Microsoft's CES presentation also had revelations for current Xbox 360 owners. In an almost offhanded remark, Gates said that one of Capcom's most popular old-school arcade titles, Street Fighter 2, will be available via Xbox Live Marketplace later in the year. If poker is your game, it was also revealed that a new Texas-hold-'em-game will be available this year as well.

Capcom hypes SFII for Xbox 360

Capcom ports Turbo Hyper Fighting edition of arcade classic, attempts to duplicate arcade experience with new online mode.

In Bill Gates' keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show, the Microsoft founder and chief software architect casually mentioned that Street Fighter II would be coming to the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Marketplace. The impending arrival of Capcom's seminal fighting game classic piqued the interest of Street Fightin' men (and women) everywhere, but Gates' announcement immediately raised a number of questions. Would it be one of the upgraded iterations of the game instead of the original? Would it be playable online over Xbox Live? Would it cost an arm and a leg? Some of those questions received answers today, and they are "yes," "yes," and "maybe."

While no price tag was announced, Capcom has confirmed that Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting (known in the arcades as Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting) will become available over the Xbox Live Marketplace, with a number of new features (including online play) sometime in early 2006. In addition to the Xbox Live standard Quick Match and Optimatch, Hyper Fighting will also include a new Quarter Match option.

Intended to replicate the arcade experience, Quarter Matches will let two players duke it out while a group of spectators wait for their own chance to dethrone the reigning champ--similar to the online mode of the Xbox 360's only fighting game so far, Dead or Alive 4. Just as in the arcades, on-lookers will be able to watch the brawls while they wait their turn, trash-talking the fighters or discussing strategy. Players' "quarters" will be used to represent their spot in line.

Before entering a Quarter Match, players will be able to choose ranked or unranked matches to determine whether or not stats will be tracked for the Xbox Live leaderboards. Beyond the somewhat common all-time and monthly leaderboards, Hyper Fighting will also include rankings broken down by character, as well as a board for the most consecutive wins.

Capcom is also promising more than 10 online and offline achievements to reward players for meeting certain tasks, and a "feature-limited" demo version will allow gamers to play single matches with two playable characters

I Hope its not JUST plain ol SF2 and they give us the rest of the add ones, even if its seperate downloads at least. SF2 is hella broken. But meh, that and Texas HM are good enough. Kudos 360.

Forgive my XBox 360 ignorance, but does that mean you will be able to play against others online or does that only mean you can download it via live?

you can get points from retail stores 20bucks will get you 1600 points in most store, or you can buy them off xbox live marketplace, 25 will get you 2000 point, but no tax online i belive.

Outstanding, keep the great games coming to the marketplace. I've never been a street fighter fan but for 4-5 bucks you can't go wrong for a game with online play and xbl leaderboards. I'm really looking forward to the poker game as well since half my time is spent a full tilt poker.

I'm jazzed about the Texas Hold'em, but I'm indifferent about Street Fighter. As much of a Street Fighter fan as I am, I'm still aware of how unresponsive the original Street Fighter is -- it did not age well in the least bit...

Anyone want to guess how many points SF2's gonna cost? I'd say 1600 at least.

As for Poker; meh, I already have spades, maybe if they let you gamble MS points :D

QFT. I don't see why they haven't rereleased Street Fighter yet. It hasn't been put out on any system, console or PC, since the Turbo Grafx CD (y'know, that lumbering hunk of shit that only alonzomoruning owns; though, to be sure, with the right system card it can play the highly sexual Akumajou Dracula: Chi no Rondo) in 198fucking8.

For a pop music-feuled time duration explanation, I present wikipedia's "1988 in music" page; this will give you an indication of how long ago Fighting Street was released:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_in_music

Because the original SF is one of the worst game ever made. In fact it is so bad it made the news. Thats why Capcom try to market the seres as "Street Fighter 2" and try to hide SF under a rug.

It would be intersting if they allow gambling of MS points in Texas Holdem. Sure it wont happen but it would sure make things intersting...

Profit derived from nostalgia is not contingent upon "good" or "fun." (see: Taito Memorites, Tecmo Classics, the numerous handheld TV game things, etc.). Sure, it wasn't SF2, but it also wasn't Karate Champ either. At the time, it was incredible.

EDIT: It was so bad it made the news? Tell me more!

They wouldn't be able to because the microsoft points cost money and therefore it would be like gambling real money.

Karate Champ is STILL awesome. If you have two players who know what they are doing and don't play cheap, it rules.

I have a feeling that by springtime, regardless of how many games are running (or running smoothly...completely different category in this case) MS updates to backwards compatibility will dry up quicker than....oh, I dunno...*insert tasteless line about a specific body part of Marilyn Monroe post-death*

I threw a hadoken once in Fighting Street! those were the glory days. mmm 1988...I seem to remember having my 7 year old brain warped by my brother's copy of Nothing's Shocking and arguing with my friends about what the G n' R song "I used to love her but had to kill her" was about...(axl's dog, right?)

God that's a great CD - can you believe it's almost 20 years old?

They should just get all versions of SF2, SFIII and SFA working as one DL if possible.

I don't know why it takes them so long to put up some damn games. I have around 4,000 live points just sitting here because there's nothing I'm interested in except Gauntlet, and Smash TV. No way am I paying for lame ass "gamer pictures." Give me some Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipied, a pinball game, some slot machines or better yet a full casino game, Metal Slug, Dig-Dug, Rampage, Hydro Thunder, Burger Time, San Fransisco Rush, Vector-Mna, THPS 1 & 2, ect.

I think the live arcade thing is awesome and full of potential. I love the thought having a bunch of games just right there on my hard-drive to play without getting up and changing discs. I just Microsoft gets it going, because I know when the Revolution comes out it's going to be pretty hard to compete with their enitre game library from NES to Gamecube. Like Cheapyd said in a past CAGcast, I would really like to see a Gametap type thing going on for the Xbox Live Marketplace.

it's cool and all...but no matter how many features they pump into it, it's still riding on the nostalgia factor.

now if alpha 3, or thrid strike were on the live arcade-- then we'd be talking.

Those quarter matches sound sick. Hopefully they will set a limit on people in an "arcade" at the same time or you might be waiting forever to play...

Third Strike would be awesome - I never really got into it in the arcades (mainly because arcades were almost dead when it came out).
