Direct TV and Microsoft announced plans to bring digital TV to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system.

Direct TV announced plans to make their digital television available on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, as well as on PCs running windows.

Not only will this help turn simple PCs into DVRs, but this also takes the Xbox360 one step closer towards total entertainment ownage.

With support for the Apple iPod and other portable sound devices, HDTV support, and oh yeah, it can play videogames too, the Xbox360 is really jumping ahead as a simplified media center in and of itself.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this.

Um...I dunno either. If you have an HDTV and Have DirectTV why would you need to hook up your DirectTv to your XBOX as well? Unless they have some sort of unannounced functionality.

If it functions as a DVR, I'll do this. If not, I'll stick to running DirecTV through my my TV....directly.

Are their any updates about this?

maybe they mean you could access direcTV programming through the 360 and a sattelite dish instead of having those direcTV boxes, and the DVR functions?

Would one still have to pay for the Directtv service I assume. Why not just get a two room set-up from them for $40 a month instead.

I am interested as well. Will this just act as a receiver? Will you be able to get HDTV as well. What happens if you xbox crashes (as mine just did)...I assume I wouldn't have TV or Xbox then. Also, is there any advantage to not just getting a Direct TV box? 20GB isn't enough to record many shows on. I have a 160GB replay TV, so it doesn't seem that there will be any advantage except being able to quickly switch between games and TV. What are peoples opinions?

The big issue with doing DVR on the 360 is disk space. HD content takes about 6-10GB of space per hour, regular content takes about 1-3GB/hr, so the 20GB drive would disappear quickly. If they brought out a 100GB or something bigger than the 20GB drive, then that seems a little more possible.

i'm interested in buying a tv tuner, but this kinda sounds like it might be a tv tuner especially made for directv. i'm not sure if should wait for this or to just buy a tv tuner right now. I have directv and i heard most tv tuners dont work as well with satellite.

This seems like it would bring on more disadvantages than advantages IMO. Don't they typically give you a DirectTv reciever for free when you sign up anyways?

wishful thinking on my part... but i think it'll probably be a usb tuner with a card slot... possibly with a new option under the media blade. the tuner will just bring in the dtv signal, and the 360 will handle all decoding...

my guess is just a Direct TV usb tuner card, and then if you want DVR you must have a media center PC

I dont know if you guys read the OXM rumor mole section this month, but they talk about this deal. The rumor is that a Black X360 with 250GB HDD and DirectTV and Tivo like capabilities is in the works and will be sold for about $600

it doesn't really seperate the market. So it has tivo functions, does that change the way a developer will make a game for it? The added features don't appear to change the way a developer will make a game for it. It sounds more like the psx

Oh yeah, it did mention HDMI.

EDIT: Here's the OXM article exactly word by word:

Remember that XBOX LIVE/DirecTV deal from way back? Picture a $600 jet-black XBOX 360 with a built-in HD-DVD drive, an HDMI A/V port, a 250GB hard drive, and TiVo-like PVR functionality. Will it happen? So says one of the Mole's trusted sources.
