Have yall seen the new look of the Phantom? I saw it in EGM and decided i'd have to post about it.

http://www.phantom.net/

Not sure if this has been said yet or not, but from what i read in EGM, the Phantoms will be given away for free, but you must register for a 2 year Subscription, which costs $30 a month, and during the 2 years u will pay $720.

also they come with a weird keyboard/mouse thing that folds open or something.. looks kinda cool. From the looks of the picture, the phantom has really slimmed down.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to commit that much to a system that has such a shady history. Even if you devide that, it's still $310. Sure, that's how much Xbox and PS2 were when they first came out, but that's a different story. Especially when it's likely the PSP, or maybe even the next line of consoles are coming out the same year, the Phantom will be last on my list.

more details pleas, does that include all the games you want for free? Fuck subscription shit.

hrm.. it says "The basic subscription gives access to a shifting library of older, low-profile PC games (we're talking Deer Hunter-caliber titles). You can then pay extra fees for premium content, such as the top three first-person shooters or strategy games. But the biggest perk-- included in the basic subscription-- is the ability to try demos, reng games(for an estimated $5 for three days, provided publishers allow it), or outright buy them."

sounds like a shitty deal, but did anyone expect anything more of them?

It LOOKS alright, but I'm too cheap to pay for such a steep monthly cost.

Say what you want about the system, but the keyboard/mouse controller is freaking awesome. Probably one of the best peripherals I have ever used.

Plus, Phantom lets you play PC games on a big screen TV sitting comfortably in a couch. I was pretty impressed.

FREE Phantom™ Receiver with Two-Year Subscription Commitment
Sign up for a two-year basic subscription to Phantom Gaming Service and the hardware and controllers are free of charge. As a subscriber you will receive an initial library of free games, supplemented each month with new choices as a part of your basic subscription fee. Additional titles are available for immediate demo, rent or purchase. Premium content packages will also be made available.
Subscription-based service includes:

-Free library of titles as part of basic subscription
-New, premium titles available on-demand: try, rent or buy
-Wide selection of games for everyone in the household: both single and multiplayer games

OH! so they're saying along with the 720 bucks ($30 x 24 months) you have to pay initially plus the DSL/cable/broadband fees which could be as much as 30 dollars a month as well during that time period (kicking the useage fees up to about $1440 for 2 years), that the games you're getting are things you DON'T EVEN OWN! You still have to BUY games to use after the 2 year period is up if you choose not to subscribe to use it anymore.

WHAT A SCAM!

And man, I didnt even get to talkng about the weak system specs... 256mb ram? WTF?

Apextreme will let yuo do this without the subscription lockout. I would 100% pick up an Apextreme over a Phantom, just becasue I'd be able to play whatever I wanted on my television screen, and not deal with subscription fees and downloadable games.
