So let's start seriously talking about a CAG meetup? Anyone want to throw out some places and/or dates? I'd like to get something done before Valentine's weekend....as if it doesn't happen before then, I'm thinking that it will never happen. Anyhow, so what are we thinking?
I know that we've tossed around the idea of the Dave & Buster's in Rockville/N. Bethesda....any other ideas?

I think that D&B's is the place. There was only one exception to the place, and that was before we started talking seriously about a meetup. Anyhow, this will allow our fellow CAGers who are not of legal age to join us...and we'll have something to do, if we don't care to actually hang out with one another. :) I haven't been there in ages, nor have I been to an arcade in ages either. Anyway....let's throw out some times and dates of interest, and we can hammer that out also.

Okay, who is organizing this thing?
I am usaully out and about with my band (The Vicious Martinis) playing so anyone interested in meeting, just shoot me a message and I will get try to get you on the guest list to one of our shows.
Let's make an agenda of what we hope to get accomplished by meeting. The idea of meeting is cool because we all like gaming (to some degree), we all should be able to get along (everyone should display their best behavior) and not ditch each other (unless someone is a total creep) and have a good time meeting other CAG folk. At least it will be good to set up a network to help each other out with deals.
So, let try to get something together.

lurknomore
01-18-2007, 12:47 PM
I entirely agree with theBob101. I think that we should work out what we want to do, an agenda...not to be nerdy about it, just so that it's not a total waste of anyone's time...and that we can get somethings accomplished. So let's throw some ideas as to what we want to do....I'd like to swap emails, tradelists, gamertags....play some DS and PSP games....
Anyhow....it looks like D&B is the place. There will be no more talk of that. Let's talk dates now. This way we'll have some more motivation to get together and plan for things. How does Saturday, February 24th sound? It is the weekend after Valentine's Day weekend....and a month gives us more than enough time for us all to schedule to be there. How's that sound....

Feb. 24 sounds good to me.
I would like to exchange Live gamertags, possibly trade some games and meet everyone, not to mention I love their buffalo chicken wrap! I don't have a PSP or a DS, but that doesn't bother me if everyone else does.
We should also put our trade lists up (I know some of you have yours posted already, but this would make it easier for us folks). I would be looking for some guides.

Hey I just added a bunch of you guys to my Live Friends list. I would definitely be interested in trading some games. I've had some nice hauls of xbox,ps2,gc, ds, psp lately and need to unload them. That date sounds good. Hey not sure if you guys know this or not but you can add people via you avatar LIVE link by double clicking on it. It brings up your gamercard and allows you to add to your friends or etc. Cool never noticed that before!

Long story short: I bought a Wii, thought it was broken, bought another one, found out only the remote was messed up on the first one, returned the broken remote in my spare remote packaging, and now I have another Wii brand new, unopened in the package. I'm in DC (NW U-Street area), is anyone here looking for one? I'd love to put it in the hands of another CAG instead of a random on Craigslist.
On a side note, I'll see if I can make the D&B trips.

I was there this weekend and saw they have a new clearance bin of console/PC games. Some for $5 or less I think
The only ones worth mentioning were Mercenaries (PS2 & Xbox), City of Heroes, Batman Begins, FFXI Chains of Promanthia.
They had several diff games but those were the only ones that caught my attention.

Come on fellas. The excitement over this has died down some. What's there to be nervous about? There has to be more in the area that can commit to this.
This meet-up is a great way to say thanks and show our appreciation to CAG and the CAG community, I think. Think about all of the savings. I'm going primarily to hang out, and touch base with some of y'all so that we can help each other out on the major deals in the area. That in and of itself will make the trip worthwhile for me.
Maybe someone wants to make a banner so that we can throw it on our CAG signatures to get the word out on this meet-up. Anyone skilled enough, or have the time?

I couldn't agree more. Other areas have tried to set up meetups with no success. As I said earlier, I PMed Cheapy and he is pretty stoked about it. I owe a lot to CAG and so does my wallet. I totally agree, I will ask the Grand Poobah Cheapy D if we could have some front page love to get the rest of the members in our area involved. He did ask us to take some pictures which sounds like he was going to post something about it, but that would be after the fact.
I will PM him and post his reply. I will also see if Goozex will officially sponser it. If they do, maybe we could get a section reserved at D&B. I wonder if any other local business types would sponser it or maybe that could be something we could do for the next one if this one works out well.

I waited in line for a second one because we (my girlfriend and I) thought the first one we bought was broken.... turned out to be a problem with the remote. So, we have one we never even opened. If any of you local CAGs are still searching for one, let me know.

Yeah... i actually spent 30 mins + looking for everyone. I used my sidekick to check the post by bob and then i felt like a tool. I do think we should set something up of where we should meet, their were a TON of people their today but i was never questioned for my age or anything, a ton of kids were just running around (like a horrible chucky cheese that smelled of booze)

Just called D&B and they can't reserve anything for us on short notice (should of called earlier, mental note). I don't think we will have a problem hanging at the bar at first and then getting seated (we might have to wait to accommodate all of us if the group gets large).
lurknomore, are you able to get over there and see if there is a location we can meet. If not, let me know and I will try to get over there and post a location.
I have been speaking with Mark from Goozex and they are officially sponsering the event. I have asked Cheapy D to post a blurb on the main page, but have not heard back from him. If anyone that is coming has a camera or digi cam, please bring it, he (Cheapy D) did ask me to take pictures/movies.
If this one turns out well, I am sure we could get more pub and sponsers for the next one. CAG DC should ROK and set an example for the rest of CAG as far as meetups are concerned.
Again, looking forward to meeting you all.

I'll try to stop by tomorrow.
Edit: I went by today. And I spoke with the powers that be, etc, etc.
There are two sets of tables in the bar that we could seat ourselves. The table that I am speaking of is this long bar hightable that seats 14 people, 7 a side. There is one table in the front of the bar, right where you come in (Mallside), and the other table is on the rear of the bar. They said that if one of us can get there before the others get there and early enough...that we could keep the entire table to ourselves. If it is indeed busy on a Saturday afternoon, truthfully the bar area isn't that big to begin with though.

List me as a MAYBE.......as my good college pal CheapyD has been bugging me to attend. My plans to travel to NYC for the Comic-Con and Anime Awards may be kiboshed.
As a longtime veteran of D&B in Rockville (GOLD Level Baby!!)...I will say this...
Depending on the # of people attending...the bar is the most central....and I do highly recommend the Nachos as they stack toppings on each of the chips individually and they also have REALLY Tall SuperSize Beers. HA!!
You should specify which entrance you may want to be closer to as there is a Mall entrance and a Back Main Entrance.
Now if you need room to possibly lay stuff out or a table to arrange......there is a large area for watching sport events with tables which is usually very dead.
Saturdays are hit or miss on how busy they are.......but tends to be on the busy side in the afternoons b/c Kids are still allowed in.
As for items for trade.......as CheapyD will attest to......I have tons of stuff....if you ask I might have it lying around.....likely unopened.
I can think of a used STEEL BATTALION (complete in box) in particular that I have never bothered playing.

I thought the first DC Meetup was a total success! Members in attendance were myself, lurknomore, abhinav, cleaver, FRAUD_WHATS_THAT, greenfox, MaxBiaggi3, Mark & Jon from Goozex.
Mark & Jon brought out a bunch of 360 games for everyone in attendance as well as membership deals to Goozex for CAGs who hadn't registered yet.
We talked, had a few drinks, talked, a few of us took a trip out to FRAUD_WHATS_THAT's car and cleaned his trunk out of games & guides. I walked away with quite a few good deals, not to mention a free 360 game! abhinav had his sidekick and was checking deals on CAG for us. We almost went to BB when he read about the price drops, lol.
We are definitely going to organize another meetup. So, I thought we could start discussing what everyone would like to do at the next one.
When should the next meetup be?
Where would be a cool place to meet?
Should we set something up where we could actually play some games?
Any questions/answers that anyone has please post.

Yeah, yesterday was a good time. Thanks to the organizers, everybody that showed up, and the guys from Goozex.
I checked out the Rockville Best Buy yesterday, but they didn't have much stock left in the game department. The section for every system was looking pretty picked over; it seemed like only the games that were released in the last few months had more than 0-1 copies left. My thought is that they probably already sent a lot of their old stock elsewhere. Too bad, I would have liked Advance Wars DS for $2.

Everyone was really cool to hang out with. It was nice just to talk about our passion of video games and our love of all things CAG. A great, great bonus was meeting the guys from Goozex. Unfortunately, work built up last week, overtook my weekend (with a little Crackdown to ease the pain), and continues through this week. With luck, I'll make the next meetup.
If we ever meet in VA, I am definitely game, but I'll have to think on the location.
The planets would have to align for it to be worthwhile, but a CAG run up (or down) Route 7 is possible on a deal rich day. It's probably best as an idea for Black Friday (unless AMZN spoils the brick-and-mortar party again).
Going from South to North (Skyline/Alexandria/Falls Church to Tysons/Fairfax/Vienna), you have:
Skyline Target
Baileys GS
Baileys TRU
Baileys BB
Baileys CC
Tysons CC (while it still exists)
Tysons EB
Tysons North EB
Tysons North BB
Tysons North CC
I'm probably missing some prospects (e.g., the terrible Tysons FYEs), but these are my occasional haunting grounds. Any comparable retail concentration in MD?

Sounds like there is nothing at the local BBs. Oh well, I can't buy anymore games I will never play. Just received my Crackdown from Buy.com for $44. Can't wait to play, loved the demo.
Anyway, so what does everyone think about making the next meetup a private event as far as renting some rec hall or if someone has a huge house and set up food, drink, & gaming stations. It would cost, but the more folks in, the less it would be. I believe a rec center rental for 3-4 hours in the afternoon is $200-300. If not, then we can think about having it at the Arundel Mills D&B and calling ahead to reserve a section for us. I could take care of all of that. Gaming would have to be portables and the game room. I will call them and see what something like that runs for.
Post suggestions and when you all think we should have the next meetup.

Thanks again Mark for the awesome gift. I will definitely sign up this weekend and try to list most of my games. Thanks for taking time out of your guy's schedule to hang out with such cheap arses!
Thanks to everyone who attended. Had a good time and didn't play one game. Chatty kathys I guess. (That sounded a wee bit...) nevermind.
Best buys have manly been a bust from Manassas - Woodbridge - Tysons but some deals were found. Picked up a couple Darkwatch's for Xbox but not much else. Blockbuster/Gamerush deal is somewhat of bust too because most Blockbusters don't sell many new games anymore. Check out my previous posts about some info on Compusa. Mainly 10% game stuff. Wrists starting to hurt bad! Me caveman no like to type. Sorry late.
Thanks again guys for the meet up had an awesome time.

Call of Duty 3 on the Wii will make you puke. The game just feels wrong to me, gameplay is ok but the graphics are crap and playing it with the motion controls just does not work. Bah off to goozex this goes.

Hey DC cags. I only found out about the D&B meet from the frontpage post, and it was too late to arrange anything. I live in Southern PA, but my wife is from Gaithersburg/Rockville so we're there fairly often. I would definitely be interested in a meetup for gaming, be it tournaments or just for fun. I could bring my xbox or xbox 360 if anyone is thinking of doing a LAN. And I've met Matthew before, he's a good guy. I'll keep an eye on this thread for updates.

Anything that isn't on this list will be closing:

In other words any store in NoVA or DC is gone, and MD will only have stores in Columbia and Towson.
I stopped at the Alexandria branch (near the Landmark mall) last week and an employee said they'd be open until late april.

I'm not going to miss them at all, but I look forward to how this will change the dynamic in the cafe over at the Barnes & Noble near Fair Oaks. The only reason free Wifi has been available there has been because of the CompUSA's network reaching through the wall. With it gone, perhaps *gasp* people will have to pay for Wifi access there. That will certainly be fun to see when I work there again this summer

The Gaithersburg CompUSA was the same thing that it was pre-clearance/closing prices. Yes, there were up to 20% prices everywhere...but hardly anything was a deal. Apple stuff was only a 5%, so it'll all be awhile before anything is priced great. I couldn't believe all of the yokels buying cart loads worth of stuff though....idiots.

I've got an idea...a project or proposal perhaps. As we all know from the deals pages, the store that we most miss out on in these parts is Fry's. They have incredible deals, really incredible deals on brand newly released games. I was thinking that perhaps we could set up a system where we could have group buys by a friend, relative, or a responsible CAG from a location near a Fry's...who would buy certain sale games in bulk and then send it to one of us...to then distribute to us DC metro gamers. I'm sure that the savings would still be worth it if we could commit enough people. I have faith in the DC CAG community, and we could then get in on some of these mind-blowingly good Fry's deals.

One of my brothers lives in Southern California (SD) and the other one lives in Orange County and both are gamers. I just checked and there is a Fry's near both of them. I could ask them if they are willing to pick stuff up for us at Frys.

I don't know what's up with the people in Gaithersburg b/c that store looks like it's being pretty successful at selling off it's inventory at current reduced prices. On the VA side, the deals at the Vienna/Tyson's CompUSA aren't all that much better. Games were 10% off last weekend, which translates to ~5% off after tax. Bleh. The stock of PC games was great and only okay for the consoles/handhelds. Current gen systems have been picked over pretty well, but most still have some games.
Store was busy and lines were long for the higher discounted computer junk. You won't find a retail copy of Vista any cheaper. Here's hoping for higher discounts before the other fools pick the store clean.

Not a bad idea, but it's tough to herd cats.
-- A regular schedule of good deals that we can't get anywhere else is what you need.
A couple of problems:
-- Fry's deals depend on release schedules, which are erratic
-- Fry's deals are good but aren't consistently the best around
-- Fry's deals are sometimes available online (e.g., God of War 2 @ $39.99 shipped)
-- (I signed up with Gameznflix, so I am buying fewer games)
That said, I'm happy to go in on a good deal if it comes up.

Isn't another problem with some Fry's deals that many of them can be in the form of rebates? Rebates are swell and good, but make for an ackward deal. I almost think our efforts would be better placed trying to convince Fry's to open a Northern Virginia store, especially with CompUSA on the way out. We do have one of the few Microcenter locations so I guess anything is possible

I was out at the Fair City Mall GameStop in Fairfax this past Tuesday. They're closing tomorrow (Sun 4/8), probably because there's an EB at the Pickett Shopping Center right across the street.
The bad news...no liquidation, they'll just pack everything up and ship it back to EB/GS. The good news...as a sign of apprecation they're offering a 20% off coupon good for one total purchase at the Pickett EB. The person that gave it to me said it was good for any used games/accessories and that they were looking into extending it to cover new games too. The coupon expires on 4/22 and mentions that systems are *not* included.
I'm not sure if a purchase is required to get the coupon or how many they have. I went in for Battalion Wars and the guy offered it to me on the way out. It's a B&W full-page printout. Might be worth checking out if you're nearby.

I think we need to make an official distinction on where NoVA goes in the forum descriptions. Apparantly having DC seperate from Virginia is too confusing. Northern VA should go in NE imho.

I agree, NOVA is in the DC Metro area. I am in Maryland and still always post in this thread. When we had the meetup it was CAG members from the Washington DC Metro area (MD, VA, DC, almost had someone from DE). It seems that a few of the NOVA folks don't want to be considered DC, they would prefer to be considered VA and post in that thread. Totally confusing when they are closer to DC than Richmond.

Why are Virginia and Maryland/DC in separate regions anyway (in the forum descriptions)? It makes no sense at all. There should be "Mid-Atlantic" with PA, DE, MD, DC, VA, maybe WV.

I have found it depends on the game, I have a couple up on Goozex, but no one is biting. I have found that even though the game is requested, that doesn't mean yours will get taken. Still learning how the whole system works, but it is very cool. Just received a sealed Godfather for the 360.

Hi all, I haven't looked at this tread in a while. I was at the last get together and it was a pretty good time. I would definitely be down for another one.
The CompUSA in Rockville is down to it's last 8-9 days. I picked up the WOW expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, for $14 dollars there today. It's definitely the best game deal there, and they still have a huge stack of copies, as of this morning. I don't know why. Everything else is getting to be pretty picked over. They still seem to have a pretty decent stock of 360 games, but even at 30% off it's nothing too spectacular, and I already have a few games in the backlog. Keep in mind that all sales there are final.
On another note, does anyone know if any of the Circuit City's around here have the $8 Starcraft battlechest? My disc from way back in the day is worn out, and I've been waiting to snag another copy on the cheap. The Rockville and Mannassas (I have a buddy down there) stores don't have it. I'm gonna hit up Wheaton and Gaithersburg tomorrow. I still run through strategies for that game in my head sometimes, which is pretty bizarre.

Sorry greenfox, haven't seen the Starcraft Battlechest, but I'll take a look next time I'm at Circuit City.
On another note, now that my law school exams are winding down (1L year is over on Thursday!!) I'm thinking about building an arcade cabinet with a MAME setup over the summer. My ultimate goal is to rig up both a computer and my modded Xbox so that I can play MAME games as well as games like SF: Anthology over Xbox Live. Has anyone locally ever gotten involved in a project like this that can give me some words of advice?
I've got a pretty solid plan together and drew up some plans for the cabinet, but an ad for a pair of ultra-cheap arcade cabinets came up the other day. So, I'm thinking about buying one of those and modding it because it'll be a lot cheaper and more authentic.
I'll be sure to document my progress and when I get done maybe I'll have a small CAG get together to break it in. I've got a couple of 360 if people want to play those too. Also, if anyone else is interested in doing something like this over the summer, I can pick up both arcade cabinets cheap and ordering further parts (joysticks, buttons, etc.) will be cheaper to do as a pair in bulk.
There's been a lot of talk about another meetup; anything planned? I was really bummed to miss the last one because of school, but I would love to make the next one!

I was really bummed to miss the last one because of school, but I would love to make the next one!
thats so cool man i wanna build one in the future let me know when you finish it or if u need some help putting it together.

I haven't seen a Starcraft battle chest at a CC in a long time.
I think anyone's best bet to find one this week is to go on BB website and search on location to price match the CC ad.

I haven't been around these boards as much as I have wanted. Been busy trying to get rid of my video game collection, at least the stuff that I absolutely won't touch any longer..anyhow, how is the whole gang here doing? We should get together again. Had a good time the time before.

Things are settling down for me again. In time to get ready for the summer business. :-)

Are all the compusa's closed now in the md and va areas?

I went by the Rockville CompUSSR and it is now gone. They did have signs showing that a Microcenter will be coming in. This is a definite upgrade, methinks. No longer having to trek down to VA for Microcenter deals. Hooray. It's a good space too.

Microcenter is a computer-related supplies store, much like CompUSA, with great deals more often than CompUSA. Quality products at fair prices for all things computer or electronics related. They have recently made a push into console video gaming, even the used business. Should be a good thing for Marylanders.

Check it out.

Microcenter is another electronics/computer big-box chain, but one with only a handful of stores.
http://www.microcenter.com
They have periodic ads that are sometimes so dense they look like classified ads with pictures. There are occasionally wicked deals to get people in-store, but they often sell out.

Hey fellas, been awhile for me as well. Been busy with work and the twins lately. I thought one baby was crazy! Anywho, we should definitely meet up again. I think we should pick a place somewhere between MD & VA. Seen a few Nova's expressing interest. Crap, I hope I can make it. I've played my 360 like a total of 2 hours in the last month! Gotta go, later and hope we can meet up again. I still have some swag I need to unload. Goozex can only take so much.
Edit: Sorry had to remove the Tootles, sounded a little gay, not that there's anything wrong with that..

I am going to start thinking of a date for our next meetup. Is everyone agreed that Dave & Busters is a good middle location? If not, make suggestions. I was thinking the end of June on a Saturday.
Let me know and I will start planning. Mark, you still in for the Goozex folks? By the way, love your site, addicted, like video game trading crack.

Yeah of course Goozex is in! This is assuming that we are in town. Btw, if anybody sees me out tomorrow night in Baltimore, I'm not on company time...

2nd Washington DC area CAG meetup
Where: Dave & Buster's, White Flint Mall, Rockville/N. Bethesda, MD
Map (http://www.yellowpages.com/sp/maps/maps.jsp?linkType=13&rurl=t%253D0%2526v%253D2%2526s%253D1%2526q%253Ddav e%252Band%252Bbusters%2526ci%253DRockville%2526st% 253DMD%2526_requestid%253D151894&impressionId=4&listingId=75211028&id=75211028)
D & B website
(http://www.daveandbusters.com/Locations/Default.aspx?Loc=0009)
When: Friday, June 1st @ 5:30pm
Bring items for trade or sale and this time, someone needs to bring a camera. Check lists to know exactly what you would like from someone or just bring yourself to meet and greet. Last meetup, a couple of purchased a bunch of stuff. I have already hooked up a guide purchase.
Also, if you have a lot of stuff to trade/sell, think about parking in the top floor of the parking garage with the D&B entrance. That would be the easiest if everyone parked there and we could have all of the cars around each other to get our stuff. I know I have a ton of guides and games I am going to bring and I have too many to bring into D&B.
So, now we will start the attending/not attending list:
