That's definitely Time Lord. It probably ranks up there as one of my most disappointing presents ever. I got Time Lord and Bad Street Brawler for my birthday one year. That was probably the same year that a lot of curse words entered my vocabulary.

Alright, time for something a little special. I threw together a group of six pictures. Now, I'll be the first to admit, these should be pretty easy to get, but there's a catch. To get this one right, you not only have to name all 6 games, but give the specific theme behind all six games. Also, to clear this up ahead of time, it's not that they're all _____ games, or that I drew numbers on the pictures. It's more than that... Good luck!
Let's see:
Super Mario 2 ------- Sept. 1, 1988
Castlevania 2 ------- Nov. 1, 1988
Track and Field 2 --- Feb. 1, 1989
Zelda 2 --------------- Dec. 1, 1988
Ninja Gaiden -------- May 1, 1989
TMNT ------------------ Feb 1, 1989
Think I know where your goin with this, but my dates of release (that I have found) are not in order. Unless you thinking of the releases being on the 1st of the month.
Edit: I'm finding that various sites have different dates. These are from IGN.

You're on the right track... Here's a hint that might help. It's more about the release of something else that involves each of these games. You've got the games right. You're very close.

That's it! Between the two of you, you nailed it. It's the first year's worth of Nintendo Power covers. July/August 1989 through May/June 1990 (The TMNT cover). Hope you guys liked that one. I wanted to make a little more of a challenge. I'm going back to single shots, but let me know if you want me to come up with something like this again...

Yep, Road Runner's Death Valley Rally. I was young enough (and there was no Internet for resarching) to get sucked in by the beautiful screens on the box. The game did indeed look nice, but the road runner handled like the proverbial dead whale on roller skates. As soon as I beat it I knew I would never, ever, ever play it again so I promptly traded it back in.

Makes sense that it would be rare and expensive, considering Compile is no more. Not that I'd ever part with my copy (it is the best shooter I've ever played, though Gradius V comes darn close), but what does it go for these days, just out of curiousity?
-------DM
there's 2 copies on ebay, 1 BIN for $150, one auction starting at 99.99. You lucky bastard! How does play compared to the original? I loved the power up system in that game.

Heh, well I guess I am lucky that I have a friend in Japan and that we're both Compile fanatics; we knew about it well in advance (though not Compile's bankruptcy), so he picked us each up a copy the week it came out. Anyway, it plays a LOT like the original, but about 10 times more insane. Powerups work similarly, although you have three ships to choose from (plus the original ship!), and the ship you select affects what kind of weapons you get. It also supports two players at once, includes the old Zanac (2 or 3 modes to choose from), and has an amazing soundtrack. It will make your thumbs sore!
BTW, even if you can't afford Zanac x Zanac, there are still a few more shooters Compile worked on that did come out in the U.S. that you might not be aware of (back in the day, companies just didn't go out of their way to recognize the small guys)........
The Guardian Legend (NES)
Gun-Nac (NES)
Power Strike (Master System)
M.U.S.H.A. (Genesis)
Robo Aleste (Sega-CD)
Space Megaforce (SNES)
Blazing Lasers (TG-16)
I think that's about all of their U.S.-released shooters, but someone else chime in if I missed any.

Okay, the guy who posted the Nintendo Power cover games inspired me, so here's my twist on it. Name the games and what they have in common. Hint 1: They are all early 80's releases, but that in and of itself is not the link in this case. Hint 2: Yes, they all showed up on the Atari 2600; that's not the connection. You'll have to be pretty old-school to know what I'm talking about. I'll drop another hint if no one gets it.

I want to say The Guardian Legend, but I'm not sure if that's right.
It's not The Guardian Legend. I'm surprised no one has gotten this one yet. I thought it was a somewhat well known NES game. Maybe not that many people reached the final stage (which is shown in the screen shot). It's an unusual level compared to the rest of the game. I bet if I posted a picture from any other part of the game, someone would get it fairly quickly.

Saturday Supercade
------------------
Five segments made up this series of video game-inspired cartoons which ran
for two seasons on CBS. The first season lineup featured: "Donkey Kong,"
the adventures of a gorilla who escapes from the circus an keeps on the run
to avoid captivity; "Donkey Kong Jr.," the misadventures of Donkey Kong Jr.
and his friend, Bones, in search of Kong's missing father; "Frogger," the
story of a frog and his companions (Fanny Frog and Shelly the Turtle) as
reporters for the _Swamp Gazette_; "Pitfall," the exploits of a treasure
hunter, his niece and their cowardly pet who travel the world to unearth
lost treasures; an "Q*bert," a teenager who battles the evil Coilee Snake and his
accomplices (Viper, Ugh and Wrong Way) with the help of his girlfriend,
Q*tee.
"Frogger" and "Pitfall Harry" aired only during the first season. For the
second season, they were replaced by two new video game-derived segments:
"Space Ace," a handsome, gallant space hero who, with his lovely partner,
Kimberly, protects the heavens from the evil Commander Borf, who plots to
rule the universe; and "Kangaroo," the misadventures of three youngsters
Joey, Katy and Sindey, who run into all sorts of problems at the local zoo,
including the Monkey Biz Gang.

Yes, that's what he's *supposed* to be saying (the speech is printed onscreen as well), but it comes out sounding like "Marry" for some reason.
I could start a whole sub-thread on mangled speech in video games. My two favorite of all time that my friends and I came up with back in the day:
1) X-Men: COTA: Even though Wolverine's "Berserker Barrage!" was pretty clear, we always prefered "A 2-Car Garage!"
2) Street Fighter EX: I don't know what Guile says during his super move, but it sounded an awful lot like "I'll take you camping soon!" Definitely one of the strangest threats to ever come out of a game character's mouth.

Since apparently no one has played this, it's a game called Armor Ambush.
It's a bit like combat, but each player starts with 25 tanks, and you control 2 tanks on each board. So it's a real action/strategy on trying to take out the other guy's tanks as you switch your control back and forth between your two tanks. Whichever one you aren't currently controlling is a sitting target. Sooooo much fun. The game ends when someone gets down to zero.

Drat. I recognized the text that was used, not to mention there was a bi plane flying sequence in the game at some point in time. Also, as an aside, my Uncle gave me Indiana Jones and the last crusade. Of course, it wasn't a few years ago, but more like a decade ago or more when it actually came out ;)

I guess it's technically right, though I don't think it says "Might and Magic" anywhere on the Genesis cart -- the version the shot is from. Did you know 3DO updated the game and released it on PS2? It's probably my favorite 3DO game, which isn't saying much. But I love it on Genesis, and it's the first tactical RPG I fell in love with (even though I played Military Madness first).

Ok, I've been inspired by the themed screenshot challenges some of you guys have posted, so here's the product of my boredom this evening. I have no idea if this will be a piece of cake, or if no one will know what the hell I'm talking about.
Each game is linked in some way to the one immediately above or below it. You can therefore establish a relational path from game #1 to game #4. This path can be created via two possible branches, a or b, in other words, [1 - 2a - 3a - 4] or [1 - 2b - 3b - 4]. Correctly identify the six games and the relationships that I have defined.

3a. X-men Mutant Apocalypse
(I have no idea... 80's movies... and x-men, haha.)Yep, correctly named the games. You're on the right track that their relationships have something to do with movies. But the movies are not all from the 80s, and it's not something that all six have in common. I'm looking for a way to go from game #1 to game #4 by following the two separate paths in the middle.
On Woobacca's, 2a = Lord of the Rings (SNES)

(1) The Goonies -> (2a) Lord of the Rings -> (3a) X-Men -> (4) Dune
Path B:

Man, my internet goes out for 1 night, and I miss woobacca's puzzle. That was a good one. Well, I'm still working on some more puzzles (I've got 2 brewing), but here's a couple of pics to get me back in the swing here... 3 games I always kind of associate in my mind... Not sure why. Good luck!

weren't they all in the same issue of NP? That's funny, cause I associate those games too, along with Kickmaster ;-)

Yup, nice work by the two of you! I forgot about Kickmaster. Sometimes my brain lumps Kabuki Quantum Fighter in this group as well... Weird how that works...

Kabuki Quantum Fighter was awesome... we found that at Phar-Mor years ago when they rented games on sale for $5.

Nicely done. One correction though: You really *don't* want Radiant Silvergun.(well, you probably do, but it's really not worth the hype IMO. Still, I was happy to get roughly 5 times what I originally paid for it. Gradius V and Ikaruga are 10 times more fun)
Oh, but I do agree with you on the other two, especially Sin & Punishment. It's insane to even think of making a game that uses every button and stick on the N64 control pad (and most of them at the same time!), let alone actually pull it off with skill and finese.

Yep, you got it. The customization was definitely the best part of the game, changing the gravity, different vehicles, and the custom tracks. The racing itself wasn't so hot.
Now here's three more, hopefully they aren't dupes, I haven't been keeping close tabs on the last few pages:
