I don't remember whether it was ever addressed in the cartoons, but in the one toy the trailer becomes a mobile fighting rig. It splits in half length-wise revealing a rocket launcher and some laser/machine gun rig Optimus uses. Something to that effect anyway.

Each TF has its own sub-space where trailers, guns, and miscellanous accessories would disappear to. In addition, you have the mass-shifting such as Megatron turning into a gun and soundwave turning into a cassette player, which is equally bizarre.

I know theres a site out there that explains it. It has to do with the space ship that brought the autobots and decepticons to earth changing them when they were all trashed upon landing. Hence why the transformers from cybertron when they change do not change size. I know, im a geek.
