This game is so hard!!! I thought looping rope around the Walkers was tough. But I did it.
Then I went against some shield & planet base. 10 minutes of boredom in asteroids followed by 1 minute of insane punishment by killer guns. Then 10 more minutes of asteroid boredom. Argh. But eventually I got it.
Then I had to kill a Star Destroyer! One tiny fighter against a Destroyer?!?!? Nuts. 6 hours later & about 100 attempts, I just barely beat it with about 1% life left. WHEW.
Now I'm on some planet. I get killed off in about 3 minutes.
ARGH! This is too hard! (punches the wall) It's supposed to be the best game out there, but I'm not enjoying this game at all. Where's the fun in replaying the same 3 minutes of space battle 100 times???
Frankly, I'd rather go replay Colony Wars or Starfox or Elite. All were challenging w/o making you feel like a man stuck in an infinite loop.

Wow. I didn't have that much trouble. Try like the easy mode or something. The only really hard challenge I had was the Death Star 2.

I am so glad you exist. Now I don't feel alone in the galaxy anymore.

Easy mode? I didn't see an easy mode?

That one mission where you infiltrate an Imperial base in a Walker was pretty damn insane. I never even got close to getting all Golds in the missions.

Oh man, I remember getting all Golds in the original Rouge Squadron for the N64. For days I tried to get the last gold medal and, as luck would have it that the day I do get it is the day the game decides to crash on me. Thus, losing the medal.
Never tried again since.
But I hear you, Rouge Squadron for the Cube was pretty hard, even for a Vet like me. :)

I'm referring to the original on the N64 - released during the same time as Zelda: OoT.
I definitely think it's worth it, but that was the first Rouge Squadron I was introduced to so I have a lot of fond memories. If you played the 2nd and/or 3rd one first, it may not be as much fun but I think it's still worth a shot.

The "first one in the series" is not a Gamecube game. It's a N64 game. You probably have Rogue Squadron *2* which is printed right on the label of the disc. Don't you read your labels?
No?
Me neither. ;-) Reminds me of one of my Ebay Bidders: "Your description say Paper Mario 2 but your picture shows Paper Mario - Thousand Year Door." (rolls eyes) I even said in my description that it's Paper Mario 2 - The Thousand Year Door. Clueless newbies. Or illiterate. Or lazy. Can't even read.
I just bought the original Rogue Squadron 1 for N64. I hope it's easier than the Cube's RS2 version (now on ebay - enough torture - not a masochist).
Is N64's version easier? (crosses fingers)

On the whole I thought it was easier, but getting all the golds will still present a serious challenge if you're up for it. :)

Haha, RS games have always been challenging, that's part of the allure. Most gamers nowadays just don't have the patience to refine their skills enough to get all the golds. Not saying that's necessarily bad if that's not your cup of tea, but I really enjoyed all of them and getting all the golds in RSII was a blast.

Well, I'm an old-school gamer, back to the days when "3D" meant lines splashed across the screen (vector graphics)...
...but I have *never* seen a flight/combat simulator as difficult as Rogue Squadron 2. As example, that Star Destroyer. It's firing ~50 different guns at you, and you're supposed to survive that assault???? Ha! A World War 1 soldier would have more luck running across "dead man's zone" on the western front.

 That mission is intense. There are few times when I scream at the TV more as when I played this game.

If it's too hard try the third one Rebel Strike. I just beat it the other day and while the on foot missions are lacking there are not many of them and the vehiclular (spelling) missions are better than 2 imo. Also it is much easier. I had more fun with it than 2.

I remember this was the game I really wanted when I bought my cube at launch. And I remember finding it incredibly hard when I first fired it up, but getting a lot better after some time. Then I hit one mission I couldn't beat, don't remember which one and bought the strategy guide. Low and behold there are power ups you can collect that make it a whole lot easier to survice. In fact I would say this game is close to unbeatable w/o the power ups. I know the laser or the shield one is in the wreckage of the shield generator in the hoth mission off hand. How I remember that after 4 years I will never know, but the game goes from insane to hard, but fun w/ the powerups collected. Actually, I've still got the player's guide if you would be interested in it.

Funny I had no problems with any of the RS games, but to each his own. I'm curious were you trying for medals on that Star Destroyer Stage? Because that is really the only reason to attack the StarDestroyers head on, otherwise just start from farther away and just unload on them until you're almost touching then boost the hell out of there. Rinse and repeat. I also agree, if Rs2 was too much try the third, you should be able to breeze through that one.

Figures.
If the programmers are going to make the game impossible to beat w/o powerups, then they ought to include hints like, "You just died 10 times in a row. Need help? Look around for hidden powerups!"

I dunno, RS might just be one of those games that really, really hard until one day it just clicks. Kinda like DDR or Ninja Gaiden. At some point you just get it and can go into a zen like mode and do great at em.

I love it... I played the hell out of the damned thing. Roll around a bit, do some evasive maneuvers. I never understood why people always fly straight in console flight sims.. I can't stand it. Yeah, I grew up on flight sims for PC (and put alot of time in Wing Commander and Janes/EA sims), but the reason I smoked anybody and everybody on Crimson Skies is because people never understand the concept of three axis movement.
Strafe, break off at high speed, and come back in at a good angle of attack. Don't push it all at once. I've gotten gold medals on every level.. the extra missions are worth it :)

Well, I didn't do any wild maneuvers, but when fighting the Star Destroyer I learned to fly straight towards -or- straight away from the guns. My narrow profile was harder to hit & that allowed me to survive longer.
That Walker Rope trick is annoying though. I'm on a planet with the downed Destroyer, trying to loop my rope around the Walker, and the rope keeps breaking and/or I keep hitting one of the legs. GRRRR.

I went back to this after I finished Rebel Strike so easily. Unfortunately, it didn't get any easier.

I agree about needing the powerups to survive later missions. Theres that one on Hoth someone mentioned. Another is in that level that is an asteriod field followed by an assualt on a big energy shield in space... in that asteroid field is a huge asteroid that has a cave/tunnel you can flt thru, theres a powerup in there.
Also, if you get RS3, RS2 coop is included. So you can tackle that Star Destroyer in split screen with a friend.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty hard. I could never beat the mission where you have to protect some people gathering data from the fallen ship...or whatever. It's like the 4th or 5th one lol.

I'm stuck on the same one. I went back to this game, thought about restarting so I could find the powerups, and then decided "screw it - there are other games I can play & have FUN - not this torture". So I sold Star Wars & bought Colony Wars instead.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 makes Fzero look easy. But at least Fzero GC is fun.
