View Full Version : Should I buy a DS?

I got on offer for a used, but in excellent condition DS w/ Castlevania: DoS for $120. I've been contemplating for the past 2 days on whether or not to jump on it? The main games I want are Castlevania and Mario Kart, so once I get that, then it's $150 for 2 games. I'd also want to eventually pick up Kirby, Meteos, and Mario 64. So that'd divide up to about $40 for each of the 5 games. So for those who have DS's, are they really that good? They look good, but after a couple months will I hardly ever pick it up again? Any feedback would be nice, since I'm very indecisive about this.

The DS rocks. I use it more than my consoles.
That's an alright deal I suppose. Since it's used I'd try to talk him down less considering DS retails for $130 and you're buying both a used DS and used game.

The first year I had a DS (owned one since launch) I didn't play it at all. Now that games like Mario Kart DS are out, I play mine all the time. If you see interesting games on the horizon, get one.

Go for it. I actually just finished up Castlevania DS last night and its easily one of my all time favorites (I'd say its better than the GBA offerings and on par w/SOTN). Also, it has quite a bit of replay value because you can go back and collect all of the souls (if you really want to) and you can also unlock a mode to play as (another character......its not really a spoiler but you can figure it out on your own ;) ). Good stuff.
All of the games you mentioned are pretty great too. Mario Kart is amazing and once you finish single player, the online mode is pretty excellent. Kirby is quite good, Meteos is addicting, and Mario 64 is fun to play through again simply because of the 3 new characters.
At this time last year, the DS's outlook was pretty bleak. But nowadays, there's AAA titles coming out every few weeks (and if there aren't, look into imports like Jump SuperStars or Daigasso Band Brothers!) and its getting hard to keep up!
I HIGHLY recommend you bite on that offer. Just make sure the DS is scratch-free and test the touch screen for yourself.

I bought one last October and I've loved it. No complaints here. Trauma Center was my first game and I couldn't put it down. Currently I own about 7 or 8 DS games (AW, Castlevania, Meteos, Mario & Luigi, Phoenix Wright, Mario 64, Sonic Rush, Mario Kart, and Animal Crossing). I'll be picking up Mario Brothers DS, and one of those brain teaser games. I think the DS will be hitting it's stride this year. Go for it.

I would say look at the DS games out right now. If there are 5 games that are must haves to YOU that you can't possibly play any other way, then yes, get it. If not then don't.

i love the DS because you can just pick up and play for a few minutes and then put it back down... it's not of much a time commitment as the home consoles.

5 Reasons the DS is worth buying:
1) Mario Kart DS
2) Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
3) Animal Crossing DS
4) Castlevania: DoS (which I don't own, and might not buy)
5) Zelda, Mario, and Metroid on the horizon
and 6) Its only 130 dollars, and you can use the Best Buy coupon a few times before 1/31/06 to get some of the above games for 10 bucks cheaper, each.

I love my DS. I play it all the time!! I love playing GBA games on it as well. You'll love the DS once you own it, trust me.

I want a DS too, but I am hoping for a redesign, or some pearl/white shades.

Yes, it's worth it. Phoenix Wright alone was worth the price of the system for me. Castlevania is great, too. Between my DS and PSP, I never even touch my home consoles anymore.

I love my DS. You will not regret it. Great DS games and a backlog of GBA games that can't be beat. Go for it.

I got it for Nintendogs cus I crave for new gaming experience, and with Castlevania, Mario Kart and Meteos, I fell in love with my DS more and more. If new gaming expereince is what you are looking for, you can't go wrong with a DS. Now if only I can get Animal Crossing... ;P

thanks for all the advise. I got my DS today. Can't wait to get started on some Castlevania.
Oh, a couple quick questions though:
I found out that you can toggle the backlight on and off from the main DS loading menu. But is there any way that you can toggle it in mid-game (or a way to temporarily bring the main menu back up?
Also I heard that direct sunlight isn't good for LCD screens. anyone know anything about this, and just how paranoid I should be, or is it really no big deal? Thanks.

no toggling the light in mis game. you might is well leave it on. in my opinion u cant see crap with out it. it also makes the color look better.
