Have any of you guys seen the series, Firefly? I'm trying to decide whether to pick up 24 or this? I like sci-fi a lot - so that's my lean - but I'm not into the new (or even old) Star Treks and definitely not a Buffy fan.. noticed it's the same creator. Personally I can't stand Buffy/Charmed or many TV series in general. I did like seasons 1-3 of Smallville because it seemed to be a more thoughtful series with a more serious approach and good visuals.

I'm not special effects nut (more of into the stories) BUT bad TV fx just ruin series for me. I just watched The Stand the other day.. UGH... some of the CG is just garbage.

So anyway, is Firefly a cheesy series like Angel with middling TV special effects and soap opera stars? I heard good things from a co-worker and want to solicit 'your alls' opionions....

I happened to love Buffy and Angel, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

What part of the Buffy/Angel did you not enjoy? (I am unfamiliar with charmed)

In my opinion, Firefly is an excellent show, a great mixture of space-western with some great dialog, and some really memorable characters. One of the more original shows to air in the past few years.

the TV box set is 4 disks, 13? episodes, FOX pulled the plug before it was complete, so the box includes a few unaired episodes.

Disks 1-3 are top notch, but disk 4 felt a little "off". Perhaps it was merely the fact that it should have gone on to having a few more episodes. (13<22)

There are numerous plot lines started, but not all of them get resolved. I feel that the show would have been excellent in its second season, as well as its third.

Each episode is pretty much stand alone, however there are larger arcs that you catch a few minutes of each ep.

The show occasionally airs on Scifi, you could try to watch a few episodes on there.

Serenity is a little bit of a bittersweet sendoff/followup to the series.
the only movie I saw in the theatre last summer more than once.

i like firefly, a lot. it has snappy writing and the actors really support eachother well. that said, its not the greatest scifi show ever or anything, but its certainly entertaining and worth buying the dvd set especially now that you can find it under 25 bucks.

I was shocked by how much I liked Firefly. Probably one of the best shows I have ever seen. I never saw it till it was on DVD, tho.

BTW, why are you CAGs not using Netflix? There are tons of things on DVD I want to watch but there's no way I could afford buying or renting all of them. If I really like something, I'll buy it after I get it on Netflix, like Firefly.

I haven't seen Serenity yet, it's coming up soon on my Netflix Q tho. :)

Firefly was an excellent series imo. I never watched buffy, but johnlubbe made some excellent points about the series. But as good as firefly was, 24 is much better imo. I thought it was great in season 1 and 2. Season 3 dragged a little bit, but was still solid. Season 4 was over the top, but solid. If you are going to watch 24, you can't take the whole 24 hour thing seriously. Yes they try to match it up, but no way in hell can you look at this show as something that realistically happens in 24 hours. Some of my co workers (mid 50's female) has issues with that, but still likes the show. But every tuesday following an episode she always starts with that was so over the top,not realistic.

Then why does she watch? I hate fuckheads that do that. It's a interesting, original concept. Would she rather watch someone shit and shower from 6-7am? No. No one would.

24 is definitely going on my list at some point. I like kiefer a lot (heck my town was the source for the movie that, arguably, put him on the map with lost boys :) )

BTW, it's funny what you said as far as ranking the seasons of 24 -- my friend said *exactly* the same thing about the various seasons (I assume you are enjoying the current one as he is)...

Firefox is sounding appealing from your guys comments for sure. I do have Netflix so I'll have to put it on... sadly, I will have to be patient...

I was never much of a fan of Buffy or Angel either, but I loved Firefly and Serenity is quite good as well. If you would like, take Firefly for a spin,
You can watch the pilot here: Firefly pilot episode, "Serenity" - Part 1 (http://www.chiabrit.net/FireFly/pilot1.rm), Part 2 (http://www.chiabrit.net/FireFly/pilot2.rm)

Edit: and as far as the series its not really like Trek, its just about a crew of people who for one reason or another would prefer a life on the fringes of the solar system away from the Alliance (think the Trek Federation if it were run by current day politicians).

I agree with everyone else, Firefly is an excellent series and definately worth purchasing. I liked it more than 24 just because Firefly is a series I wouldn't mind watching over and over and it doesn't have to necessarily be in order.

Serenity was one of the few movies I actually went to the theater last year to see, excellent as well. You don't need to see the series before hand, but it does help you understand the characters. And of course I bought it when it came out on dvd. :D

I enjoyed both Firefly & Serenity a lot. Firefly is easily the best sci-fi show I've seen, and Serenity is one of the best sci-fi movies (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the best). Like you I don't like Buffy so I wouldn't judge it by it's creator. I would certainly reccomend it over 24, which I got sick of after 2 seasons.

It's a nice quirky series and I like it. If you're still uncertain, try to rent it or borrow from a friend. I wish the series continued though. Like jonlubbe said, there were plots opening up and I was really curious to see what would happen. I was interested in Booker/s (sp?) (don't have my set atm..friend borrowing it) background.

BTW..how come this is in the Sony gaming section?

I'm actually in the middle of re-watching Firefly right now. I had originally borrowed a friend's set a couple years back, and I picked up my own recently. Fantastic show, I haven't shown it to anyone yet that didn't like it.

I thought the first season of 24 was great, right up until the crappy ending. Then I watched that sampler disk from Best Buy with the first 2 episodes of the second season and decided I could sit & watch that blonde chick be a moron for another season.

And to the person who mentioned Netflix, I love the service but only use it for movies. I wouldn't want to tie all my slots up w/ TV series disks (and my wife wouldn't appreciate that either). When I get to watching a set I get hooked on it and wouldn't want to be waiting on the next disk of it. I have rented some anime series from there, but that's about it.

I have enjoyed all the seaosns of 24, I was out sick for a week and watched 2 of them during that week last winter. I enjoyed the 3rd a lot as well as there was some good scenes late in the season, but I can understand people complaints about that season. So far this new season has been very good.

My coworker watches it as her husband is hooked on it. They only have 1 tv.

Firefly is less "cute" than Buffy or Angel -- the dialogue isn't so mannered ("again with the not caring!" "tonight i'm in for some major studyage!") ... it's much more "mature" (though it's a joss whedon show, so there's comedy). the special effects are stupendous for TV, IMO. see it. every episode is good, even the "filler".
