Since the Target deals are usually of the "your mileage may vary" type, let's keep all the target clearance deals in this thread.
Here is a fairly easy way to check if your local Target has the games on clearance without making the store clerk unlock the display case and price-scan a bunch of games. Very often, games may be on sale, but will not be marked as such.
BigDirty came up with this nice time saver. Respect his cheap ass skills.
1) Check this thread for games that have been reported on clearance.
2) Go to www.half.com (http://www.qksrv.net/click-1312731-1100794?url=http%3A%2F%2Fhalf.ebay.com%2Fproducts% 2Fgames%2Findex.cfm), http://bits.com/ or similar website and search for the game to locate its UPC code number. Its in the grey box underneath the box art graphic.
3) Go to www.schworak.com/upc/ , www.milk.com/barcode/ , or www.upcdatabase.com and enter the code so you can print out the UPC.
4) Go to Target and use the price scanners to scan your printouts and search for cheap ass deals!
FYI: "When a game's price ends with 8 cents, further reduction is possible, when it ends in 4 cents, that's the ball game, pick it up cause it's not going any lower. If it ends in 9 cents, it's just on sale or on a non-clearance reduction." - BigDirty

I saw Resident Evil at my local Target for about 7 dollars last week. And also Onimusha 2 for 10, a few months ago.
aghhhhh!
I was just there yesterday and I didn't see the hotshot golf markdown :-(
Is it in the glass case?
on that wall directly behind the glass cases?
Or
that stand-alone display to the left of the glass game cases as your coming in to the electronic section specifically for greatest hits?
BigDirty

It's in the glass case, but it's not marked. You have to find a schmuck, I mean target employee, to get it out of the case. It seems that they are sometimes off on their clearance pricing there, hence why I like to go in with my own set of barcodes to scan. (Hence how I found out HSG3 is 7.50)
Also they have NHL 2003 marked for $14.98 but actually scans in at $19.99

Also, the Target in Oxford Valley/Langhorne PA, had a copy of Amplitude (I didn't check price because I own it, but a fine game indeed), and Sega NBA 2K3 and EA NCAA Football 2003 both for PS2 on clearance as well, in mass quantities.

BigDirty....A Question About That Process.
How do you actually print off those UPCs into a Word Document. I wanted to make a whole sheet of UPCs so I could have all the games I wanted to check on one sheet.
I saved the image (saved it as an .xbm file). I was wondering if it would degrade the image if I saved it as someting else. I can't paste into Word with the current file format.
Also, is there anything I have to set up in order for the UPC to print properly or if I print it straight off the site, would those work?
Thanks.
BigDirty
09-22-2003, 02:35 PM
I actually copy the image to the clipboard (highlight and right click) and then just shift-insert it into the document.
As far as degrading the image, I doubt that would be a problem. UPCs are 2 colors, technically only one, and compression main deals with colour depth.
Printing straight off the site should be fine, especially if you have a place where you don't have a problem cranking out page after page (like a work or school printer).

Wow, Wixom, MI. I just had a job interview at that Target today. They don't pay too much so I'm going to stick with my current job. I live about 10 minutes from Wixom. They aren't usually a very good Target for clearance, but I did pick up NBA 2K3 there for $6.50-something there.

They'll be VERY good for clearance not too long from now. its still a relatively new store, so most of thier stuff hasnt had time to go down, that goes along with the fact its not very high traffic yet.

I officially love my Target.
If I haven't felt that way before, I do now.
I picked up Amplitude there for 7.48, clearanced. It wasn't in the Greatest Hits section, but instead, in the glass case, but marked down nonethless.
But the barcode scanning doesn't work for me. I wonder why. The price scanners doesn't seem to pick up on the barcodes.

Muchos Kudos to the originators of this topic! :P
At my Target, Primal (in the loose value games section) had a sale sticker that said it was 20.98 marked down from 29.99 and then scanned for 7.48. :)
I asked an employee to check the price on Amplitude for me and pulled one from behind the glass and it scanned for 7.48, while labeled 39.99. :D
We need to find a Target employee who can run the entire games section a couple of times a week with their handheld computer system and report back as to what has dropped in price.

While I'm not an employee, I am one of the originators of the creation and scanning of barcodes. I usually go in 2/3 times a week to look around, see what's been sitting on the shelves and come up with a barcode list to look at prices.
When something like the HSG-3 and Blinx deals roll around, it's usually because someone stumbled upon them, since GH/PH games usually don't leave the 19.99 price point.
But if there are any games that you want checked, posts them with the UPC # (usually from Half.com or Tradestop.com), and I'll do my best to get them checked out.

I picked up the last copy of BloodRayne (Gamecube version) for $7.48 at my local Target (Greenbelt, MD). The clerk at the register did a double-take when the price range up and said he'd been looking for a game to buy. I'd originally stopped by to check on Primal, but I couldn't find any copies of that. :(

Not really amongt the best clearance deals out there, but Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is $19.99 at Target. Everyone else seems to have it for $30.
Same price for The Italian Job as well...both for Xbox.
I didn't check whether this applied for the PS2 versions. I hope this wasn't in the Sunday ad.

I did as this post suggested and made a list of games I might be interested in if the price was right and went and scanned them this morning.
Has anyone else tried to scan the barcodes for Shinobi and Mark of Kri?
The scanner recognized them both (at least what I got from half.com and typed into upcdatabase) as Sony software but said the price was $0.00!
The store did not have either of those games so I could not proceed further.
Has this happened to anyone else trying this?
BigDirty

When the price is scanned at $0.00, it has something to do with it no longer being stocked. What happens if there is an instance where the product in question is in stock, the proper thing to do (some employees won't bother doing this, saying that it can't be sold, or make a price up) is that they check for the last sold price, and then sell it to you at that, which is normally between $3.50 and $7.50 depending on the title and store.
Good luck with your Targét bargain hunting

it was the Target on Rt9 south in freehold. like i said it was marked as clearance even though it scanned at 19.99. the guy gave it to me for the clearance price since the tag was still there. i assume he took the tag out right after my sale.
if it is marked on clearance you should definitely be able to get it at that price no matter how it scans.

I was just wondering because the Targets in East Windsor, Princeton, Menlo Park, Burlington (NJ), and Oxford Valley (PA) didn't have them tagged at all.
However on a side note, the NHL 2003 (XBX) are all clearance tagged at 14.98 in Princeton, even though they are scanning at $19.99.

As was explained to me by a Target employee, if the item rings up at $0.00, then the item has been delisted and should have been sent back to warehouse. If the item is still in the store, in your hands for example, they have to sell it to you, but at the last price the item was listed at. The problem seems to be that only the hand scanners that employees have can find this listed price and they usually have to walk you to the register so they can tell the cashier since the cashier's register will show $0.00 as well. You can find some pretty good deals some of the time, but usually the last price is the clearance price as discussed on this website, ie. $7.48. I haven't ran across any great deals like games less than a dollar.

The Italian Job $19.99 Xbox
Not really a great deal, but I just wanted to ask a question about those S-Video cables. Is there some sort of recognition in the splitter that switches the device that's on?
I saw that all the plugs feed into just one A/V cable, so is that how that works? Or is there even enough slack in the console connectors to allow that?

You can have all ur systems plugged if thats what ur asking.. Although you can only use one at a time.. =P
Just one AV cable yes.. But theres little room to split.. Basicly... All ur sytems have to be pretty damn close to each other.. Or right on top of each other..

About the 0.00 thing: I went to my local Target (Tuscaloosa, AL) and scanned Gungrave (one was not in the glass case, 6 or 7 were) and it came up at 0.00. I asked the store clerk about it, he scanned it at the register, and it came up at 0.00 again. He told me that when this happens, it is salvage stock and is sold at 90% off of the last sale price. He told me that the last price they had for it was $12.99, so at 90% off, I was able to buy it for $1.29!! Ask about this at the Targets near you, you might be able to get a game cheaper than cheap. :D

There are some "scan-it-yourself" price check units in various places around the store. If the games are loose, grab a handful, walk over, and go scan-happy. If you are curious about prices of games locked behind the glass and do not want to ask an employee to scan each title once, do the UPC trick described in the first post and take your own printout of barcodes to these scanners and enjoy the funny looks people give you when you pull a sheet of paper loaded with barcodes out of your pocket.

And the question from the "uniformed security gaurd" about what you're doing. Be honest and they don't mind. It only happened to me once, and I do this multiple times a week, at multiple targets, so it's not too likely to happen to anyone else, except maybe minx. ;)

I got a 32 meg CF for $14.50.... (East Windsor) with similar deals on MS same size
be very careful to buy very old stock or very new on those Lexar cards, because according to the people Palm.com messageboards, the company temporarily switched its OEM supplier from Panasonic to SanDisk for a while--and SanDisk is notoriously bad.
Not only are SanDisk cards slow, but they have been widely reported hard resetting PDAs.
you cannot tell from the outside of the package which make of card you are getting, although once opened according to some people the following ways can distinguish the two Lexar cards
Panasonic have black print serial numbers and are made in Japan
SanDisk have white print serial numbers and are made in Taiwan
If you insert the card into a PDA, you can tell who made it by selecting "card info"

I picked up the last large "Duke" controller for Xbox at my local Target (Greenbelt, MD) yesterday for $15. I wasn't going to buy it, but they didn't have any of the reduced price smoke PS2 controllers I wanted and the Duke I did get was the last one there. (I haven't seen it anywhere else locally since they started phasing them out.)
I seem to recall Blockbuster having a $15 sale on them a few months ago, but my local stores were out of them when I went by. Well, I've got a spare now should anything happen to my original.

A previous post mentioned that when games scan at $0.00, they are supposed to be sold at 90% off of their last sale price. No such luck for me at my Target. When the following games scanned $0.00, the cashier got one of their handheld doofers and charged a price that it said.
Mad Maestro - $3.24
Haven - $3.24
Pride FC - $7.48
Amplitude - $7.48
Yup, Pride and Amp are now scanning $0.00 at my Target.
There was also a PlayStation FIFA World Cup game that scanned $0.00 and they wanted $6.50 for.
Darkstone (PlayStation) marked down 50% from $9.99 to $4.98.

Clearance stuff can be mixed in with the regular product, can be at the end of an aisle, or in with the unlocked "Value" games. Also sometimes game clearance can be found with books, music, and video, so check there as well. Many times the product goes unmarked, hence the barcode trick described early in the thread (for games under glass).

"My" deals are from a Target in Houston, TX area. "My" store has 4 or 5 copies of "My Street".
I believe what you said about Vexx. Every time I'm in Target, I check out the "value priced" section for new additions. A week or 2 ago I noticed that the 3 games I previously mentioned had been placed there with no pricing. I took them to a scanner (only checked Piglet in case it could be trade-in fodder) and didn't think the prices were anything special so didn't mention it.
Yesterday, things looked the same.
Today, they had red clearence stickers and I double checked with the scanner. There was an XBOX Vexx without a sticker that I checked and I think it was $15.

I was at my local Target today. They had one copy of Vexx (PS2) for $9.88, one copy of Virtua Fighter 4 for $9.88 and one copy of Unlimited Saga for $14.98. I already have VF4 and am not a big RPG fan, so I stashed Vexx in hopes it will drop to $4 this coming Monday. They also had 3 copies of Pride FC, each marked $29.99. I did a price check on one of them and it scanned $0.00. I then took it to the checkout, thinking that I would end up paying no more than a few bucks for the game. The cashier rang the game up and then typed in the price of $29.99. I politely turned it down, cause there was no chance in hell I was paying $30 for that game.

For the past few weeks Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (PS2) has been in a group of value priced games near the registers advertised as $16.99. Out of curiosity, I picked one up and it scanned at $9.99.
In response to the previous post, if you want Pride FC you should go back to the store and the next time it scans $0.00 have them check the price on one of the handheld doofers many of the associates carry around. The last I am aware is that they were $7.48 in that system but they may have fallen to the $3.24 mark by now.

There are 3 targets relatively near me. One recently remodeled, and has no deals (all the games in their value section are street price or higher). One had no clearance section whatsoever. The last one I checked had several copies each of 5 PS2 games. I don't remember all of them, but 2 were Maximo and Vexx. Both scanned at ~$14 as of Tuesday evening. Very upsetting. They did have a decent pair of $1.98 swim trunks, but I decided to pass.

Same difference ;), but anyway, different targets are on different price tiers. Instances I have come across including seeing games like Primal which went for 6.50 in Burlington go for 7.50 20 miles up the road in Princeton (Both NJ of course)
You also can see how there's some slight variances in pricing from store to store on the same product through this thread, and it usually is about a buck's difference.
And actually I came across it laying on a toy clearance end-cap, so who knows how long it was actually floating in the store, so I wouldn't go running to your target expecting it.
I also found some "misfit" games loose in the bottom of the display case that I'll check the pricing on tonight (and these are 1-2 year old titles).

Can games ever ring up cheaper at the register than the "scan it yourself" machines indicate? My local Target still hasn't done the latest 50% cut on Maximo, Virtua Fighter 4, Unlimited Saga (PS2) that many have found the past couple weeks; still $10, $10, and $14 here.

Nope.. they're all hooked into the same pricing system. My advice is that if you can regularly check back on mondays or tuesdays, do so, because from my observations it looks like there's a tier system that certain stores (which appear to be higher volume), have an extended period to go to "final clearance pricing". I've seen stuff be priced at $6.48 in Burlington that goes for $20.98 the same day in Princeton, but like the lead post says, your milage may vary.

Nightercaster 2 has the strange phenomenom in co-op where if you and your partners characters get too close together, they will fuse into a singular being which will not move an unstoppable four-armed beast with lead feet.
Avoid it until it drops well below 5 dollars.

It has been a while since I have scanned a self-made page of barcodes as described at the start of this thread, but I noticed some movement of games out of the locked case at my Target that may be a sign of things to come or may have only been to relieve some stress from the employees this weekend.
But, many PS2 games that had been labeled as $39.99 behind the glass, were now out and scanning $29.99 at the self-scan doofers. The ones I tested at my store were The Getaway and Dark Cloud 2...but there were a ton more that had been added to the "cheap" section this week.

Well, at least now I know who's been getting all those cheap ass games before I get there. I go to the one in Farmington on Grand River off 9 mile next to Gamestop and Kohl's but I haven't seen any clearance games there for a long while. You probably got there first again!!

I got the last copy of RE: Code Veronica at the Brighton Target for $4.98 last week. It was still marked $19.99 and was in the Greatest Hits endcap.
A couple other good unmarked deals are Ready 2 Rumble Boxing Round 2 at the Target in Livonia off on Haggerty near 8 Mile. It's unmarked, but if you find a worker with one of the big guns it'll come up at $2.35 or so. I got one of the last two copies about three weeks ago, so I don't know if the other is still there. And at the Wixom Target, there's a couple copies of Pride FC marked for $29.99, but it comes up for $7.48 on the big gun.
I rarely go to that Farmington Target though, bmulligan. My cousins live right near it, but I really don't venture much further than Haggerty. So you've got that Target all to yourself!

Devil May Cry 2

The scanning only allows you to check prices. The store must be equipped with a self-service UPC scanner. Only stores I know that use it are Target, KMart, Wal Mart, and TRU. It only assists you in checking the actual price when something is behind glass, so you don't have to hunt down a register jockey to unlock and tell you the price. Target is the biggest culprit for having items behind glass and mistagged/untagged.

I scanned the Zelda bonus disc at Toys R Us last week, and it came up to a ridiculous amount of like $59.99. It reminds me of the time I saw the SJRF/Sega GT 2002 Xbox bonus disc on sale separately at Best Buy for $99.99. I really doubt the store expects to sell too many of them.
Actually, I feel sorry for any consumers who are actually ignorant enough to pay that kind of money for it. Their money won't go very far if they spend it recklessly like this.

Funny side story - As I was walking to the scanner I had so many games in my hand an old man asked me if I worked there and asked me where to find "Finding Nemo"!

I was curious about the way employees seem to make up a sale price (last price in handheld, 90% off last price in handheld, etc.) whenever items scan $0.00 in the stores. So, out of curiosity, I asked if there was a company policy for this situation...not mentioning games directly. The answer, which appears to be that it is up to each individual store, follows in the reply I got:
Thank you for your e-mail regarding merchandise that is unsold after
markdowns.
Target is a trend retailer that wants to provide you the latest in
merchandise at the lowest possible prices. We will markdown items that have
been discontinued or are seasonal products in order to make room for new
products. Any merchandise that has not been sold after going through our
markdown and clearance process is considered salvage merchandise. Target
often donates salvage merchandise to local non-profit organizations, or
sells it to a salvage vendor. In the rare occasions where salvage
merchandise is still on the sales floor, the store is empowered on how to
handle this merchandise.
Event Sales is a national salvage company that purchases Target salvage
merchandise whenever a local non-profit organization is not available to
take the items we wish to donate. If you are interested in purchasing
salvage merchandise from Event Sales, please call: 612-781-1502.
I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. If you have any
further concerns regarding this matter, please contact Target Guest

Before you give up in frustration over not having a bargain bin at your local Target, remember that a lot of times the real bargains are behind the glass case anyway. It's an extra pain to get to them because you have to ask the register/supply jockey to get them out for you.
Just look for the reduced price items you've seen listed here behind the glass case at your local Target, and then ask one of the monkeys to get the game(s) you're interested in for you. A "bargain bin" per se is not necessary as long as your Target has the reduced price games in stock.

12-08-2003, 03:58 PM
My local Targets do not have a "bargain bin" per say. There is a section of "Greatest Hits" style games but that's it in the game section.
What you have to look for is the "Clearance" endcaps. Both of my local Targets have two that sometimes feature games. One is near the magazines and PC games, and then another on the far end of the healthcare aisles. There's like two endcaps of deoderant and then one marked clearance. The cheap games are usually piled up on the bottom shelf with some other stuff hanging on hooks above. I don't know why they make them so hard to find.

Lord Alfred, seriously. You think they want to put the crappy clearance endcap at like the front of the store. It's not like they're advertising their clearance stuff. This is a technique used by lazy employees to piss you off. Provided it isn't in the clearance bin next week, ask them to take it down for you to buy, after they scan it and ask for the money if the total they ask for is 50 bucks just tell em you dont want it. They cant really do anything to you about that.
