I never have owned a PS2 and now trying to figure out rather to buy a used one now or what till ps3 comes out. But have seen about Devil May Cry 3 and looking at screen shots if you could what kinda game does it compare to, from screenshots I would say a shoot em up/action version of an adventure type game like Tombraider/Prince of Persia series. And seeing that it is a 20 dollar new game now along with some other games I will have a back catalog ps2 only games to catch on

It plays nothing like tomb raider. It's more like Ninja Gaiden.

Ninja gaiden with more emphasis on combos and ridiculousness, more cheesy attitude and customization. it's kinda fast and you carry 2 guns and 2 melee weapons at once, which you can switch mid-combo.
it's basically an action-adventure game where you roll from one battle to the next, with some resident evil-style puzzle solving to break it up. and ridiculous cut-scenes.

I really love the combat system, you can fluidly move from one melee weapon to the other mid-combo, often mid-air, should the situation arise. Any game which features a demonic, electric guitar as a weapon is ok in my book.

Well I broke down and bought a PS2 knowing the ps3 is coming, but I bought an old one so I can do the Harddrive/Network card stuff:-# ;) Anyway I understand why Devil May Cry 3 is hard to discribe, because if you say it is a hack adn slash you do it an injustice by lumping with mostly boring hack and slash genre, the styles and the fact it doesn't seem to be as easy as a normal hack/slash game. It is just PURE FUN, after this and how incredible Soul Calibur 3 looks on teh Old ps2 hardware I was telling a friend that I wish I bought a Ps2 back in the day, if Sony would make this last years games be the quality visually of SC 3, they could handle their own against Xbox 360 for the Graphics Ho people.
