View Full Version : Stupid Ad hacks.

Happened tonight. I went to the New Yorker site to read that new article about Iraq. Anyway, tons of ads started popping up as soon as the new yorker loaded. I've used both Adaware and Spybot which has helped the problem. But I still get malicious programs trying to get out past my firewall and still have popups for weightloss pills.

Ad aware can't find them. I've resorted to tracking down processes manually and deleting them. Spybot has found around ten more. The DSO Exploit, Purity Scan, Avenue A and Hitbox. However, it can't remove them. Spybot hangs up and crashes on the attempt, which I think might be the doing of the malicious programs.

Looks like I'm going to do a complete format of my hard drive. Needs it anyway. I need to pick up a portable hard drive or something tomorrow for backup purposes before I do it.

Shit like this is a crime. It's an invasion and hijacking of my personal property. We should file class action suits against these people.

Why would they do such a thing?

Be sure to update your Ad-Aware regularly. I had like 118 found after I updated.

Be sure to update your Ad-Aware regularly. I had like 118 found after I updated.

A friend of mine, one who is particularly un-internet savvy, had a mess of spyware on his comp. I had told him to try AdAware way back when it was like version 3. He recently went insane about his pop-ups and called me asking for advice. I told him, 'run AdAware.' He said he had, but he was still getting pop-ups all over the place. I went to his house to check it out, and he hadn't updated it since I first told him about it! We updated it and found about 1500 files!

Can anyone top that? My personal best (if that word can even be used in this context) was around 200.

We ran adware at the local post office store that my buddy worked at and it found over 1200 files, it was insane.

That's exactly what I said.

He was like, 'Is that bad?'

I'm surprised his computer wasn't completely engulfed in porn ads.

Congratulations, worst I've seen was close to 500. If I found one of my users with 1500 spyware entries, I would pull out my pistol and shoot them in the head immediately.

imo, Ad-aware should have a check all button...

it makes my hand tired clicking so many if I haven't scanned my computer in a while. there was this one time though where i deleted a computer resource and had to restore.

Suggestion for Ackbar: RUN VIRUS SOFTWARE TOO!

There's a good chance that there's something else out there, especially if AdAware and Spybot didn't get rid of the problem. AVG is free and works relatively well, but there are other alternatives. Just keep playing around with it before you reformat - you might be able to fix the problem without getting to that last drastic step.

^ IMO, AVG is the best free anti-virus. It's caught things my Norton and McAfee haven't.

Guys... I do run virus and spybot software and firewalls software. I have two virus scanners, three ad spy deletion programs and I use a firewall.

That's why I'm so annoyed. I've had no problems until the other day.

Fuck!!!

I just downloaded the free McAffee Anti Spyware program. Intslled. Ran it. Found more spyware. Deleted it. It's my fourth spyware tool I've used. Then I close it. And as soon as it shuts down, I get a pop-up sayifn spyware is detected and that if I want it removed I should by their spyware program.

So, someone installs a malicious program on my computer and then shows a pop up saying I have to pay them $30 to get it removed!?! That's extortion in my book!

By the way, I'm not on my fifth spyware removal tool, and they've all come up short.

lmao! my personal best was 115 and i didn't know you could right click it. itt took forever to check off all those boxes. i'd run a virus scan if i were you. try this one:

www.pandasoftware.com
on the bottom-left corner, click on the free virus scan and follow the instructions.

it found viruses that mcafee and norton couldn't find. also, spybot and ad aware couldn't find/remove the virus on the computer, but pandasoftware found it and removed it for me. good luck :)
