What do you think the numbers on Lost mean?

I watched the entire first season of Lost on dvd over the course of this weekend (what a fantastic show -- I cant believe I waited until now to watch it). Needless to say the numbers are driving me crazy. I keep trying to think of what they could be. For those that dont know they're 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. So far they've appeared on the wing of the plane, on the jerseys of a soccer team, on the hatch, Hugo's winning lottery number, and part of a transmission eminating from the island. Any guesses as to what they could be about?

I think it's telling that the shelter was setup as a psyche experiment by fans of BF Skinner, and the orientation tape was hidden behind "Turn of the Screw"

It was the season finale of the first season. I thnk the episode was "Exodus part 2". If I'm not mistaken its when they show Hugo running through the airport to catch the plane before it takes off. They show him running by a group of people in slow motion and he runs behind a soccer team with their backs turned to the camera and the numbers on the jerseys are "the numbers".

Yeah, I remember that. It was one of those moments like "oh cool!" but didn't mean a whole lot really except to push the numbers on us more.

the interview with tv guide, the 2 guys in charge out in hawaii said, they will give numbers shit out the rest of the season, but they don't understand the big deal with them...they have no plan to even try to come up with an idea to explain it...check out tvguide about it
