I opened my Xbox and the Thomson drive has a manufacture date of 2003, so it's not a launch model. Are the thomson drives just faulty all around? I thought they were made more reliable? I must stop my Xbox from getting DREs, but what's the use of buying another Thomson if it'll just crap out again. Or could it be something else?

Yeah, I've been abttling this thig for a while now. I just played through Conker with no problems, but Hitman Contracts has been giving me a whole ass of problems. I'll tkae back the disc and get another(used at EB), but it was doing this months ago too. I might just wait for the 360 at this point.

It's not really worth it to just buy the dvd drive when you can get a used xbox from ebgames with the samsung drive for about $100. There might be a price drop coming your way after the 360 launch.
Plus you can sell your broken system on ebay for about $50-60.

It should last you another 2-3 years for only $27. I would get if you plan on keeping your Xbox for at least that long.

Thomson drives are the worst of the worst. Do NOT buy another Thomson drive. Get yourself a Samsung drive and your Xbox will be happy.
I also bought my Xbox after it had beeen out for a couple years and still got a horrible Thomson in it. I had to spend $75 to replace it with the Samsung eventually, GTA San Andreas was the last straw! but in the end it was worth it cos I can play all Xbox gamea and use custom soundtracks in them too!

I might just wait for a 360 then. I wish I could replace the drive with any ol' DVD ROM rather than a specially made one, but alas.
