Usually you have to be a regular forum contributor (with HELPFUL posts), be on the forums regularly, and then just hope that the site's webmaster hearts you ;)

The day you become moderator is the day a large portion of CAG leaves to make their own website.

I am not sure how Cheapy picks them. Some mods I see on all the time like Shrike. Others I rarely see online, I see regular posters post more often than some mods.

If these mods become less active then there would probably be a 'new draft'. The mods now are very different than the mods from a year ago. Some old mods I haven't seen for many months now.

bostonfrontier, you can't just petition to be a mod on the site. CheapyD and the other mods work together to choose those that they see fit to help with the site. We found this out in another thread like this in April when they played a April Fools Joke were everyone could see the Mods Lounge.

So, in the end, bf, it's a combination of circumstance (does CAG need more mods?), favortism (who do the mods recommend?), availability (are these people consistently on CAG?), and helpfulness (not only being helpful, but not being a name-calling homophobic asshole for no good reason).

I can see you succeeding in availability, but you've got a LOOONG heirarchy to climb in order to even be jokingly considered for a mod position. You probably not only have to be a far more considerate poster from now on, but you should probably publicly make amends for being such a complete and total bastard.

Just to add a few feelings of my own on the subject... someone who'd like to be mod, usually loves the site and wishes to contribute their time to the site.
A moderator isn't given power when the person is thought to be likely to abuse it.

To the OP:

Cheapy and the other current mods decide when they need another mod due to growth of the site, when one leaves CAG or "retires" from being a mod, or there's more work than needs to be handled by the current group of mods.

Cheapy and the other current mods have conversation among themselves about who they think would be a good fit for the position, people they think would be an asset to the site and offer up assistance in moderating the forums and dealing with issues related to the site. They decide on how many candidates they need, and they ask them if they accept or not. If they accept, they're made a mod. If not, then they move onto the next candidates in the list.

You can't campaign to be mod. All that will do is generate heckles and general flaming, as a few of the other posters have so graciously handed you. Cheapy and the other mods know who will make a good mod and who won't, and they'll ask those that will be good fits for the job.

And I wanted to offer a hearty thank-you for all those who given me such nice compliments. Thanks. ;)

P.S. To the OP, thanks for asking me to pay first on my attempt to work out a deal with you. Very enlightening. ;)

It doesn't really matter though... You use such big words to insult people they don't even realized you made the look dumb. No harm, no foul.

As for Jackassery- See: Jaket, SneakyPenquin, and to an extent- Punq and Shrike.

You don't have to be perfect, just be smart, honest and responsible... or in Jakets case, know Cheapy. :-P

Thanks for the link GuilewasNK. I just read this and I can understand Punq sentiment.

Yeah. That was why I asked him why he even bothered with it anymore. I have my theories about NintendoFanGirl. She was really nice and was the definition of "no gimmicks necessary" (see my custom title). She acted like a real person instead trying to act like some internet celebrity or shock jock personality.

I'm pretty sure she left, because CAG went from this friendly place to share deals and videogame discussion, to "I'm an asshole and everyone's gonna know it." people coming in everyday. It just wasn't her style or something she wanted to be around.

Yeah, NintendoFanGirl was cool. She was always posting Nintendo deals that were just barely deals though. That always cracked me up. If she ever found a Nintendo game for $1 cheaper than retail, it had a thread by damn. :)

After reading this, it comes as truly a shocker. Some people must have said some truly idiotic stuff to get punq out. He was great. Probably my second favorite mod after Shrike. The only other mods that I know retired were NintendoFanGirl and Sneaky (which I still don't understand how that one came about. He should have stayed and from what I could tell people should have been kinder.).
Sneaky went off to school and decided that's where his time was better spent, from what I know of.

NFG, I think she decided that she had other things worth doing than dealing with CAG. At least, that's my $0.02.

Exactly. That's what I meant by the fact she was "no gimmicks necessary". Fun is fun but sometimes people don't know when to quit. They let their gimmick get the best of them and pretty soon that is all they are known for. That's part of the reason I like people here like epobirs, Rig and Saucy Jack just to name a few (not trying to leave other good folks out). They are just nice, decent people all the time. I can get along with most anyone but it's nice to have down to earth people here too.

Very enlightening. ;)

So I still got a shot then, contrary to what people on here have said.....

BTW
I think this should go under the FAQs.........

I'm not sure if it needs to go into the FAQs, though I'll pass the idea along.

If either you or GG are good at baking, make some cookies. You're sure to get at least 15,000 more votes that way, because everyone loves cookies.

BTW, my favorite kinds are chocolate chip and peanut butter. Thanks

Just got back and read through the rest of this thread. (And those OTT's)

NFG may have been a bit fed up with some of the posters on this site when she left, but she told me in a few PM's that she had other things in her life that needed more time spent on them. She was always very nice, and I was sad to see her go. (Plus, she worked at Nintendo...can't beat that!)

There are still a lot of people on here that I enjoy seeing/reading their posts. Of course, if there wasn't, I wouldn't stay on here all the time! (Guile, you definitely come to mind first and foremost.)

The mods we have here do a very good job, and I respect them for doing so.

Excellently stated, zewone.
Though really, it seems like it was localized to the off topic areas for quite a while, as the talk of exploits and return fraud had really tapered off.

Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing
swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive
power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some
farcical aquatic ceremony.

Well, we can't have him wield supreme executive power
just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at him!

I mean, if I went around sayin' I was a moderator just
because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd
put me away!

bostonfrontier, if you were to become a mod, you'd have to deal with people like yourself, which you probably wouldn't want to deal with. In all seriousness, there are far more qualified candidates for moderator.

As far as SneakyPenguin goes, I think he took a break from the site. I'm not sure if he's coming back, but if he does, it won't be as a moderator.

And always remember the CheapyD quote - "Don't call us, we'll call you."
