It's a thinpack, they mostly sell for $30-$50 in realistic settings. I got Angelic Layer for $24 at Fry's...

That's not true for recently released 25-27 episodes series in thinpack by ADV. Peacemaker, fullmetal paniac, and chrono crusade have all had msrps of 89.99. It's only older catalog series that have went for cheaper then that msrp like rune solider, eden's bowy, kaleido star, and angelic layer. This is a very good price for this although I agree with a previous poster that the thinpack is alot worse than the individual released dvds. They came with very nice booklets and had some interesting audio commentaries and the like.

Meh, to be honest special features in anime are usually pretty lacking. Booklets and stuff like that are fun for about 4 minutes and the commentaries are usually just some ADR or editors going on with no real interesting substance (Dunno about NGE though, and the commentaries are sometimes decent for some titles). In this particular case, buying the individual DVDs would run you at least about $40 or more (sometimes worth for other series) and it's not really worth it IMO.

By presentation I purely mean the cosmetic value of it: similar to people who prefer classic Simpsons sets to the new "character head" ones..

The ADV thin packs are cardbox with small mini cases similar to lots of dollar store DVD's..

Compared to the original platinums, which come in a glossy, sparkle filled "platinum" slipcover and a very classy looking DVD, which comes with a beautiful insert that does contain some nice art and some interesting details, it's lacking

Some extras are pretty essential to appreciating the anime.

Example - The linear notes for Azumanga Daioh. I've been a fan of anime for nearly 8 years, studied Japanese for 4 and Japanese culture for about 3. I thought I got most of the jokes in that series. Boy was I dead wrong when I read over the notes and realized just how much I missed.

With Eva, you can find all the interpretations you'll ever need on the web - no doubt.

Edit: I picked up a box set from Amazon.com - it's cheaper than most places and has free shipping. Picking it up from Walmart would be nice, but I'm too lazy to go searching for it and potentially wasting gas.

Also: I realize the packaging for the original Platinum releases were much nicer, but can anyone honestly say what worthwhile extras were on the full Platinum releases? For the most part, I remember them being commentaries with the horrible English dub cast, and pretty much nothing from the original creators of the show or anything.
