Sure, most times the selection sucks, and the selection will vary from library to library but it beats the hell out of PAYING a few bucks to a rental store.

not too many people know about this, and they almost NEVER have new releases, some libraries get the movies donated, some just buy them from the budget.

The library near my grandparent's house in Newark is great! They have a huge selection of DVDs, stuff like Fight Club, LOTR, it's unbelievable. They have an even wider selection of VHS, but who cares about that.

there's cheap and then there's sad. Does anyone listen to Loveline when Adam makes fun of his day because when ada was a kid his 45 year old dad would rent records from the library?

I disagree. What's sad about borrowing a DVD from the library? Free beats cheap every time. It's not sad to take a book out from the library rather than paying $20 for it at Barnes and Noble, is it? For me, if it's something I want to watch more than once, like LotR:RotK, I'll buy it. But the majority of movies I'll watch once and that's it. If I can watch it that one time free of charge, I'm happy.

hell yeah! i do it all the time. although our library's selection is somewhat limited, they can get pretty much whatever i want from anohter library for me. and the best part is i can put them on hold from my home comp. then just go pick them up when they come in. the only downside is that new arrivals usually take a long time because there are a lot of holds on them already.

back in the early 90s the only place that had a copy of star wars was the library. I must have borrowed that thing like 10 times. All free. It was great. Also you can get cds from the library. It's a great way to burn cds from the 80's with out having to download the music.

I think anyone who donates to a library is a great person.

Our local library has a selection that is pretty competative with local rental places...except they only usually have 1 copy of each movie. But everything can be put into a hold queue online, and there are no late fees. The only prob is the chances of getting a ravaged DVD increases

At the local library they charge a dollar to rent a DVD. I always reserve new releases and get them for 5 days for a buck. Also I like that you can rent box sets from them for a dollar I rent the Sopranos box set instead of buying them.

I think $1 is a fair price. It can give the libraries some money to buy new books and DVDs.

The libraries in my area charge for rentals. The prices range; it's almost always $1 or $2, though. It's still a bargain, and allows them to get in new materials more often. Great for those of us that like to read. :D

Now music from libraries is where it's at. Most of the libraries in my area manage to get new CDs when they're still (relatively) recent. Check out the CD, burn a copy...and voila! A brand new CD, and the RIAA won't complain because they don't know that you've done it!

Yes, borrowing and burning music is illegal. Until the RIAA stops filing idiotic lawsuits and trying to control every policy that the FCC makes (like trying to copy-protect digital radio (http://www.mindjack.com/feature/digitalradio.html)), though, I don't have any moral qualms with it whatsoever.

About 60 VHS tapes. I won an auction for a storage unit, and there was about 100 tapes in it.

My library only has a handful of DVD's, and they are mostly educational. It's ok though since I can rent any new DVD or game for a buck from my local video rental store.

I wish my librar did that. It has good DVD's though; but most the time, all the good ones are gone.

The Austin library(s) has a sweet selection. If theres something you can't find, chances are it's at another branch, with they can just transfer from. I got Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The French Connection, Black Hawk Down, and Donnie Darko in one trip once!

My local libraries charge a few dollars to rent DVDs, and they have an ok selection, but all they seem to have is fullscreen versions of movies.
