View Full Version : Convince Me to Buy a DS

After seeing a potential opportunity for me to snag a DS for $99 due to the Target ads, I've been having my eye on purchasing one, the thing is, I don't know shit about the thing.

I've always been turned off from Nintendo from their targeting of a younger demographic.

I was wondering what games would be worth purchasing if I got a DS? I'm open to nearly anything, I love shooters and racing games but I also enjoy RPG's if there are any for the DS. I also like games that revolve around creative mini-games and such, as long as it is fun.

What features does the DS have in general? Battery life, screen quality/brightness/etc? I'm assuming you save your games directly onto the cart? Also, how well does the system transport when in size comparison to the PSP? Is a protective case suggested for transport (I can live w/o a case since the screens are already protected) and are there any Internet capabilities with the DS?

Thanks and hopefully I can get some of my questions cleared up.

You should definately look into an Lynx. Led recommends it. It goes great with this 2600.

What it comes down to more than anything is if you like video games the DS is worth every cent. The games are great with no signs of slowdown.

The NDS can't play game boy or game boy color games. Also, it's hard to look at the screen when sunlight hits it.

Nintendo DS

pros:

+Durable.
The ds system is build like a rock. Drop, smash it it doesnt matter it will still work.

+Innovate.
Majority of the game uses the stylus which create addition fun factor with the game such as drawing a line to save kirby or scribling left to right for wario twisted.

+cheap
Compared to psp games the average price of ds games are $10 cheaper.

+good video game line up
Castlevania,mario kart,wario twisted,kirby,advance wars,phonix wright and much more

+good return policy
Nintendo have a no dead or stuck pixelstategy,if you have a dead or stuck pixel return to nintendo with no question ask.

+free stuff
First party nintedo games come with nintendo code.Use the code in the nintendo website and recive some free stuff such as pink stylus or zelda collector edition

+can play gba games

Con:

-horrible design
Try puting the system in your pocket. It really feels unconfortable because of its large size

-few games have little or no online play

-might be obosolete
Juding by nintendo history, nintendo will probably improve the ds model in the near future.

gb>>gb pocket>>gb color>>gba>>gba sp>>gba brighter screen>>micro

-too depend on nintendo line up
Core startegy for nintendo realies to much on its first party games like previous nintendo console such as nintendo 64 and Gamecube.Making the 3rd party games less attractive.

bottomline:
If you like fresh, fun, inovative and love nintendo first party games.I would recommend you to purchase ds system.

Since you like shooters, racing games and RPGs I'd pass on the DS at the moment. Unless of course by racing games you mean mario kart, advance wars and the mediocre Lunar Dragon Song are the only RPG/strategy games out and Metriod hunter (1st person shooter) got delayed.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is coming out this week.

I bit on Lunar with the B2G1F at GS with Kirby and Advance Wars, basically just because it was an RPG. Even if its just a mediocre RPG, I think I'll be satisfied. So far my only problem is that you can't skip a lot of the text, but I haven't played much of it yet.

And I just realized how nice it is to have a salary (and CAG of course). Last year it took me about 6 months to own 6 games for my GC, but I have 6 games for my DS a day after owning it (hell, I bought them all before I got the system :P)

If I remember right most of the CAG's are around lets say mid 20's so most of Nintendo's 1st party stuff is what we grew up with and you call it for young kids. However it's not they have made what we grow up with more mature. Stuff like the Mario sports games and Have you tried to beat Super Mario Sunshine that game has some spots harder the Ninja Gaiden for xbox.

I am in the same boat. I feel like I am too old to get this thing even though the games look very good. If the target near me has them I prolly will get one, for myself or give it for xmass.

I went over to my wife's cousin home...only to see a DS on their child's desk. I exclaimed with glee that we could exchange Friends' codes for Mario Kart DS. All of the adults looked at me, but you know what....I just don't care. I love gaming, and I prob. always will. As long as the games are still fun and of great quality, I'll continue portable gaming. Considering how generic console gaming has become, and the fact that I do have a computer with a mouse and keyboard, the PC and DS are my primary means of gaming. So get over this "I'm an adult crap" and buy yourself the current system with the best games out there, 360 included.

I'm getting a DS but I do wish they'd make more adult looking games. There are way too many anime looking titles. Why do so many games have to have Yu-Gi-Oh type characters? Why can't we get a normal looking RPG game (besides Mario and Luigi which looks fun)?

Many of the ones that are normal looking are apparently horrible games (NFS: Most Wanted, Madden 06, Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, etc).

There's just so many DS titles I won't get even if it's a solid game because the game is so focused on the Yu-Gi-Oh fans or the 2-5 yr old kid segment.

Give me a normal RPG or shooter any day and I'm a happy camper.

I can safely say Phoenix Wright is reason enough to own a DS.

That doesn't include the 20+ titles out right now that are worth owning, nor the dozens coming out that will be must owns (new 2D Mario makes my pants tight).

Yea the 2d mario looks good. I'm probably going to pick up the original zelda and Mario Golf that are for GBA (but can be played on DS obviously).

Here's the games I'm probably going to get soon after santa brings me my DS

Mario Kart DS
Nintendogs
Meteos
Advance War: Dual Strike (graphic style doesn't look so good but looks like a fun game)
Burnout Legends
Mario Golf (GBA) - or True Swing Golf if it's a better game
Original Zelda (GBA)
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time

Future Games that look good
New Super Mario Bros
Moonlight Fables (have to see what reviews say, looks interesting)
Top Spin 2
Age of Empires: The Age of Kings
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Legend of Zelda DS
Winning Eleven (soccer)

I just bought that last night. Can't wait to start. Mario Kart DS is reason enough, especially if you have a wireless router. I can't wait for Children of Mana.

There's always Trauma Center.
And, IMO, Meteos is the best puzzle game I have ever played. No contest there.
If you love PC FPS then you'll want to be here when Metroid: Hunters drops.

Doesn't the best friends version of nintendogs only come in a DS bundle? From the thing on IGN, it looks like it's only a bundle deal and can't be bought separately from an ugly colored DS.

Plus I heard all the other dogs are unlockable so they're practically the same game except a different set of dogs are playable from the beginning.

I managed to pick up Meteos yesterday and it's the only game I currently have, but it's as addicting as Lumines but a hell of a lot more hectic.

In defense of the design, it feels like a brick on the display devices, but it's quite comfortable. There are at least 20 games worth playing, probably owning, all exclusives.

In addition to the other reccomendations. Polarium is a pretty solid title. Same with Feel the Magic. If you feel like importing, Jump Superstars is a great game. Plus it has a fucking sequel to CARD FIGHTERS CLASH. That is reason enough alone.

I think I'm the only one here that thinks Meteos is meh. For some reason I just can't get into it. Having each level turn into a complete clusterfuck in 5 minutes is just not my cup of tea I guess. I need to trade that in for Advance Wars or Mario and Luigi I guess.
