I've been playing Jade empire and in the first 6 hours every now and then a 'your disk is dirty or damaged' error came on. Maybe it happened 3 times. I have gotten to a point now where I can't continue at all. (Spot is 10 hours of play time, i'm in the imperial city about to go to the Necropolis.)
Has anyone else encountered this problem with Jade Empire? I'm just checking to see if this was at all common or just a bad disk.
On a related note, how good are stores at taking back games to exchange for the exact same title? (no receipt as I bought this game serveral months ago)

Three words:
Bad DVD-ROM drive.
I had the same issues with numerous discs and ended up having to deal with Xbox repair/replacement. Try any other discs, I'm sure it's not the discs that are the problem. Check the disc visually for defects, I'd wager there are only normal usage defects, if any.
Stores are usually OK with same-title swaps, as long as it's in their normal return period. Plus, they'll normally open the game at the counter to make sure you can't return the replacement for your money back.

Hasn't happened with any other disk, my wife took it with her to town and is going to exchange it.

It wasn't the disk..as the new game did the same thing. Any hints as to what to do (aside from buying a new xbox?)

Well if you have a thompson, the light at then end of the tunnel has now gone out. In other words time to sell if on ebay for parts and try to get enough money to buy a used xbox with a samsung drive. If you feel like opening it I can give you a guide on how to clean it out but most of the time it's not worth it.

I think I might try that, I don't really feel to excited about buying a new xbox.

You dont need to buy a new Xbox, just a new dvd drive. You can get Xbox ready Samsung drives on Ebay for about $75 shipped. Takes about a half hour to open up your Xbox and swap the drives. Why get a new xbox and lose all your harddrive content?

yeah but you can buy a used samsung xbox for $99 plus by selling the old one on ebay for parts he would make around $60. So it would only cost him $40 and avoid opening the system.

That sucks, sorry man. Looks like there's plenty of CAG knowledge to help you replace the drive though. Good luck...

Now here is the dilema.. buy a hard drive for 75 bucks... buy a new xbox for 100 or so, or buy a 360 that might not support a particular xbox game.
I am certainly leaning far from buying a 360 because of this fiasco---Maybe its time to get fully back into pc gaming. (Always easy to update, if something breaks ((never has)) easy to replace, and I've never had problems with pc gaming. Ok that might not be true having to tweak extended memory and setting DMA switches was a pain in the ass.

You're in the same boat I am. Fucking Thomson bullshit. This is exactly why I won't buy a 360 for at least a year after launch, maybe longer.

This is something I'm concerned about, too. You'd think that Micrsoft would have learned a lesson from all the current gen. consoles they had to repair or exchange due to dvd-rom issues.
I'm waiting on the 360, too, because I'm sure there will be issues/bugs with the systems sold at lauch after a while...
