I never watch tv shows when they're on every week because I can never sit myself down at the same time every week. I'm always missing episodes here and there. So I've become big on buying tv shows on dvd. I have 24, alias, aqua teen hunger force, chapelle show, cheers, csi, dawsons creek, er, family guy, friends, homicide, in living color, jamie kennedy, king of queens, law and order, mad about you, man show, mr bean, nypd blue, oz, party of five, penn and teller, punk'd, saved by the bell, shield, simpsons, smallville, son of a beach, sopranos, southpark & x files (if you think thats crazy, check out my full dvd list in my sig). I am considering buying a few other shows on dvd, but I've never seen them and am wondering if they're good.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is a great show. Absolutely hilarious. The first season of Dark Angel is pretty good as well. Don't know about the others though

If you're interested in Buffy and Angel you might as well look into Firefly too. And if you enjoy weird humor (I'm guessing you do from a few in your list) you might want to check out Upright Citizen's Brigade and Strangers With Candy DVD sets. Both shows are very very very awesome...very.

I would recommend Angel, Six Feet Under, and Dark Angel. Six Feet Under Season 1 is one of the most brilliant seasons of television ever written IMHO. I have only seen one episode of Curb and was utterly dissatisfied with it. However, others seem to like it alot. I have Buffy seasons but I haven't watched them yet. I hear they are good background for Angel though.

Samurai Jack is a an action oriented cartoon, from the same people who did the rescent star wars shorts.
Invader Zim is another animated show, this time from nickelodeon. basically their standards and practices department was out for lunch when this was approved, as it is nothing like any other Nick show. Hell, they had to censor the TV airing of the X-mas episode because of a couple of characters being killed. BUT, its funny
Freaks and Geeks was a short lived show that was actually a dramady, and was actually kind of touching.

If you do not have it I recommend the South Park seasons. I have all three of them and love them to death. Then again I am a huge fan and never miss it when it is on TV either.

If you only own one season, season 3 is the best

Is it really? The hype surrounding Office Space is very confusing to me. It's a mediocre comedy at best and I work in an office environment. Not a big fan of Drew Caery either...just my opinion though. CAG obviously has a diverse bunch.

I highly recomend Buffy! I never watched the show when it was on because I always thought the premise sounded stupid, but I eventually bought season 1 to see what all the hyp was about and I loved it! I ended up buying seasons 1-5. 1-4 are great, 5 is a little bit lacking though. I'm pretty sure season 6 comes out at the end of the month.

Casey is right about Southpark season 3, best season out on dvd right now. I've seen every South Park episode at least twice and most much more then that (gotta love the downloads from www.mrtwig.net). The extras on the South Park dvd's kind of suck though, I wish Matt and Trey would just break down and do full commentaries instead of the mini ones.

Also check out the Futurama dvd's if you like the Simpsons.

Angel and Buffy are great shows and watching them on DVD shows what a great writer Joss Whedon is. he would foreshadow big plot points seasons in advance. It didn't surprise me that he was a big comic book buff because he writes that way

I can't recommend the Office enough. It is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, and this is coming from a guy whose life revolves around video games and cult comedy tv. I can understand some people not liking it, but if you can get past the fact that all the characters are talking with an accent and actually listen to the dialogue, then you will understand how funny this show is. The only real downside to the show is that it only ran for two seasons, and each season is only six episodes (the standard season length for british tv). Give it a chance, at least rent it. That's what I did, and within two weeks I bought both seasons. I also recommend the Mystery Science Theater 3000 dvd's and the Strangers With Candy seasons if you are interested in something a little different than your normal comedy. But please give the Office a chance, I swear you won't regret it.

Figured I'd put in my 2 cents... or a dollar. Same deal!

The Whedonverse - BUFFY the VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL: Great shows IMO, but definitely a quirky taste. If it isn't obvious, the WB-style typical perky-young casting, and super cheesy humor, lots of dork / comic book / sci-fi / horror geekdom could throw off... a lot of people. In the end they are really well plotted, well written shows with mixed though generally good characterization and acting.

That said, Buffy reruns twice a day on FX, and Angel reruns at least twice a day on TNT.

FIREFLY (Joss Whedon's last show on the air), on the other hand, I think was a huge improvement over the other two shows and much more accessible. Strange for a show that's essentially a Western set in outer space (think the anime series Cowboy Bebop or Trigun, if you've seen them). Great acting, great writing, little-to-none of the annoying quirks of the above series.

Screwed by Fox on the air, because they refused to air the original pilot until 12 EPISODES IN. Makes a super linear series such as this somewhat hard to follow. Also it screwed up the first several episodes, which were still decent, but didn't show how good the show gets later. (3 episodes weren't even aired.) Definitely worth buying, on average $30-40 for the whole series, and there may be a movie in the works.

--

FREAKS AND GEEKS. What can I say, my favorite television series, and I personally believe the best TV show in the last ten years. Coming of age comedy/drama about two sets of kids in a 1980 Michigan high school, one group a set of upperclass burnouts, the other a set of unpopular freshman geeks. Sounds cliche, doesn't it?

But it's a lot better than you would expect. MUCH BETTER. Touching characters and plots, eerily and disturbingly realistic and wacky at times. Really captures high school of any generation and age, despite being in 1980 and being a love fest to late 70's classic rock. (Lots..of..references). Highly recommended, seriously. I love this show.

Much like Firefly, screwed with by NBC executives who put the show on a 3 month hiatus after 5 episodes, constantly changed the time slot when it was on the air, and even refused to air 3 episodes.

--

SAMURAI JACK - I don't this on DVD yet, so I can't comment on the quality of the package yet, but I loved this show on Cartoon Network. A samurai is transported by a demon 3000 years into the future, when the same demon Aku has taken over the Earth and is expanding is empire. This show sold me on the stylish visuals and wonderful homage to Samurai cinema alone, but it's funny and has great action scenes. Some episodes have less than 5 lines of dialogue, everything told through action, silence and the lack of it. Excellence.

--

INVADER ZIM - a really, strange twisted cartoon by the creator of the infamous comic, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Johnen Vasquez. This show has no right to be on Nickelodeon, or any right to be as freakishly hilarious as it was. I'm not even going to bother to explain the premise of the show because after a while it doesn't even matter, it's just a backdrop for the main characters' weird antics. A grim, dark, insane, and wacky comedy. I will probably get this when it comes out.

--

In the end you can rent these shows (or at least the first DVD) from Blockbuster or a local store, so I'd definitely give 'em a shot.

Six Feet Under is an excellent dark comedy/drama; it's currently one of my favorite shows. But the DVD set is really pricey for its 13 episodes, IMHO. The second season is coming out on DVD soon... looking forward to that, though the first season is definitely the best season so far.

I agree with other people that Invader Zim is a hilarous cartoon, but I don't know how it is on DVD. My bf has the first season on Samurai Jack on DVD. He says the encoding isn't really that spectacular, and features are few. He loves the show though. I think it's okay... great art style but a little slow at times. (It likes to be "epic".)

Curb Your Enthusiasm is funny, but every episode ends with such a bitter feeling. Watching an episode makes you feel like being a jerk to other people. (At least it makes me feel that way :P )

I'd also recommend Quantum Leap, whose first season is coming out in June. I LOVED that show when I was a kid. Great sci-fi time travel stuff.

Seinfeld won't be out anytime soon. I just read the other day that Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus won't work on the DVD set, and Michael Richards is willing to do it if he gets paid, which apparently isn't an option.

I haven't seen Six Feet Under at all, but a lot of people in this thread seem to recommend it, so maybe I'll give it a shot.

I should definitely go pick up the Zim DVD. Heh.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is... really funny, yet really unsettling. More unsettling to me than funny, and not in a haha-unsettling, more like a damn-unsettling. Damn that circus music they play between every scene. But hey, it's what they were going after. I saw the first four episodes and had quite mixed feelings about it. Hilarious, yet I don't know if I can stomach any more of its silly social discomfort. A lot of yelling, sometimes it just gave me a headache.

And judyjudyjudy, considering your avatar, I would figure you would prefer more crazy. MUCH MORE CRAZY.

Yes, Guu is hella crazy... but it's like crazy-funny, and so it's funny, and like I said, I like funny :) (I'm sure that made sooo much sense.) My bf says the show gives him headaches though.

Oh, and another show I'd recommend is King of the Hill. It has surprisingly intelligent humor. The DVD sets also have pretty great commentary (by the creators and by the characters on the show, the latter of which is like watching a whole new episode). There's also a lot of neat features, like featurettes and deleted scenes.

Edited to add: By "Guu", I mean "Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu". Not available on DVD, but I'd recommend you check it out anyways. It's a very insane anime, but very funny (at least I think so) and has excellent art.

The Office, I thought, was hilarious. But they also quit after only what, 12 episodes, rather than milking it out like Hollywood does. It's also funnier if you are in the 'working world' [doesn't have to be 'an office', because most workplaces have got a couple of those people in them.]
The Office was to me what Office Space should have been. Office Space is supposed to be this huge cult hit, but it just gets a 'Meh' from me.

Upright Citizens Brigade, if you like wacky, Monty Python style sketch comedy.

Firefly. I just watched all four disks from Netflix, and I wish I had caught this show live [well, not really, because they messed it all up] to support it.

Freaks and Geeks. It makes more sense if you went to high school in the 80's or early 90's, but I guess while styles change, some of the core aspects of high school and growing up don't.

I really liked S1 of Six Feet Under, but wasn't too engaged by later seasons.

S1 of Dead Like Me is coming out, and I watched almost all of it in one weekend when I first got cable-on-demand.

If you're including anime, a couple series I've enjoyed are:
Cowboy Bebop
Excel Saga [totally wacky and unrealistic, but funny]
Cardcaptor Sakura [*not* the butchered 'Cardcaptors']. CCS is much more about Sakura and her relationships with family, friends, and herself, and not so much about Pokemon-style card collecting.

Gungrave is great. If you like The Sopranos or The Godfather, or any Mafia movie, then you should check out this entire 26 episode series. And YES I'm talking about GUNGRAVE. The story is about a guy who comes back from the dead, but the meat of the story (15 out of the 26 episodes) is about the main character's life in the Mafia. It is better than most live action Mafia flicks. You can get the import (the one I own) online for about $30.

The Office season 1 & 2 are a absolute must have if you like to laugh. that damn show is the funniest show, its too bad it will not be on any more. Definitely buy it or at the very least rent it you wont be disappointed.

I would get Reno 911 Season 1. That is the funniest show ever in my opinion!

i rented Starsky and Hutch (movie) last night and on the dvd there was an ad for Seinfeld coming to dvd by the holidays. i absolutely love the show, but consdering its on 20 times a week in syndication, there better be something on that dvd that makes it really worth it.

Futurama is another great show from Groening and co. Worth the purchase, not a lot of extras though.

There's commentary on every episode and often those are hilarious as well.

Beast Wars, Family Guy, and the entire TF Gen 1 series are all great!
And I also agree about Gungrave. I usually don't watch subtitled shows, but I own this and it rocks.

save money buy one of the bootlegged invader zim sets on ebay for 20 bucks or less. including every episode, special and unaired episodes. the 3 zim boxs could be 60 retail if they r 20 a piece.

I'm suprised that no one has mentioned the Batman Animated Series box set that just came out.

It's kinda short on the extras, but the show is awesome.

I'd get more than what I have, Simpsons Seasons 1 and 3, but they're expensive as hell. $30-40 a piece is to expensive for my blood, but if it goes under $20, there's a good chance I might get it.

My opinion is that ALL television DVD's are way over priced.

I own the Family Guy series, but that was the only one I was willing to pay for at a high price.

Dead like Me is an awesome show. Two animated series that you sort of have to have an aquired taste for them are Dilbert and The Critic. Both are very funny, especially the critic which reminds me a lot about Groening work.

Yaeh most of the T.V. DVD are over priced, but when you think about how many hours of entertainment you get compared to a regular movie, it is way more. Most of the shows are hilarious and most are better than you average movie.

I HIGHLY recommend the Futurama seasons and Invader Zim. Easily two of the best animated shows evar.

Also, I have yet to pick up the box set, but "The Critic" was pretty much my favorite animated show as a kid so check that out too.

I plan on getting The Kids in the Hall and Strangers With Candy dvds sometime, and eventually Shogun.
