It was the only way to get my DS to connect but could turning that option off lead to problems?

Uhhh people may hack in and take all of your stuff on your computer and crap. But if your not in the city or in a place where wardrivers drive your good.

Basically this feature enables "stealth" mode, which means that your router will not respond to unsolicited packets coming in. This means you will be unpingable and anyone doing a port scans will not even see a computer at your IP.
