Signs are pointing to no for my attendance.

Taking off from work early on Friday is one thing. Cutting a swath through Friday rush hour up to White Flint is another.

Have fun, guys! Perhaps the third time will be the charm.

Yeah, that's a good point. Better switch me to a no. I'm coming from over an hour away. The next one should be on a saturday or something.

Any CAGs from northern VA know a good place to pick up the wireless MS headset and if it is worth it? I have heard mixed reviews from friends and other CAGs some say it great or a wireless and others say you can hear a lot of background noise and friends on XBL can't hear you right.

Just a repost of the original announcement:

2nd Washington DC area CAG meetup

Where: Dave & Buster's, White Flint Mall, Rockville/N. Bethesda, MD

D & B website
(http://www.daveandbusters.com/Locations/Default.aspx?Loc=0009)
When: Friday, June 1st @ 5:30pm

Bring items for trade or sale and this time, someone needs to bring a camera. Check lists to know exactly what you would like from someone or just bring yourself to meet and greet. Last meetup, a couple of purchased a bunch of stuff. I have already hooked up a guide purchase.

Also, if you have a lot of stuff to trade/sell, think about parking in the top floor of the parking garage with the D&B entrance. That would be the easiest if everyone parked there and we could have all of the cars around each other to get our stuff. I know I have a ton of guides and games I am going to bring and I have too many to bring into D&B.

So, now we will start the attending/not attending list:

hey guys...we can make it friday...but we might be running late...maybe around 6:00.

Saturday during the day also works for us and might be the best for all the maybes & no's...

does changing it to Saturday afternoon throw things off? If it does, then disregard this question....

I think changing it to Saturday afternoon would be the best thing. What time do you think is best. 3:00, 4:00 or 5:00? I will edit all of the posts once we decide. I will also PM everyone about the change once it is decided.

Hey Goozex and CAG guys...I had a f-ing great time with you all at Dave & Buster's. I am sorry that I had to jet after only being there for 2 hours. Geez, but it was a great time once again...and I feel like we've got a pretty good thing going. One of these days we'll actually get around to playing games, instead of just drinking $7 beers and shooting the shit.

Thanks to everyone for coming out. You all are really becoming friends. Special shout-out to Goozex for hooking me up again, and....a super-dooper Pokemon hello to our fellow CAG klam and the two chicks.

I'll try to post more often in this thread. Feel free to add my gamertag if anyone else has a 360 and wants to play some games sometime.

Hopefully, I'll have some stuff to trade/sell next time. I think what was suggested is a good idea, making tradelists for the meetup so everyone knows what everyone has to trade. Looking forward to the next meetup!

I don't know about the one in College Park, but the Pandora's Cube in Springfield closed shortly after they were raided by the FBI. The location in the White Marsh Mall (north of Baltimore) stayed open until sometime this year, I think, but the last time I was up there, it was closed as well. Their selection was never as good as Starland, though.

The Baltimore area has a chain called Power Play that sells import games. They have a decent selection, but they're somewhat overpriced. The stores I know of are in the Owings Mills Mall, the Glen Burnie Mall (not Marley Station), Towson Town Center, and Reisterstown Mall (really ghetto). I like to browse in there, and the prices on things besides imports aren't bad.

I didn't know Pandora's in White Marsh closed, but then again I never shopped there anyway. I never found reasonable prices there. And unless they moved, the Power Play (or Power Gamer whatever) in Towson closed. I found some really nice deals at the one in Glen Burnie a couple months ago. They had a 20% off all used games sale, along with a buy 2 get 1 free on all xbox games. Didn't really look at their imports though, small selection and I gave up on import games after Dreamcast.

I stopped in to the Glen Burnie store today while I was over that way for work. The guy there told me they did move the Towson store to another level, but he wasn't sure where. I'll have to look for it next time I'm in Towson. And they have the 20% sale going on (at Glen Burnie) but it's more limited now. PS1, PS2, GBA, DS, PSP, DC, Saturn only (think that's all) and buy 1 get one half price for xbox, GC, and Anime/DVDs. Picked up Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition for under $14 after tax. No deals on Wii, 360, or PS3.

Yeah guys the Pandora's Box in Springfield closed due to some shaddy business going on in there. They were selling modded PS2's and Xbox's like crazy. $250.00 for an Xbox with like 20 games on a 125 gig hard drive. I know plenty people  who got in on that deal. But now you gotta his estarland. That's about the only place to go import....Missed the event due to the job but when are you guys shooting for another meet and greet?.....

nuttyturnip
06-09-2007, 08:44 PM
I drove up to Towson today. The mall is under renovation, so the Power Gamer is temporarily located on the 2nd floor, across from the Rainforest Cafe and a few stores down from EB.

The one thing I really hate about Power Gamer is they keep all their new titles, including imports, behind the counter, often spine out. That's fine for domestic titles (I guess) but for the majority of us who don't speak Japanese, it's impossible to browse their imports with just the string of characters on the spine to go on. It's no wonder the Glen Burnie store has had a copy of Sin and Punishment for so long; no one can see it or figure out what it is.

tw4win
06-09-2007, 08:53 PM
I'm more than a little disappointed by the import selection in most stores, at least around the DC area. I've been looking for:

Persona 3:FES (PS2)
Super Robot Wars W (DS)

both are VERY popular games in Japan so you would think that stores that carry import games would have them. None do. Starland (well, eStarland.com) is the closest I can get and they are out of stock and don't plan on getting more in. I could have Pandora's special order both games for me but if I'm going to do that I may as well order from Play-Asia.

I had to drop my car off at the auto body shop today, and as I was driving around Rockville, I noticed the game/lan place that one of you mentioned at the D&B meet-up. It is called x30-gaming.com and it's right on Rockville Pike, next to the Arby's. It is a small but decent set-up, with pretty reasonable rates. Anyhow, wanted to pass along this little thing that they are running for any gamers that are interested.

I picked up a used PSP today for really cheap ($60). I'm not really interested in any games for it, but I would like to use to to play emulators. Does anyone locally have an unpatched GTA: Liberty City Stories I can use to downgrade my firmware (I have version 2.81)?

I had to drop my car off at the auto body shop today, and as I was driving around Rockville, I noticed the game/lan place that one of you mentioned at the D&B meet-up. It is called x30-gaming.com and it's right on Rockville Pike, next to the Arby's. It is a small but decent set-up, with pretty reasonable rates. Anyhow, wanted to pass along this little thing that they are running for any gamers that are interested.

Hi Washington D.C. Metro area CAGers. My girlfriend of 6 years just got accepted into a masters program at Georgetown and I'll be going with her. I'm looking for recommendations on where to look for an apartment, most likely just a 1 bedroom place. We'd like to be in a decent neighborhood that isn't too expensive (we currently pay just under $1400 a month) and isn't too far from the University. We currently live in San Diego so we don't know the area, but we'll be trying to fly out there within a few weeks to find a place to live. Also, anyone know of some companies in the area that I could look into for finding work for myself as a Mechanical Engineer?

I don't have a good feel for DC rents (I live in VA), but $1400/mo seems a little low for a trendy area like Georgetown. I think you can get a place for that much in VA, but there aren't any Metro stops near the school. As for MechE jobs, SAIC employs engineers, as do other government and defense contractors. The USPTO is another option.

On an unrelated note, I am looking for a Wii for my sister for her birthday (near the end of the month). I see it is in the CC ad this week and I heard rumor of some up at the Rockville TRU earlier this week. Any better intel is much appreciated.

After looking at some listings online it looks like we may be able to live fairly close to the school with a comparable rent to what we are paying now if we live live a couple miles south of DC in VA. Supposedly the Metro stops in Rosslyn and then the walk to the school from there isn't too long. We don't need to live in DC we would just like to be close enough to school where my gf didn't need a car and so we're hoping the Metro will help.

I had looked into SAIC and didn't see anything that seemed to fit me, I'm a pretty recent grad (just a year out of school) so I think I'd basically need an entry level type positions for someone to consider me. Thanks for the recommendation on the USPTO its something I probably would have never thought of, I looked that up and I think I'll end up applying there along with whatever else I find.

First welcome to the area i hope you will enjoy your stay.
If your in rosslyn the school is just across the bridge, but depending where in rosslyn you stay this can be a very far walk. If you catch the train the closest station to georgetown is still 20 mins away walking

Yeah, Rosslyn is a nice area, lots of young folks, and there's great restaurants and a small mall there near the Metro. Don't know about Georgetown, but I've heard other people say it's not near the Metro at all (that's why I've never been).

Correct. Even from Rossyln Metro, it is 2-3 blocks to Key Bridge, then over the bridge and another 2-3 blocks (I think) to the university. Unfortunately when they were building Metro Georgetown residents shortsightedly decided not to have the disruption of building it in their neighborhood, and now Georgetown is home to horrible traffic jams and no Metro alternative.

The CC at Tyson's West on Leesburg Pike had 1 Just Cause left, it's behind the Fantastic Four 360 games if anyone checks. They had two DOA XVB games which are also $16.96. No VT 3 copies there.

The CC at Bailey's Crossroads had 3 VT games left and 3 DOA XVB games. No Just Cause copies there.

Also, after 5 $15 purchases you get $10 off.

Also if you're looking for a wii in Northern VA go to the CC by Tyson's Corner. It's right across from where the new Best Buy opened up and is in the same complex as the conatiner store. Went there this week and they had some wii's.

I've got a question though - my 360 finally went red on me this week, so while I'm sending it back for repairs, I figured it'd be a good time to grab a Wii. I saw that they're in the circulars at best buy this week, but I'm wondering - anyone have any idea what time you need to get to the stores these days? Do I still need to get out of be at like 6, or should I be okay if I wander down around 9? I'm planning on dropping in on the BestBuy at Bailey's Crossroads, although I might head down to Springfield, since they're bigger - maybe I'll have a better chance down there.

Any suggestions or tips? It's so frustrating this area is so devoid of Wii's. Stupid Nintendo.

When I picked up one for my sister last month, I got to the Baileys Crossroads BBY somewhere between 8 and 8:30, and I was eighth in line. I swung by the Tysons BBY just before and the line there was around 15-20. Baileys had 18 or so in stock and the last two weren't claimed until about 45 minutes before the store opened. As you know, there were way more people than Wiis by opening.

About an hour before opening, an employee hands out tickets that allow you to leave and come back as long as you checkout in the first 1/2 hour after the store opens. Until someone came with the tickets, all the employees I saw were clueless.

Baileys was a good place to sit in line as it was in the shade. (The Tysons line was directly in the sun.) Also, the CC across the way had a few unadvertised Wiis that Sunday. (CC opens earlier than BBY on Sundays, and a lucky father picked up his son who was in line at BB). Good luck, INCyr!

jmiller80, are you mentioning the weekends that you are free...or for the cook-out at your place? Again, I think that we all would understand if decide to back out of that, but by the same token, we all would be excited about that possibility. Obviously, it wouldn't be an entirely open, open invitation and we could work to get it to be a manageable turnout of reasonable characters, etc.etc. I think that meeting up before hand would be a good idea for that reason, also we could also meet to commit to help out for the cook-out.

I don't know my schedule off-hand, as my wife and secretary, two different people, take care of that relatively unbeknownst to me. But I am really flexible. I'm down with either place. D&B would be good as alcohol is served there as well as food. The LAN place would be cool as we can actually game on consoles as well as computers. I'll find a link for that lan place so you all can check it out. And though there is no food there, they are cool to ordering food to the place and pigging out that way. But there would be "cover" charge, of course to game.

When you are refering to D&B, is that a "Dave & Busters"? Isn't there is one on Rockville Pike? I've never been to a D&B before, and I don't go to Rockville Pike very much since Y&T records died, but I'm pretty sure thats gotta be the place at White Flint you're referring to. Am I right?

CAG in DC. Question...does anyone know in which Best Buy the $10 coupon off of FOX TV DVDs work? I'm near 3 of them: Pentagon City, Wheaton, and the one on Wisconsin Avenue. Just curious to see if anyone has tried that coupon in any of those locations. I ask this because I've read that some stores don't recognize the coupon.

I can't comment on the DVD coupon, but I've used the GamePro $5 off coupons at the store on Wisconsin Avenue with no problems.

Checked the Tyson's FYE today, didn't look like they were clearancing or discounting any of the video games. No signs or anything about it and it looked like they were still taking pre-orders for games.

I was in the BestBuy at the Inner Harbor tonight and while browsing the PS3 section a worker made some room and put out Tiger Woods 2008.

I waited around a little longer to see if he would do the same for the Wii, but he didn't come back.

Also, they had about 10 Wiis out on a table, if anyone is still looking in the area. :)

Hey, I know this is pretty late to even mention this, but if anyone is near C-Mart in Joppa, MD (the first thing you get to in harford county if you're traveling on Pulaski Highway eastbound) they bought the inventory of some Gamestop that had a fire. Everything is 50% off Gamestop's marked prices (except their copies of Madden 08, which are 25% off) The sale started on thursday morning, so most everything great is gone. I didn't even find out about it until thursday night, and by friday midday I found very little current gen stuff. They did however have a very large selection of used xbox and PS2 games, along with a ton of used xbox and gamecube systems. Here's the link to their site so you can drool over what we all missed:

http://www.cmartdiscount.com/items/detail.aspx?id=11229&store=BA

Also keep in mind that basically all games have water damage. This means pretty much all case inserts are wrinkled and/or moldy, and a lot of games are missing manuals, even if marked as new. My only find to brag about is a complete and undamaged copy of Puzzle Quest DS for $15.

Don't feel too bad, there's really nothing exciting left. The guy there told me they had people lined up at 7am last thursday. This isn't the first time they bought the remains of a Gamestop that had a fire. About this time last year they had the same deal, but not really any consoles. More new and sealed games though. Here's the CAG link to the story from last time:

Have you, or anyone you know locally, gotten a gift card when they run out of a game on release day?

I recall some forum posts saying that they only give the card out if they fail to put any copies of the game on sale by a certain day and time. If the game sells out, no card for you -- it WAS on sale. Sounded like a worthless policy to me, if true, but CC has done and continues to do dumber things.

Hey all. The Best Buy on Rockville Pike is selling the new PSP Daxter bundles. They have a lot of copies locked up in that little cage they keep the systems in. What's really sweet is that I was able to pricematch the Target website deal there, so I got the bundle for $170. I'm pretty happy.

greenfox, so what are your first person impressions of the psp refresh? Is it cool worthy? I'm really thinking about it with the Target pricematch.

So far, I'm pretty happy with it. However, I never had the original PSP, and only played one once, so I really compare the two. It's definitely lighter than I remember the original being.

It feels comfortable in my hands (my hands cramp up on some games on the DS), and none of the buttons feel cheap or unresponsive. I've gotten used to the little analog nub faster than I thought I would. The screen looks great. I was mildly worried about dead/stuck pixels when I bought it, but I seem to be in the clear there.

I messed around with the web-browser a bit today to try to get some demos. It's not super fast, but it's not much slower than the browsers on the Wii and the PS3. I haven't gotten the Remote Play function to work yet, but I'm sure I'll be able to get it going when I have some more time to mess around with it this weekend.

The battery seems decent, if not spectacular. It hasn't run out yet; that's about all I can say about it so far.

It doesn't come with the cable to connect it to my TV. I find this odd, since this is supposed to be one of its biggest new features. Frankly, it seems like too much of a novelty for me to spend the $20 on it. Maybe once they get clearanced I'll try it out.

If there's anything else you want to know about it, just let me know.

It's a new port that has been placed on the PSP refresh. So I am thinking that a firmware update won't change that... Can a USB port allow for video out...'cause that would be the only way...unless you hacked apart and open your PSP and jacked in the video out on the inside.

If anybody is looking for a DS travel case/accessory kit, the Target in Greenbelt at Beltway Plaza has a pretty nice deal.

It's a DS case that comes with a car power adaptor, USB charger, case for a couple of DS games, AND 1 pre-packaged DS game. I saw three different ones, including:
DBZ: Super Sonic Warriors 2
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects

All of that is hidden away in the electronics department's clearance aisle for $14.98. I thought it was pretty sweet myself, even moreso for a kind of DS starter kit.

They had Project Slypheed for $17.50 and $20, Bullet Witch for $15, TMNT for $25, Call of Juarez for $30, Star Trek Legacy for $20, NCAA and FF11 for cheap, all for 360, all with water damage. Maybe some other less noteworthy games I can't remember. They had 3 or 4 FF12 LE guides for $15 I almost bought. No Wii, PS3, PSP, DS, or GBA games. A bunch of XBoxs and Gamecubes for $50 and $25 if I understood correctly. Some GOW faceplates for $10, a Forza one for $5 or $7.50, a Mass Effect one for $15.

The trade in value is relatively high. Higher than gs/eb at least. The catch is you gotta do store credit on that. There are also different levels of credit. Like you can't trade in a ps1 game for a ps2 game. Its gotta be on the same level. I think ps2 and ps3 are on the save level tho along with 360, xbox, gc, wii, ds, and psp. Everything below that is another level. Or something like that. Its on the sign when you walk in.

I tend to get good deals there regardless. Just get store credit and trade instead of cash. Cash is always less.

Yeah, he mentioned it in the latest CAGcast which was pretty cool to hear!

I don't see a Rockville location on the website. Is it this Bethesda one?

Yes, it is the Bethesda Dave & Buster's location. North Bethesda to be exact. For some of us who have lived here for ages, we still view the White Flint Mall that the D&B's is located in as Rockville. I don't know exactly when the name change happened, but I do know that it coincided with property tax and home price increases. I presume that N. Bethesda carries more cache than Rockville (regardless of R.E.M.'s homage to the girl from said city).

BTW, we have had minors (-18) join us before at D&B without issue. If you are a minor and wish to attend without your own guardian, shoot me a PM and I'll give you my cell phone # if you are concerned...and I'll walk you in. Again, it hasn't been an issue yet.

And finally, come prepared to talk about our next CAG meet-up. jmiller80 has volunteered his home and grill, and we will discuss plans for CAG Cook-out. Bring your calendars, fellas and lady.

I've been here before, and I have to say the Fish & Chips are awesome. All I did was play House of the Dead 2 & 4 the whole time though. I had enough refills of Coke to last me a lifetime and time flies past there like theres no tomorrow.

Only negative? You gotta have someone 23 years old or older to bring in younger CAGs. We got some guy to get us in when we went.

When did White Flint Mall get a Bethesda address? I grew up in DC, and to me and my friends White Flint Mall was always in Rockville. I was poking around google and I noticed that Borders bookstore gives it's location in White Flint Mall a Kensington address. What gives? I know it's not a big deal, but to people not familiar with the area it must get a bit confusing.

And in response to Lurknoemore's presumption about Bethesda vs. Rockville; you absolutely correct my friend. Bethesda will always trump Rockville in the eyes of people who care about such things around here. It's like McLean compared to Vienna in VA. Or Georgetown vs Foggy Bottom.

Just had a buddy of mine make a sig for the meetup. If you want to use it, the link is http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j36/thebob101/CAG/dcsig.jpg

This is very cool, think we will have more folks than last time.

Anyone bringing items to sell/trade, park in the top level of the garage in front of the Dave & Buster's entrance.

Look forward to seeing everyone!

I think you might beat me for being the farthest away. I'm at about an hour and a half out, but I cheat since my in-laws live about 20 mins from D&B and I'll be staying there for the weekend.

FYI, the Bailey's Crossroads Best Buy had about 12 Wiis as of last night (endcap of games aisle, middle of store). It seems like most people that want them have them, but now is the time if you want one before the holiday madness.

Also, that Best Buy kept their PC copies of Orange Box in the back, so I had to ask for it. Perhaps they are trying to wait out the CC pricematch, which is what I was there for.

To make trading easier, please park your car on the third level of the mall just outside of the exterior entrace of D&Bs. This will make swapping easier. Please also be sure to securely lock your valuables in the parking lot (as this is an "open" forum).

Received a coupon in the mail saying that the NEW Microcenter on Rockville Pike is now open. The coupon was for a free Flashcard or a USB thingy. Anyhow, the Microcenter has replaced the CompUSA that was in Rockville. I won't be able to make it down until our meetup on Saturday, but I'd love to hear how it looks...how the trade-ins there were, etc.

Does anyone have interest in buying or trading for an original 1.5 FW PSP? I've got a 512 meg card for it too. I'll bring it with for the meetup. I'm thinking $120 for the PSP, battery, charger, leather case and mem card. PSP is very much like new, and was hardly used since I got it at launch.

Which area of D&B do you guys hang out at and how can I identify CAGers?

We usually sit up front at the long bar table, near the entrance that leads you out into the mall. All in all, you won't have trouble finding us though. We all don't look like stereotypical gamer-nerds, but the conversation will definitely be. Just look for the group that is having the most fun, and join them.

Checked it out today.

Place looks nice. Game section is kinda small, but this is the only Microcenter I've ever been to so I don't know how it compares.

They aren't accepting trade ins right now. The manager said they'll prob starting taking them in November, unfortunately after the current trade in deal ends.

Despite the recent run on cancellations, we are still anticipating a great, great turn-out. Please do not feel the obligation to bring trade goods or even to RSVP. Simply show-up, and I will personally guarantee a good time. I will re-post all details once again, either late tonight or first thing tomorrow morn.

If you are underage and concerned about getting into D&Bs, have no fear. You can either PM and I'll provide you my cell phone number, and I'll walk you in. Or simply come to the Mall-side entrance of D&Bs and holler at one of us to bring you in. No worries. The last event we had, we had a 12 year old come to hang.

This is going to be a great opportunity to meet some local CAGs, and to hang out with most of the Goozex team...as they have long since confirmed their attendance.

So, looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. There is no reason to be shy or be intimidated with the gaggle of strangers...you'll quickly come to realize that we have a lot in common (beyond cheap ass gaming) and everyone, so far, has come with a uber-friendly attitude and of good cheer.
