Understanding Wins/Losses -

Genocidal mentioned it first and godhatesjustyou put it into small list

At the end of the 4 courses, whoever you beat, you get 1 win.
Whoever you lose to, you get 1 loss.

If you're first, in a 4 person game, you will get 3 wins.
Second place, 2 wins and a loss.
Third place, 1 win and 2 losses.
If you get last, in a 4 person game, you will get 3 losses.

I've only been able to play regionally. For some reason I can't connect with anyone on my friends roster.

So far I am 8-0. Also it's probably been mentioned in other threads, but people disconnecting because they are getting smoked is really really lame.

Thats why ranking systems are so bad to put in games, it always brings out the worst in people. If there was no ranking system, people could just chill and play some cart.

Anyway, I'm in the same boat as asianxcore. When I connect to WFC, I can see the friend icon blinking, but if I select a friends race, it never connects me. I can play in all other modes but it won't seem to match up friends for me. Very discouraging at this point.

I went so far as to delete all of the friends from my list except one and then we both tried to initiate a friends race at the same time. Still no dice. I hope whatever that issue is, it gets fixed fast.

I was searching the Nintendowifi forums for this problem and ran across this. Pretty interesting:

When you connect to the NWC, you are connecting to a central Nintendo server (the one whose status is displayed on www.nintendowifi.com) (http://www.nintendowifi.com)/). However, when you request to be paired with other players, that is handled by regional servers that are run by GameSpy, not Nintendo. Thus, it is possible for you to have connection issues even when the server status says it is up (because this is just the central server status). If you get booted while searching for players, it is likely due to an issue with the server in your region that handles these pairings, particularly if this happens after repeated attempts. All of your pairing requests go through your local server, regardless of whether you are searching for regional, worldwide, rivals, or friends. The most common Error Number when this occurs is 85030.

If you have this issue, please call Nintendo's Wi-Fi Customer Service at 800-895-1672 because Nintendo does not know the status of these region servers as they are run by a third party. Reporting these issues as soon as possible can help restore the region servers to operating status as quickly as possible. When you report this issue, Nintendo in turn submits a trouble ticket to GameSpy if they believe that this is indeed the issue.

So here is what we need to do. Someone PM me anytime today if they want to race so I can test this out again. It seems that most everyone else is not having these problems. If I still can't connect, I'm going to call that 1-800 number and report is as an issue and see what happens.

Also, there is a website that takes an uploaded picture and puts it into DS format...and some people use "sprite-sheets" as well

Yeah, good races. I played a round with my friend from TN right after you. His firewall is what was causing our problems. I also put my DS in the DMZ - don;t know if that helped or not.

From what I've gathered, you get a win for each person you beat and a loss for each person you don't.

Example: If you finish 2nd in a circuit with 4 people, you would get 2 wins and 1 loss.

Edit: Yeah, you're awesome at Mario Circuit. I think my strongest courses are DK Pass, Wario Stadium, and N64 Choco Mountain. I was doing well on Luigi's Mansion both times, but at the end near the mud is when I would lose it.

I checked the DHCP table on my router and found the IP address of the DS and put that IP in the DMZ. I'm not sure that it did anything but it was worth a shot.

I played against a R.O.B. player this afternoon in a Worldwide match. He beat me on Luigi's Mansion (by a hair), and then I beat him on Delfino Plaza (with the help of triple mushrooms right at the last turn). Ok, the thing is, he had picked Sky Garden for the second match (I picked Delfino). So he chooses Sky Garden for the 3rd race and I choose it as well to be nice.

All is going well, I'm right behind him for the whole first lap, then all of the sudden he disappears into the clouds. I started laughing b/c I thought he had fallen off and then he suddenly appears in front of me. Ok, so I started to get suspicious and got caught back up with him on the 2nd lap. Sure enough, he flies into the clouds again and ends up ahead of me. So the third lap, I decide I'm going to follow exactly what he does. He does the same thing except I fall into space and he keeps right on trucking.

Apparently, there is a nifty shortcut on Sky Garden about 3/4 of the way through the track. Just as the track is making a right-hand turn, there is a group of clouds straight in front of you that you can "hop" across and cut an entire corner of the track out. I didn't realize he was jumping them, I thought he was using some glitch where Lakitu put him further ahead of me.

So of course on the 4th race he picks Sky Garden again, and it manages to get picked. I still didn't know the trick so he smoked me again. It's pretty lame to pick the same track 3 times in a row on the chance that some MK noob (like me) will not know the shortcut and you can rack up easy wins.

Just a heads up to others that don't know the shortcut so you won't get screwed.

It's a good thing N64's Wario's Stadium isn't on this because I remember a shortcut that would cut out almost half the track.

Does that back alley work though since there is mud in there that slows you down? I guess all the people playing Dry Bones could pull it off since he'll regain his speed in about 1 nanosecond.

Yeah, I'm going to do a little practice on time trial since you get a mushroom to see how hard it is to drift out of that alley.

There is also a shortcut in Bowser's Castle. When you get to the room with the spinning floor (not the spinning column you have to balance on), instead of going into the first exit in front of you, keep going to the right. You'll dodge some fire columns and then go into another hallway with a Thwomp. Avoid him and you'll pop out back on the main track.

I played my friends when I got there, and I also got my cousin to purchase the game, but check this out:

Done and done! I'm not too good, since just began playing yesterday. I don't know any shortcuts yet and can't even get the boost at the start >.< I always got it in all the MK games before...can't get it on this one!

I should work on opening stuff too :) Even though I couldn't talk to the people I raced against I was having a blast. Wish the mic was an option for some nice smack talk.

When you guys play, do you guys get on AIM, YIM or MSN? Or voice or something. I think this would add some nice fun, at least for CAG members.

Mariokart is BS! Everytime I play I'm like 50 feet from the finish line and I either get hit with some sort of powerup or get drafted off of and they pass me while we're crossing the finish! Fuck Mariokart!!!!!!!! I'm about say fuck it and not even play anymore it pisses me off that much!

You aren't supposed to use any wireless devices, even if local. I read up and my Bluetooth headphones for my iPAQ aren't supposed to be used. I guess it didn't do any harm if they landed safely. That would definitley make for a great way to spend a LONG flight if they don't figure out it is using WiFi (and it, of course, isn't causing any issues with the plane!)

Haha, actually only two to the blue shell. Most of the first race was due to the triple mushroom right at the end ;) The third blue shell managed to hit you after you finished. Oops. Good racing!

Funniest thing happened last night!

Got a online match, one guy was "Ih8snakers." Another guy was "snaker" with an icon of a naked woman. I thought, "Oh boy..."

So, three of us just tormented this snaker dude. (I have a rule about beating the snot out anyone with an icon that would be inappropriate for kids to see)

At one point I had a star, passed him (he dodged), then I slammed on the brakes and he ran right into me. At one point I let off the accelerator pegged him with a red shell.

"ih8" was Bowser, snaker was Yoshi, there were many mushroom blasts off of DK Pass and the guy ended up losing on Figure 8, the snakers' dream.

I was just cracking up. I ended up losing, but it was hilarious. Just thought I'd share.

We were concerned, but they never made an announcement regarding that. We did hit a rough area where we encountered a lot of turbulence, but they attributed that to something else.

I'd be wary about doing it again, but it wasa lot of fun.

Now, if only I could locatemy wireless router for online play...

I already know how to do the one exploit I think is unfair but still won't do it. I think shortcuts are things to take advantage of, but skipping half the course (Wario Stadium) due to something that was not meant to happen is something I won't do. It really ruins the fun of the game even if everyone does it. If you want to use something like that, by all means do. However, I won't want to play online with you if you do that. That's my choice. Again, that only applies to Wario Stadium. Drafting on someone at the end or zipping through a shortcut is no big deal. That's part of the game. So is holding onto a star 'til the last part of the race (you could get ghosted for that!)

This cheat is the same as Wario Stadium on the N64 - there was an almost identical cheat that would get you nearly 1/2 a lap ahead. Anyone who did that would get the wrath of the other 3 playing, so we just decided that was not kosher to do. I've let that go into the online world.

Having played the game over a week, I've gotten used to the controls and am getting as good as in the N64 days. Practice! :-)

As for what class it is, I think no matter what it will be that class. There's no way to change it that I know of.

Just keep practicing! :) When I first played I was smoked terribly and I almost wanted to give up. Then, after practicing and practicing, you learn nuances, and it's those small things that make you faster.
So far the skills I place the most value on is drafting, powersliding, and course memorization.

I would guess that hopping won't break a draft, since with the way the WiFi works, you can't see your opponents hopping. Also, online is definitely NOT 150cc. If I had to guess, I'd say it's either 100cc or somewhere between 100 and 150.

My question is how often do you guys actually use that turbo. It seems like you need a really long drift to get it. Is it a big key for your play style? I ask b/c it doesn't seem worth it to me. Keep at it. It's very useful. Depending on the cart and character, in a long turn I can get 2-5 boosts. Quickly back and forth on the Dpad helps too.

I think when you disconnect you get penalized, at least I have. I've disconnected during matches because I absolutely hate racing snakers, but it looks like I get penalized with 2 losses when I do that. Screw snakers.

He probably did get handed a loss. I was racing a guy who decided to DC right at the end of the third race when it looked like he was gonna lose a close race right at the end. We we're tied on points going into the third race but I'm pretty sure he got a lose as I think I got a win over him according to my record after the race.

For everybody's info just disconnect as the 4th race finishes and is about to move on the trophy screen. A bit of exerimentaion should help you figure it out.

I also had my loss record go down by 2 about a week or two ago. I didn't disconnect at any point though. I just chalked it up as a glitch or something of the likes that my record got messed up.
