nothing I ever buy for my PC can ever be easy :(
Ive had a router for a year and a half with my PC xbox and PS2 online without problems. I got a "new" unopened but 2003 dell computer and set it up and ran a line from the router down to the dell. No matter what I do I cant get this fucker online. Ive tried all the IP configs, the optain IP addy automatically, changed the speed of the net card to 10base and a bunch of other stuff.
I even tested the cable itself to make sure its a good connection and it is. I also replaced my regular PCs cable with it to see if it works and its perfect. But for some reason this dell cannot load up websites.
On my regular PC I can input my routers IP and it will bring me to its setup..but the one downstairs cant get into it.

Have you checked to see if drivers are needed for the network card? There might be a driver cd. One thing I would do is to right click on My Computer and go to the manage option. That brings up the computer management window. There are alot of useful tools here. Go to Device Manager and click on Network Adaptors. If there is a problem with the network card, a red x will be next to it. There also could be a yellow question mark which means the drivers aren't likely installed.
Checking that might tell us some more of what is wrong.
It would have been better to put this in the PC board.

Are you on the network at all or is it just a problem with the internet?

Well my router has the PC and xbox and ps2 and all work fine. When all four are plugged in, everything but the new PC works. Ill look in the device manager thing tommorow. I'll also bring the new pc up here and double check if a direct modem connection will work.

This sucks...I hooked up the dell right into my modem and it wont work. I switch it back to my older PC and its fine. I have tried a whole bunch of settings and rebooted the dell and modem a bunch of times but still nothing.
I called Dells tech support and talked to some guy that I had to struggle to hear what he was saying. Together we both established that my dell has an IP adress...great. After the dell still not getting online, he transfers me to this woman who thinks Im going to pay $99 to talk to a tech for this one problem. She says I can get a year of support for $249.... They both kept telling me it was my ISP's fault. Not likely.
But anyway heres my current situation... The Dell hooks directly to the cable modem the net cards acess light and activity light both flash like its working. An IP addy search gives me an Ip and when I unhook it the computer notices that its unhooked. No websites will load...I cant connect to anything like live update. Since its a fresh out of the box PC I am positive its not anything like a virus or anything like that.

Its a long shot, but do you have any kind of address filtering on in the router? (MAC or IP) That would cause you to get an IP but not be able to connect to anything....

like said above...check to make sure the correct driver for the network adapter is installed.
And a think i always do is open up a command prompt (start -> Run -> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig")
that will display the current ip address you have. if you did this on your other computer, you would most likely get a 192.168.1.x address but if your computer is not seeing the router, the new dell PC will most likely get a 169.254.x.y address.
But yes, make sure you are getting an ip address first.

Thanks for the tips...but like I said even without the router and a direct connection it still wont work. IP config gives me an IP but nothing else...Im going to see if I can bring it to my dads friend.

Are you asking for help? it seems to me like you're just dismissing everyone's suggestions right off the bat. If you are, indeed, looking for help, I may consider putting in the time and effort to help, otherwise, I suppose we can let this die as a "I can't figure this out, so I'll complain" thread.

I have tried some of the things mentioned on this thread. just that I dont check off everything doesnt mean I havent done/tried it.
