DALLAS - The "Star Trek" series, now relegated to video rentals and television reruns, plans to beam up some new video games later this year.

In an exclusive licensing deal announced this week with CBS Corp.'s CBS Communications Group, Bethesda Softworks LLC will publish Trek games for consoles, handheld systems and personal computers. Terms weren't disclosed.

Rockville, Md.-based Bethesda's first title will be "Star Trek: Legacy," where gamers can orchestrate space battles as a Starfleet admiral. A second game for handheld systems will let players control either Federation or Klingon forces.

Both are scheduled for release in September to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the franchise that introduced pointy-eared Vulcans and photon torpedoes.

It's been a rough time lately for the venerable sci-fi series, which hasn't had a new show since the "Star Trek: Enterprise" was canceled last year.

It's "Bethesda".

I was never into Star Trek, but I won't doubt they do an excellent job adapting the license into a quality game.

This could be really cool , or end up like Pirates of the Caribbean .
Let's hope it's not a texture swapped Seadogs 3 . JK .
Oh yeah , it's Bethesda .

I'm cautiously excited about this announcement. I love Morrowind (one of my favorite games ever), and taking something similar to this in the Star Trek universe could be awesome.

And, even as bad as Pirates of the Carribean was, it still had some alright portions. The sea fights weren't terrible. They needed work, but there was something there. I think if they made a sequal to it, it could be a great game (remember, the first few Grand Theft Autos weren't great, it's as it made it to GTAIII that Rockstar put everything together).

So, we'll see, but let's hope for the best.

I wonder if Star Trek: Legacy is going to be an RTS or something more along the lines of Starfleet Command.
From the pictures I've seen of Legacy the ship models are from Star Trek: Armada II, which I'm assuming means they’re just placeholders, since the developer from Armada II is working on Legacy.

I'm still waiting on the Fallout 3 they promised me.

IMHO a Star Trek game would only be cool if it was done in Morrowind style...i.e., I'd want to spend all my time sneaking into the crew's quarters and stealing all their possessions.
