I don't think many people knew about it...I could be wrong.

I'm not critisizing, I'm just asking. I knew about it for a while, but maybe that's because I watch AS a lot and heard about it quite a bit here.

senorwoohoo
12-19-2005, 08:35 PM
Oh, well, then I guess because it was a sleeper for me since I hadn't heard about it anywhere. I watch AS only once in a while and must not have posted much here when people talked about it. I will say one thing, I am happy I listened to it, especially since it got me into MF Doom.

They also released a live album, "Motion Sickness" not long ago. It's pretty good if you ask me, but I may be a bit biased.

Ok, I have small children, and I'm totally out of the music loop. Last grown up cd I bought was Stephen Kellogg, nice buy, I might add.

But Kanye West's music, is it really THAT great? I'm not really into the whole hip hop/rap, I'm cool because I'm a thug junk. But I worked with the guy's mom for almost ten years until she decided to become his manager (poor guy, her organizational skill bite and she can't use a computer, hope he's getting second opinions) so I'd actually like to listen to some of his stuff, considering I remember him best as a 14 year old.

If I don't really like hip hop, will I want to throw it out the window of a moving vehicle? Will it make me long for the Wiggles? God, no.

Im gonna have to say:

1. Beck- Guero/Guerolito combo (i heard some Guerolito at a friend's house. Out of the 5 songs i heard (which were my 5 favorite from Guero) 4 were good, Ghost Range (E-Pro), meh)

2. Ok Go- Oh No (I bought OKGO's original CD back in 7th grade after hearing Get over It on Madden. It was not my usual thing, but it grew on me; now 3 years later im listening to thier new cd nonstop)

3. Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have It So Much Better (Somehow, i feel like I'm going to get flamed for this; I like Franz, and the new CD is great, but hopefully they will try something new with their next album)

4. Dane Cook- Retaliation (Wow, some of the funniest stuff of the year. Even though you can't really listen to the same comedy cd a lot (jokes get old), this still deserves to be on the list simply because it could get many more mainstream people buying comedy cds. Hopefully, by this time next year some company will wise up, find some good talent, and we can see a few comedians on the top selling lists)

5. Reel Big Fish- We're Not Happy Until You're Not Happy (Not a lot to say... It's Reel Big Fish!)

i don't have a #1 favorite, but here are my ten favorite records of the year, in alphabetical order:

ryan adams - "jacksonville city nights" (though i also enjoyed "cold roses" and "29")
architecture in helsinki - "in case we die"
boris - "akuma no uta"
giant drag - "hearts and unicorns"
iron and wine - "woman king"
metric - "live it out"
pelican - "the fire in our throats will beckon the thaw"
queens of the stone age - "lullabies to paralyze"
maria taylor - "11:11"
torche - "torche"

that's just off the top of my head, so i'm sure i'm forgetting something that i really liked, and i also didn't get the chance to hear everything i wanted to yet from this year.

surprisingly, i could probably come up with another ten records that i thought were pretty darn good this year.

First, his music isn't that great. It is good but a lot of people treat him like the second coming of Jesus, which he is not. The worst part is that Kanye actually believes he's that good and acts like he's the king of the world. Kanye can do some good beats, but if you take something he does the beat for and someone else (like Jay-Z) does the vocals and compare that song to something Kanye does the vocals on there is no comparison. Kanye should have just stayed a producer. You might actually like some of his stuff though, he is in no way shape or form a thug nor does he try to be one (just look at how he dresses, he puts even the whitest white guy to shame). He only had one song that was about "money rims and hoes" and that was mostly just poking fun at materialistic rap.

Mindless Self Indulgence - You'll Rebel to Anything/only disappointing thing was how short this thing is.

Rev Run - Distortion/Another short but sweet cd

Dream Theater - Octavarium

Reggie and The Full Effect - Songs not to get Married to

Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine/you can't go wrong with a woman fronted metal band

Gym Class Heroes - the papercut chronicles

Kanye needs a good kick in the ass. Perhaps another year without a Grammy will be a big enough hint that he really isn't the best thing since sliced bread.

See, now that's what makes me crack up at him being a 'rap' star. Guy's the most white bred kid I knew of my coworkers. I remember when his mom gave him a year for this 'music thing' because he wasn't doing that great in school.

For the record, I do like some hip hop, but not the gangsta stuff. Although Jay-Z I do like because he actually goes with the melodies, not against them, which most rappers do. Totally gone off topic. Maybe I'll just download some and see.

I like a decent amount of rap/hip-hop and I can't stand what I've heard from Kanye West. He's just another rapper that the media brought too much attention to and that too many people are thinking that he is so great when he really isn't.

As for the best album of 2005, that is going to none other than... An Answer Can Be Found by CKY. I've been listening to that album every single day for a few months now. Great cd, even if it isn't their best work... Actually, I think 'Infiltrate-Destroy-Rebuild-' and 'Volume 1' are better, but when you're comparing it to flawless classics, thats not a really bad thing to be a little worse than them. HM goes to 'Power to the People and the Beats' by Public Enemy. Yes, I'm aware that its a Greatest Hits cd, but its still a great album with many excellent songs.

So many people are quite fond of Kanye's CD this year, and yet I thought it was mostly garbage. Seriously, what happened to all the goodness from College Dropout? Anyway, I'd have to say these were my favorites:

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
DangerDoom - The Mouse and the Mask

I'm guessing no one here has heard it, but there's a local band here called Tally Hall. They released their first CD (Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum) in November, and it seemed like half of the people at one of their shows two months later knew all of the words to every song.

In any case, it's just darn good music, and everyone that I've talked into listening to the group has loved them.

It doesn't really match their overall style, but a Google search for one of their songs, "Banana Man," turned up this music video (http://www.tallyhall.com/bman_high.htm) for the song. I know that there are MP3s of this and a few other songs drifting around (the band released demo versions to help with promotion), but I don't have the links at the moment.

I'm having a hard time remembering which cds I bought were new this year. Of what I can remember, my favorite is Nirvana's "Silver: Best of the box." (It convinced me that the real box set was worth getting.)

I also really liked the latest Warped Tour and Punk-o-Rama releases (talk about cheap-ass music), and there were a couple of Greatest Hits albums I picked up (Alanis, The Beastie Boys). And of course, the White Stripes album was great also.

My biggest disappointments were the new Staind and Cold cds.

I'm going to add Audioslave's "Out of Exile" to my list. This is a bit of a shock for me because I had really high hopes for their first CD and I didn't really like it at all. I wasn't expecting much from the second CD and kind of listened to it once and dismissed it but for some reason I decided to give it a second chance. I find myself listening to it a lot more than I listen to other CDs that I initially liked better. So yeah, "Out of Exile" is on my Top 10 of 2005 list...

That one would make my "Most disappointing CDs of 2005" list, and it would take the top 10 spots.

Most of the stuff I listened to in '05 was pretty old (the Stooges re-issues in '05 were awesome)... but off the top of my head, two albums from last year that I really did enjoy were:

"Separation Sunday" by the Hold Steady (phenomenal band)

and

"A Healthy Distrust" by Sage Francis
