Probably a stupid topic but it kills me every year. Without a cop-out gift (tie, golf balls, wallet, belt, other articles of clothing, or any of the other repetitive father gifts), what else is there?

What do dads like these days. I throw out DVDs as a suggestion. Music is a possibility but my parents tend to have both the vinyl and CD of whatever bands they like (and thank god they have good taste in music with Queen jamming in the living room). Doesn't play video games of any kind. Doesn't really have hobbies like model airplanes. Doesn't collect anything.

I mean, he grills, but doesn't use any acessories like a grill brush or anything. He golfs but I wouldn't know what to get. I was thinking a nice universal remote but he might get a new TV in a few months.... Has to commute a lot to work (2 hours a day generally) but I wouldn't know what to get for a car. He could use a new computer (for work purposes) but I can't afford that. I thought about wireless keyboard and mouse but his generation is usually scared by things lacking wires (quoted from my mom).

Wtf. I need suggestions if anyone else has any. Also I'm banking on the idea that other people are in the same situation. :/

If they like Queen, why don't you get them a Queen concert on DVD? There are a lot of great Queen DVDs to choose from. In fact, I need to buy one when I figure out which one to buy...

My father is into Corvettes and I just get him one of those 1:32 scale cars every year. You might try that. They run anywhere from $10 to $40 depending on the type.

I usually get my dad a movie or CD, and tell my mom what it is so she can make sure he doesn't buy it first.

Absolutely get a Sirius satellite radio. Its the best thing ever to happen to cars. I dont listen to my cd player in the car anymore. It has crystal clear sound and great features (auto notify when a pre programmed favorite artist or song comes on). Crutchfield has some great deals right now too ($29.99 after rebates for some!!)

Take a look ..

Unfortunately, I'm probably closer to your dad's age than I am to yours. I would KILL for a sirius radio. Just not in the budget with daycare costs that almost equal my mortgage. If he's got a long commute, how about audio books? I gift I love that my hubby gets 'from the kids' are paid coupons for the local detail car wash. Magazine subscriptions?

Check out and see if anywhere around you has a wine tasting kind of thing. Even in IL there are some nice area wineries. Get a gift certificate. At least for that kind of gift cert, it looks like you put some time/thought into it.

Basically, your dad wants to know you actually have some vague idea of who he is as a person, not just your dad. Cuz once upon a time, before you came along, he rocked.

I always choose one of the following alternating each year:
A.) Tools
B.) Books

A.- A man can NEVER have enough tools.
B.-If you know what your dad likes to read, or something you think he should read, its amazing how well it works.

Also, I never do this because I'm too cheap, but if you can afford it, get him a card for a massage apointment at a spa or gym or something. Everybody likes a massage, especially a professional one :)

The Satellite radio is a great suggestion, anyone who has taken a long commute on a regular basis would probably love a satalite radio.

You also said he was into golf, if he doesn't have a good quality putter that's a def. possibility as well. A real good putter isn't cheap (usually at least $90 or so for a decent quality one) but won't break you like a new TV or computer might.

I take it Sirius is a brand name of satellie radio (or perhaps reflects some particular set of radio stations?) Amazon has the Delphi SA10101 SKYFi2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver and Remote Control (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006GX0IC/ref=nosim/104-6467925-2826356?n=172282) for $57....but there's a $50 mail in rebate (http://www.gotapex.com/l/?FCR2I4I7). That deal was posted on gotapex.com today.

I was curious enough to take a look at it, but $13/mo (no contract needed) makes it fairly unattractive to me, without knowing exactly what stations (or station types) would be available.

I bought my dad the Die Hard trilogy last Christmas... because he thinks the series is about him. The Christmas before that, Raging Bull... because he thinks the film is about him.

I might buy him the Rocky collection this Christmas... again, 'cause he thinks the series is about him.

In other words, DVD sets (whether they be films or television series) are always a good way to go.

Steaks $$$$er, steaks. And not that shit in your grocery store. Omaha Steaks have to be eaten to be belived. Dry aged. Dry. Aged. Less water, more blood. More blood means more meat flavored goodness.

Even the hotdogs, which are traditionally lips and assholes of homeless people (save Nathan's (http://www.nathansfamous.com/nathans/)) are money. And not just any ole money, money you won off a hot stripper in a card game and then had her slobber on your knob.

That kinda money.

But in hot dog form.

The joke was meant to be like "I wish I just gave women food and they cooked it without questions."

If I have to explain it, it's not funny. :P

I'm joking, of course.

I personally used to get dvd's for my father for holidays. He liked the mash boxed sets, and would have been up to 9 this Christmas. (He passed away in July.)

Tools are kind of risky. My mom had tried to buy them on several occasions, but it only worked out when he gave her an ad with the item circled. Not much of a suprise, but he got what he wanted and didn't have to deal with returns.
