Report: Revolution hitting North America by Thanksgiving

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata tells Japanese newspaper the next-gen console will be in US homes for the holidays.

To date, Nintendo has been rather stingy with details about its next-generation console, the Revolution. So far, the Kyoto-based game giant has only unveiled a mock-up of the console and its new controller. It has also vaguely mentioned that several of its popular franchises, such as Super Smash Bros. and Metroid Prime, are going next gen.

Given the lack of information, speculation has mounted that the Revolution may not actually launch until 2007. Today, though, the company's head man debunked all rumors, stating that the console will make it in time for Christmas 2006. He also revealed that America will be getting the console first, so that it will make it in time to stores for Thanksgiving.

In an interview featured in today's edition of Japanese newspaper Sankei Shinbun, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated, "We can't disclose the Revolution's release period yet, but we have no plans to miss out on the year-end sales battle. As for North America, we need to release it by Thanksgiving, or otherwise we won't receive support from the retail industry. So the Revolution will be released prior to that period."

Iwata avoided any specific comments about how much the Revolution would cost. However, he reiterated that the console will be reasonably priced. "The amount of money that people are willing to spend on videogames is getting less every year," he said. "Even if it's a superb machine, it's not going to sell if it's 50,000 yen ($434). We plan to make [the Revolution] an affordable price."

To date, Nintendo has never released a console above the price of 25,000 yen ($217) in Japan. Iwata also told the Sankei Shinbun that a working model close to the final form factor of the Revolution will be shown at E3 in May.

Awesome, that's not too far away, plus E3 coming up as well. I think I'll preorder this online, I really don't want to deal with launch day madness anymore.

While it's nice to know a date, I really thought this would be coming out sooner. This begs the question, "So when is Twilight Princess" actually coming out?"

One positive thing is that my wife will now have an easy idea for a Christmas present for me next year.

yeah... i kind of hoped it would be sooner but im almost possitive it is now going to be a revolution launch title. which is cool because it will make the revolution sell like crazy. which is what i think nintendo has in mind.

To me this makes it more certain Twilight Princess won't be out with the Revolution. If the Rev was out in May, then it would make sense. But they're not going to delay Zelda for an entire year (since it was originally due out last November).

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt, guys. Twilight Princess has nothing to do with the Rev, and this only confirms it.

of course they wouldn't delay a game just to delay a game "hey lets delay this game just because we want it out on the revolution". but if they already decided to make it a revolution launch title then this gives them a lot more time to spend working on it. sure it would piss some people off but think about the fact that there is an official word on the revolution and there is still not one word about twilight princess. not even an estimate of when it might come out.

I hope they update the graphics if it's ported over to the Revolution. As of right now, the graphics look good, but I think "the graphics need to be tightened up!"

I really can't wait to see what Nintendo has in store for us. I can't wait to see what they do with the DS and the Revolution combo. I guess I really should try to put a hurt on my backlog now.

Even as a sony fanboy I might have to get revolution over PS3 if it's significantly cheaper (at least 200).

I'm surprised no one is paying attention to what I think is the most amazing part of that announcement. We get a Nintendo console before Japan?

Hopefully there will be some nice CAG deals to preorder the system or the games if this is true.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo pushed back the Revolution launch until 2007... this is Nintendo after all (remember Ultra 64?)... The Twighlight Princess delay just came out of nowhere when they announced it... that was a huge financial disaster because it was their last chance to push Gamecube sales. Now the system is dead, even more so then it was.

So obviously Nintendo won't push a product (i.e. Revolution) if it's not ready, even if it comes at the expense of potential revenue or increased marketshare... I guess we'll find out more at E3

Wow, thank you Iwata for confirming what we all assumed anyway. Until an actual date is announced, this isn't really news.

you might as well count the PS3 out for 2006 if this is true... i doubt the market could handle 2 systems hitting at one time... (then again didnt the Gamecube and xbox hit within months of each other)

Anyone remember the prices of the Xbox and gamecube and release dates

I think the PS3 would be a hard sell if it came out in a month of the nintendo system

at these prices

Nintendo 200 bucks
PS3 400 to 500 bucks

it would be a hard sell for the ps3, with the ps2 still showing major power in what type of games it can play, it would be very hard for me to hand over 500 bucks when i can get the next Nintendo system for 200

That's what I noticed. Atleast this should debunk the "360 did shitty in Japan because it came out first in US" theory some people like to use.

The Xbox and GameCube actually came out the same week here in America.

Xbox November 15, 2001 $299
Gamecube November 18, 2001 $199

Nintendo has come out and said that it's still due for release on the gamecube this year.

The DS came out here a month before it did in Japan, did it not?

Nintendo needs to give more info besides the extremes of the price and release date. Under $300 and before Thanksgiving aren't too specific. Hell, they only say that they need to get it out by Thanksgiving. Still good news though.

I just have a sneaking feeling I am going to walk into a store some random day and the door greeter will say "would you like to buy a revolution?" Seriously all I want to know is the launch day, money is no object......actually money under $200-$300 is no object otherwise I wouldn't be on this site:lol:

This "before Thanksgiving" timeframe is essentially non-news. Personally, I hope it comes well before Thanksgiving, but I was expected a Sept-Nov launch time in the US. As for it hitting the US first...well, there may be a reason that Gamespot is the only site reporting that detail. Next-Generation, 1up, and Kotaku all neglected to report any details about it hitting the US shores first. It could be possible that it hits in the US and Japan at nearly the same time, as with the N64, Cube, and DS (with the DS hitting here first, and the other two having short waiting periods between the JP and US launches).

Some people would be wrong. The current best selling console in Japan week over week is the DS, which hit the US shores 1 week earlier than Japan.
