Update
The guy on the boards replied to me, and he sold the GT4 copy last night.

This morning I checked my email, and my cousin had emailed me. He asked me what I wanted him to do with the game...

How do I reply? I replied back with "Don't worry about it. I'd feel guilty asking for it back." Knowing him, I'm sure he'll reply back.

Any advice as to what to do now? (He said he's coming back into town on Wednesday and can bring it back with him if I wanted.)

Should I...
a) Tell him I'll take care of it.
b) Get it back from him, give him back his money and go on as if it never happened.
c) Get it back from him, collect my eBay profits, then maybe buy him a copy for Christmas or something? (He's not somebody I buy gifts for 'round the holidays, so it's not like I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone and "cheat" him out of a gift from me.)
d) Other

Erm... thanks?

---

What would you do in my situation?

I put up Gran Turismo 4 on eBay a week ago. My cousin came into town... he lives 60 miles away. He was here for my grandfather's birthday.

He jokingly told me he had bid on my copy of Gran Turismo 4... I kinda laughed it off. I then checked the bid history, and much to my surprise, he actually did. I was expecting it to go for maybe like $12, since I had thought I had seen it new for $20 on a post on these boards.

I told him to bid like $22 and then we'd both mutually withdraw the bid.

I go on my email and I check, and someone bid $24! What the hell do I do!? He's 60 miles away and gave me $5 for the game. I had kinda jokingly told him for $5, and when he accepted, I decided not to back out, feeling guilty to change the offer...

This really sucks. I was just trying to be kinda easy-going about it since it was the holidays and since he was my cousin and I don't see him much.. but.. erm.. now what?

I realize I probably had this coming to me, so please, spare me flaming! Then again, I probably deserve it...

The only reason I'm posting is to ask for advice. Someone help! =x

If you want everyone to be happy then your cousin gets to keep that GT4 for $5, you shell out money for another GT4 and you send it to the bidder who won your eBay auction, even though you may take a $26 to $36 hit on the deal.

Problem was that you joked about selling GT4 to your cousin for $5 and he accepted. Since you let him take it and you took his money you're going to seem like quite the jerk for asking for the game back since you were joking about the price. If that's not good then you can tell the eBay buyer what happened and whatnot and probably get a neg. or something. Either way the buyer isn't going to be thrilled in the slightest if he doesn't get a GT4.

In the end you accepted a poor deal from your cousin and you had him shill bid on your auction. Personally, I think you should take the monetary hit and make both parties happy. It's well deserved.

I think I might have found one over the trading forums that I'm gonna buy, and hopefully, have him ship to the winning bidder.

It still makes me mad, 'cause I'm gonna make $5 versus like $20-some, but I guess that's my fault for being a moron, eh?

Oh well. I hope the guy over the trading forums hasn't sold it yet and agrees to ship it to her.

I think you should just buy a copy and send it out to the ebay buyer. Take the hit and do the right thing.

If you come away without losing money, then what's the problem?

Well that's pretty much what I'm going to do. The topic I guess was my just venting. Like I said, I think I found a copy on the boards that sold for nearly exactly as much as th eBay auction went for, some hopefully I can snatch that up and get it shipped to the auction winner.

It's just, if that doesn't work out and I end up paying $30+ for a copy from like GameStop... then I take a double hit: not only do I lose money on the auction itself, but then the potential money I could've gained is also lost! That's like a $50 net loss! :x

Well I posted this topic before I found that dude who's selling a copy. I guess now it's just a matter of me being dissapointed that I made $5 instead of $15 or so, you know? I really didn't expect the auction to go for more than like $10.

Then again, I don't expect sympathy on this one... 'cause like I've admitted, it was all my fault. It's just kinda unfortunate that the winner out-bid a seemingly un-out-biddable price! (at least based on how I thought the "market" for the game was)

un out biddable = 100 dollars for GT4.

Anything below 30...beatable.

Don't underestimate an unintelligent consumer.

Well, looks I got this resolved (I don't think anyone really cares, but I'm gonna post it anyway).

We basically went back and forth in emails, my cousin and I did. I initially told him not to worry about it. He responded with saying that "it sold for a lot of money," and that is wasn't a big deal. He's coming in town on Wednesday for Thanksgiving, anyway, so he told me he'd bring it with him.

I told him I'd give him his $5 back, and that I'd also give him Gran Turismo 3 (for free, obviously) for me being a prick. (Even though I didn't really do anything prick-ish, it was just prick in nature).

I explained the situation to his brother, and he told me not to sweat it. He reminded me that my cousin is not a big gamer at all, and that it really wouldn't make a difference to him. So really, the "market value" of the game isn't a big deal, 'cause he hardly plays video games anyway.

Considering he has a contract with both buyers, he is an idiot not an asshole. It was a mistake, which he admitted and is trying to correct. There is no reason to be that rude about it.

I was not rude. I was offering my advice. YOU were rude when you called him an "idiot". I never did that.

If it's true he has *two* verbal contracts, then he must honor the one he agreed to first.

Did the auction end? If not, just tell your cousin to bid $1000.

If you read the entire post, you'll realize that the idiot comment was in jest. ;)

Anyway, the first contract he entered would be the contract with ebay, therefore he is doing the right thing in sending it to the ebay buyer.

Just send the buyer and email saying the item was ruined during packaging and refund his payment.

Eh, my cousin offered to give it back. I'm going to return his $5 and give him Gran Turismo 3 for free. (I know it's not worth anything, but as I pointed out earlier, he's not a gamer... he just wants a racing game to play, so it's really no different to him.)

my cousin give him Gran Turismo 3 for free. (I know it's not worth anything) I sold GT3 for $19 last month. What do you mean it's not worth anything???

You should have asked your cousin to bid $1000, so he's guaranteed to win. Why only a measly $22? How'd you arrive at that number?

As someone else said, never underestimate the stupidity of Ebayers. I was bidding against someone who bought 1999 Proof Coins for $100. I left it go. And bought the exact same set for $50 the next day. That other overbid by $50.

Another guy paid $55 for my copy of FF10-2. Store retail at the time was $45. Again, another dummy.

I was thinking fake a break-in and claim the item was stolen, but that works too :D

(Glad you got it worked out tho'.)

How in bloody hell did you get $19 for a Greatest Hits game!?

You should have asked your cousin to bid $1000, so he's guaranteed to win. Why only a measly $22? How'd you arrive at that number?

Well, I thought that someone had advertised it for $20 at K-B or something the last couple weeks... I figured a bunch of people would've hoarded the stores and then eBay'd them.

That's kinda what happened with Ghost Recon 2. If you remember, K-Mart had an apparent error in their weekly ad, and Ghost Recon 2 was $20 the week it came out. I ended up buying one for a friend, but he didn't want it anymore. So I looked at eBay, but there were tons of buy-it-now's with slight mark-ups; basically, there were so many copies available that it had no value anymore.

I figured that a $22 bid with a day and a half left would seal the deal. I thought wrong!

As you said, though... I've now realized that you never underestimate eBay!

How in bloody hell did you get $19 for a Greatest Hits game!? You're asking the wrong question. You should be asking, "Why are ebay buyers so stupid?" I swear they have no fiscal sense. They spend like maniacs.

Lucky me. :-)
