View Full Version : A good idea for a DS Zelda, IMO

I know Four Swords DS is a sure thing, and it will be good, so I won't touch that (no pun intended), but recently I've been playing my Zelda Collector's Edition GC disc (OoT, mostly) and I've come to the conclusion that the N64 Zelda's wouldnt work very well on DS. They would push the system very hard, but more importantly, the perspective of the game and the size of the screen just seem to me as though they would make the game hard to play.

So how about this. Take the top down perspective from LTTP, GBA Zeldas, Minish Cap, and even the original...but make it 3D. Like Animal Crossing's engine, only more overhead as opposed to 3/4, and then make the gameplay more like LTTP than Ocarina. I think this would work a lot better, would allow for a lot of monsters on screen at once and stuff, and would even make touch screen functionality easier to integrate. For example, there could be touch boomerang, where you draw the path you want the boomerang to follow, and then throw it to hopefully hit multiple enemies...same with bow and arrow, only maybe you have to draw a line away from your opponents (and starting on your own head, like drawing back a bow string) then draw the line sharply towards a foe...

This kind of stuff just wouldn't work with Ocarina of Time or a similar game.

Anyways, whatcha all think.

Now that I think about it, I really like my touch boomerang idea. Mwahahah...me so smart.

That would be cool. I really liked Sonic's 2D gameplay with 3D graphics in Sonic Rush on the DS, and the new Mario Bros. looks amazing using similar concepts. Why not Zelda? I wouldn't hold my breath, but I'd imagine we might see a graphical setup like that.

I have an idea. A entire game of JUST sneaking into the castle!

Or how about no more remakes, even if it is of a great game...okay who am I kidding. Ocarina remade would be sweet. Even if they drop the graphics a bit, I'd like to see it faithfully remade.

Personally I don't like to switch between buttons and the stylus. It's just clunky and gets in the way of enjoying the game. So I don't really like the stylus as a boomerang guide idea. I do think the 3d models with over head view gameplay sounds pretty sweet though...sort of like a baldur's gate dark alliance type deal.

That's a cool idea

I like this: Maybe the overworld would take place as you suggest on the bottom screen, but the dungeons and caves are played on the top screen with a more 2-d overhead view like the original Legend of Zelda (but with killer graphics) and the bottom screen switches into a map and status screen. This would make the game sort of like a game and watch.

I think that could work. I've often played Animal Crossing and thought about a new Zelda more along the lines of ALTTP (my favorite) but with those graphics...

How about a Metroid like this?

They need to make an entirely new top down 2D Zelda with an entirely new tile set with about 18-20 crazy dungeons and a massive overworld.

And make it online with Customizable Link-like characters. And some of the dungeons you need to enlist the help of other "Online Link-like people". And the idea of the game is rescuing Prince Link from Ganon under the request of Princess Zelda.

I thought it was confirmed that the Zelda for the DS was a new adventure... and it's not Four Swords (which would rock with Wi-Fi play, BTW). But I like your idea, it would be possible. It wouldn't allow for some of the mesmerizing scenes we're used to in console Zeldas (ie, Hyrule field of OoT, Hyrule Castle in WW, etc.) but it would definitely work.

I think there are technically two planned DS Zeldas, and one of them is an evolution of the Four Swords concept.

I honestly don't care what they do, I just want Zelda on my DS. Well... I guess I care to some extent. So long as they don't make it suck (like Zelda II) I will be happy.

What I really want is a brand new, top-down 2D Zelda, but just about anything will suffice for me.

i dont like to switch either. and to be honest, i dont really like to use the stylus control in animal crossing. i think they should just use the buttons for this one. the stylus is great for games like meteos and kirby, but i think zelda is much more suited for the buttons.

Four swords is so played out. The DS needs a real Zelda game (I really think we'll be getting an all new adventure) and in addition I for see ports of the N64 games coming out towards the end of the DS' life.

Me too... Minish Cap and Oracle of Seasons/Ages were great and I loved them but they didn't really satisfy me like Link's Awakening or LttP did. And I doubt we'll be seeing a new 2D Zelda anytime soon since it's only been a year since Minish Cap.

I just learned to play all the time with the stylus in AC. It's a real time saver once you get the hang of it, let me tell you.

I'd take a new 2D Zelda adventure. Minish Cap was over way too quickly. (Two days of playing!)
