When I download large files on Firefox and they don't finish, they leave behind an incomplete file on my desktop. However, when I try to delete the half of the file, it says it's being used by another program and it won't delete. There are no other programs that would be using those files, so what should I do?!

This might sound stupid, but is Firefox open?

Yeah, you might need to restart your computer then before opening up any programs, delete the files.

A similar thing happened to me when I tried to uninstall a program. A file couldn't be deleted because it was still in use even though the program had just been deleted, but it deleted fine after a restart.

I've restarted and closed Firefox. Nothing works!

What kind of file is it? If it's a common type of file (.pdf .doc etc) you may be able to just download a small file of the same type, and just name it the same, and when it asks if you want to overwrite the old file, say yes. Then delete it after it copies over it and finishes.

No, their pretty large files. Two are game demos, and the third is a Battlefield 2 patch. I have no idea how to get rid of this crap.

Boot up in safe mode.

use process explorer or a similar tool to see which process keeps the file open

If none does, it may be a file system problem. Do whatever you people do to check it.
