*2/10 EDIT*- The deadline to enter the contest is Friday, March 3rd, three weeks from today. If you've been considering donating, please do it soon! Thanks.
Hey All.
A very dear friend of mine (I think of her as the little sister I never had) has signed up to do a 26 mile walk this May to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Before she can participate in the walk, she's required to raise $1800 in donations, and she's feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount. I really want to help her with this, so I decided to appeal to the CAG community and put up a contest open to anyone willing to help out.
Here's how it works: to enter the contest, make at least a $5 donation (but please consider giving more! The more you give, the more stuff you'll win if I draw your name. I'll go into more detail about that below) Here's the link to her personal webpage, set up through the Avon Foundation, the sponsors of the walk:
http://walk.avonfoundation.org/site/TR?pg=personal&fr_id=1160&px=2221158
**EDIT**- Apparently the page above will only accept donations of $10 or more. I apologize, I wasn't aware of this. If you would like to donate $5, please pm me and I'll give you info about how you can donate by check. Again, I'm sorry for not being aware of this before.
There's a button on the page marked "Click here to support me" that allows you to donate using a credit card. If you'd like to give, but don't want to use a credit card, pm me and I'll give you info about how to donate by check. When I draw a winner, they'll get to pick their prizes. I'm putting up a choice of games for the PS2, GC, PC, Dreamcast, N64, and Genesis (sorry, I don't have an XBox), and also a few DVD movies. When I draw a winner, I'll pm them to get their shipping address, verify their donation (my friend's webpage keeps a list for her so she can send out thank-you notes, and I'll keep track of people paying by check), then get their choices and ship them out. **IF YOU DONATE, PLEASE PM ME (AND TELL ME HOW MUCH YOU DONATED) SO I'LL KNOW TO ENTER YOU IN THE CONTEST!!*
- If the winner donated $5, they can pick one item from each of 3 different categories of their choice
- If the winner donated $10, they can pick one item from each of 5 different categories of their choice
- If the winner donated $25 or more, they can pick one item from each of the 7 categories, as well as one item from a bonus category (TV on DVD sets)
- If the total donations from CAG reaches $200, I'll also throw in a $25 gift card to the store of the winner's choice
- If the total donations from CAG reaches $400, I'll make it a $50 gift card to the store of the winner's choice
- If the total donations from CAG reaches $500, I'll add the $50 gift card for the winner, plus draw 2nd and 3rd place winners, who will each get to pick games or movies using the rules above (from what's left over), as well as a $15 gift card to the store of their choice.
All games and movies should be considered "lightly used" (scratch-free, in excellent condition and complete with everything but the shrinkwrap. A few N64 boxes may be slightly beat up) unless otherwise noted. Here are the prize options for each category:

Even a $5 donation helps. Every little bit helps. Even if there's not one thing on the lists that you'd want to win, please consider donating. You'll be helping out a great girl, and a great cause.
Deadline: I've decided to set a deadline of March 3rd. I'll draw the winner at random on the morning of Saturday, March 4th. Thank you very much in advance to everyone who donates, and good luck.

I just wanted to mention that it's been brought to my attention that my friend's webpage will only accept donations of $10 or more. I've edited my original post, but I wanted to post again here for anyone who just skimmed my ridiculously long (sorry about that) original post. You can still donate $5, but I guess you'll have to do it by check. (If you pm me, I can give you my address, and I'll get the check to my friend- the check would be made out to "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer")
I'm really sorry about the mixup, and I apologize to anyone who tried to donate $5 at the link I posted.

just out of curiousity - whats the donation level at currently? Her total donations received currently stands at $261, so she still has a long way to go. There have been 2 donations from CAGs so far. I hope that number will increase over the next week, but we'll see. In the meantime all I can do is hope for the best and occasionally bump this thread.
I haven't given her my donation yet, and I know my parents and my brother are also planning to give something, as well as a few of my coworkers. If I can't end up helping her raise enough money, it won't be for a lack of trying.
dont get me wrong, i totally believe in what youre doing and you should be comended for it. But what kind of organization wont take anything less than 1800, its kind of bullshit and probably turns alot of people away from it.
BTW what part of Mass is this in?

BTW what part of Mass is this in?Thanks. I completely agree with you about the $1800 requirement. I think part of it may go toward provisions for the walkers, or the costs associated with getting them there, and I guess they set up a sort of tent village for them since the walk is over two days (May 20-21), but it's still an outrageous amount to expect someone to raise just to participate. There are 8 of these walks scheduled around the country this year, and apparently thousands of people do the walk. Maybe some of them get corporate sponsorship or something. I don't know, but I'm really starting to wonder if she'll be able to raise that much money.
The walk is going to be in Boston. She and I both live about 45 minutes from Boston by car, so if she ends up walking I plan to go down to sort of cheer her on. The other cities that are having Avon walks this year are Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver, San Fransisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Charlotte.

That is alot. I ride the local MS150 every year. It's a 150 mile bike ride over two days. There are tents set up about every 10 miles, plus lunch and breakfast, plus facilities at the state fair grounds if you want to camp overnight (I just get a hotel). Plus they have weekly "training" rides in the area all summer to get you ready. They only ask for a minimum pledge of $200 + about $20 to sign up.
Anyway, I'm glad you did this, maybe I can do somehting on a smaller scale in the fall when I am collecting donations.

bumping this again.
I've got 4 donations so far, so look at it this way- if you donate, your odds of winning are pretty decent. I'd love to see that total doubled when I check back here tonight after I get up (I work nights, sleep days) In case you missed Eviltude's post above, he is giving me Halo 2 to add in to the winner's package of prizes. HALO 2?! Are you kidding me? That's worth trying for all by itself! If you don't want to donate through the link in my original post, you can always pm me for info about other ways to donate.

Free bump from me.That's right. If she doesn't get to $1800, the money she raises still goes to the Avon Foundation for research and treatment of breast cancer. Knowing how much she wants to do this walk, though, there is no way I'm going to let her not make it. If I have to sell off half of everything I own on ebay, and beg strangers on the street for change, that's what I'll do. (I don't think it will come to that, though)

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, guys. Even if you couldn't care less about any of the games or movies I'm giving away, think about all of the women in your life that are important to you, and then think about how important this charity could someday be to them. Mothers, sisters, girlfriends, wives, friends, aunts....whatever. It's scary to think how many women are diagnosed with breast cancer, especially when you stop and think about how many women you care about.
I started this contest because I want to help my friend reach a difficult goal, but the reason I'm being so persistent (some might say annoying) about bumping it over and over again is because I think the fight against breast cancer is so very important. Even if you don't donate to help my friend, I hope you think about supporting breast cancer research in any way you can.

Bumped for a great cause.
Manimal's friend is 25% to her goal. I KNOW CAGers could bring her to 50% by Valentines Day.
Here's a thought; instead of spending $20 on flowers that wilt the next day, or chocolates that make your girlfriend sick(you don't want her to associate that with you!!)donate to breast cancer research. Print out your donation in HER name, put it in a nice card, and write a cheesy note about how you care about her and wanted to protect her in the future. C'mon, she'll think you are the most creative, romantic guy ever!

So CAGers, did you get something great for your sweetie for Valentine's day? Or are you desperate, only have a few hours until you see her and don't have any good ideas? See my post above, or if you're too lazy, here it is again.
Donate through the link on the first post, and you'll get a confirmation page from Avon. Fold it up, put it in a Valentine's day card, and either explain or write in a note that you love her(whoever she is)SOOO much and you want to spend many, many years with her, so you funded breast cancer research to protect her in the future. She will think you are so sweet!
While I can't GUARANTEE you will get some, you'll be helping a great cause, and most importantly to a CAG heart, have the opportunity to win free games!

I'd love to send some more donations her way to help her keep pushing toward that final goal. There hasn't been a new donation in a while, but even if we can only get one or two more donations I'll feel like all these bumps were maybe worth it. You could win a bunch of games. I hope more of you will take a shot at them.

Question Danimal, if we make a donation through the link in the OP do we just PM you to let you know?Yeah, you can do that, or even just post into this thread and say you donated. I check this thread a few times each day, and I'm keeping an eye out for any pms, so either way is fine.
I probably should be putting her link into some of my bumps, too, in case anyone skips the first page. Here it is again, in case anyone missed it in my OP:
http://walk.avonfoundation.org/site...1160&px=2221158
I should mention again that her Avon Foundation page only accepts donations of $10 or more. I wish I had known that when I first set up this contest. It still only takes $5 to enter the contest, but the donation would have to be made by check or money order made out to "Avon Walk for Breast Cancer" and sent to me, rather than directly through her page.

Thanks for the free bump, Wolfpac_Ite. If she doesn't reach the $1800, whatever money she has raised still goes to the Avon Foundation to fight breast cancer. The money donated on her page goes straight to them, and is just credited toward her total amount, so it's not like she has a pile of money that she has to deliver to them at some point.

And, as much as I want to get that game, this seems much more important, don't you think?

Just contributed $20 to the cause by means of a check - the site wasn't loading properly.
I must say, as I mentioned to Danimal, this is truly one of the most sincere threads I've ever seen on CAG. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and I fully support breast cancer research in any way possible, from the smallest collections to the largest fundraisers. I've donated as much time and money as possible to foundations like Avon and Susan G. Komen for the express purpose of saving more lives.
I'm moved that CAG can help in our small way by making contributions to promote the walk for the cure. Please send a donation along to Danimal. $5 would help and certainly won't break your bank. It may even win you a few games. But even if it doesn't, it may help to save someone's life. It helped save my mother's.

I would like to salute Dori-dori, a brand new member to this site! If your actions here in this topic are representative of you as a person, you will be a great CAG! Welcome.
A Standing Ovation goes out to psiufoxx2 as well, with an equally generous donation! Great CAGs such as yourself are true inspirations.
Thanks to all the CAGs who have helped Manimal's friend, it makes me proud to be a part of this community!

Well, it was either this or Shadow Hearts 3.
And, as much as I want to get that game, this seems much more important, don't you think?
Great cause; donated $20 to her Avon site-thingie. (Although I forgot to write in my name, is that ok?)

EDIT: So...wait. If she doesn't reach the $1800 mark, then she won't be able to walk??Thank you very much, Dori-dori. Not a big deal if you didn't put your name on her scroll; I'll pm you to get your info and I can verify the donation with my friend easily enough. To answer your question, you're right- if she doesn't raise the $1800, she doesn't get to do the walk. There's not any question that she'll hit the $1800 goal, though. I have a few other ideas for raising funds for her if it gets close. She's over $1000 already, and I'm certain she'll make it with or without any further help from me, but I intend to help her as much as I possibly can.

I'm glad to hear your mother survived. It's nice to know there can be happy endings where breast cancer is concerned. It's good to know that money donated to research and treatment can make such a big difference in someone's life. Thank you very much for the donation.

=/ Geez, that sucks. But, since you're confident that she'll be able to walk, then there's no problem! Glad to hear she's over the $1000 mark as well!

Bump to ask how close your friend is to her goal, Manimal?
Danimal
02-23-2006, 11:15 AM
Right now she's at just about $1100. Her Avon page is showing $906, and she has another $200 that she's given them in checks, but I guess it takes those a couple weeks to clear before they update her page with them. I'm going to be giving her another $80 this weekend that I've collected from some of my friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers, so she's going to be just a shade over $600 away from reaching her goal.
I'm hoping a bunch of CAGs will come out of the woodwork in the last few days of this contest (8 days left, counting today) and push her even closer.
PM me your address and I'll end my sloth and get the check in the mail :D

Cheapy can you hear me!!
I know Danimal is too humble to ask, but could you post this contest on the front page?
The contest is for a noble cause, and honestly the window for donation has almost closed. One week of front page exposure might just push Danimal's friend over the $1800 mark.
Thanks to all who have donated.

I'll chip in the $15 to put us over the top.Well all right! That puts us at $200 in total CAG donations (pending one check that I'm expecting to arrive in the mail in the next day or two)
So now donating puts you in line for a $25 gift card to the store of your choice (as long as there's one near me) as well as a bunch of games and/or movies. The prize package just got a bit more.....

$75, I wish her the best of luck on the walk.
Having family members that survived the disease and the recent sad news of a friends mother who will not survive through the end of next month due to it, I realize how much this disease impacts life everyday.
People who are on the fence about donating should realize that at any moment someone they care about may be affected with this disease and more often than not the end result is sobering. While a new gadget may seem more important and eyecatching, in the long run even that small donation can make a big difference, and could be the deciding factor in saving your or someone you care about's life.

WOW. A great big thank you to Clue! I know I have been MIA as of late but I am still keeping up. This means alot to me because I had become so involved in it and to see people donating so much for such a good cause is amazing. Much love and good fortune to those who have donated and those who have supported this effort. Thanks to CAG's, the large sum of money needed to enter is just that much easier to attain.

Sorry for the oversight. The donation is much appreciated.
There's still the rest of tonight, tomorrow, and Friday to donate and enter the contest. If you've been thinking about it, now is the time to do it!

Got your check yesterday. Thank you for the donation.
We're currently at $270 donated, and there's one more check I'm waiting on that I expect should come in the mail today, which will put the total at $290. If we could get a flurry of donations today (I'll be drawing a winner sometime TOMORROW) there's an outside chance we could push the total over $400, which would make the gift card in the prize jump from $25 to $50.
Even if there are no more donations before the contest ends, I'm amazed and very grateful that CAGs helped to raise so much money.

My plan is to draw the winner tomorrow around 2:00 pm (EST), so there's just about 19 hours left to enter the contest. I work nights, so 2:00 is about the time I should be getting out of bed tomorrow.
If you've been thinking about it or planning to donate later, there's still time, but it's starting to run out.

Thank you very much to everyone who generously donated, and to everyone who helped with this contest through bumps, kind words and moral support. I appreciate it more than you know.

oh and congratulations Visc. I'm just happy to see some CAG's have a compassionate bone in their body and not all about the greed. Granted I didn't give the world but I hope it helps. It absolutely helps. When it comes to charitable causes like this, it's not about giving the world. Look at it this way- if every person who looked at this thread gave what you gave, she would have reached her goal several times over.
I've been trying to get in contact with her today to see where she's at in pursuit of the $1800 goal. Her Avon webpage total is up about $200 from what it was when I checked it earlier this morning, and currently stands at $1263. I believe she still has checks that haven't cleared yet to add to that total, and I think there was supposed to be a fundraiser going on for her at her daughter's school this past week, but I'm not certain. I'll post again when I find out a definite total.
Well that bit of news certainly put a grin on my face after getting home from work. Thanks for good news, and thanks to everyone else for the congratulatory comments.
