGAS, MGS4 and even Halo 3 with the vehicles and larger weapons. All these games present a merging together of the two genres.
Is this just because of the extra power available in the PS3 and 360? Or is using this new hybrid gameplay perspective better than choosing one over the other?

Hello I enjoyed this last show but thought I would bring up a couple of things.
The 360 can also do a custom background it uses the same image for all tabs but you can use whatever picture you like just go under the media tab and pictures and after you select the location of the file, media server or memory stick just highlight the image you want to use and press X to set as back ground.
Also on Silcon Knight they moved off the Unreal Engine cause it wasnt working out what we saw this E3 was on their engine they just want their money back cause they had to do it themselves and it has caused them horrible delays. So cant totally blame them on the lawsuit even if they sound whiny from time to time.
People were out in force on the MS Points deal this morning they were out but I have hope of a restock on Wednesday crossing fingers or maybe time to try a price match. Keep up the good work.
I forgot you had (Maurice?) the play-asia guy over for your party...did he mention anything about the new side-scrolling shmup they are helping to produce? The screens are looking nice so far...

Cheapy and Wombat,
What are your thoughts on downloadable games/marketplaces and gift giving.
I have found that parents, loved ones, etc are less likely to give you a gift of MS or Wii points, etc than they are to purchase a game as a gift.
Example, Super Mario World on the VC is high on my list, but chances are my wife, etc will never pick it up for me because (i) she won't just stumble across it while out shopping, and (ii) I think a lot of people feel like giving someone a gift card or point card is not as fun or "sexy" as giving them a "real gift."
With Sony doing higher priced games through the download service, etc, I wonder how this will change holiday shopping sales, etc.
PS - Wombat, I am in San Diego, the con was awesome...next year give me a heads up and be sure to head west...

Is retail morality declining?
Let me explain. Recently Circuit City layed off thousands of their higher payed employees, and took aboard lower wage replacements.
This past week we witnessed the sale on points cards at CC. At least 12 stores in the Southern California region did not have point card on the store opening sunday morning (maybe speedy's leaks have something to do with this.) Most weren't offering rainchecks.
How can a store have a huge sale and not have the inventory to match a minimal amount of demand? Do you think the top brass cares? Has the consumer's mental construction of retail service been changed; I've been burned many times by Gamestop/Best Buy/ Circuit City but keep coming back.
BTW Cheapy- Thank for d/ling BSG.

Oh, and on another subject, don't you think Stardust HD should be the new standard by which downloadable games are judged? That game is so worth $10 it's ridiculous, and there are a some $10 games on Live arcade that aren't worth a steaming pile.

Hey Cheapy!
I absolutely love your new toilet video! Who would have known that taking a crap could be so rewarding. I live in New York City right now, and I know that you used to live here. My question is how would you compare your "toilet experience" in New York and Tokyo. I know my toilet, and just about everyone else's I know in New York City, is the absolute worst toilet that a person could possibly imagine. You litterally have to hold the handle down for a minute before the water slowly drains, and then drips onto the floor from the pipe. Perhaps Wombat could make his own toilet youtube video for comparison. Anyway, keep up the good work on the Cagcast, and thanks for adding me to your PS3 friends list!

Cheapy and Wombat, you guys rock! I'm new to both the CAG community and podcasts in general, but ever since my car stereo was stolen I'm stuck on my work commute with just my mp3 playing cell phone. Anyway I wanted to commend you guys on your awesome podcast. I look forward to listening every week. You really make my drive easier.
I had a thought or two about what you were saying about review scores. I really feel that review scores only hurt games. So what if a game isn't perfect? I remember back in the NES days, before reviews were everywhere, when my friends and I would play any game, 5-star or otherwise, just because we wanted to game. I've played bad games and still had a good time, and I've played "well reviewed" games that I couldn't stand (Prey, I'm looking in your direction). My point is, most games have something to offer gamers who are willing to see past a few flaws and get into the meat of a game. I hope I'm not the only CAG who feels this way. People who only want to play games that get top reviews are really nothing more than game snobs. Put down the controller and go find a wine bar, I think you'll have more fun there.
I'm done ranting. Congrats on the new edition and podcast nominations! Good luck with both!

Have you guys ever considered doing a "street interview" with the general public? Cheapy (with the help of an interpreter) could ask questions of the Japanese gaming community, like which upcoming game releases they're most looking forward to, current favorites, etc. Wombat could also represent by roaming the streets of NYC posing the same types of questions to American gamers. Both of you could record your findings and host them on YouTube, etc.

Hey there Cheapy, I'm surprised to hear that you're getting your Famitsu translations from Neogaf. I'd imagine that the price of subscription would be worth it because of the benefitial news you'd be ontop of.
It would also make for a very interesting podcast section when the magazine comes out. You could translate some news for us on the show. Also I'm completely envious that hot shots golf 5 is already out in japan! That is by far the best golf series on any system and it's not really all that arcady. It even has a great online mode with up to 8 players this time around. I really recommend that you get it for it should make owning a ps3 more worthwhile.

Feel free to cut this down for the cast, I just wanted to give you some background to work with.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3-gets-shivering-isles/oblivion-game-of-the-year-edition-276273.php
Figure I'll post this once more and see, since I think by posting it right after the CAGcast was posted, it ended up getting missed in the shuffle during the CAgcast the week after.
Also, a second question. Have you ever played a game you wouldn't consider to be that "good" from a technical standpoint, yet ended up being a great time anyway, like all the pieces aren't great, but somehow come together as a great package? I'm currently playing through Overlord, and even though some of the AI is horrendous, and the tasks can be pretty repetitive, along with the "puzzles" not being all that difficult, I'd still rate it as one of the funnest experiences the 360 has to offer. The minions available to do your bidding just somehow make the game a complete joy. Have any games ever done that for you?

Cheapy and Wombat:
What game or games have convinced you to buy a console, if any? Myself? I bought an Xbox just to play Halo 1 and 2, Pokemon Pearl was enough to make me re-buy a DS, and GRAW was the tipping point for me to buy a 360. Also, if you don't, do you typically just buy a console, regardless of games lineup, at launch whenever you can because you're just THAT hardcore...and that fucking loaded (Cheapy)

In light of the recent price drop and the fact that I would like hardware based backwords compatibility, I expect to be buying a ps3 in the near future. Could you two please bring me up to speed on what to expect from the PSN with regards to friends lists (I'm not sure I understand if they are game specific) and how you feel about that whole online system? What parts of the online experience do think are done much better on the PS3? What things frustrate you when compared to the competition?
Thanks, keep up the great work.

Hey Wombat, this is pretty much all you since Cheapy doesn't seem to have this problem with this ps3. I live in an apartment complex that's basically for all the people at the college I go to. I have a pretty half assed connection and things time out a lot on my pc but my 360 is connected all the time and never disconnects. But my ps3 can't stay connected to the internet for more than 15 minutes. Do you get an error code or anything or does it just sign you out?
Sorry, I forget if this was asked already, but here goes:
Now that you and Wombat both have a 360 and PS3, how do you decide which version of a multi-platform game to get?
And along those lines:
How much do you guys value achievements and XBL interface/functionality? What do you think about the upcoming PSN "gamerscore" system?
And what's the deal with the Amazon 360 Rock Band Special Edition--is it wired guitar or wireless guitar?!? I think that's my only quibble about getting the 360 version over the PS3 version right now...

This is actually a question from Mrs. Tybee to Mrs. Cheapy.
My wife and I read an article in the NY Times today about the abyssmal treatment of professional women in Japan, and how it's virtually impossible for a woman there to raise a child and stay in the workforce. We had no idea it was that bad.
Granted, you're not the traditional Japanese salaryman and will be taking on the full-time father role, so your situation is a bit more unique, but is Mrs. Cheapy concerned about the effect having a child will have on her career?

I read on the front page of the New York Times that women have a tough time working in Japan and climbing their way up the corporate ladder, especially if they have a child. The article says for anyone to stay in management they have to work almost 15 hour days. Raising a family and working 15 hour days is not possible, so they lose their positions and future promotions. Is this true, has your wife raised any concerns that she will lose her position or her stature in the place she works by having your little cheapy jr, or does she not have to worry because you are going to be the mother?

With EA recently announcing more titles online being shut down, I'm curious about what you think of this with regards to a game like Rock Band they're publishing. When people invest something like $200, plus paying out the ass I'm sure for downloadable songs, the possibility of the online being shut down down the line. It seems the online is a huge part of the package here, and with that kind of investment, that possibility is causing me to rethink purchasing. The same can be said for Army of Two, another EA game with a huge online emphasis.

I've been holding out on getting a new system for a while now. At first I was set on a 360, but now I'm not so sure. Every CAGcast I hear about continuing 360 hardware problems and untouched Wiis. But I also hear about how much Wombat enjoys his PS3, and the lineup is becoming increasingly attractive as well.
Considering that I've never experienced XBOX Live and don't wish to pay for an online service, the price of games is not a concern for me as I get most of them as gifts, and 2 or 3 games can last me an entire year, can either of you think of any reason I shouldn't pick up a PS3 when I'm ready to drop the cash?
Oh and CheapyD, you gotta start paying Wombat. When you're busy teaching little CheapyB how to strafe you're gonna need Wombat to pick up the slack on the CAGcast. Think of the children Cheapy. Think of the Children.

Hey Cheapy, have you gotten your new Wii yet? If so, what do you think of the new firmwear killing the use of the import-enabling FreeLoader? It seems to me that one of the reasons of the GTA 4 delay was because Rockstar did not finish the PS3 version. Yet they make it look like the 360 version is almost done. Do you think that Rockstar made the right move by delaying BOTH versions and angering the 360 fans, or should they have released the 360 version on time and anger PS3 fans?

CheapyD,
I assume you have your new Wii. ( I saw 2 in the towel trick video. )
I have a quick opinion to fly by you guys. I've noticed from listening to recent Podcasts that Bioshock just doesn't seem to be registering on your radar like I think it should. At least, the hype-wagon doesn't seem too excited about it. I attribute this to the fact that both you and Wombat don't really have a history in PC gaming. Had you that history, you'd know about the gem that is System Shock 2, and you'd know why you should be extremely excited about Bioshock.
Anyhow, get excited! Bioshock, the game we've been waiting for from the System Shock team, is finally coming out! If it lives up to the rest of the franchise, prepare to be amazed.
Also, I didn't know what the towel trick was until I saw that video. Don't take this the wrong way, but its kind of pathetic. Furthermore, I'm sure the PR folks at Microsoft would rather replace your Xbox 360 for free than for something like that video to show up on Digg. Anyone considering an Xbox 360 gets something to watch that might persuade them not to.
Kudos, Cheapy for keeping the pressure on MS to fix the problem.
As always, I think you need a host that adds the PC side of gaming to your podcast. Later :)

I think it'd be great if Cheapy would slow down the show every once in a while and allow Wombat (or even himself) to breakdown a topic without the 'let's move on' 15 seconds into the subject. When Cheapy says 'we've talked enough about this' I almost always think "NO! We haven't!" Let the topics go where they may.
To this end:
1. Wombat (and/or Cheapy)- Irrational Games (the maker of Bioshock) was just 'absorbed' by 2K and will no longer be designing or publishing games under that moniker. What do you think the impact is of a well respected studio (previously Looking Glass) being gobbled up and retitled something generic like 2K Boston? Does the studio that develops the game matter to the non-enthusiast?
2. Wombat (and/Cheapy) We always look back with nostalgic hindsight on a certain era or year of gaming being extraordinary. With a bevvy of AAA titles coming out in the next 3 months, do you think that we as gamers will look back on fall of 07 as one of those golden ages? When are some other golden ages in your mind?

Hey there,
Okay, I'm finally planning on 'jumping in' and getting an Xbox 360 now that the price has dropped, and they're supposedly putting 65nm chips in the systems.
If I go to the store to buy a 360, how can I ensure I get one with the smaller chips? I'm pretty sure you can see the serial number on the system before you buy it, so are there any specific markers or dates on the hardware or packaging that will give it away?
Or does the elite SKU already have all the latest hardware revisions? What's the best way to walk into a Best Buy and ensure that you get a 360 with the latest bells and whistles (i.e., not overheating and breaking)...and how do you confirm that you did?

hey cheapster and wombat,
my girlfriend and I are going to Japan in september and we're planning on checking out the Tokyo Game Show and I wondered if you had any advice for us. What's the best plan of attack to check out the coolest games? Is it so insanely crowded that we'll be lucky to see anything at all? do we have to get there super early? Basically, what can we expect?
thanks for the help, if I see your bald head towering over the crowd when I'm there I'll be sure to say "hi"!

Hey Cheapy and Wombat. I have a suggestion on the advertisement situation. I think that when you have sponsors you should do it the way Diggnation does. With pre-recorded commercials done by the hosts at the beginning of the show, then the intro music and the show. Just an idea.

[Wombat, You noted Halo 3 just became your most anticipated game after playing it recently. Do you think Halo 3 will beat COD4 as multiplayer game of the year?
Do either of you plan to participate in the Call Of Duty 4 Beta?
Comment about episode #85 (Halo 3 vehicles capacity)
I wanted to make the comment while playing the Beta my brother & I found we could actually carry an extra player by having them balance themselves on the vehicle without falling off. We were doing it because you have to drop certain weapons (missle launcher, turret gun, dual machine guns, grenades, & energy drain, the spartan laser when hiting RB to get in a vehicle.
On Valhalla as soon as the match started I would rush to the bottom of the base and grab the missle launcher, then I would have my brother waiting outside in/on a vehicle. I then jumped on top so he could take me around the stage. He had to drive alittle slower on the mongoose to keep from throwing me off. I would stand on the warthog with the missle launcher, once I ran out of ammo, I dropped the missle launcher, and went straight to it's mounted turret on the back.
During capture the flag on Valhalla we would stand freely on the mongoose or warthog, then would jump the rocks outside the enemy base and the person standing could jump with the momentum throwing them inside the base near the flag grabbing it and then dashing quickly to the man cannon.

What's the deal with Wombats obsession with "Physical Media"? Every time they talk about downloads he mentions wanting to have it on a disk. Between XBL and Steam I've resigned my need for disks. I won't ever loose a game again.
Unless Steam or XBL goes away and if that happens I think we've all got bigger problems. I think the convenience outweighs any downsides.

Has microsoft's big recall made them stingy with the "apologetic gifts" for broken 360 owners?
My 4th 360 just red ringed today and during the return process, the customer service person elevated my claim to a supervisor. The supervisor was very agitated with me and became very angry when I asked him if this problem would ever be completely resolved. (Why am I getting yelled at when they can't get their outsourced labor to properly fix their shitty machine?) I called him on it in the hopes to get some compensation, but he just gave me a confirmation # and hung up.
I remember the days when a second return resulted in you getting something from microsoft, but now I wonder if their extended warranty has made them tighten their budgets elsewhere? They are already cutting corners on the shipping as they are sending me a 7 day Fedex coffin instead of a 3-day UPS one.
Keep up the good work!

Greetings Cheapy and Wombat,
While the convenience of downloading works great for small things like Virtual Console and X-Box Live, the physical property itself is very important for gamers who would at least feel comfortable with the options of returning, trading in, or e-baying a game.
As a poor college student, I couldn't justify a lot of my gaming purchases without knowing that the game still had value. For instance, many of my Nintendo DS games retail for close to their full price years after their release. If all games had to be downloaded, then my collection would be worthless.
Thanks guys, love the show.

hey wombat and cheapy
how long must we wait until online gaming offers matches against gamers of equal or near equal rating.
online gaming, for now, is just for the best of the best. there is no reason why some less expierenced gamers shouldn't be able to compete. you should always be able to play against players with a similar rating.
i'd also like to see your rating not just be based upon your wins and losses. but it would take into account the rating of your opponent. so if you beat someone far better then you, your rating should go up a lot. and if you beat someone far worse then you, your rating will only go up a little. online chess has been doing this for years.
and how hard would it be to give a loss to gamers who disconnect. i think the infancy stage of online gaming is over. it's time to start expecting more.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat, did you see this article in the Guardian about xbox360 failures?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/aug/17/comment.games?gusrc=rss&feed=technology
It brings up an excellent point that I haven't heard anyone discuss: what the hell is the actual problem with 360s. Remember Peter Moore's interviews before he left Msoft? Remember how evasive he was? My question is, given that the internet is the greatest conglomoration of human knowledge and collaboration in history, why hasn't someone cracked this? People can come up a way to solve a Rubik's cube in 26 moves or less (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/aug/17/2)and break DRMs, but no one can even identify the problem in a 360, much less fix it. Do you know anyone who actually knows exactly why 360s fail so much, or have any theories?
Hey guys,
I was playing pokemon on my flight back to Miami yesterday when the touchpad on my DS lite started to act up on me. I wasn't registering anything and it would go to a part of the menu on its own. my wife told me she had the same problem when she was playing earlier.
the touchpad is working fine now that I am on the ground.

Game graphics getting TOO good?:
the graphics on our 3rd gen system is just amazing. And with new developments in gaming industry that seems to be happening basically everyday, game graphics are getting drastically getting better. So i am thinking maybe the next gen or the system after that will have graphics so advance, that the game graphics will look like real life. What i am curious about this is how this would effect ESRB ratings and the gaming industry. For example gears of war is a pretty bloody game. it has got a rating of M for mature. But now lets up the graphics of gears of war to the point where it looks so realistic that it actually looks like an actual person getting sawed. This surely will boost up the ratings to an A for adult. And surely any T for teen rated action games will be boosted to a M for mature with the boost of graphics. Now putting all these speculations together with the fact that no console game companies are willing to let someone publish a A for adult rated games on there console makes me wonder.. will there be a time in gaming history where developers will have to actually force down the graphics for there games.. or at least when it concerns action games? Will console companies allow A for adult games into there line up? what are your thoughts on this?
kind of a lonnnnnnnng question i know.. but i hope you found it interesting. keep up the good work cagcast.

The one thing that people seem to overlook in the download vs physical media debate, is they're taking for granted that the servers to download the games or the system they download them on will be around for years.
I can bring out my SNES any time I want to play Kirby's Dreamcourse. I may only do it once a year or so, but so long as I can find a SNES... I can play it.
My virtual console version will only be 'good' so long as Nintendo allows me to download it, or as long as my current Wii lives. The day both of those stop servicing, that game is lost to me until I buy it again.
The lifespan of physical media (which, like anything in the universe) is finite, but will probably outlast the service offered by download servers.
Downloading a game is not the same as 'owning' a game. It just isn't.
It's something I 'own' so long as someone else lets me.

First time poster,
I have been listening to the show for about a year now and I just love it, if I actually used iTunes I would have written a review already.
My question for you Cheapy and Wombat, is regarding the state of the new 360 that is to be released very soon. I know the topic has been touched upon a couple times and it has been discussed in various forum threads. We all know that the new 360 is being developed with a new CPU, possibly a more efficient GPU, HDMI, and new color schemes including the new Halo 3 Special Edition console.
*At this rate with so many different consoles released for the 360 would you be surprised to see a 360 with an HD-DVD drive included within the next year?
There has been a drop in prices for the HD-DVD addon, perhaps this is foreshadowing for what's to come in the near future.

Can you disable certain ads on CAG from your end? While browsing CAG at work, often times a "BUY SWIMSUITS NOW!" ad will be on the frontpage taking up 1/4 of my screen. While, I don't mind women in bikini outfits, my employer probably would.

Cheapy,
Just before I began typing this question the Tokyo Japan team won the International Championship at the Little League World Series and I was curious what kind of attention the Series gets internationally. I live about 5 minutes from where the games are played and have almost all my life so my view of the event is obviously skewed. Japan has been very successful over the years and I was wondering, is this a big deal over there or does it go mostly unnoticed?

I've been lurking for a while, and I don't post much, but I love your site, and your podcasts. I listen to them every week; and just to note, Wombat makes me laugh with his dry wit and quick sarcasm about everything.
My question, however, isn't so much about games, but more about the world around where you two live. I don't travel abroad much, and still have yet to ever visit New York or Japan. What sort of breakfast do you commonly eat in Japan... Is it miso and rice like I would guess it could be? And how bad is the traffic in New York, really? Is it worse than LA traffic (I live in California)?
Thanks for everything, and keep up the good work!

Hey Cheapy and Wombat,
I am just writing to tell you about similar situation to Speedy's, that I went through when I put the Elite information from Game Crazy up here on CAG, http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128115&page=2. The information then got spread on the internet to most of the big sites, digg, joystiq, kotaku, and so on.
I put my name, my store number and pretty much everything else on there because I thought I was allowed to. The reason is we are told if there is ever anything in the system we are allowed to promote it by any means possible so we can drive more sales and get more people into our stores. Well not everyone thought that way.
About two weeks later I sit down to play some Halo 2 and I get a call from my manager she says I have to be down to the store in the next 5 mins. I get there and everyone is looking at me. The manager stands up in my face and says "do you have anything to say for your self", I just look around and say, "Nope" ( I thought this meeting was about the theft that happened a few days back.)
I find out that some one at Microsoft read my thread, called the CEO of Movie Gallery, who called down the line until they got to my manager. Microsoft wanted "My head on a silver platter."
I didn't get fired but was told that I wasn't going to get the promotion I was promised 4 months ago and that the raise in minimum wage I got on January 1st, $6.85, was my raise. I was also told to remove the post that I made, I don't see how that would stop anything, and to never post on forums again, I didn't even understand what they meant by this, the made me sign a letter saying I wouldn't. I quit about a month later.
Well fast forward to a week ago, I had p reordered BioShock, awesome game I agree not a 10 but awesome, so I went in to pick it up. This is when I find out that my manager, my district manager, and the Regional manager have all been fired, right after I quit. I was in shock they could give me an exact reason but it seemed that everyone that had anything to do with what happened was gone. Now as you can see from the current state of Movie Gallery, Hollywood video, and Game Crazy things aren't going too well so they could have just been laid off due to that but you never know.
I hope this story helps.
Thanks,

I just got done reading the latest edition of PLAY magazine. The editor of the mag wrote a review of Heavenly Sword. 10. He gave it a 10. 10 out of 10. That alone raised my eyebrows. And then I flip the mag shut after reading the article and the cover is 100% devoted to the game as well. Don't get me wrong, this looks like it's going to be a good game. But after reading the review you find out that the game can be finished in 4-6 hours? Thats 10$ an hour for a game!! If Mario64 was 6 hours long would it have been a 10? Ocarina of Time? Don't think so. Unless Nintendo bankrolled'em.
Just wanted your opinion. later.

CheapyD, you should have continued Prime. It's gets way better and has some seriously kickass bosses later on. But it is a adventure game at heart and I felt the graphics were the compelling reason to explore back then. Retro seems to addressed this by making the game more of a shooter for 3, but judging by my dislike of Hunters, I'm worried. Smash Bros however is almost guarenteed to be awesome which leads me to ask you CheapyD, why the fuck did you not play the GCs best games? Congrats on CheapyChild and Wombat still needs to read Ultimate Spider-man. And can somebody send Cheapy a copy of Watchmen please?

not sure if this has been asked but...
how many games do you and wombat currently own?
Let's switch gears a bit: Cheapy, you DJ--do you like any Jpop/hip hop, and if so, what are your current favorite groups and/or songs?
Wombat, what have you been listening to, music-wise currently?

Hello Cheapy & Wombat,
My question was overlooked in the last cagcast
I am extremely interested in your thoughts of Microsoft including an HD-DVD drive in the 360 within the next year?
Microsoft has re-released the console so many times within the last two years I believe this to be extremely plausible. On another note would you guys agree that in purchasing a limited edition Halo 3 360 there would be a much higher chance in acquiring a 65nm cpu?

I heard it mentioned in the single podcast and then i have heard nothing since... unless i missed it somewhere.

Cheapy and Wombat,
Outside of these recent incidents concerning the 360 and PS3 price drops and ad postings thereof, how do you feel about the posting of ads during the holiday season? The current issue seems to be driven by MS and Sony, and the stores themselves don't seem to be concerned.
As a CAG I was very interested in planning the early morning, day-after-thanksgiving surgical strikes required to pick up many deals at places like Best Buy and Wal-mart. The ads leaked early and many of the stores struck back at the sites that posted them. It seems that the stores were very interested in preventing the ENTIRE ad from being released to the public that included such deep discounts on products. How do you feel about those who post these ads, and do you think the stores should be concerned?
Cheapy, do you read any comics or manga in Japan?
Wombat, who is the worst comic book superhero(es)?

Great podcast Cheapy and Wombat. I'm fairly new to the cagcast and i've been working my way backwards. I'm not sure if this question has been asked, but I'm not willing to find out so....:
I was just wondering how much time you spend playing games versus reading and researching games. It seems to me that the Shipwrecks are always playing some sort of random game and telling us about it; whereas, you guys seem to tell us more about rumors, ratings, etc.
Also, I just got to cagcast 84, and I have to say. If Cheapy doesn't think Wombat will be good enough to play Halo 3 co-op with him, Wombat must be woefully atrocious at the game.

Hey guys.. great show this week..
Cheapy - So that was me that you were kicking around in the dogfight the other night. How long did it take you to get used to the warhawk so that you could actually hit things besides the ground? For now I basically do nothing more than rackup the kills for the other side when I am in one of those things. Fun to fly but I need more practice.
Wombat - When are we going to see you fighting it out in Warhawk.. This is one game that everyone should own.. also when will we see the Wombat expedition to Tokyo to hang with Cheapy and cruise Akiba?
Keep up the good work. Hope to see you both in Warhawk soon.

cheapy. so what is your opinion of buying and selling on ebay.
as far as i can tell, it's the cheapest way to play video games. you get the highest dollar for selling, and the lowest while buying.
it's like renting, but you can keep the game as long as you want. and there's no charge, since you can almost always get back what you paid. and often times i make a profit.
thoughts?
Question for Cheapy:
Ever since you moved to Japan, I've thought it ironic that you're really not able to capitalize on any of the deals posted on your own site, even if you wanted to.
Although you personally don't need to worry too much about getting games cheap thanks to your affiliate programs, what would you do (or rather what would the layman cheapass) do for gaming deals in Tokyo, and what was the last gaming deal you were able to take advantage of in Japan?

Hi, guys. 3 quick questions:
First, Wombat, have you thought about what you plan to call the segment of the show in which you share your current comic picks with the rest of us CAGs? I would suggest “The Wombat Reading Room,” but that’s just one dork’s opinion.
Secondly, last week, Cheapy, you mentioned your love for mash-ups. As a fan of bootlegs myself, I wanted to ask which DJs/artists were your favorite. I like cats like Party Ben and Go Homes Productions (obviously) as well as IRN MNKY. I’ve also really started getting into DJ Earworm and A+D of late. Who are your faves.
Lastly, did either of you catch the subtle nod to CAG in Wil Wheaton’s PAX keynote address? When Wil was mentioning what types of games he enjoyed, he mentioned – if I am not completely mistaken – “Cheap Ass games.” Is Wil a closet CAG?

THAT'S IT. I CAN'T STAND IT ANY MORE!
I was going to wait to ask this but... what are your predictions for the end of the year? Who will "win" this holiday season?
Will it be the Wii with all of it's shovelware and amazing first party franchises?
Will it be the 360 with "big ass" titles like Halo 3 and Mass Effect?
Or will it be Playstation 3 with games like Warhawk and... um... multiplatform titles?
Personally I can't see anyone beating the Wii, 360 in 2nd place with all the big titles and the PS3 in a awkward 3rd place waiting for 2008.

I have been recommending CAGcast to a number of people due to the quality of production and the great chemistry of Cheapy and Wombat. With this in mind I would like to know how you make the show this successful and entertaining?
How early do you have the show outline completed?
Do you both come into the show with some general ideas on paper, or do you have that much wit and simply fly by the seat of your pants?
Finally, what advice can you give a podcasting newb?
Thank You both for one of the most charismatic shows around!

Wombat, I've had this argument w/ one of my friends for a long time and would like you to give me your opinion in on it. Batman; is he or is he not a super hero. I feel he is more of a vigilante then anything. He has better then average physical ability but that's it, just gadgets. Same w/ Green Lantern, he has a Ring which gives him power that's all. He is definetly a Hero but nothing other then the ring is super. What say you?

I love listening to you guys on my way to and from work, but listening to the CAGcast only fills up half of the week. So I need a secondary gaming podcast to tide me over. Are there any other gaming podcasts that you would recommend? (And you can't say CAG Foreplay - that's a cop out).

I don't recall the Hype Wagon being done in the CAGcast for awhile, so do you guys mind bringing it back?
Also, have either of you picked up Piyotama, the $3 puzzle game on the PSN? Do you like the chance they're taking with the pricing since it's definitely not a game many people would touch at $5 and definitely not at $10? Should Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo be more willing to take chances on the pricing of these games when they clearly aren't worth the pricing category they'd fall into?
Have either of you tried the English Folklore demo that was available last month? It has a much more substantial taste of what the game offers than the Japanese demo, so I was wondering if you guys got the chance to try it and if it's something you guys are interested in buying when it comes out in October.

Ok I just got done watching the secret life of vending machines on the food network. They had some crazy vending machines that made ice cream and hot pizza even! But what I found really interesting is that they said Japan is no.1 country for vending machines. They said there is one vending machine for every 23 people in Japan.
Are vending machines all over the place in Japan? Also what is the craziest or weirdest thing you have bought from a vending machine in Japan?

Do you agree that a $89.99 MSRP for the Wii version of Guitar Hero 3 is bullshit? Most Wii games start at $49.99, unlike 360 and PS3s $59.99, and the Wiimote should've cut costs on essential parts that are inside the attached wiimote.

CheapyD(I'd ask you Wombat but you are not a big sports fan),
A lot was made from discussions up until the releases that NCAA 08 and Madden 08 were 60 FPS on the 360 compared to 30 FPS on the PS3. My question is NHL and NBA games from EA at the same frame rates? I own both systems, I prefer the PS3 as far as it's controller scheme but would enjoy the smoother gameplay at 60 FPS. Your thoughts since NHL 08 comes out next tuesday the 11th?

CheapyD, the podcast is great but I'm kinda worried that you're selling out for commercial success. Why the sudden change of heart on games like Metroid Prime & Resistance: Fall of Man? Your 1st impressions on those games were correct, they suck. And Warhawk? $40.00 for a downloadable game with 5 levels, that's what this world had come down to? And once the gaming community turns it out you're stuck with it: there's no trading it, no re-selling it, etc...CheapyD, fix the 360 & come back home to a console for the gamers.

I think it's pretty clear how you feel about Warhawk tangible/downloadable, but what about the recent announcement of Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine getting a combo retail release (360) for the price of what Shivering Isles cost alone on XBL? I guess I'm kind of glad I waited, but now you have other players who may have bought both downloads who are stuck with it. Is this the same issue, or is there a difference?
I have to agree with the rejection of the advertisements. As much as I would like for the CAGcast to be subsidised to ensure it's survival should either Cheapy or Wombat get into financial difficulties, I would not want non-relevant advertisements distracting me from the quips and props of our Friendly Neighbourhood Wombat, and our Man in Japan. I, and many other CAGs, no doubt, would like game-based plugs and ads. Hell, why not get the US stores to advertise with you? Get commission on purchases, get paid for the ads, and stipulate in the contract that displaying their store's ads for the oncoming week is part of the pay-off.
Special offers are to get rid of large amounts of stock, so surely more custom to get rid of said stock would be appreciated, rather than sorted with a Circuit Shitty Subpoena.

Hey Cheapy and Wombat - a few quick things.
A) Instead of calling things "gay", call them "retarded". You're much less likely to meet retarded people so it doesn't matter when you use it.
B) Deducting points from a game's score for lack of online play is rubbish. First and foremost of importance is the single player experience. Did Bioshock give a satisfying experience? Apparantly so. (Haven't played it yet) Judge it by what it has, not what it doesn't have. I don't see you deducting points from Warhawk for not having a single player mode.
C) Cheapy - the fact that you can Amazon to ship games to Japan drives me shaqfuuing insane. I'm from Canada and 9 times out of 10, Amazon.ca doesn't have the games I'm looking for. Usually they simply say either Sold Out or Not Available. Amazon.com will *not* ship video games to Canada. I've been having a six month war of words with them over this. Nor will they ship games to South Korea, where I currently live. So I get screwed over on two fronts.
The fact that I can find English games in Seoul (sometimes even used!) and can't them from Amazon.com.........
Now that is retarded.

To CheapyD -
I remember you mentioning that you were a history major in college. I, too, am majoring in history, and would like to know a few things.
1) Why is it that you seem to know or exhibit very little knowledge about history in general? Particularly when Wombat owned you regarding the racial significance of the Confederate flag. I had another example, but it escapes me at the moment. That was embarassing for all those who study history :)
2) What particular era of history did you concentrate on? If it was ancient civilizations, maybe the confederate flag bit can be forgiven (probably not, though, since that's some grade school shit right there).
Thanks! I should be coming to Tokyo to visit next year, hopefully we can meet up. As someone who is almost 30 (just turned 29), I feel your pain at getting older. Happy Birthday! I will most certainly bring my love knife to Japan.

I'm a brazilian fan of your show and I recently listened to an episode where CheapyD refers to "favela" as a music style. Actually this word is the portuguese word for "slum", where very poor people live in my country. There are music styles that ar origineted from these slums (the brazilian version of funk/black music), that maybe is what Cheay was referring to.
As to my questions:
1- I'd like to buy a 360 but I agree that it's not a good time for that. There will be a good way to known for sure if the new smaller chips will be installed in my console when I buy it? After the new ships how long would you wait to see if these chips are u to the task?

Cheapy and Wombat,
What is your take on the next generation DVD format battle? I know you both have BluRay players(PS3s), do either of you have the HD DVD add on for the 360? Which do you think is better?
Also do you think we will see any type of outcome on this format war anytime soon? The more I think about it the more I think that we might not have any type of resolution until the 2008 holiday season, and maybe not even then. How do you think HD vs. BD has impacted the next gen wars and how do you think it will impact it in the future.

I've been around for a while, but not listening to the CAGcast until recently -- what do you guys use to record the show? I'm looking into getting into doing a podcast myself, and I follow some podcasts which use Skype.

I know you both play online over XBL often, do you ususally play with just friends or do you play alot in random matchmaking games? If so, do you think the microsoft Feedback system is working and worth using or is it a waste of time?
For me it seems like it is pretty similar to when I used to play Halo 2 over XBL. I can only imagine what it will be like with Halo 3 coming out...
Should we prepare for the same epithets that include racial slurs and homophobic remarks or will things imporve?

Oh cmon, seriously? You're shallow even considering the thought. Just spend the whole day with her and play all day on the 26th? Halo is still going to be there if you neglect it, however if you neglect her, she won't be there.
