Hey, it's their console, they can do whatever they want with it.

Expect mod chips by Valentine's Day. I expect OS X, Linux and XP machines within 6 months.

very good article. excellent non-bias in depth review. if they could only do for the software as well as the hardware...tired of 1up.com/gamespy.com/ign.com/yourblog.com reviews of games and controllers that read like an expanded marketing blurb from the back of the box or from what the bald headed guy at MS wants. Tools. gamespot.com is approaching that silliness soon, hopefully not.

Oh, so because Gamespot likes Kameo, COD2 and NBA 2K6, they are just shilling for Microsoft? Yeah, ok. Oh, and ANYONE who has played with the 360 controller on demo kiosks loves the thing. I guess those people, including myself, are all tools too?

The decreased size of the 360 controller cramped my hands quick. I have gorilla hands and loved the Duke controller and reluctantly got used to the S controller when I could no longer find a replacement. While it's very nice and I really like the removal of the B&W buttons and moving them to the shoulders I wish it were a tad bigger.

I hear that. the state of game journalism is (almost) a complete joke.

Gaming journalism is an oxymoron.

In many regards they are as much PR for games like Entertainment Tonight, Us and Premiere magazines are for Hollywood.

If you slam stars, movies, directors you suddenly find yourself off the list of interview circuits, being granted "exclusive" interviews and "breaking news" and those things go to publications and media outlets with more "favorable" coverage perceptions.

Stuff the gaming press should have asked but never has; Nintendo, why did you release such a small capacity memory card at launch forcing users to buy multiple cards if they purchased two sports games? Sony, what happened to all the promised features of the PS2 such as the ability to control home entertainment centers, download game levels, movies and music? Where is the AOL/AIM Chat that was promised in 2000? Microsoft, what happened to the widespread support from Japanese developers and mantra that "games are art"?

Other than screen shots, movies, real news like release dates, coverage of trade shows and the occasional interview the gaming press is as sycophantic and entrenched in a symbiotic and parasitic relationship with the gaming industry as the entertainment press is with Hollywood studios, the networks and major cable channels.

That would be nice if they could start making some waves, rather than asking little hypothetical questions or ranting in editorials to absolutely no one.

Maybe if the gaming press did that, we wouldn't get as many trash games on the market or have so many empty promises made by companies. Maybe people would take games a little more seriously.

Gamers are generally a passive bunch and game journalists help perpetuate that stereotype, heh.

Honestly, I don't think I care that much either way.

Your are the only person who shares my opinion of the 360 controller. It just felt off and my hands aren't that big.

Well unless you'd rather play with the PS3 Sailor Moon controller or the Nintendo TV Remote, you'd better get used to the 360 controller.

Uh, no, we wouldn't. Most people in America don't spend their money based on what reviews say. How many people went to see Chicken Little, despite the reviews saying it was crap? How many clueless morons bought Enter the Matrix, even though every single member of the mainstream gaming media trashed it? People are more likely to trust game reviews from Maxim, Stuff, and Playboy than they are EGM, GameSpot or IGN. For the most part, consumers spend their money on what THEY think "looks cool", not based on what some "game nerd" in a magazine thinks. My cousin is the prime example: He'll ask me all the time if a certain game is any good. I'll tell him "No, all the reviews say it's crap", and he'll still buy it because he basically thinks reviewers go for the artsy games or games with innovations that he doesn't care about. It all boils down to the game looking cool in his mind.

Yep, and the PS3 controller was a prototype, and was in no way a finished product. And who knows, it might actually be really comfortable. And as a bonus, just throw it at your mother whenever you want her to take you to Outback....

LOL I thought the same thing when I seen the PS3 control. All these kids you hear about breaking their controller when they throw it at a wall will be in big trouble when this thing comes out.

I wonder if the anandtech crew put this back together and played it or if they are just gonna try to make it into a linux box? I'm guessing option #2.......

As long as the Gaming Media (they are neither press nor journalists) is completely dependant on the video game industry for revenue (advertising), they will never be objective. They get much more money from ads than they do from subscribers.

A Consumer Reports style publication would be objective, or a neutral trade magazine like other, more boring industries have could be ok, but theres not nearly enough interest for either to be profitable. Objectivity doesn't sell, sizzle and hype do.

The best you could hope for would be to always use multiple sources for information and opinions, there are going to be factual sources and hype machine sources, and you'll have to figure out yourself what is right. Just like the real media.

Back to the subject at hand... Xbox-Scene has another guy that opened his, its worth checking out. I'm glad to hear that the DVD drive is an LG-Hitachi, their Xbox drives were decent.
