I am going to pick-up one of the following games Call of Duty 2 or FEAR or Quake 4 for PC at Worst Buy today. I have $40 on a gift card and I have the $10 off coupon.

Which one would you guys recommend?

I am steering towards FEAR because I have heard a lot of good things about it, plus it's on sale at BB for $39.99 ($29.99 after coupon).

My PC is a few years old, but I am running Battlefield 2 without problems (not sure at what res or settings though):

I have a AMD Athlon 2500+ OCd to 3200+
512mb Ram (thinking of changing to 1GB, I know this will help alot)
Geforce FX 5600 Video Card (thinking of upgrading to maybe a $100 or $150 card)

Thanks!

I'd say Quake4. I dont like the WW kick FPSes are going through and fear was good, but Q4 was better.

Fear was a beast for me to run. Im running a p4 3400, 1gb ram, and an ATI x850 xt 256mb platinum, and it still chugged at parts.

I have COD2 and am having a blast with it, even though I usually dont play WWII FPS's, but this one is just sooo good.

F.E.A.R. is also really really good.

I haven't played Quake 4, but I hear its pretty good but not great.

I would go with either F.E.A.R. or COD2....If you think your PC will run it then go for F.E.A.R. otherwise COD2.

Try out the F.E.A.R. demo, and if it runs, go for it. If not, get Call of Duty 2. I haven't heard much about Quake 4.

I would say FEAR, but I doubt your comp can even run it.
This is my comp:
P4 3.0 GHz (w/ H.T.)
MSI Nvidia 6800 256/256
1 GB DDR 2 RAM
and it still struggled at medium settings. It's a resource HOG!

So decide wheter you like futuristic or historical games better, and make a choice.

fear is great.. but probably not for the rig your currently running

Er.... I played FEAR with minimal problems with a 2.2ghz, 1gb ram, 9700PRO machine. I didn't have it maxed on anything, but it still looked good and was fun. The physics were a bit odd though. Things would shake from not sitting right and tables would jump 5 feet when I just brushed them.

I'm pretty sure your computer won't run FEAR(And if it will, it will run on low settings). I suggest Call of Duty 2. I'm loving the game right now, and it doesn't require as much stuff as FEAR and Quake 4.

OK tried the FEAR Demo on work PC, it is specd like this:

Radeon X300 SE 128 video
1gb Ram
P4 3.4

It worked fine, though some of the video setteings were set low.

I am going to give the demo a try tonight at home before buying the game.

FEAR is freaky though. That little girl scares the crap out of me. LOL

About $1300-$1400 (can't remember how much), not including Monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse - I already had those from my older comp.

Either FEAR or CoD2 depending on your comp. Don't bother with Q4, it's not all that great compared to the others.

CoD2 also has a demo you can try. Basically if you like all out madness (Insane sound effects, bullets flying everywhere, artillery going off, INSANE action) in your FPS games, CoD2 is the way to go. But the firefights are a lot better in FEAR, and it has extremely intelligent AI.

Also, I think FEAR won't run as well on your comp if your video card doesn't do shadows well, because it loses a lot of atmosphere without shadows.

OK, picked up Quake 4 and FEAR tonight at Target with my Christmas gift card. :)

I will try to install one of them tomorrow, probably FEAR first, just to see how poorly it runs.

How do I test my FPS in FEAR?

If it doesn't play well enough, I may go and get the following:

Corsair 1GB RAM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440)

EVGA Geforce 6600GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220)

After the rebate it would be a little less than $200 to upgrade my PC.

Call of Duty 2 is excellent, but very similar to the first.
FEAR is great as well, but can be pretty repetitive.
Quake 4 is merely okay, a standard shooter.

u stupid fools talkin about quake 4 dont play fps . it simple breakdown like this.

if u want to play non-competitve game play COD2 and F.E.A.R
if u want to play a competitive game play Quake 4. simple as that.

Competitive im talkin about actual tournaments. Big tournaments, not no small scale lan tourney.

ppl who say it aint all that great seems to know little of the quake series. I own all 3 games.

Another vote for FEAR if your PC can handle it.

If your machine can run it, go with FEAR. Quake IV was an interesting shooter, but quickly got old with the enemy 'strafe left, strafe right while firing' AI.

OK I installed FEAR just now and it runs but barely. Here are the Frame Per Second results:

Auto detected settings:

Computer: Medium
Video: Custom (most settings set to minimal)

FPS:
Min: 6
Avg: 11
Max: 16

100% below suggested minimum of 25 FPS.

I played it at these settings, and it sucks, very laggy and I haven't even shot at anything yet.

Then changed to:

Computer: Minimum
Video: Minimum

FPS:
Min: 52
Avg: 119
Max: 251

Obviously ran much faster, but graphics were horrible.

I didn't play it at these settings, I am now going to get the 1gb Corsair kit and probably a Geforce 6600GT.

I am going to try Quake 4 now to see if it runs better until I get my new hardware.

I was also thinking of maybe just buying a new Dell with 1gb Ram. Maybe I can find a deal out there with a LCD, then unload the LCD on ebay or something. My keyboard, mouse, monitor, and HDDs are fine. I also have a 16x DVD burner and 52x cd burner. Really all I need is a New processor/board, new RAM and a decent Video card. If I went the Dell route, I could swap parts, then give this PC to my son.

Hmmm, I'll have to start shopping around to see if it's worth upgrading parts or just buying a new Dell.

Bad idea. Dells are notorious for using proprietary power connections and other hinderances to ugrades.

you shouldn't have to pay over 100 dollars to play a new game, get CoD2

LOL I hear that. After looking into it a bit, I think I will just stick with getting the RAM and a 6600GT AGP card. I have been meaning to upgrade my PC, so it's not a big deal to spend a couple hundred.

As for the Dells not being able to be upgraded. I specd one out with

p4 3.0ghz
1gb RAM
80 GB HD
19" LCD (would sell this on ebay for $270)
etc, etc.

for $679 after Rebates.
Then $409 after unloading the LCD.

I would still have to get a new PCIe Video card for around $120 after rebate.

Final price would be about $530 for a new PC.

Alot of work and more money than I want to spend.

Gonna try Q4 tomorrow. :)

Glad to hear you own all 3 Quake games, including Quake FOUR. :P

Anyway, here's a link to a single stick of 1gb ram...if you plan on putting more ram in later, this will save you money in the long run.

Yeah but if I get 2 512mb sticks I can run them Dual Channel, which is faster than using a single stick of 1gb.

I've got all 3 (and the SE's no less) and FEAR was definitely the best of the 3. Call of Duty 2 comes in 2nd and Quake 4 comes in 3rd. All of the games are great, but FEAR was simply the most intense game of the bunch. I loved the action, the atmosphere, the tension -- everything about the game simply blended together perfectly. I'm not sure if your video card could handle the game and you'll definitely want at least 1 GB of RAM, but as far as game quality, there's no question that FEAR is the best by far.

Which has the best multiplayer?

As for the OP, if ur in the market for a new comp, CC is gonna sell a new gateway for around 770 and you could upgrade that. I dotn know much about it but I know that it is a AMD x2 3800+ or for 100 more you get the 4200+, more info on it will be available soon. or you could go for this comp from HP:

3800 + (dual core)
250 gb
1 gb ddr2-sdram
pci-e
300 watts psu

its 850 after AR its a bit expensive and there arnt many psu's that go well with it tho.

Again:
Multiplayer: Q4 hands-down
Singleplayer: F.E.A.R. hands-down

there really are not all that many people playing Quake 4 though. I got it around Christmas time and the amount of games with a lot of people playing was quite limited. Fear had a good sized online community last time I checked and call of duty 2 is always in the top ten as far as minutes accumulated on xfire (means that there are a ton of people playing online)
