Xbox 360 launch contributed heavily to sales spike

Following a slow month for retail sales in November, Electronic Arts CFO Warren Jensen has reported a positive Thanksgiving weekend - but warned of further software price cuts before the end of the year.

Speaking at a technology conference webcast, Jensen claimed that the US launch of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console has helped to boost software sales, and that EA will hold a 30 per cent market share of Xbox 360 games by the end of the year.

The company shipped five sports titles for the launch of the new console, with a further three games scheduled for release in the coming weeks. EA also has more than 35 next-generation games in development for both Xbox 360 and Sony's forthcoming PS3.

The publishing giant recently announced a series of cuts in the suggested retail price of a selection of software titles, including NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, SSX on Tour and Madden 06.

Analysts at Banc of America Securities attributed the cuts to a combination of poor market conditions, increased competition in the sports genre and generally poor sales for selected titles. Whilst no specific titles were mentioned, Jensen suggested that further cuts on selected titles may follow in the coming weeks, though new releases -pecifically on the next-generation machines - could still carry a USD 50 price tag.

I don't get this. I really don't.

EA's games for the 360 have been shit. As much as I hate not getting a game for a new console for a month or two there is no way in hell I'm going to pick up a $60 port or half assed first generation sports game.

No one on my friends list has an EA game looking at their games list. On launch day EA games were sitting in piles while PGR 3, PDZ, Kameo, Condemned etc. were flying off the shelves or sold out. Early adopters are the most hardcore of the hardcore. Internet gaming geeks who know every review for every game and EA has sucked donkey balls by that gague.

How on Earth without the Madden lemmings can they think they're going to achieve this kind of market share with the crap and shovelware they put out?

Maybe 'hardcore' gamers don't buy madden year after year, but everyone else who owns a fucking video game system does.

Well, with them having 5 out of the 18 released games for the system, I'd say a 30% share is pretty likely. They account for 33% of the games I own (2 out of 6).

No clue. I think the only EA game i've seen someone play is Live.. and the only EA 360 game I own is NFS: Most Wanted, and it's good.

I'm more interested in the "further software cuts". If they want 30% of the market, they'll cut the price of the 360 games.. even a drop to $40 would help, a drop to $30 would be great. That's the only way I see anything good happening for them.

They release half done games. Half the time to do it, double the amount of games coming out. I think it took them like 20 minutes to develop Tiger Woods. I heard they're putting out Tiger Woods 2006 1/2 next week.

Because it's EA. and EA does what EA can!

They probably figure 30% markey share cos they will publish 30% or more of the available 360 games. Its not that hard to imagine.

I'm pretty sure that's how EA looks at it too. I think they want to maintain that ratio of every third game available for the 360 having an EA logo on the box.
