I walked over to my gaming shelf, and look for a game to play. I realized why did I buy some of these games. I'm never going to play some of those games. So I began to think that some of them I bought just cause they were cheap, Not cause I liked them. So it made me wonder would my stockpile of games would be consider a collection or a stockpile. I like some of the games I own, but just those that are in their I bought cause they were cheap make me wonder. So is a collection a lot of games that you enjoy or is a collection every game that came out for the console. This does have some philosophy aspects to it.

I think a collection has some general theme to it. One's either going for everything when it comes to videogames, or all of a particular group of games (like all Japanese-made RPGs released in the US/all US released NES games/etc.)
I was going to collect all of the prison, western and zombie games for the Xbox... but changed my mind.
So, yeah; a common, generalized theme could be considered a collection. A focused collection, really. But so can a broad collection, if you're out to solely collect video games.

I collected all of the Ridge Racer games, save for the arcade consoles... a bunch of sealed ones too, even RR64 and an RRT4 collector's box, and I was really proud of it until I realized that none of them were really worth anything. I guess that's what being a collector is about - buying just to own. I have bought games like Drakengard and Lost Kingdoms just to admire the dragons on the covers..

Buying them because they're cheap isn't so bad. I've bought them because I liked the boxes, or because I liked the concept (even if I didn't care about the actual game). Sometimes its just cause "I want that!", even if I don't know why.
Though I wouldn't spend more than 10 bucks for one of the above circumstances, in most cases anyway. I do have quite a few that I really had no interest in actually playing even when I bought them, they were just cheap and I wanted them for one reason or another.

I think something can be a collection even if it wasn't bought for collection purposes. Everygame I've bought, I wanted to at least try, but I still consider all my games a collection even though there are no themes as I find that a waste of time and money. I've bought plenty of games very cheap, but I've also sold games for as low as $1 so I obviously don't want to have everything, but I still call it a colllection.

Oi, good calls. Myself, I'm aiming to collect Japanese-made RPGS released in the US from SNES to PS2. However, I've considered limiting that to action-rpgs simply because of the number of turnbased and strategy games coming out that meet the requirement, and most of those I either can't afford or have no drive to play them.
But I find myself buying other games I actually am interested in (like Katamari Damacy/Guilty Gear) and wanting to collect what I can out of those games. I think it's a disease. ~_~'

I feel a collection can be going for completion, or themed, or as simple as having a bunch of games. Its never a stockpile, cos a stockpile implies having multiple copies of the same game. If you were hoarding a game to sell on ebay that would be stockpiling it. If you have 25 games but theres no common theme to them, thats still a collection. The only theme in my game collection is that they are almost all games that I like. Sure I got a few stinkers that I thought I would like and then didnt, but thats what Ebay is for.
