View Full Version : Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Anyone else pick this hidden gem up?
I played a little bit of it, and I'm blown away at how atmospheric and stunning everything looks and feels. The games starts off slow (in a good way) and really gets going as it progresses.
Very nice game.

It's only $40, too.
I'll post reviews as they spring up. Keep an eye on this title -- it'll be one of those under-the-radar sleeper hits.

I'm really looking forward to this as well - read all the Lovecraft Cthulhu stories as a kid always thought they were way creepier than most Steven King stuff. The only review so far I've seen is from EuroGamer and it's pretty good (8/10)
it's at...

Don't even put Stephen King in the same sentence as Lovecraft. Good god.
Played two+ hours of it so far. As it rolls on, it gets more and more complex (story-wise and gameplay-wise). This is the game that Eternal Darkness tried to be, but failed.
Haven't got my hands on a weapon yet, so I'm doing a lot of detective work and sneaking past the fucked up Fishmen (armed with shotguns and such). When they raided my hotel room, that was some intense gameplay. :O

Please, someone tell me how to pronounce Cthulhu.
I would, but I'd have to pull out your tongue.
Please, someone tell me how to pronounce Cthulhu.
Well, H.P. Lovecraft was a li'l on the insane side... he claimed that human vocal cords couldn't properly pronounce "Cthulhu".
However, it's commonly pronounced "ka-tu-lu". There are subtle "H"s in there, after the "T" and the "L", in the context of "hoo".
The Best Buy clerk referred to it at "Call of Catoo-la-hoo"... Actually, he said that in the tone of correcting my pronunciation when I asked about it. ;o

I've always heard it pronounced Ka-thoo-loo (accent on 2nd syllable and the 'oo' said as in 'loop'.) I like this one myself since it rhymes with cukoo, which is what Lovecraft had to be to come up with this stuff.
That said, I agree with Brak that he probably meant in to be unpronouncable, and Cthulhu is one of the easy ones. Did you ever try to say some of the other proper names he gave to his monsters/gods/places? (Y'ha-nthlei doesn't quite just roll off the tongue)

I saw a mini-review of this in my local paper. Sounds interesting. Might have to pick it up with my rewards, best buy bucks and a GGC. That'll get the total down to around $20 out of pocket. Not too bad.....

I haven't been able to find this game ANYWHERE! Jeez, it's driving me mad....Erich Zann mad!
I'm glad to hear that it's turned out to be good though. It damn will should be, the thing's been in development forever! And to think, I told myself I was done buying XBOX games too....oh well.

In one review I read, the author complained about the lack of a HUD, and wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out what to do next. Also, there was no health/stamina/sanity meter. How the heck can you tell when you need health, or is that not even relevant in this game?
By the way, Fry's has it for $29.99 now...

I wanted to do one last TRU set of games last week with this, RE 4 and maybe Blitz, but couldn't find this for the life of me. Ah well...second option is to pick it up at BB with my rewards. That is, if Best Buy even has it.

This game sounds fun, it is supposed to come out for the PC, think I might pick it up for the computer when it comes out.

Well, that was an intentional decision in making the game. It's the best part of the game, in my opinion.
Also, there was no health/stamina/sanity meter. How the heck can you tell when you need health, or is that not even relevant in this game?
Again, another intention decision. You can view your health by simply pressing the start button and examining the model of your character (where there will be wounds and cuts and so on) which you can repair with medical packs.
However, the really cool thing about no health meter is that your health determines what the game looks like. Blurred vision, blood on the screen and so on.
They did this to immerse yourself within the character, making it appear as though you're actually looking through his eyes. And it works.
GameSpot review is up:

8.6
The Good:
Great mix of adventure, exploration, action, and stealth mechanics; Creepy, compelling storyline; Invisible interface adds to immersion; Some outstanding audio; Intense pacing
The Bad:
Stealth and shooter sequences are relatively unimpressive on their own; Visuals look fairly dated at times; You might run into some noticeable bugs.

Yup. Comes out in March.

Ye wasn't there like two versions of this game? One by Bethseda and the other by 2k games? I'll probably look into this as I want to support Bethseda games (Morrowind).

Both Bethseda and 2k Games are a part of this title.
There's a third-person action/adventure Call of Cthulhu coming out next year by Hip Games and Headfirst Prod (no idea who the fuck they are). It's subtitle is "Destiny's End".

since I loved eternal darkness (one of, if not the game cube's finest), do you recommend this even more brak?

Looks like Amazon has a PS2 release date of 1/15/06! Yay! And for $8 more, you can bundle it with a Winnie-the-Pooh bear(snicker)

Ordered this one with the GS buy 1 get 1 deal.. can't wait. Alone in the Dark and Eternal Darkness (both based on Lovecraft, one officially the other "loosely") are two of my favorite games of all time.
