This is why we also came up with the plan to print your own barcodes. Hence you can check without having to harass the register monkey, or have to argue the price with them
All the people at my Target are friendly with me and I have no problems getting them to check prices. Whatever happened to customer courtesy?

I asked a Target employee to scan Unlimited Saga (behind the glass), since it still showed it at $50. He said he was sure it was still $50, apparently it had been recently tagged. It's hard to believe they still have it at that price...
This is a technique used by lazy employees to piss you off. Provided it isn't in the clearance bin next week, ask them to take it down for you to buy, after they scan it and ask for the money if the total they ask for is 50 bucks just tell em you dont want it. They cant really do anything to you about that.
i had the same problem just last night. i asked her to scan it anyways and it didn't show up in the system and she said she can't sell it. i asked to speak to a manager, and he came and scannned it with a hand held scanner and it showed up as $7.48.

I scanned the Zelda bonus disc at Toys R Us last week, and it came up to a ridiculous amount of like $59.99. It reminds me of the time I saw the SJRF/Sega GT 2002 Xbox bonus disc on sale separately at Best Buy for $99.99. I really doubt the store expects to sell too many of them.
A friend of mine wasn't paying much attention at the register and ended up paying $40 at Best Buy for that Gamecube demo disc with Viewtiful Joe, Splinter Cell, etc.

 Please remember that your local Target *may not* mark clearance items with a sticker, and some do not even remove them from the glass case.
The best strategy for obtaining clearanced Target games in your area is to use the "UPC symbol trick" as documented previously in this thread.

I just got back from Target and found a great deal. Target (at least in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area) is having a great sale on certain XBox Platinum Hits and a few other Gamecube games. Instead of the regular $19.99 sticker price, they are reduced to $14 BUT only until this Saturday Dec 20, 2003. Some games include:
XBox - Spiderman
XBox - Conflict Desert Storm
XBox - Ghost Recon
Gamecube - Luigi's Mansion
But there's more. When I went, both Spiderman and Conflict Desert Storm were sold out, so I asked for a rain check on each. The rain check ticket at Target reads as follows:
#################################
We apologize for being out-of-stock on the item you were looking for. Here are some options for you to consider.
PRICE RAIN CHECK
Use this to receive the advertised sales price at any Target store until 01/31/04
ITEM Description blah blah blah $14.00
Reg. $19.99 @ 30% off
CHOOSE A SUBSTITUTE
Choose a substitute and receive the same percentage off (listed above) on a regular-priced item within the same product category (i.e. TV for TV, doll for doll, shirt for shirt).
###################################
So that means you can go to Target, and until Saturday, pick any of the games listed for $14. If you don't want any of those games, find one that is sold out and ask for a rain check. Then, just use your rain check ticket to get 30% off of ANY video game.
can i use the raincheck i got today for luigi's mansion next week on an xbox game or is just until the sale ends. the raincheck says it good until 2/2/04 but do you think the csr will honor it for another game after they have luigi back instock?
just curious.
thanks

Well it says to choose a substitute. If they give you grief just go to another target (if you're within driving distance). Or tell him that you got it at another target already and they didn't have some other game that you wanted so you came back here to get it and didn't think of getting yet another raincheck. Be creative if you have to! Of course i'm always walking in thinking worst case scenario.

What an experience this was...
Okay, I asked for Luigi's Mansion, and they didn't have it. Cool. "Can I get a rain check?"
The guy pauses, looks off... mumbles, "Yeah." He then asks how many I'd like. I wasn't thinking, and was just ecstatic and replied, "Oh, just one."
Then I felt stupid -- and started regreting my response. "Don't get greedy," my wife warned me. I did anyway, so I went back, checked for other missing $19.99=$14 sale games -- couldn't find any of Desert Storm for the X-Box, so I of course asked for it. None? Oh shucks, I'll take two rain checks, please. :)
I deliberate on what I wanted for real -- wanted Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Saphire, and figured I'd picked up SSX: Tricky for $7 (30% off $9.99) as well. I turn to the guy, and low and behold, he found a Desert Storm for X-Box. Now what? I don't even OWN an X-Box! Oh... well, do you have two? Cause remember, I needed two, and if I can't get one for this other guy, I'll be screwed... eh, yeah, that's it.
He looked so confused. "No, I'll just take the substitution..." And he's like, "You can't substitute something we have." So I was like, "Okay, but you can substitute Nintendo for Nintendo, right?"
Nope -- just GameCube for GameCube. So, I ended up getting SSX3 for $37 (after tax), which ain't so bad, and I'm subtracting some money for selling some free games I had gotten recently, so in the end I made out alright. But after getting into it with several people at K-Mart, trying to get them to price match their website with Pikmin, and not succeeding there either -- I'm worn out!
~Dak
PS: IF ANYONE MISSED THIS 30% OFF DEAL, and own an X-Box -- I have a Quantity 2 for Conflict: Desert Storm I, so if your local Target is out of this game, and you want 30% off two X-Box games -- PM me, and maybe we can work out a little dealio (PS/S: I'm all about the GC/GB/GBC/GBA -- :) ). You could save up to $30 with this slip! (It says, "At any Target store until 02/04/04").

I posted this a while ago, percentages can go into the 50s sometimes. Target is trying to get back at me for doing this while I worked there, but they won't return my phone calls. It's legal, but some stores may have issues with it. Just come back another time and try again. It's stackable with online coupons.

So I've got this, "Reg. $19.99 @ 30% off -- Choose a substitute and receive the same percentage off (listed above) on a regular-priced item within the same product category (i.e. TV for TV)."
Now, that's a bit untrue. It's apparently got to be "brand for brand" too (though I suspect it's different with each and every store). My store didn't have some lame ass replacement crap game for the game that's out of stock -- other's stores do. Other's allow you to substitute any game for any game. I hate the inconsistency. :(
Anyway -- we just have to check in here and find out what percentage off sales are going on, and then find the games that're out-of-stock, raincheck them -- and BAM!?
Sweet.

So, Lion King, for the GBA, huh? Awesome -- I was wanting Pokemon Pinball for the GBA, but they wouldn't let me turn a GameCube 30% off into a GBA 30% off. My offer for 2, 30% receipts still stands, especially if anyone's willing to just pick me up one of these 40% off Lion King on the GBA deals.

Yo. Hi. I need 30% PS2 & 30% on Gamecube, I'll trade 44% off Lion King for some. Damn. I asked for 5 Lion king rainchecks and they gave me one receipt w/ quantity 5. So I'll look like a super ass when I use it. Unfortuntaely I was only able to use mine for Gameboy games so yea I'm willing to trade.
LOL Someone should set up a Target raincheck trade site w/ feedback ala eBay haha.
PS: My friend in kali does not have the Lion King deal. It's $30 there. Will they still honor that raincheck? haha

Well unfortunately my raincheck is for two, 30% off X-Box games, if your local Target is out of "Conflict: Desert Storm" -- but applied to two, $50 X-Box games, that's a $30 savings.
I'm gonna give this "Lion King" thing a shot, unless there's any takers on what I got. :)

This is kind of funny. People are starting to go out looking for specific games and hoping the store DOESN'T have them.
"Excuse me, do you have Lion King for GBA?"
"Yes we do, here it is."
"Oh, that's too bad."
or
"Man, I've been to three Targets today, and they all had the games I was looking for. This sucks!"

I just hope the same guy isn't in the Electronics section as last time. He either knew I was up to something, or thought I was stoned (my wife noted my eyes were really bloodshot, and the guy probably just thought I was messed up, lol).

Okay, I called my local Target, and they said today couldn't be the last day of a sale, because their sales begin and end on Sunday -- thus Monday can't be the last day of the "Lion King" sale.
THEN, I call another one and get some crap about how it was a price-cut, and I can't get a raincheck on a price-cut, just on sales. Oh, and they're out of stock too.
Can't anyone that's succeeded at this at their local Target help a brotha out?

Wait, so a raincheck works how? I'm reading posts over and over, and I still don't get it. Or at least, I slightly get it.
puzzlefite
12-23-2003, 08:03 PM
Read the first page. Basically the percentage off the game on the raincheck can be applied to other games.
For example:
Lion King for GBA was 44% off last week. You can get a raincheck for it if it was sold out at your store. On the raincheck it says you get 44% off a substitution. This is where stores vary. The policy is so ambiguous. Ask someone at the store. Here are the possible interpretations of substitution on the receipt.
1. "There are no substitutions at this time." You're outta luck. Raincheck can only be used for Lion King.
2. "Substitute for same game system only." So if you have raincheck for 44% off Lion King, you can use on a GBA game not PS2! You can then get 44% off GBA Mario Kart.
3. Substitute for any other video game. So if yo u have raincheck for 44% off Lion King, you can get 44% off FFX2.
Basically ask guest services, manager, and people working at electronics until you get the answer you want! Some employees may state a different policy than the next person. Then just get there name & you should be set. :-D Be sure to ask if you can substitute when the game goes back in stock too. Hope that helps!
starman9000
12-23-2003, 09:11 PM
Its not "where stores may vary" it is where clerks may vary. But it says clearly on the rain check that you can "CHOSE" a subsitute. If that helps anyone.

I have a question for you guys? When a Target is going to close down, will it move its stuff or clearance it off? My target down the street is closing, being torn down, and super target being built. I'm hoping to get some good deals. It closes on the 16th of Jan.
puzzlefite
12-23-2003, 10:51 PM
Yes it does say that. "Choose a substitute." But one of my stores are arguing there are no substitutes you know what I mean. I think that should be left up to the store. For example, if you try to get a refund w/o a receipt they don't have to honor that if they don't want to. I think this is the same deal.
The fact that you can get infinite rainchecks means even if it has to be same game system & same price, it is still abusable. So I think stores should be able to do what they want.
puzzlefite
12-23-2003, 10:53 PM
Well. The stores around here have different policies. However the clerks have generally been consistent with the entire store. Oh wellz I'm off for more action tonite. Wish me luck. :-D

Let's not.........maybe a new thread with that subject would be a better idea.
This is supposed to be the Target Clearence Thread, I really don't want to have to sift through 50 posts about what's on sale 'cause I'm perfectly capable of reading those nice glossy ads they print with the paper every Sunday.
It's been 2 weeks since any of my local Targets have added to the clearance merchandise. Perhaps we will see more closeouts after the holiday season.

I don't think Target does in-store pickups of online orders. The best you could hope for is to buy the item and ask them to give you the clearance price - most stores will price match their own drops.
So...any cool GBA or PC titles on clearance lately? I'd love to get another deal like Sonic Advance for $6.50... :D

You have to find a better spot in the store to stash, like in the toy department somewhere, or in the housewares, it's all about finding a place where it won't be seen, but don't keep it in the section, the crafty will find them.

I remember having to actually go through all of the aisles back when I worked retail and actually lift all of the shelves to check that people weren't stashing things under the bottom shelf of a rack of shelving. Not all stores have it, but some older shelving units actually have a bottom shelf that can be lifted up... you'd be amazed at how much stuff people tried to stash under there... Hot Wheels, stuff on clearence, etc.

Just wanted to thank the fellow who mentioned SSX Tricky. It's definately not as good as SSX3, but considering it was $5, I feel it was WELL worth it.
So these aren't all clearance, in the sense that they're just laying around in that cheapy section, right? Some actually are BEHIND glass? Becuase SSX Tricky was out of case, and since I hadn't printed up the code, was the only reason I was able to price it and buy it.
I'll have to start printing those UPC codes out now.

Wow, that sucks. You know they are obligated to give you the item for what it scans at. Haven't you ever seen those tell all stories that 20/20 or Dateline does about register scanning errors. Most of the time, things scan at more than what they are marked, in which case, unless you say something, you get ripped off, it some cases they scan for less in which case, they are obligated to sell it to you for that amount as it is their error. Same thing goes for when items are mis signed. They are obligated to sell it to you for what the sign says. I got Zone of the Enders 2 when it first came out for $14.99 at Circuit City because some employee stocked all of the ZOE2 where the first ZOE (which was on sale that week for $14.99) went. There were about 7 ZOE2 behind the $14.99 sign that said Zone of the Enders- $14.99 and not one of the first ZOE. I took it to the service desk, told them the sign said $14.99, they adjusted the price and gave it to me for that, then they went and took the sign down. I would have raised hell if I were you.

Too bad BB wouldn't give me THUG for free when thats what its price tag said. I kid you not $0.00 is exactly what the tag said.
Kind of OT here, but the first post in the thread points you to websites that generates UPC's for you. Is there a program out there for Palm OS that will do the same thing? That way I can just punch in the numbers and scan my Palm Pilot. It would make things a whole lot easier, but I can't seem to find one.
I would love to be able to do this on my palm!
But wouldn't the reflectiveness of the LCD screen present a problem?

Question... My target is in a mall area (northgate mall by seattle, WA), and dosn't appear to have a clearance section at all... What are the chances of the games that are posting as clearance on here, to be the same there? Seeing as Im a minor, I figure an employee would get pretty annoyed if I asked for them to take a game out of the case, have them scan it at full price, and ask me to put it back. While Im sure they'd do it, for the most part I perfer to avoid causing problems... makes things for everyone easier.

Picked up the last PSO for Xbox, but it rang up at $9.98 on the handscanner (as it rang up 0 at the register), not $4.98 as some others. A shame, since I spent so much time building up my characters in PSO for Gamecube and don't have a broadband adapter, now I have to do it all over again on the Xbox!! Even the rain checks stink this week (Midnight Race for $14.99 sold out, so you can get 25% off rain checks).

Thanks for posting your findings though guys.

The bitch about making a Target list is that every store is different.
Anyone know about how long it takes for an item to hit the next clearance level? Ballpark.

I saw Arc the Lad (PS2) for that $20.98 price at the Target in Middletown, NJ. But, since I just spent $58 on SEVEN games at CC last night, I was a little leary about dropping that money. Hopefully I won't regret it. I really went there for that Xenosaga deal but apparently they were sold out. The stinking problem is that since most of the games are behind glass, you can't go through them all with a fine tooth comb. I mean, there COULD be one copy of Xenosaga sandwiched between the tens of copies of American Idol collecting dust, yes? Yes. Oh well...

I'm not going to read through this whole thread to see if this has already been posted, but a couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon Phantasy Star Online for Gamecube. They must have found it in the back because I've looked for it several times in that store since I heard they went on Clearance back in the Fall. The price was $15.

An item starts as ACTIVE...then it moves to DISCONTINUED..and usually if it doesn't sell out of its copies they send it back there copies before it hits clearance to save money so only a few times will you ever see clearance b/c at the Target I work theres about 20 discountinued games in the display case which means they will slowly one by one be shipped back and replaced with newer games.

I too work at Target and we never, ever send games back at mine. They go on Clearance, even if it does take forever. DVDs we send back all the time, and those don't ever go on clearance, as I'm sure you know.

first off I never find good deals at my target. But today I found for the PC
Tiger Woods PGA 2002 for 4.00
NeverwinterNights PC for 8.00
Eventhough the golf is 2002, the graphics and gameplay are amazing and I just started a NWN game , so far its pretty good too.

This actually makes some sense. I have 2 Targets in my city, and they are totally different. One seems to have games on clearance once or twice a month, the other never does. My guess is the one store sends the games to the other store. Also, if the games stay in the display cases, they tend to move out. If they go to a clearance section, I am pretty sure that they stay around forever - Because people don't know where they are... And I have cleaned up a couple of times.
Oh well,

how does this clearance sale at target work, cause everytime i go, theres not much on sale, or is it you have to get those games and scan them?
Monsta Mack
01-16-2004, 10:18 PM
You have to scan the items at a price scanner or ask an employee. Target has a few in the store, and theres usually always one by electronics. Not all of the clearance items are placed outside of the case, but occasionaly they are. I would keep an eye on this thread and post any new deals you find, It's better to check here first before going into Target looking for the deals, as most of the time it takes forever for an employee to arive to help you check prices, not to mention the lazy employees who will tell you It's the tagged price and not bother doing an inquiry at all.
For recent games all I have seen are (clearances and flat out price cuts):
ESPN Nhl Hockey $29.99 PS2
Maximo $10 and lower
Metal Gear Solid (not substance) $10 and lower
Original Virtua Fighter 4
Dynasty Warriors 4 $29.99 for XBox and PS2
Maximum Chase $19.99 XBox
Supposively PSO for XBox and GC are both on clearance.

Easier way in Monroeville,PA target*have to check the other local area targets*..You don't even have to go through the hassle of printing the barcodes(although I am sure it would be faster)They have the newer scanners that allow you to enter the barcodes in by hand on their Price Checkers located throughout the store. :)

Lucked out earlier. Went to get the last MM Zero (which scans up as $0.00) the guy in electronics checked me out and let me have the game for nothing as he was paying no attention to what he was scanning.
Although I would have thought any moron would have checked the receipt considering my total was only $4, he just looked at the game and said "man that's a cheap game". :D
Just thought I would share my little experience.

Mace didn't register at all on the scanner, so it's probably about to get sent back at the stores that do that.

Not necessarily for a system but a video game just the same. The Target in Federal Way, WA had the BeyBlade VForce Arcade Challenge 5 in 1 game system originally priced as $44.99, marked down to a mere $11.12. Great for the little kids who are into this genre. Plugs directly into your TV, and can be multiplayer with mail-away offer. People were buying 3-5 of them at a time for birthdays and Christmas next year. Feel sorry for the ones who bought it before XMAS for $59.95 at TRUS.
