Hey guys, I just bought a DS for my g/f for an early xmas gift and it turns out it's got 1 dead pixel in the touch screen. I got it from Toys r' us. Do you think there would be any problems with me returning it? I got it less than a week ago.

Maybe, maybe not. But Nintendo will fix it/replace it no problem if TRU won't.

All LCD will have dead pixel problems. It is up to the manufacturer to catch them, if they feel like it.
Nintendo has a 0 dead pixel policy. If you have a dead pixel, call them, let them know, and you get a new DS.

No, not fixing them is a Sony problem.

Just say its DEFECTIVE and exchange it. Lie about the touch screen not working, OR SOMETHING. But TRU might not be as nice as eb or gamestop when it comes to exchanging for 1 dead pixel. Might want to consider sending in to Nintendo if all else fails.

Does the policy apply to the SP? I have 2 or 3 dead pixels on mine and I would sure love a new backlit SP :)

2 or 3?? that would get annoying to me. Definitely give Nintendo a call to get a replacement, if it's still under the warranty period that is.

I just got a pink nintendo ds with one dead pixel. I've heard that if you call nintendo, they won't replace it with the same pink one b/c they don't stock specialty ones. Think target will take it back, I mean, they are pretty good with returns. I guess if all else fails I can call my AMEX card.

I've only got one stuck green pixel on mine, it is annoying sometimes but I am learning to live with it.

Mines also has 1 dead pixel at the edge of the touch screen. Was thinking of sending to Nintendo but it really doesn't bother me at all.

My friend was having a charger problem. He use dhis SP and DS charger and in two different outlets. It wouldn't charge, so he called up Nintendo to ask how to fux the problem. they told him they hadn't heard of the problem and sent him a brand new platinum DS in two days.
Great customer satisfaction, I tell you. Luckily I still have about 5 months warranty left for something to go wrong (knock on wood, it doesn't).

I finally was able to find a DS at target and it has one dead pixel in the top screen, I am pondering if it bothers me that much.

I don't know about Toys R Us, but Walmart definitely does, so its worth a shot. When I first got my GBA SP, I went through 3 till I had one with no dust or dead pixels (but a couple years later dust appeared anyways :( ). Just returned em to Walmart, they saw my receipt, and gave me a new one.

No, I'm planning on getting my bf a Mario Kart DS for Christmas and I'm also planning on opening it before then to make sure it's alright (no dead or stuck pixels). I mean, what's worse then opening a gift on Christmas and then realizing that it's defective and you have to return it anyway (and go to the store and deal with all the crazy people and employees)? It's a lot of hassel, but I'd rather get an opened, new DS without a problem then one unopened with a dead pixel.
Plus, I also want to try out the online multiplayer ;-) ...

Sadie Dee, be sure you try it one day after the first boot up...sometimes dead pixels are hard to spot on the first boot up, or dont freeze until a certain color screws them up. Also, if you're going to open it, might want to put screen protectors on to? It will show him you care, that you checked for dead pixels and protected his screen.

Thanks Arkay! The screen protectors are a good idea!

Elaborating more on that, I strongly recommend the Hori brand ones from EB. Now, here are some tips.
1) When you first remove the covers from the small packaging, dont worry about getting finger prints on them...there are both top and bottom plastic covers for the protectors, so you're not holding the actual protector.
2) Have a can of compressed air and a little bit of scotch tape at the ready. When you first open the system, you'll want to appraise it very quickly to see if there are any smudges or fingerprints from Nintendo testers you want to wipe off with the provided screen wipe. If not, give the screen a little blast of compressed air to get dust that may have landed on the screen, and then peel back a bit of the bottom of one of the protectors (making sure you are applying the TOUCH screen protector to the TOUCH screen since it is a different thickness, material, and texture)
3) When you have gotten a corner of the protector down, peel back the rest of the bottom and assess how much dust got trapped underneath. The dust will likely cause bubbles, so they'll be hard to miss. The tricky part follows.
4) Remove the top plastic cover of the protector and in order to remove trapped dust, take the scotch tape you had ready and gently press down onto the protector with it and then lift. The tape gets a good grip on the the protector, allowing you to get it up. You can then use the compressed air or another piece of tape, to which dust usually is attracted.
5) Other air bubbles you can simply work towards the edges of the protector if no dust is the culprit. I recommend using one of the plasic covers for either of the protectors to make your finger tip or credit card or whatever you use to work out the bubbles more blunt and less damaging to the protector/screen.
6) Assuming you followed the protectors instructions and applied the protectors correctly and to the right screen, all you need to do is wipe them clean and if absolutely necessary, adjust them a bit using tape if they are blatantly off-center.
Just a note, Hori protectors are pretty much designed to last as long as your system if they are not heavily abused, so they're really a sound investment and very cheap considering the service they provide. Have fun!

I bought a pink DS for my wife last month at TRU. She turned it on and it had two dead pixels. Went to TRU and told them it had a dead pixel, they replaced it with a new one no questions asked. Its a good thing I gave her her birthday present a month early.

I've got a stuck red pixel near the top of my touch screen but I can't ever see it unless the background is black so I just ignore it.
Nice sig, BTW.

Could someone please find for me the number I would call to talk to them about replacing my DS?
Also, I don't really have a proof of purchase, and my DS IS thoroughly worn. Though the dead pixels were present from the first boot up. I have a freakin' green one on the top screen and an orange one on the bottom screen, which have been an eyesore and present since purchase.
A number would be much appreciated.

Technically, just about any DS would still be under warranty because of its age, and proof of purchase wouldn't be required. But that's just if you ask me.

I thought that was weird too at first... but when it comes to a product with LCD screens... it's good to always be damn sure you don't have any dead pixels. That's how I'd rationalize it any way.

Our local gamestop had 6 Mario Kart bundles, 3 had dead pixels, unfortunately we bought 2 of them.

I have a question. My friend sold me his DS for $63 but he didn't have a receipt or anything and it has a dead pixel. It only really bothers me sometimes, but nevertheless it would be nice if it wasn't there at all. If I don't have a proof of purchase, will Nintendo still replace mine?

It's worth a shot. I just wouldn't mention that you bought it second-hand.
My DS has 1 dead pixel in the touch screen but I bought the EB Games 1 year replacement plan so I decided to just keep it and not worry about it and will exchange it in a year for a brand new one.

I tried the Hori ones. They are the best of what's available by far. They're mostly clear, and thanks to the silicone-based adhesive, they don't leave a residue behind when you remove them.
Unfortunately, they are hard to put on and even harder to remove.
Nintendo also advises that you avoid screen covers/protectors as they can reduce the touch screen sensitivity. They don't say not to use them outright, but it's interesting they would take that stance considering the Hori's at least are licensed products (by NOJ).
In the end, I took mine off and leave 'em off--seems to be working out fine so far.
