OK, so I've been playing Kessen II recently and really enjoying it. So much fun to plan and execute huge battles with badass generals.

So should I pick up any of the Dynasty Warriors games, I see that they get mixed reviews...

If so, which ones are the best?

I only own Dynasty Warriors 4, but supposedly it hit its peak at Dynasty Warriors 3.

I'd go with either DW5 or DW3. DW4 isn't as good, and DW PSP is garbage.

If you only get one, or you're stupid like me and get way too much enjoyment from it, Dynasty Warriors is a great series. It can become a bit repetitive, but I personally love the setting and story to it, so it never gets old. As of DW5, I wanna say there's 50 characters to play as. Personally, I'd get either DW5 or DW4. They feature vastly different systems as far as items and some other things such as weapons are concerned, though the core gameplay is the same. I'd suggest looking on Gamefaqs to see what the exact details about the differences are between the two as I haven't played DW4 in awhile since my friend bought that one.

*Is someone who owns DW3 and DW5 while my friend bought DW4...We're suckers for Dynasty Warriors*

Yeah Karsh, well I love the story to Kessen and I thought it was cool how the characters are named after real historical figures, so I figured I'd check this out. Thanks for the opinions guys, I guess I'll go for the "Xtreme legends" versions unless anyone warns me otherwise.

I'd look into Xtreme Legends first. If I remember correctly, they don't allow you to actually play through the Musou (story) mode of all the characters. Only any new characters added. XL is extremely limiting. If I remember correctly, they're more like expansion packs than stand-alone games. I'd go with DW5 if you can find it cheap.

NOOOOOOOOOO EXTREME LEGENDS!!!

essentially, they're expansion packs. you NEED to have the original dynasty warriors to play extreme legend's free mode or musuo mode (the 2 main modes of the game)

I say go with 3 or 4 just because they're cheaper than 5

PS: No Extreme Legends

4 was icky.
3 and 5 are awesome. I really like the advancements made for 5.
I own 3, 3 Xtreme, 4 Xtreme, and 5. I'm hoping on getting 5 Xtreme soon.
I love playing co-op.

All the DW games are for the most part the same. Although if you really liked Kessen The Three Kingdoms might be a bit more your style.

Thanks dude, you saved me some cash. It's so confusing - I thought it was like the diff between SSX and SSX tricky. Dang - these guys are milking the franchise more then Madden.

Three Kingdoms

Thanks for the suggestion, it looks great, but I have banned myself from playing those type of games. The last one I played was "Zeus", but I can't go back to that "play 'till 3AM then goto work at 7" routine again.

How is Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires? (different than Dynasty Warriors 4) I hear it adds a little strategy to the mix.

Yeah I'm def gonna pick up Kessen III. However I don't know about Kessen I, I hate going backwards in a series.

I own Empires and its my favorite in the series. The way the game works is that the map of China is divided up in smaller regions....and you can choose to play historical or fictional settings. You can choose to attack regions and other regions will attack you.

The only gripe against it is that the computer seems to grow stronger far faster than you unless you attack every turn....and it's not as much strategy as one would realize. But if you like the gameplay you'll get a kick out of it.
