View Full Version : Are there any games (DS or GB) that DON'T let you completely erase the save data?

I always want a fresh start when I play a cartridge-based game. When I get one used, the first thing I do is to erase all the data from the previous owner. But in another thread someone warned a fellow CAG about buying a certain game used, because that particular game would not allow you to reset any of the unlocked content! That got me a little nervous. So what games are out there that won't let you reset the cartridge data? This is the type of thing that any prospective buyer should be aware of before buying a game used.

I wasn't aware that there were any. Usually they have some kind of convaluded buttons to press and hold on boot. I usually check GameFAQs if it's not blantantly obvious or in the manual.

That was Riviera that was discussed, which apparently does not have a mechanism for "relocking" content that had been unlocked.

I also believe Phoenix Wright for DS does not have that option either. But the only 'unlockable' content is stages 4 and 5, which isn't that big a deal.

IIRC, the manual has a button combo to press on the menu that will reset the game. I'm at work, but will check when I get home.

I don't have riviera and have never played it, but would turning off the power or removing the cart while saving delete the saved info?

If it doesn't screw up your hardware, that might work. It might not ever save again though.

Oh, all this time I thought that warning was for preventing data loss. I remember some of the old NES games had a similar warning. One time I repeatedly presessed reset (this is one the things it also warns you not to do) and it erased all the data. I think it was a zelda gold cart.

From the PW manual:
RESETTING SAVE DATA
Hold down the B and R buttons at the same time when starting
up the game to reset all save data. Be careful: Save data will be
erased and cannot be restored.
