View Full Version : Anyway to change my hatred for FPS games?
I'm not a big fan of FPS games. I played Wolfenstein 3D and Doom back in the day. While playing those games I thought they were innovative and fun. Nowadays I just don't seem to like FPS games at all.
Now granted I haven't played too many this gen for more than a few mintues but I still feel the same way. I think the thing that bothers me the most is how at times I can't see what the hell is attacking me or where the hell I'm going. I guess it doesn't help that I'm probably just not any good at these games mainly because my lack of intrest. Also the last FPS I put any actual time into was SW Dark Forces for the Playstation which we all know was crappy.
I guess basically what I'm asking is there a cheap ($20 or less) Cube or PS2 FPS that may change my perception of these games? Or am I doomed to hate them forever?

TimeSplitters 2 should only be about $10 anywhere you can find it, for any system. (TimeSplitters 3 is now $10 at Toys R Us, too, but I don't think it's as well-made as TS2.) The enemies are easy to see. There's at least some strategy -- the first level of TS2 on Normal difficulty is a bitch. No later level will take you as long to beat as that one, and beating it smartly is really satisfying. That game's two-player co-op is great and its four-player arena matches are very strong as well.
The Half-Life series will be most people's answer, but I've never played them. TS2 is the summer blockbuster of modern FPSes -- it's not great, it's not art, but it's solidly put together and should, at the very least, indicate whether it's a style of gameplay you enjoy.

I would reccomend an online fps, but your console selection scratches that choice off. Playing versus a scripted enemy AI is a different experience then blasting up some human players.

Let me give you an interesting reply because I'm kind of where you're coming from.
Hitman 2
XIII
Try Hitman 2 - you get some FPS action but there's alot of strategy and neat storytelling elements layered inside this stealth/action game. IMO Hitman 2 is everything a stealth game should be - I found MGS2 to be incredibly overrated.
XIII gets a bad rap but I think it's got a cool style as well as a neat plot that keeps you moving through the game. Try it on "easy" so that you can enjoy the story as opposed to keeping an trained eye on your ammo and precious health packs.

Nowadays I just don't seem to like FPS games at all. I don't like FPSes either. But I *do* like the first-person perspective of Metroid Prime (a hide-n-seek adventure NOT a shooter) or Star Wars Starfighter or Colony Wars.
I also enjoy a good story. Like Red Faction. That games throws you into a Mars rebellion, and makes you forget your playing a shooter. It feels more like a Star Trek/sci-fi game.

If you don't have the PS2 network adapter, you might as well just get it. $17 used at EB games (make sure you find one with the online start up disc). 2nd, go to Toys R Us and pick up call of duty. It's $10 now. Try playing that online. If you don't like it, it's only a net loss of $27, and you can play many other games online with the Network adapter (such as Burnout 3). While I've not played COD on the PS2 (only on the computer), it is quite fun and not a bad way to start getting into FPSs.
I am in the same situtation. Played Halo 2 for an hour and never play it again. played CoD for 30 min and never play again. I dont think i enjoyed any FPS since duke nukem 3D

Everyone likes GoldenEye!
I enjoyed Doom 3, but a lot of people thought it was too dark or complained about the flashlight.
Halflife 2 was awesome.
I'm playing fear right now, but its kinda hard and kinda too easy at the same time. Its cool though.
WoW has a firstperson perspective.

I like FPSes but not on consoles. It's just not as responsive as a keyboard/mouse combo.

Deus Ex.. get it for PC if you can, but the port is ok-ish for PS2. It's much more than your typical FPS (RPG elements)
Since you have a Cube, and although I don't consider them completely FPS.. try Metroid Prime 1 & 2. Both are excellent games.
I'm not a big FPS fan, either. I did enjoy Half Life, Half Life 2, and CounterStrike, though. In any case, I wouldn't even bother with an FPS on consoles--it's just much more intuitive for me to use mouselook to aim and shoot.

I couldnt agree more.
If you look at my Console collection, you would think I hated FPS games, cos I havent bought one for a console since Goldeneye with a single exception.
But then if you took a look at my PC game collection, ONLY FPS games. Im a huge FPS gamer, I just refuse to play them on the inferior controlling/looking consoles. They look, and play waay better on PC's, its a simple fact. I bought Halo 2 for my Xbox, I bought into the hype, I was fooled. Halo 2 sucks. Its a poorly controlling mediocre looking Unreal Tournament clone. I threw it in the drawer after a few hours and it will never see the light of day again. 32 Person Multiplay? Voice chat? These are features that PC gamers have been enjoying for many years already. Console FPS games are still way behind, and in some areas, namely control, they will never catch up to PC's. Some genres of games are just meant for PC's, like Real Time Strategy, and imo, First Person Shooters as well.

I think your biggest problem is the lack of an Xbox. Besides the PC, the Xbox is best for FPS's, mainly because of the controller. One of the best FPS's you'll find on the PS2 is Killzone. . .

I don't like FPS's either but their have been a few that I enjoy like Metroid Prime and Makken X which really don't play like your typical FPS. I don't shut the genre out completely but for the most part I can't stand them.

A really good yet old FPS that I still think to this day is one of the BEST FPS ever is Marathon (which was created by Bungie before the Microsoft buy-out) It's because of Marathon that I didn't care much for Halo cause it just didn't live up to the greatness of Marathon, It has a great story and is a lot of fun to play. Its for the Mac & PC and its free. http://source.bungie.org/

I thought the controls in halo 2 were okay I just think it's a very unbalanced game. I dont own very many FPS for console since I prefer Socom 3 as my online console game. The ones I do own are mostly budget games that I play with friends. I still play Red Faction for PS2 with buddies when they come over and you can find it really cheap. Try that out it's the first console FPS I truly enjoyed (Didn't have a 64 so i never played Goldeneye)

I've tried, but I just can't get the sensitivity playing an FPS with a joystick than I can with a mouse.

I don't know how the PS2 version of Quake III is but give it a try. The DC version is what got me into FPS in the first place (which in turn made me want the PC version) and I think it is one of the easier FPS to get into.

Good call on Maken X. That game gets zero respect, but it was one of my favorite DC games. :)
Also, I've enjoyed what I played of Killzone so far on the PS2. I'd say it's one of the better console FPS's, even tho I normally like to only play them on the PC.

i can tell you youre problem quick, its because you want them on the cube or ps2 (xbox falls in here too)... you need to play them on a PC. keyboard+mouse are above and beyond the best control scheme for an FPS, so get a FPS for you PC

Agreed. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it you'll enjoy it. I can get used to controllers (especially for the Halo series because the controls are superb), but mouse and KB is where it is at.

The first answer to your questions was best, TimeSplitters 2.
TS2 has the largest variety of gameplay available in an FPS. The story modes, while not to everyone's taste (each story arc "seems" independant of the others, and some folks did not like that) are actually some of the best FPS gameplay around. Each level plays like a unique game in and of itself, with a custom set of weapons matched to specific environments.
Combine the story mode with the Arcade and Challenge modes in TS2, and strong multilplayer even with bots alone, and there is a little something for everyone.
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is everything TS2 is, along with online play, and a story mode that is more mainstream, and it add online.
Going online with an FPS means u also must deal with cheaters, kickers, and profanity (if u have a headset). By and large the TS:FP community is a good one, except for the player Snabo, but there are just not the same numbers of folks online now as there were at launch. Still, TS3 matches TS2 in its variety, it is not as hard as TS2 can be, and the fact that it is online is cool beyond words if u are a TS fan. I just don't think TSFP has the "magic" that TS2 has.
XIII, while a good (and good looking) game has a terrible control scheme -- don't get me wrong, I liked the game, but its PC Unreal engine roots show painfully in its transition from keyboard to gamepad.
Half-Life (1) is a sure bet, but it does not offer the grab-bag variety found in the TS series -- in fact no FPS game affers as much variety as TS2 and TSFP.
Others of note: Killzone, Call of Duty, any Medal of Honor (esp the PS1 versions are fun) though some have said the series is not aging well on the PS2, Geist for the GC.

The team who made Timesplitters are the same guys who made Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, right?
I might check out Future Perfect today. I'm actually getting on a bit of an FPS kick  never thought that'd happen. maybe it's all the school stress....

Try The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I love those damn games.

I agree with Brak on Riddick. It's probably my favorite Single Player FPS experience.
And Halo 2 is the definitive answer for Online Multiplayer. That'll change your hatred for FPSs. It will however make you hate a majority of the people you play against online.

The man speaks truth. In general I don't wear my headset unless I play against people I know. Sometimes I'll just mute fools in the players list but it takes a little bit of time to do so.

I feel the same way about FPS on consoles. I didn't even like Halo 2 on the Xbox and people love that game. On the PC it has changed my view on FPS but only on the PC not console. Consoles for me are only for fighting and adventure games.

Learning curve? Playing FPS with a mouse and keyboard is about the easiest thing since learning how to walk. The only slightly hard part is learning the hotkeys (if that's what they still call them) for a couple controls and that takes all of 5 minutes.
I'd say playing on a console with controllers has a much higher learning curve, especially for those that have been spoiled by the ease of playing FPS games on a PC.

I like FPSes that have auto-aim. That way it doesn't matter if you're using a joystick or mouse.
Also I enjoy games that are NOT FPSes. Like Metroid Prime (first-person hide-n-seek). Or Star Wars/Colony Wars (first-person space simulator). Or Pac-Man Vs. (first-person maze game).
