I think you are being sarcastic, but I can't really tell.
Since you and others seem to have a stereotypical view of Oklahoma (or is it just Stillwater?) I'll give you a little info about it.
Stillwater, OK is home to Oklahoma State University. The town itself is about 40,000 to 50,000 population. There is also approximately > 33,000 students enrolled this semester. We have one Wal-Mart SuperCenter. I have been told our Wal-Mart is the highest revenue generating Wal-Mart in the country (I don't believe it, just what I was told). It might be true considering it's about 2 blocks away from campus and there are busses every 15 minutes going to and from (Wal-Mart to Campus and vice versa) with no charge to students and citizens (this may have changed recently). It also could have something to do with the fact Wal-Mart is the only store for groceries (the other places are way overpriced).
The school has just been given 2 donations from Boone Pickens (some oil/investment dood) totaling an estimated > $100,000,000 and now the Football Stadium is called (take a guess first...) Boone Pickens Stadium. The first donation went towards the stadium, the rest is being used to buy the entire real estate across the street from the stadium to build an "athletic village" (WTF does that mean?). Academics are of not much importance to alumni.
Also, we do have internet (Cox, SBC, OSU all provide broadband).
There is more then just desert and flat land.
We do have paved roads. Well, mostly.
Gas is barely $2.00 here
Nothing is more then 15 minute drive away.
5 miles from Main St. going East is considered in Tulsa
5 Miles from Main St. going West is considered to be at the Country Club
Cost of living is dumbfoundingly cheap
In state students barely have to pay a grand for tutition
With 1/100th of an inch of snow, they cancel school (YES!). The city does not have any salt or salt trucks.
There is no Best Buy
There is no mall
There is a Blockbuster, but it sucks
The Hastings was just renovated and is very nice
No one on eBay is ever selling something worth picking up (which sucks)
The craigs list for OKC and Tulsa suck
When you say pop, people think dad
when you say soda, people think Dr. Pepper
You are not cool unless you have a hockey puck shaped wear on the back pocket of your jeans
Pretty young ladies are everywhere
At first I was willing to do anything to leave this place, but now, I am searching for a post graduation job so I can stay here. I like the pretty females. And the people of course.
I grew up for the most part in the Twin Cities. I used to miss it until the other day when it was 80+ degrees here. :) I have learned to live without 2+ feet of snow.

Yup the douche bags at EB Games are dips. Would not replace my dead pixel PSP and claimed it did not have any when looking at it. Sold me a brand new game, but it was used. The guy claimed it was never played.
Never will I ever shop there again.
Hastings is cool. Very nice selection of games and anime.
Speaking of anime, since I last checked no one has returned the samurai champloo vol 1 & 2 or full metal panic vol 6. Criminals.

Thats funny, they tried to pull the same stuff on me with my dead pixel psp. They opened up three boxes right in front of me and all three had dead pixels or bubbles in the screen. I blew my top and started cussing it up and making a huge fuss. They dumb ass big boy manager finanlly said he would open up one more and I had to take it. Luckily it had no problems, ( but I ended up trading it in anyways) I think they were afraid I was going to come back with a gun or something, but at least they dont fuck with me straight to my face. Althought they did tell me I was on the first xbox 360 shipment and now when I recentely checked they said I wasnt. Good thing I planned on canceling anyways. But yeah generally I try to stay far away from that horrible store. I just want to pimp slap that chubby manager off his high horse. Glad Im not the only one who sees it. As to the anime at hastings Iv noticed there large selection but I personnaly dont rent much anime. Although I love Ninja scrolls. Feudal Japan is fun.

I rent the $1.99 stuff and return it early for the $0.50 credit. Sure beats buying the discs individually. No way could I afford that. I wish I could though. I am in the process of graduating and finding a job, so I maybe able to justify it soon.
I returned my PSP to Edmund EB by UCO and got a new one. The lady I talked to working there that day actually was respectful. I was shocked! Highly recommended and worth the 30-40 minute drive. She told me from now on Sony will replace any PSP with dead pixels and they (EB) only will do it if there is less then 2 (I guess that would mean 1).
I buy all my games and stuff from Hastings now. At least they don't bug the crap out of you and reseal games or try and sell used as new. And don't push warranty crap on you. God, I can't believe I got that shitty warranty for my PSP. Worthless.
I just hope Gamestop fires the peons working at our EB.
There is a Funcoland at Eastland Mall in Tulsa still. However, I think it is just a Gamestop too cheap to change the sign.

yeah, Hastings is nice. Seem to carry a lot of the 'unusual' titles as well, e.g., shooters, RPGs, Neo Geo pocket color, etc. Prices can be a bit irregular.. sometimes cheaper, sometimes $10 more. I still hate the $9 used PS2 games that probably should be $5, etc..

Got another Okie here. Originally from BA but I live in Edmond now going to Central university. Oh how I miss Vintage Stock.
If this can be considered a deal, I found a couple of Persona 2's complete, and an Arc of the Lad collection(games and case only, no big box and extras) at an EB games around here, I didn't buy them cause I'm not really interested in them. I did see an Intelligence Qube, disc only, but it was 40 bucks..if it had the case or something I would've gotten it.

Proud Normanite here, attending the University of Oklahoma. The OK stereotypes are fine by me, because I love it here and I don't want any of those assholes from other states moving to OK.
Here's a great quote:
"I've spent most of my life living in cities where people are obsessed with looking down on people from everywhere else. You get so used to doing it that you start to believe it's simply what everyone does. It makes for an atmosphere of unwelcome that penetrates much of our modern life. It's a shame really because a couple days in Oklahoma will open your eyes to how much better it would be if the rest of the country was filled with a few more people from Oklahoma."

Hmm, OKC bad traffic?
It is nothing like Tulsa this time of year. Tulsa over by 71st and Memorial is pure living hell. It will take you an hour or more sometimes just to get off of the exits in this area. Then, you'll move about 10 ft per hour after you get on memorial or 71st right in front of Best Buy/Circuit City/Woodland Hills. Yup, we have Best Buy and a Mall here.
When I say traffic I don't mean horse and buggies either. Real world modern cars that run on fuel from a gas station. Actually most are big ass SUV or trucks.

Yea, not terribly bad but I forgot that OKC is bigger than most of what I have around me - it compared to Baton Rouge traffic but the problems I ran into were due to construction plus the exit I was suposed to get off at doesn't exist anymore

The traffic is a lot better over by the Circuit City and Best Buy near 41st and Sheridan, near Promenade Mall. I basically do all my electronics shopping in this square-mile radius or so. There's an EBGames in Promenade, Best Buy behind the mall, Circuit City across the street, and a used media store called Vintage Stock in the same shopping center as CC. Not to mention DEALS, where nothing is over $1. God I love that store.

I got it from the Crossroads location (I-35 and I-240). However, I've been back since and didn't notice any. There were only a couple on the day the sale went into effect. That being said, you still might check. I've notice a couple of TRU's replenishing some of the clearance titles. This same location was restocking Elf last time I was in.
I think it has something to do with the fact that NONE of the employees working there had any knowledge of the sale taking place. I even asked one of them the night before the price drops and he was adamant that there were no price drops coming. Works in our favor, I suppose!

If you go to Tulsa, hit the TRU on 71st and Mingo. I saw 1 copy of Pikmin 2 in a bin with a bunch of other price drop games a few days ago.
Yeah, Crossroads was cleaned out when I went. I called them before Christmas and they didn't have any of FFII, DOAU, or RE4. Kinda made me sad. But, I went up there and scored Polarium for DS. That's great fun and not advertised on the main list. I just want an RE4; the Quail Springs store had plenty one day, 0 the next. Damn hoarders.

I don't think Stillwater Sears has video games.
I was at Quail Springs and briefly stopped by Sears. My mom and I looked at the video games (she wants a DS, bad!), but were only looking for a couple certain items they did not have.

Just got Friday's News Press (I know it's Saturday) with the Hastings circular. Somethings of interest:
30% off used Games
30% off used DVD
They had special UNTIL NOON ONLY coupons that were decent, but I did not even get the paper til 3:30 PM. Snooze you lose I guess.
I'm going Monday to pick and choose, hopefully it won't be empty when I get there.

I already owned that... probably worth a look if you don't have it, just for the versions of columns, fantasy zone, alien syndrome and I suppose space harrier is ok... just a shame they couldn't have put the original games on the disc in addition to the 3D remakes..

Yeah, as of yesterday it was pretty wiped out again. I think there was still a $9.98 copy of NBA Ballers for PS2 and a few PC games that have been there for 2 weeks or so (nothing major)... haven't seen any indication of DS games on sale, either... though, and I probably shouldn't say it on here (for fear it'll put the same thoughts in your minds), I'm actually waiting for they day they put those 4 gameboy players on clearance... I mean, geez, $49.99 for a gameboy player that runs only on a gamecube system that pretty much no one owns as their primary system which plays games for a gameboy system on your tv that are one iteration of gameboy games old as well... why hasn't this thing been dropped to $29.98 or $19.98 yet? Its like when they had all of those PSX games for $14-19 that no one was buying...
I'm guessing you might have better luck at the moment going across the streat and buying the PC stuff at Big Lots that people were posting on in other forums on here. I haven't been there yet, but I'm gonna guess they have stuff.
I suppose I'm happy I was lucky enough to get VJ2... Though I'm guessing the real craziness at target will be when that Wolrd Bizarre stuff (or whatever it is) drops to 50% off... even at 30% they are starting to sell a lot of stock... at 50%, I'm expecting most of it to be sold save a few of the tacky items. Some of the carpets are rather cool looking... not really for me at $179.99 full price or $125.99 or so at 30% off, but at $89, they are far more reasonable... same with a lot of the furnature. I swear they overprice the stuff just because they know they are only going to stock it for a short period of time and figure they'll sell it when they trick people into believing it is 30% off or whatever....

more for us, heh... I've bought a ton of games for under $5 on that endcap... This is probably the most I've spent for a game on that endcap, though... but I suppose it did meet my own rule:
If the IGN score is greater than the dollar amount of the game, it generally is worth picking up... e.g., pretty much any game that's $5 or less is worth buying (if nothing else for use as trade bait, etc.), and certainly in the case of viewtiful joe 2, $7.50 is fine.

well, actually target did drop the gloabal furnature stuff to 50% in norman. still seems a bit pricy for me, but it was selling to a lot of teh after church crowd that was walking in. a quick check of the endcap did reveal a $7.48 copy of viewtiful joe 2 and a $6.48 copy of sega classics collection that people had 'hidden' behind some of the other games on the endcap.

If anyone is looking for Mario Kart DS bundles, I found about 7 of them at the KMart in Shawnee. I asked if you got a free game with it as you do the other DS systems this week. However, the clerk looked at the sign for some time and decided that he couldn't do it. The only coupon in question is the expired $10 off $29.99 coupon that you were able to use. Target is a goldmine. Today I got Meteos for 15 bucks and Viewtiful Joe 2 for 7. I waited a week for Meteos to go down again, but there were 2 the last time I went and I only saw 1 today. Now all I got to do is wait for the DS Lite to come in the mail.
Physics, they had Tiger Woods for the DS for $20 and Polarium for $15 as well. I'm not 100% sure if they sold that Meteos, I just couldn't find it. This is the newer Target on NW Expressway.
BTW, anyone trade games at Gamerush? That place gives back gold for trade ins. I have DOA (360) and Battlefield 2 just waiting to go back for some games for the DS.
Also, anyone around yonder find Phoenix Wright? I've searched high and low for that bugger.

Stopped by a Sears on Reno in Midwest City.
Quite a few Donkey Konga 2 with Bongo and 1 Donkey Konga with Bongo. Without the Bongo it was $17.97. Also, had 1 set of Bongo.
I picked up Mario Power Tennis for Gamecube for $26.92 out the door.
No Dragon Quest, Burnout Legends, but they did have Burnout Revenge for Playstation 2 marked 14.97 or 19.97 (can't remember).
I saw a Wario Ware for GBA in a largish box, but was marked $29.xx and I did not want to spend any more money, so I did not bother. Pokemon XD was $29.97 and Custom Robo was $24.97. Mario Golf was $19.97. Metroid Prime 2 and Paper Mario, if I remember correctly, $29.97.
Kirby for GBA was $14.97 (the newer one) as was Super Mario Bros 3 for GBA, as were quite a few other GBA games, but nothing of interest.
I don't have an Xbox, but Outrun 2 caught my eye for $14.97.
That is about all I can recall.
Also stopped at Gamestop in that same mall where Sears is. On the website it says they have a Phoenix Wright, but it's defective. So, don't bother.

Well, there are two game xchange locations close to norman, one in norman, and one right off of I35 in moore I believe... I think the norman one has the smell you speak of... I'm guessing it is the cleaner they use, perhaps on the carpets?... I will say that I usually avoid them because I've always found them to be overpriced, but i have found some real winners as well, e.g.,
Space Megaforce and Super Buster Bros. (both SNES) for $4.99.. may not seem like much, but especially with Space Megaforce, it is probably the best SNES shooter and possibly better than anything on TG16 at that time (which generally garner a lot more attention). Again, only happens because they don't know what they have, and most gamers don't know what they are missing... kinda rminds me of a game like Amplitude (PS2).. Great game that no one really knows about and really cheap when you find one.
Other than that, I've found their games, especially older games, sub par price wise... especailly since everything older they sell is basically cart-only (which sucks for the prices they want)... It seems they always want a good $2-4 more than they really should, and sometimes their prices just make no sense, e.g., like with common games from two generation old systems...
the local Pawn shops seem a bit better IMOP. Norman had a few shops where finding games like FF3 or SoM on SNES was the norm... well, at least until about a year ago... they've smartened up a bit and ebay'd up... though ive still gotten some steals (Metal Slug 4/5 for PS2 for $15 unopened!!)...

Ilovephysics
02-28-2006, 06:41 PM
well, I think so, though mainly if you can get it cheap... I think the game is certainly fun, but definately 'shallow'... e.g., just a lot of blasting and dying and blasting some more.
Certainly, it isn't anything special graphically in terms of PS2 games or even 2D games of the past few years... I don't think it is 'rare' by any stretch either, but this is the type of game that you could see being tough to get a few years down the line. I think that was why I jumped on it when I did... the $15 was enough of a reason anyway, but as a game trader as well, this is definately the type of game someone will want to trade for down the line... e.g., I can easily see someone trading almost any current PS2 game *for* this game if they don't already own it... these MS games are very much like that.... something about this arcade-like experience a game like this offers that people really like.

On Norman pawn shops, the key word in your post is *were*... I would probably shock you with all of the amazing finds I had in some of these shops in Norman for the period between 2000 to 2002...
Unfortunately, it is a bit more bleak now, but not hopeless:
1) Most shops are wise to ebay/gamestop pricing for rare stuff and even common stuff and accessories. Some actually have tried to tell me that I needed to pay them the gamestop price and that was the best they could do (as if their tiny pawn shop gets 1/1000th of the traffic.. I told them no thanks, I could do better online, to which they claimed they didn't believe me.. I did (actually got two for the same price), they still have the item in question lying around in their store because they were stubborn idiots...)...
I have even had someone LOOK UP a game on Ebay in front of me just to see if there was a reason why I wanted that specific game (this place no longer exists, thankfully... nothing like a no-tooth everything-bad-about-oklahoma stereotype pawn shop employee trying to pull this crap)... lucky for me, the game was common and I was just grabbing it for someone online, but the point is, this type of crap is B.S. on several levels... don't put it past them, especially the younger employees or owner's kids... sometimes the older ones just want the sale knowing that either way they make money...
In any event, if you happen to find stadium events or bubble bath babes or bubble bobble part 2 in a bunch of nes games, it may be better to either (a) ask them to buy every NES game they have, or (b) buy a bunch of games and put the game right on top using reverse psychology figuring they'll be pessimistic enough to assume you are hiding the game you really want (if they were gonna check them all, they'd do that just the same.. and pray no one has it listed on Ebay).
2) More competition. When I was doing this back in 2000, I was mostly looking for myself and most of the Ebay folks in the area were only searching the pawn stores for Disney VHS stuff. Pawn shop people didn't naturally assume I was looking to sell stuff on Ebay... Now, it seems anytime I walk in the door, they see 'young kid... must be trying to find stuff for Ebay'...
3) It really only takes one additional knowledgable person shopping on a somewhat regular basis to pretty much screw you out of finding something special when you go in... I'd say it's about 1 in 4 that I'll spot something even modest... it used to be, IMOP, closer to every time a few years back I'd find something unbelievable by current standards.
4) OTOH, Norman being a college town also means newer gaming stuff possibly getting pawned soon... so it works both ways... older stuff probably tapped, but plenty of solid PS2 and XB games hopefully in the future..
5) New games (PS2, XB) seem to blend together... if they don't know or they screw up, it's $10-15. That sometimes sucks, but sometimes it's great. Just remember, they don't want to be stuck with this crap, especially sports games. I think you can get a lot of leeway in some areas...
******
Other stuff
1) Went to the Big Lots in Norman, nothing left in the PC games area of note.
2) Hastings in Norman has one 'special' used game for $29.99... its probably the rarest PS2 game on the market (and really, it should not be available for sale). Not Rez, nor Disgaea.
3) Well, on the plus side for game xchange, they do have a lot of stuff... if you guys find a copy of Parappa for psx, let me know. They also do get a lot of their games from pawn shops. I think in many cases, pawn shops may be selling their stuff to GX now more frequently than before... pawn shops used to sell some stuff to the Gamestop in Norman mall, too, as I recall way back in 2000 ish.. now, that GS doesn't even carry used older games...
4) Another thing you guys might consider is looking into arcade game autions in the state. Norman's CC fairgrounds sometimes has arcade auctions... usually you can get a decent working cab and board for under $200. I missed out on a 4 slot MVS last time because they were only taking cash, but they more often than not take checks and cards as well... Also, while on the subject, in case you were wondering what to do with boards (i.e., if you didn't have the space for a whole cabinent), you could try something like this:
http://www.massystems.com/SuperNova.html
basically, you get lucky, buy a jamma game cheap, use this to play the board.
duffclown70

An arcade cabinet would be AMAZING to have. Under $200? Yikes. Where's this at (not too familiar with Norman)
Also, what was that PS2 game? Contra, Klonoa? I remember buying Contra Shattered Soldier from Ultimate Electronics for 15 bucks when they had their close out. I curse myself for opening it. Only played the bugger 1 time.
Man, an MVS for $200. That'd be amazing. Then you'd have to pay 1k for MVS of Metal Slug:drool:
Also, what goods can you find at Big Lots? There's a couple near me but I never go in there.

The PS2 game is not Contra. That game is not even close to rare. Disgaea can still be bought new as can Rez.

actually, I was referring to "The Guy Game" on PS2. I consider this perhaps one of the toughest PS2 games to get simply because it was my understanding no one is supposed to sell it due to that lawsuit... e.g., the people who have it have it, and those who want to sell it are pretty much out of luck...
As far as auctions, yeah, the Cleveland County Fairgrounds on robinson is one place: http://www.clevelandcountyfair.org/
usually has an auction or two from time to time in addition to the general flee market and consignment sale stuff... I'm thinking if there was a demand for it (arcade auctions that is), they would do it more often (may not hurt to email them about it).
The few that i have gone to were reasonably well attended (30-40 people), but most of the people were not really there for the arcade auction, they were there for the farmer's market and just sorta walked over unprepared for what was going to happen... OTOH, some were very prepared, and there was at least the outside chance that a few were just shill bettors trying to jack up the prices a bit for the people who didn't know what was up...
There are more auctions in Texas outside of Dallas in Mesquite... Not just cabinents, but also pinball and sometime casino or pool tables and items...
usually, you want to go to these things with a flashlight (can be used to check stuff out), a long extention cord (plug in stuff that isn't), and a truck that can carry an arcade cabinent... these things are heavy and usually will take at least 2 well off individuals to move them around.. a wheel/cart thing is a lifesaver and you'd be well off to bring one of those as well. Note, usually once you buy, it is your responsibility to transport these items... I actually made quite a bit of money just helping people move the stuff because they had not clue what they just walked into when buying an arcade game.
Usually cabinents are fairly cheap... $50-250 is pretty much standard from what I've found.. This may sometimes also depend on the game.. i.e., I've seen Karate Champ go for $50 in crappy condition, but really, people were just basing this on the cabinent itself... way I figure it, the cabinent alone may be worth the $50 if you ever wanted to make you own Mame machine or otherwise... Sometimes the better shape games and specific games go for the highest... i.e., a good condition Galaga or Mrs. Pacman will command a lot (because they are easy for many to resell at a huge markup)... consider yourself incredibly lucky if you get one of these for under $200.
The things I like to look for are the MVS boards/cabinents, i.e.:
http://cgi.ebay.com/2-SLOT-NEO-GEO-JAMMA-ARCADE-MOTHER-BOARD-MVS_W0QQitemZ6258108632QQcategoryZ3945QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
what makes these cool is that MVS carts are really cheap (though many knockoffs/nonofficial are also sold) compared to AES carts and basically you just plug them in and play... (assuming you have something like a supergun as well)
With that said, home console games are getting really good at putting out arcade treasures collections. And mame machines as well (assuming you don't mind the whole illegal rom crap)..
Ilovephysics
03-03-2006, 05:19 PM
personally, I think the prospect of getting a pinball machine is better... arcade game roms, etc., never work for pinball machines.. e.g., you'll never get even close to the true pinball game experience unless you get a pinball machine...

The only GameCrazy I know of in OKC is located just South of Penn and SW 89. They are pretty good about honoring requests for ordering stuff. Some time back, I ordered a used XBox memory card and was able to get one within a week. When it came in they gave me call to let me know it had arrived. I like dealing with GameCrazy, but it seems Best Buy has better deals ($10 coupon anyone??).

looks like in moore this weekend (fri, sat, sun) there will be an arcade game sale at some place called storage U10 at 213 NE 12th. no clue about costs of items, so it may be a waste of time or heavily overpriced... hard to tell.. can't seem to locate the place, wondering if this is somewhere between norman and moore on sooner rd/12th.

nah, that's the best I could get from the newspaper classified ad with regard to the location. no phone number, either.
I tried looking it up on my mapping program, but I don't even know if there is a 12th ave in Moore.... but I could see how someone from the area might want to call Sooner Rd. something like 12th if they used to live in Norman or if it is just north of norman... (12th in Norman becomes Sooner Rd. as you head toward Moore).
As I have said, I just saw this sale in a local classified ad newspaper that comes to my house every week. I wish I could give you more info... Personally I know I'd love to go on friday if I had a better sense of where it was... There were at least 2 games they listed that I'd be interested it... I'd still suggest bringing an extension cord, truck, etc.. no clue if these items will work, if they can be plugged in easily, and I'm sure you'll need to transport them out of there as soon as you buy them... might consider bringing a strong friend too.. as noted in another post of mine, these things weigh a lot... picking up a dolly from Lowes for $19 isn't such a bad idea either...
I know someone who lives in that general 12th/Sooner area, I might be able to ask them what that storage place on 12th/sooner is called... my guess is that someone just has a ton of stuff in a storage container/garage location and wants to dump it all... as such, I'm expecting credit cards are out, and I'd probably rather pay with cash than a check (not to mention, they might want the cash for as-is games as well).

Oklahoma legislature passes games bill
Measure that would classify violent games with pornography passes the House without a single opposing vote.
While a piece of Utah legislation seeking to have video games with "inappropriate violence" classified under the same statute that applies to pornography fell into legislative limbo (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145293.html) earlier this month, a similar Oklahoma bill has gathered a full head of steam.
Last week, the Oklahoma House of Representatives approved HB3004 unanimously, with 97 Representatives voting for it, none against it, and four excused from the voting. Utah's bill faced slightly tougher opposition in its House of Representatives, passing by a vote of 56-8, with 11 legislators absent or not voting.
The Oklahoma bill makes it illegal for stores to sell or allow minors to view any game with inappropriate violence to minors. If passed, retailers would not even be able to display the games for sale unless the bottom two-thirds of their covers were obscured by "blinder racks" in the same way that adult magazines are.
While the bill's formatting on the matter is a little different, the text bears a striking resemblance (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6142981.html) to that of Utah's piece of legislation when it comes to defining inappropriate violence. According to the law, that term would be defined as any depiction in a game that, when taken as a whole, has the following characteristics:
"a. the average person eighteen (18) years of age or older applying contemporary community standards would find that the interactive video game or computer software is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community with respect to what is suitable for minors, and
b. the interactive video game or computer software lacks serious literary, scientific, medical, artistic, or political value for minors based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:
(1) is glamorized or gratuitous,
(2) is graphic violence used to shock or stimulate,
(3) is graphic violence that is not contextually relevant to the material,
(4) is so pervasive that it serves as the thread holding the plot of the material together,
(5) trivializes the serious nature of realistic violence,
(6) does not demonstrate the consequences or effects of realistic violence,
(7) uses brutal weapons designed to inflict the maximum amount of pain and damage,
(8) endorses or glorifies torture or excessive weaponry, or
(9) depicts lead characters who resort to violence freely"
The bill's definition of inappropriate violence specifically mentions games, so similar depictions in books, movies, or music would not be covered. If passed, store owners caught selling such games to minors would be charged with a misdemeanor and fined $500 on a first or second offense, and $1,000 on future offenses.
Having passed the House, the bill has now moved to the Oklahoma Senate.

It really doesn't shock me too much, but like most Oklahoma bills presented under the guise to try and 'protect minors', I'm sure it is faulty. Lawmakers in this state have often thrown out bills to curb underage drinking, etc., without any real thought as to the flaws of said bills and whether the bill actually is doing what they 'think' it is doing... Certainly, no lawmaker in this state wants to walk back to their voters and have someone claim 'hey, these guys are pro- violent games', which you know is what would happen in a bible belt state. Rather, I'm sure those who are against the bill are just passing it hoping that someone will challenge it later.
For these bills, the key issue in my mind that really will come into play is in the 'artistic' merit of games... clearly, lawmakers are too afriad to attack violent mainstream movies (i.e., the Sin City sort) or music (heck, most of it) because they know they can't avoid the nightmare that is that these media are viewed as 'artistic'... To me, there is nothing additionally 'artistic' about most graphic movies and the better-made graphic epic games like God of War. Both cost millions. Both feature just about everything on those above lists... but since one is a game (which is rooted in historical figures, and prominantly features the violence and sex that mythology has often been associated with), it gets treated like porn, while the other is considered 'art' despite being 100% fictional. Sorry, I don't buy it.
In my mind, the real issue is and always has been the rating of games versus the rating of movies. Parents understand the Movie rating system... To me, instead of covering up violent games, why not change the ratings to those comparable to movies... We've tried the whole 'MA' thing... it doesn't register. If a game like God of War was an R-rated game (which I believe it is), there shouldn't be any confusion... To me, I've only known of 2-3 games that really ever pushed the R-rating limit in my mind, and one of them, Grand Theft Auto: SA, was still only pushing it because of the 'Hot Chocolate' game that 99% of all owners would have never even been able to access anyway... and even among those who did, they were SUPPOSED to be MA game players anyway!! So a whole bunch of lawmakers got upset about a group of 17+ year olds playing a hidden mini-game that they really never even played anyway because they couldn't readily access it! No kids should have been playing this game in the first place...
More to the point, the issue shouldn't be coving games up and going after any game with a drop of blood, it should be enforcing that MA games should not be sold to minors. That's it! And if that means calling MA games R-rated games just to make sure parents understand, fine... What bothers me is that plenty of games fall under these 'guidelines' and are clearly not 'bad games'. Does anyone honestly believe a game like Diablo on PC is similar to porn? Probably not, and if Diablo were a movie, it'd probably be an R-rated movie (no swearing, and just killing arbitrary monsters, say as in Army of Darkness)... and as a game, it was MA... but does this game really need to be covered up where as any kid in the world can look at any R-rated movie?
Ilovephysics
03-21-2006, 04:57 PM
And hey, the other thing to keep in mind is that I wonder what this means for something like Ebay, e.g., what is stopping kids from buying violent games from the internet? And what about those who sell violent games over the web to minors... how exactly can a store verify age of a child other than to ask they confirm? Kids are smart. They'll figure out ways around this if they really want to buy these games...

Some decent games for $4.99 at Best Buy in Norman, especially for XBox owners. NFS Underground, Medal of Honor Rising Sun, a decent number of other EA games... Seemed to be plenty of the two I mentioned, so no real need to panic. I think they will honor that price for the PS2 versions as well.

well, I usually buy anything that is cheaper than its IGN online review score if it is a genre that really interest me...
I am enjoying Medal of Honor: RS. I don't know if I would have wanted to spend full price on it (graphically, after playing Call of Duty 2 for example, it just seems limited and flat, but hey, that's what you get with a 3 year old war game.. I'm sure if I hadn't played some of the newer stuff, this would be great in its own way), but for $5 it wasn't bad. But I would agree that even at $5, sometimes these games are just best to pick up and use as trade items...
Ilovephysics
03-29-2006, 12:39 AM
With Radiata, almost any RPG IMOP is usually worth a pickup if on the cheap from my experience with game trading... someone almost always wants RPGs, especially an unopened or excellent condition (i.e., once or twice played) RPG, even if the score is modest... I know on gametz I could easily turn around and sell the game for shipped without even thinking. Smallish profit, to be sure if I wanted to turn around quickly, but say $5 net or so per every game... usually I'll use the profit to justify the puchases of my own copies of the cheap games that I'll keep.

yeah, I was thinking about buying KHII. Reviews have been pretty shaky on the difficulty side, e.g., far too easy... the Tron, Steamboat Willie, and Pirates OTC levels sound great, though...
OTOH, something tells me this will be GH eventually because I have no doubt it will sell regardless of the reviews (anything square, as well as most things disney), and I would probably be best suited holding onto my money for now, buying SOTC when it goes GH, and then buying KHII a year or two from now when it is GH... I'm also interested in buying a DS anyway, and I'm guessing I may want to trade for/buy a copy of Kingdom Hearts on GBA first before I play KHII since the stories are all linked...

oh well, $1.99 for Medal of Honor:RS isn't too shabby. I guess I'm upset I overpaid for it a few dollars.. heh. Though you are right about gas money nowadays... going from OKC to Norman would probably be about 40 miles round trip which for most cars can be almost 2 gallons...e.g., at current OK gas prices, you are looking at $4-5... that doesn't even count the effort on your part... It really does hardly seem worth most trips unless you were planning on buying several games or knew it was a crazy deal that was going to save you upwards of $15 on something you wanted...

No real solid DS or GBA games. Lots of World Championship Poker 2 and Grand Theft Auto copies on PS2.. I think Dragonball Z Bud 2 was $10, as was Twisted Metal Black... must have pulled these out of deep storage...

anyway for anyone interested, picked up a DS Lite this afternoon from the super target in edmond, ok at 2nd and bryant...quail springs was a no go, as they said they weren't allowed to sell them until june 11...edmond store had them sitting in the case right next to the other games
on another note is anyone finding the d-pad a little janky...i know it isn't just my unit because the demos at best buy and target had the same feeling...kinda loose...feel like if you are pushing right, could easily have some up or down action also....

have not looked for DS lite. I'll pick one up eventually since I gave my DS to my mom for mother's day.

Alright, I had it with these magazines.
Is there anyone in Oklahoma that wants them?
I will be going to the city (Tulsa or OKC) on Sunday (maybe, but doubtful Saturday) and I am willing to give them away for free or small compensation (maybe a Diet Coke or 2 for the ride home? Or Meteos!!!).

Just found this out. Today is the last day, but Hastings has all used DVD's and games at 30% off.

^^Some GREAT deals to be had there. They had History of Violence, Capote, Good Night Good Luck, and Squid and the Whale all $7 a piece. Thing is, they are marked used, but they haven't even been used!! Clean disc and a perfect condition case.

I almost picked up The Warriors for XBox while I was in Hastings today. Now I'm glad I waited, as they'll have Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition with The Warriors for Free for $15.99. SWEET!

didn't catch this until today. I have not seen all that much at Hastings or Target recently.. a few cheap games, but nothing that really stands out at either location in Norman. No good auctions in the area either... most of the classified ads for video games/arcade games have been poor as well.... I'll probably be selling a few game systems at my garage sale, though, if and when I do have it... heh.

Not all that much at Target in Norman as of yesterday. A few copies of Madden 2005 for PS2 (2005, not 2006) for $14.95 or something like that. Maybe if it dropped to $4.98 it would be worth it, but it has been a long time since I've seen a game at this target for under $5.

Myself and a couple of friends absolutely looted the GBA/DS selection in both Tulsa CCs, but if your interests lie with PS2/Xbox, they still had a lot of good stuff at the one in Southroads Mall.

yeah, but the gas alone to drive there would defeat the purpose in going. Anything you can think of off hand that they did have? I'm still interested in finding a cheap Meteos...
As for Norman's Hastings, they did have a newly filled 75% off bin with mostly XB and PS2 EA sports titles for about $5 each... Madden, Fifa, NBA Street games, etc. a few other accessories like some GC controllers, etc.

Thanks! So anybody been to the CC on 41st? I went to the one on 71st monday and they were pretty much cleaned up on $9 games. I'm hoping this sale that actually starts tommorrow has some pictured games in the CC ad, cause if they are, I'm invading Wal-mart.

lol. Do you mean $9 junk or just junk in general?
Does any body know where I can find some cases for my DS games, I saw some at a CC in Texas when I visited my relatives a month ago, but I didn't have five bucks.
Oh and the Sears in Woodland had some cheap DS games, I got Pac-Pix for $5. They also had the phat DS charger for $3. I didn't get to see anything else because I had to leave, but I just thought I'd let ya guys know.
Also, dont bother with the EB 5 day sale - it's all crap.

Target in Norman looked a bit reloaded as of yesterday. Most of the games were still $9.99+, but a few more GC and PS2 titles.. almost all of the games were GH/PC type titles. Saw about 3 copies each of Fight Night, Ace Combat 4, I believe.

Hey guys (and girls?),
I'm new here, and posting from Okc. I saw the thread and thought I would check it out. If you don't mind, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the most for my PS2 console w/ memory card, 2 controllers, and 3 games.
GS is a rip.
But you all knew that.
Thanks guys (and girls)

Always nice to see another CAG in the OK. I would try Wherehouse music. According to the CAG WIKI (http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Trade_in_values) the slim system is getting $90 there. I would also check the WIKI for the best trade in value for the games as the prices fluctuate from store to store. I know you're not a fan of GS, but EB/GS has a trade 3 get an extra 10$ promotion going on until 7/25. Something to think about.

The CC on 41st and yale in Tulsa had about 30 games TOTAL left from the 8.96 sale. I picked up Madden 05 on DS, it was the only DS game left with about 5 copies. Most were xbox games.

Well, another option to keep in mind is you could go to a site like www.gametz.com, the Game Trading Zone... It'll be tough as a brand new user to sell your system until you build up some trades and trust, but it is good for future reference, especially if you are not a heavy eBay user... It offers a decent chance to find someone willing to swap/trade games as well as buy games, etc.. There are fewer registered users than CAG (GTZ has ballpark 10,000 as opposed to 60,000+ on CAG), but the general and trading forums on GTZ are far more active IMOP.
I'd still wonder if Ebay wasn't the best option... it looks like stock photo-old-style non-slim line PS2 systems are selling for $60+ with about $20 tacked on to that for shipping... I dunno what GS offers, but that seems decent if you have such an account.

Thanks for the info. I sold it to game X change for $125.00/sytem, hookups, memory card, 3 games.
GS tried to give me $50.00 for the same deal, and were pissed that I wanted cash.
I called the GS store up after the deal and told the manager that told me I wouldn't get anyone to pay more than his offer from anyone about the deal, and he was speachless.
I told him to kiss my ass.
So thanks for all the tips, shopping around definately helped.

Wow.. out of curiousity, what were the games and how much did you get specifically from game xchange for the system and the games/memory cards? I was considering getting a slimline ps2 system to replace my old one, and if I can get $70+ in cash, it'll put me about 1/2 way there... plus I have a few random games I could toss in to make up the difference...

well, I actually think (well, KNOW) that I got a better deal than I was supposed to. The cashier was new, and told me his trade-in was $90.00 for the PS2 (which was probably for the slim, and I had the fat one), and that was for cash! I stood there and acted like I knew it all along.
Then, he looked up the games (madden 06, THUG 2, NBA street Vol 3), memory card, and extra controller, and gave me another 35.00!
I stumbled out of the store before I had a heart attack. (or the manager ran after me, demanding his money back)
I'm pretty sure they were only supposed to give me 45.00 for the system. The guy probably looked at an older trade in page (he was new, and the store looked like no one had been in there in months)
So

If you have a few games, you probably have a good chance of getting 70 for it all. Just don't go to GS, they fucking RIP YOU OFF.

I've bought Amplitude at TRU 3 times at either $2.99 or $1.99 (twice for me, once for a trade)... but I'd say that even at $10, it is a steal.

Forgot to post this, but Wal-Mart in Stillwater has a bin of games on clearance and a clearance shelf of games in the back of electronics. I didn't look for anything because I can't think of any games I actually am willing to buy right now except Mario Soccer and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology/Collection.
