I just got my first free issue of XBN, which had an article about the Dead or Alive 3 tournament in Japan. Here's the article:
In early March, Microsoft hosted the final (and most bizarre) round of the Xbox Championship Vol. 4: Dead or Alive 3 in Japan. Thirty-two qualifying participants and a handful of onlookers gathered for the event at Shinjuku's famous Studio Alta, a hotspot for TV actors and loitering teenagers.
With Dead or Alive 3 as the most popular and best-selling Xbox title, Microsoft obviously had high hopes for the event. Unfortunately for its already troubled Xbox division, the event was all but hijacked by oddball Osaka resident Kazuya Okubo.
Using DOA3 combatant Hayate, Okubo rolled his way to first place, 650,000 yen ($6,000), and a Hawaiian vacation. Althoughg it's technically legal in terms of tournament rules, Okubu employed Hayate's snipping dodge move, shippu-ten, to spin around his opponents repeatedly until they attacked, subsequently missing in frustration.
Other participants, play-by-play announcers and audience members all demonstrated their disgust as Okubu defeated some of Japan's top Dead or Alive players. Adding insult to injury, Okubu admitted at a preliminary round in Osaka two weeks earlier that he had just started playing the game.
Among the people angered by Okubu's fighting-style was Chihaya Hamada from Chiba prefecture -- the tournament's only female constestant -- who lost to Okubu in the first round. "It was embarassing to lose to him," she says. "I'm waiting for revenge."
Any resentment for Okubu was only compounded as he broke away between matches to weep in nearby bathroom stalls. (Whether he was crying out of nervousness or stress is unclear.) With red eyes and a flushed face, Okubu was handed his winnings by model Mari Shimomura, who wore a pink Dead or Alive bikini. Okubu -- presumably dry-eyed -- traveled with Shimomura to Hawaii on March 25.
 Not only did he beat the top Japanese players and win $6000 with his "cheap tactic," but he got to spend a vacation with a Japanese model......in Hawaii. :D
(pics of the model: xbox.com/ja-JP/news/news/20040309.htm).
What do people think about his strategy. Would you ever do something like that in a tournament?

decent... the strategy, and the model. lol

This is great, I would do it in a second. What better way to humilate gamers than to completely destroy a year or two of practice with one crappy move. It's not 'cheap' if the programmers put it in the game. Only an idiot would not use a strategy that is guranteed to win, especially for $6000.

I disagree with that. While developers try their best to balance out all of the characters, sometimes there are features in the game (a move, an item, a stage, etc.) that is broken. Shouldn't these things be accounted for in tournaments? I know in SSBM tournaments that certain stages are turned off because certain characters clearly have an advantage over others (e.g. Fox/Falco on Hyrule Temple ).

But what fun is the game if you cannot win? It defeats the purpose of the game if you're forced to pick the same character and apply the same strategies.

I think fun ceases to be an issue when 6k is up for grabs.

I saw this and had actually meant to post it a while back (been getting free XBN for a while now). I thought it was great, especially since the guy who won seems like a total wuss. $10 says he never made eye contact with the model he got to go on vacation with.
Then again, I might not make eye contact either. But that would be for a different reason.

That was pretty cheapass - in a bad way. I'd kick the dude's ass in real life if they tried that on me and that much was at stake. But if it were me I'd probably do the same thing. :)

Generally, in real competitive play you do your best to fix what the developers erred on. EX: Levels like Flatzone, Fourside, Hyrule Temple and Big Blue are generally removed from Smash Bros. Melee tournaments because they either offer broken mechanics or entice players to use such mechanics.
Basically what I'm saying is this: "If it's in the game it's fair game" (or anything similar) is a stupid statement if you want to talk about competitive play on a serious level. Cheap your friends to death all you want.

If this is such a cheapass tactic, it should have been forbidden in the rules of the tournament. I find it hard to believe that a person who has only been playing the game for a week is the only one to figure it out.

I don't think you understand the nature of a tactic like that. It's difficult to "ban" something like that (Wallbombing in Melee is a perfect example) because at what point is it being abused and at which point is it merely being used?

I think the other competiters were just pissed because they did'nt play as Hayate and perfected shippu-ten. Alls fair in love and war, and basically a tourney is a war

Solinari, is it frowned upon in SSBM world to be JigglyPuff and use the sleep move constantly? Without that, the game just isnt worth playing.

Yeah, I'm a lurker over there for the same reasons. I need to keep up with the latest strategies. Are you planning on going to TG6?
MrUnoriginal, Jigglypuff is pretty good, but not because of her sleep. Most people employ the "Wall of pain" tactic, which basically utilizes her floatyness and maneuverability to get players into attacking first (sorta similar to Okubu's tactic, but not as cheap).
The sleep is very effective against fast-falling characters, though, like Fox and Falco. Unless you can DI (Directional Influence) really well, a simple grab and upthrow = KO.
SolinariDotCom

No, I don't plan to go to TG6. It's way out of the way ;-). E3 costed enough, much less another flight out.
Right now on my list of "to do" is Smash Aid III and Era of Legends.

It's not so easy to do against the very experienced players unless you're very experienced and well timed yourself.
I doubt im tournament good, but shes all i use just becuase it is the most fun to bitch someone wiht that move, so ive gotten pretty good with timing.

Stupid strategies like that can be defeated with just patience. The article said that he won by dodging untill his aponent attacked in frustration, but if they had just waited patiently, he would eventually become tired of mashing the button to dodge and the one who hadn't been frantically mashing buttons would have a chance to attack. It is extremely annoying, but it can be gotten around. The only way the technique couldn't be overcome with patience is if dodging could be done just by constantly holding a button, which would prevent getting tired and would be a sign that the game had a terrible flaw.

I'm assuming there was more than was reported, or it was reported in a lackadaisical fashion.

Whom do you use in SSBM, Solinari?
I play multiple characters, but I guess I have a comparable Falco to the top US players. :D I play a mean Ness and Luigi, though. Non-top-tier characters are fun...

I've used Sheik for a very long time, but I've recently picked up a nice Fox (for not having actually used him before, he's coming along very well). I pretty much decided I'm going to transfer over main characters, though staying fluent in Sheik.

Any top players use Gannondorf? He was always my favorite. I got OK with him, nothing tournament worthy, but I could hold my own with some good players. I'd always use Jigglypuff against really good players that I just couldn't beat with Gannon, I was VERY effective with her sleep move.

Grrr. Cheapass character. She has a lot of "automatic" combos.
godhatesjustyou, make sure you learn how to "wave dance."
jimbodan, there's this Ganon player named Eddie, who owns with Ganondorf. You just need to remember that while he may move slow, his attacks are lightning fast. Use them to your advantage. Eddie puts up a good fight against top-tier characters like Marth and Sheik.

Thats exactly why I liked Gannondorg, I was never any good at moving around lightening fast in fighting games, and with Gannondorf he basically only has 1 speed, slow, so it never really mattered. He also hits pretty hard too.
